We develop an improved bound for the chromatic number of graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ under the assumption that the number of edges spanning any neighbourhood is at most $(1-σ)\binomΔ{2}$ for some fixed $0<σ<1$. The leading term in the reduction of colours achieved through this bound is best possible as $σ\to0$. As two consequences, we advance the state of the art in two longstanding and well-studied graph colouring conjectures, the Erdős-Nešetřil conjecture and Reed's conjecture. We prove that the strong chromatic index is at most $1.772Δ^2$ for any graph $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$. We prove that the chromatic number is at most $\lceil 0.881(Δ+1)+0.119ω\rceil$ for any graph $G$ with clique number $ω$ and sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$. Additionally, we show how our methods can be adapted under the additional assumption that the codegree is at most $(1-σ)Δ$, and establish what may be considered first progress towards a conjecture of Vu.

Given a bipartite graph with parts $A$ and $B$ having maximum degrees at most $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$, respectively, consider a list assignment such that every vertex in $A$ or $B$ is given a list of colours of size $k_A$ or $k_B$, respectively.
We prove some general sufficient conditions in terms of $Δ_A$, $Δ_B$, $k_A$, $k_B$ to be guaranteed a proper colouring such that each vertex is coloured using only a colour from its list. These are asymptotically nearly sharp in the very asymmetric cases. We establish one sufficient condition in particular, where $Δ_A=Δ_B=Δ$, $k_A=\log Δ$ and $k_B=(1+o(1))Δ/\logΔ$ as $Δ\to\infty$. This amounts to partial progress towards a conjecture from 1998 of Krivelevich and the first author.
We also derive some necessary conditions through an intriguing connection between the complete case and the extremal size of approximate Steiner systems. We show that for complete bipartite graphs these conditions are asymptotically nearly sharp in a large part of the parameter space. This has provoked the following.
In the setup above, we conjecture that a proper list colouring is always guaranteed
* if $k_A \ge Δ_A^\varepsilon$ and $k_B \ge Δ_B^\varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon>0$ provided $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$ are large enough;
* if $k_A \ge C \logΔ_B$ and $k_B \ge C \logΔ_A$ for some absolute constant $C>1$; or
* if $Δ_A=Δ_B = Δ$ and $ k_B \ge C (Δ/\logΔ)^{1/k_A}\log Δ$ for some absolute constant $C>0$.
These are asymmetric generalisations of the above-mentioned conjecture of Krivelevich and the first author, and if true are close to best possible. Our general sufficient conditions provide partial progress towards these conjectures.
An algorithmic framework for colouring locally sparse graphs
We develop an algorithmic framework for graph colouring that reduces the problem to verifying a local probabilistic property of the independent sets.
With this we give, for any fixed $k\ge 3$ and $\varepsilon>0$, a randomised polynomial-time algorithm for colouring graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ in which each vertex is contained in at most $t$ copies of a cycle of length $k$, where $1/2\le t\le Δ^\frac{2\varepsilon}{1+2\varepsilon}/(\logΔ)^2$, with $\lfloor(1+\varepsilon)Δ/\log(Δ/\sqrt t)\rfloor$ colours.
This generalises and improves upon several notable results including those of Kim (1995) and Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov (1999), and more recent ones of Molloy (2019) and Achlioptas, Iliopoulos and Sinclair (2019). This bound on the chromatic number is tight up to an asymptotic factor $2$ and it coincides with a famous algorithmic barrier to colouring random graphs.
Graph structure via local occupancy
The first author together with Jenssen, Perkins and Roberts (2017) recently showed how local properties of the hard-core model on triangle-free graphs guarantee the existence of large independent sets, of size matching the best-known asymptotics due to Shearer (1983). The present work strengthens this in two ways: first, by guaranteeing stronger graph structure in terms of colourings through applications of the Lovász local lemma; and second, by extending beyond triangle-free graphs in terms of local sparsity, treating for example graphs of bounded local edge density, of bounded local Hall ratio, and of bounded clique number. This generalises and improves upon much other earlier work, including that of Shearer (1995), Alon (1996) and Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov (1999), and more recent results of Molloy (2019), Bernshteyn (2019) and Achlioptas, Iliopoulos and Sinclair (2019). Our results derive from a common framework built around the hard-core model. It pivots on a property we call local occupancy, giving a clean separation between the methods for deriving graph structure with probabilistic information and verifying the requisite probabilistic information itself.
Colourings, transversals and local sparsity

Motivated both by recently introduced forms of list colouring and by earlier work on independent transversals subject to a local sparsity condition, we use the semi-random method to prove the following result.
For any function $μ$ satisfying $μ(d)=o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$, there is a function $λ$ satisfying $λ(d)=d+o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$ such that the following holds. For any graph $H$ and any partition of its vertices into parts of size at least $λ$ such that (a) for each part the average over its vertices of degree to other parts is at most $d$, and (b) the maximum degree from a vertex to some other part is at most $μ$, there is guaranteed to be a transversal of the parts that forms an independent set of $H$.
This is a common strengthening of two results of Loh and Sudakov (2007) and Molloy and Thron (2012), each of which in turn implies an earlier result of Reed and Sudakov (2002).
Structure and colour in triangle-free graphs

Motivated by a recent conjecture of the first author, we prove that every properly coloured triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains a rainbow independent set of size $\lceil\frac12χ\rceil$. This is sharp up to a factor $2$. This result and its short proof have implications for the related notion of chromatic discrepancy.
Drawing inspiration from both structural and extremal graph theory, we conjecture that every triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains an induced cycle of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$ as $χ\to\infty$. Even if one only demands an induced path of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$, the conclusion would be sharp up to a constant multiple. We prove it for regular girth $5$ graphs and for girth $21$ graphs.
As a common strengthening of the induced paths form of this conjecture and of Johansson's theorem (1996), we posit the existence of some $c >0$ such that for every forest $H$ on $D$ vertices, every triangle-free and induced $H$-free graph has chromatic number at most $c D/\log D$. We prove this assertion with `triangle-free' replaced by `regular girth $5$'.
Regular Turán numbers and some Gan-Loh-Sudakov-type problems

Motivated by a Gan-Loh-Sudakov-type problem, we introduce the regular Turán numbers, a natural variation on the classical Turán numbers for which the host graph is required to be regular. Among other results, we prove a striking supersaturation version of Mantel's theorem in the case of a regular host graph of odd order. We also characterise the graphs for which the regular Turán numbers behave classically or otherwise.
Strong chromatic index and Hadwiger number
We investigate the effect of a fixed forbidden clique minor upon the strong chromatic index, both in multigraphs and in simple graphs.
We conjecture for each $k\ge 4$ that any $K_k$-minor-free multigraph of maximum degree $Δ$ has strong chromatic index at most $\frac32(k-2)Δ$. We present a construction certifying that if true the conjecture is asymptotically sharp as $Δ\to\infty$. In support of the conjecture, we show it in the case $k=4$ and prove the statement for strong clique number in place of strong chromatic index.
By contrast, we make a basic observation that for $K_k$-minor-free simple graphs, the problem of strong edge-colouring is "between" Hadwiger's Conjecture and its fractional relaxation.
For $k\geq5$, we also show that $K_k$-minor-free multigraphs of edge-diameter at most $2$ have strong clique number at most $(k-\frac{1}{2})Δ$.
Strong cliques and forbidden cycles
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number $ω_2'(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest collection of edges every pair of which are incident or connected by an edge in $G$. We study the strong clique number of graphs missing some set of cycle lengths. For a graph $G$ of large enough maximum degree $Δ$, we show among other results the following: $ω_2'(G)\le5Δ^2/4$ if $G$ is triangle-free; $ω_2'(G)\le3(Δ-1)$ if $G$ is $C_4$-free; $ω_2'(G)\leΔ^2$ if $G$ is $C_{2k+1}$-free for some $k\ge 2$. These bounds are attained by natural extremal examples. Our work extends and improves upon previous work of Faudree, Gyárfás, Schelp and Tuza (1990), Mahdian (2000) and Faron and Postle (2019). We are motivated by the corresponding problems for the strong chromatic index.
Occupancy fraction, fractional colouring, and triangle fraction
Given $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $f_0$ such that, if $f_0 \le f \le Δ^2+1$, then for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$ in which the neighbourhood of every vertex in $G$ spans at most $Δ^2/f$ edges, (i) an independent set of $G$ drawn uniformly at random has at least $(1/2-\varepsilon)(n/Δ)\log f$ vertices in expectation, and (ii) the fractional chromatic number of $G$ is at most $(2+\varepsilon)Δ/\log f$. These bounds cannot in general be improved by more than a factor $2$ asymptotically. One may view these as stronger versions of results of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi (1981) and Shearer (1983). The proofs use a tight analysis of the hard-core model.
Colouring triangle-free graphs with local list sizes

We prove two distinct and natural refinements of a recent breakthrough result of Molloy (and a follow-up work of Bernshteyn) on the (list) chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. In both our results, we permit the amount of colour made available to vertices of lower degree to be accordingly lower. One result concerns list colouring and correspondence colouring, while the other concerns fractional colouring. Our proof of the second illustrates the use of the hard-core model to prove a Johansson-type result, which may be of independent interest.
VC dimension and a union theorem for set systems

Fix positive integers $k$ and $d$. We show that, as $n\to\infty$, any set system $\mathcal{A} \subset 2^{[n]}$ for which the VC dimension of $\{ \triangle_{i=1}^k S_i \mid S_i \in \mathcal{A}\}$ is at most $d$ has size at most $(2^{d\bmod{k}}+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor d/k\rfloor}$. Here $\triangle$ denotes the symmetric difference operator. This is a $k$-fold generalisation of a result of Dvir and Moran, and it settles one of their questions. A key insight is that, by a compression method, the problem is equivalent to an extremal set theoretic problem on $k$-wise intersection or union that was originally due to Erdős and Frankl. We also give an example of a family $\mathcal{A} \subset 2^{[n]}$ such that the VC dimension of $\mathcal{A}\cap \mathcal{A}$ and of $\mathcal{A}\cup \mathcal{A}$ are both at most $d$, while $\lvert \mathcal{A} \rvert = Ω(n^d)$. This provides a negative answer to another question of Dvir and Moran.

We prove that any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d$ contains a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree at least $d^2/(2n)$. This is sharp up to a logarithmic factor in $n$. Relatedly, we show that the fractional chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most the minimum of $n/d$ and $(2+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. This is sharp up to constant factors. Similarly, we show that the list chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most $O(\min\{\sqrt{n},(n\log n)/d\})$ as $n\to\infty$.
Relatedly, we also make two conjectures. First, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has fractional chromatic number at most $(\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. Second, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has list chromatic number at most $O(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ as $n\to\infty$.
Tree-like distance colouring for planar graphs of sufficient girth

Given a multigraph $G$ and a positive integer $t$, the distance-$t$ chromatic index of $G$ is the least number of colours needed for a colouring of the edges so that every pair of distinct edges connected by a path of fewer than $t$ edges must receive different colours. Let $π'_t(d)$ and $τ'_t(d)$ be the largest values of this parameter over the class of planar multigraphs and of (simple) trees, respectively, of maximum degree $d$. We have that $π'_t(d)$ is at most and at least a non-trivial constant multiple larger than $τ'_t(d)$. (We conjecture $\limsup_{d\to\infty}π'_2(d)/τ'_2(d) =9/4$ in particular.) We prove for odd $t$ the existence of a quantity $g$ depending only on $t$ such that the distance-$t$ chromatic index of any planar multigraph of maximum degree $d$ and girth at least $g$ is at most $τ'_t(d)$ if $d$ is sufficiently large. Such a quantity does not exist for even $t$. We also show a related, similar phenomenon for distance vertex-colouring.
Single-conflict colouring
Given a multigraph, suppose that each vertex is given a local assignment of $k$ colours to its incident edges. We are interested in whether there is a choice of one local colour per vertex such that no edge has both of its local colours chosen. The least $k$ for which this is always possible given any set of local assignments we call the {\em single-conflict chromatic number} of the graph. This parameter is closely related to separation choosability and adaptable choosability. We show that single-conflict chromatic number of simple graphs embeddable on a surface of Euler genus $g$ is $O(g^{1/4}\log g)$ as $g\to\infty$. This is sharp up to the logarithmic factor.

We study a restricted form of list colouring, for which every pair of lists that correspond to adjacent vertices may not share more than one colour. The optimal list size such that a proper list colouring is always possible given this restriction, we call separation choosability. We show for bipartite graphs that separation choosability increases with (the logarithm of) the minimum degree. This strengthens results of Molloy and Thron and, partially, of Alon. One attempt to drop the bipartiteness assumption precipitates a natural class of Ramsey-type questions, of independent interest. For example, does every triangle-free graph of minimum degree $d$ contain a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree $Ω(\log d)$ as $d\to\infty$?
The Bollobás-Eldridge-Catlin conjecture for even girth at least $10$
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to \textit{pack} if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ(G_1)+1) (Δ(G_2)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumptions that neither $G_1$ nor $G_2$ contain a $4$-, $6$- or $8$-cycle, and that $Δ(G_1)$ or $Δ(G_2)$ is large enough ($\ge 940060$).
Distance colouring without one cycle length

We consider distance colourings in graphs of maximum degree at most $d$ and how excluding one fixed cycle length $\ell$ affects the number of colours required as $d\to\infty$. For vertex-colouring and $t\ge 1$, if any two distinct vertices connected by a path of at most $t$ edges are required to be coloured differently, then a reduction by a logarithmic (in $d$) factor against the trivial bound $O(d^t)$ can be obtained by excluding an odd cycle length $\ell \ge 3t$ if $t$ is odd or by excluding an even cycle length $\ell \ge 2t+2$. For edge-colouring and $t\ge 2$, if any two distinct edges connected by a path of fewer than $t$ edges are required to be coloured differently, then excluding an even cycle length $\ell \ge 2t$ is sufficient for a logarithmic factor reduction. For $t\ge 2$, neither of the above statements are possible for other parity combinations of $\ell$ and $t$. These results can be considered extensions of results due to Johansson (1996) and Mahdian (2000), and are related to open problems of Alon and Mohar (2002) and Kaiser and Kang (2014).
A precolouring extension of Vizing's theorem
Fix a palette $\mathcal K$ of $Δ+1$ colours, a graph with maximum degree $Δ$, and a subset $M$ of the edge set with minimum distance between edges at least $9$. If the edges of $M$ are arbitrarily precoloured from $\mathcal K$, then there is guaranteed to be a proper edge-colouring using only colours from $\mathcal K$ that extends the precolouring on $M$ to the entire graph. This result is a first general precolouring extension form of Vizing's theorem, and it proves a conjecture of Albertson and Moore under a slightly stronger distance requirement. We also show that the condition on the distance can be lowered to $5$ when the graph contains no cycle of length $5$.

Is there some absolute $\varepsilon > 0$ such that for any claw-free graph $G$, the chromatic number of the square of $G$ satisfies $χ(G^2) \le (2-\varepsilon) ω(G)^2$, where $ω(G)$ is the clique number of $G$? Erdős and Nešetřil asked this question for the specific case of $G$ the line graph of a simple graph and this was answered in the affirmative by Molloy and Reed. We show that the answer to the more general question is also yes, and moreover that it essentially reduces to the original question of Erdős and Nešetřil.
