The Mihail-Vazirani conjecture and strong edge-expansion in random $0/1$ polytopes
We study the edge-expansion of the graph of a random $0/1$ polytope $P^d_p$, defined as the convex hull of a random subset of the points in $\{0,1\}^d$ where every point is retained independently and with probability $p$. This problem was introduced more than twenty years ago in a work of Gillmann and Kaibel, and has been extensively studied ever since.
We prove that, for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$ and every $p\in(0,1-\varepsilon]$, with high probability the graph of $P^d_p$ has edge-expansion $Θ(d)$. This improves the previously best known bound due to Ferber, Krivelevich, Sales and Samotij, and verifies, in a strong form, the celebrated Mihail-Vazirani conjecture for random $0/1$ polytopes. Although the expansion factor $Θ(d)$ is typically best possible for $p\ge 1/2+\varepsilon$, we also show that the behaviour changes drastically at $p=1/2$. Namely, for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$ and every integer $k\ge 2$, if $p\le 1/2-\varepsilon$, then with high probability the graph of $P^d_p$ has edge-expansion $Ω(d^k)$. Thus, random $0/1$ polytopes exhibit an interesting phase transition at $p=1/2$.
Supercritical Site Percolation on Regular Graphs
We consider site (vertex) percolation on $d$-regular graphs, for both constant-degree and growing-degree cases. We give sufficient, and relatively tight, conditions for the emergence of the ``Erdős-Rényi component phenomenon" in the supercritical regime $p=\frac{1+ε}{d-1}$: namely, the appearance of a unique giant component of order $n/d$ in the percolated subgraph, with all other components being of size $O(\log n)$. Our main results apply both to the $d$-dimensional hypercube and to pseudo-random graphs, and resolve two open questions in these cases. We further discuss differences (and similarities) between bond (edge) percolation setting and site percolation setting.
Diameter and mixing time of the giant component in the percolated hypercube
We consider bond percolation on the $d$-dimensional binary hypercube with $p=c/d$ for fixed $c>1$. We prove that the typical diameter of the giant component $L_1$ is of order $Θ(d)$, and the typical mixing time of the lazy random walk on $L_1$ is of order $Θ(d^2)$. This resolves long-standing open problems of Bollobás, Kohayakawa and Łuczak from 1994, and of Benjamini and Mossel from 2003.
A key component in our approach is a new tight large deviation estimate on the number of vertices in $L_1$ whose proof includes several novel ingredients: a structural description of the residue outside the giant component after sprinkling, a tight quantitative estimate on the spread of the giant in the hypercube, and a stability principle which rules out the disintegration of large connected sets under thinning. This toolkit further allows us to obtain optimal bounds on the expansion in $L_1$.
Cycle lengths in the percolated hypercube
Let $Q^d_p$ be the random subgraph of the $d$-dimensional binary hypercube obtained after edge-percolation with probability $p$. It was shown recently by the authors that, for every $\varepsilon > 0$, there is some $c = c(\varepsilon)>0$ such that, if $pd\ge c$, then typically $Q^d_p$ contains a cycle of length at least $(1-\varepsilon)2^d$. We strengthen this result to show that, under the same assumptions, typically $Q^d_p$ contains cycles of all even lengths between $4$ and $(1-\varepsilon)2^d$.
A large hole in pseudo-random graphs
We show that there exist constants $δ_1,δ_2>0$ such that if $G$ is an $(n,d,λ)$-graph with $λ/d\leδ_1$, then $G$ contains an induced cycle of length at least $δ_2n/d$. We further demonstrate that, up to a constant factor, this is best possible. Utilising our techniques, we derive that the number of non-isomorphic induced subgraphs of such $G$ is at least exponential in $n\log d/d$, and further demonstrate that this is tight up to a constant factor in the exponent.
Spanning trees of bounded degree in random geometric graphs
We determine the sharp threshold for the containment of all $n$-vertex trees of bounded degree in random geometric graphs with $n$ vertices. This provides a geometric counterpart of Montgomery's threshold result for binomial random graphs, and confirms a conjecture of Espuny Díaz, Lichev, Mitsche, and Wesolek. Our proof is algorithmic and adapts to other families of graphs, in particular graphs with bounded genus or tree-width.
Nearly spanning cycle in the percolated hypercube
Let $Q^d$ be the $d$-dimensional binary hypercube. We form a random subgraph $Q^d_p\subseteq Q^d$ by retaining each edge of $Q^d$ independently with probability $p$. We show that, for every constant $\varepsilon>0$, there exists a constant $C=C(\varepsilon)>0$ such that, if $p\ge C/d$, then with high probability $Q^d_p$ contains a cycle of length at least $(1-\varepsilon)2^d$. This confirms a long-standing folklore conjecture, stated in particular by Condon, Espuny Díaz, Girão, Kühn, and Osthus [Hamiltonicity of random subgraphs of the hypercube, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 305 (2024), No. 1534].
Universality of the matching number in percolated regular graphs
Fix a sequence of $d$-regular graphs $(G_d)_{d\in \mathbb{N}}$ and denote by $G_{d,p}$ the graph obtained from $G_d$ after edge-percolation with probability $p=c/d$, for a constant $c>0$. We prove a quantitative local convergence of $(G_{d,p})_{d\in \mathbb{N}}$. In combination with results of Bordenave, Lelarge and Salez, it implies that the rescaled matching number of $G_{d,p}$ is asymptotically equivalent to that of the binomial random graph $G(n,c/n)$.
Tree tilings in random regular graphs
We show that for every $ε>0$ there exists a sufficiently large $d_0\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every $d\ge d_0$, whp the random $d$-regular graph $G(n,d)$ contains a $T$-factor for every tree $T$ on at most $(1-ε)d/\ln d$ vertices. This is best possible since, for large enough integer $d$, whp $G(n,d)$ does not contain a $\frac{(1+ε)d}{\ln d}$-star-factor. Our method gives a randomised algorithm which whp finds said $T$-factor and whose expected running time is $O(n^{1+o(1)})$, as well as an efficient deterministic counterpart.
Minimum degree $k$ and $k$-connectedness usually arrive together
Let $d,n\in \mathbb{N}$ be such that $d=ω(1)$, and $d\le n^{1-a}$ for some constant $a>0$. Consider a $d$-regular graph $G=(V, E)$ and the random graph process that starts with the empty graph $G(0)$ and at each step $G(i)$ is obtained from $G(i-1)$ by adding uniformly at random a new edge from $E$. We show that if $G$ satisfies some (very) mild global edge-expansion, and an almost optimal edge-expansion of sets up to order $O(d\log n)$, then for any constant $k\in \mathbb{N}$ in the random graph process on $G$, typically the hitting times of minimum degree at least $k$ and of $k$-connectedness are equal. This, in particular, covers both $d$-regular high dimensional product graphs and pseudo-random graphs, and confirms a conjecture of Joos from 2015. We further demonstrate that this result is tight in the sense that there are $d$-regular $n$-vertex graphs with optimal edge-expansion of sets up to order $Ω(d)$, for which the probability threshold of minimum degree at least one is different than the probability threshold of connectivity.
Components, large and small, are as they should be I: supercritical percolation on regular graphs of growing degree
We provide sufficient conditions for a regular graph $G$ of growing degree $d$, guaranteeing a phase transition in its random subgraph $G_p$ similar to that of $G(n,p)$ when $p\cdot d\approx 1$. These conditions capture several well-studied graphs, such as (percolation on) the complete graph $K_n$, the binary hypercube $Q^d$, $d$-regular expanders, and random $d$-regular graphs. In particular, this serves as a unified proof for these (and other) cases.
Suppose that $G$ is a $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, with $d=ω(1)$. Let $ε>0$ be a small constant, and let $p=\frac{1+ε}{d}$. Let $y(ε)$ be the survival probability of a Galton-Watson tree with offspring distribution Po$(1+ε)$. We show that if $G$ satisfies a (very) mild edge expansion requirement, and if one has fairly good control on the expansion of small sets in $G$, then typically the percolated random subgraph $G_p$ contains a unique giant component of asymptotic order $y(ε)n$, and all the other components in $G_p$ are of order $O(\log n/ε^2)$.
We also show that this result is tight, in the sense that if one asks for a slightly weaker control on the expansion of small sets in $G$, then there are $d$-regular graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices, where typically the second largest component is of order $Ω(d\log (n/d))=ω(\log n)$.
This is the first of a two-part sequence of papers. In the subsequent work, we consider supercritical percolation on regular graphs of constant degree, and establish similar sufficient (and essentially tight) conditions in that setting.
Components, large and small, are as they should be II: supercritical percolation on regular graphs of constant degree
Let $d\ge 3$ be a fixed integer. Let $y:= y(p)$ be the probability that the root of an infinite $d$-regular tree belongs to an infinite cluster after $p$-bond-percolation. We show that for every constants $b,α>0$ and $1<λ< d-1$, there exist constants $c,C>0$ such that the following holds. Let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, satisfying that for every $U\subseteq V(G)$ with $|U|\le \frac{n}{2}$, $e(U,U^c)\ge b|U|$ and for every $U\subseteq V(G)$ with $|U|\le \log^Cn$, $e(U)\le (1+c)|U|$. Let $p=\fracλ{d-1}$. Then, with probability tending to one as $n$ tends to infinity, the largest component $L_1$ in the random subgraph $G_p$ of $G$ satisfies $\left|1-\frac{|L_1|}{yn}\right|\le α$, and all the other components in $G_p$ are of order $O\left(\frac{λ\log n}{(λ-1)^2}\right)$. This generalises (and improves upon) results for random $d$-regular graphs.
Large matchings and nearly spanning, nearly regular subgraphs of random subgraphs
Given a graph $G$ and $p\in [0,1]$, the random subgraph $G_p$ is obtained by retaining each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. We show that for every $ε>0$, there exists a constant $C>0$ such that the following holds. Let $d\ge C$ be an integer, let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph and let $p\ge \frac{C}{d}$. Then, with probability tending to one as $|V(G)|$ tends to infinity, there exists a matching in $G_p$ covering at least $(1-ε)|V(G)|$ vertices.
We further show that for a wide family of $d$-regular graphs $G$, which includes the $d$-dimensional hypercube, for any $p\ge \frac{\log^5d}{d}$ with probability tending to one as $d$ tends to infinity, $G_p$ contains an induced subgraph on at least $(1-o(1))|V(G)|$ vertices, whose degrees are tightly concentrated around the expected average degree $dp$.
Long cycles in percolated expanders
Given a graph $G$ and probability $p$, we form the random subgraph $G_p$ by retaining each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. Given $d\in\mathbb{N}$ and constants $0<c<1, \varepsilon>0$, we show that if every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size exactly $\frac{c|V(G)|}{d}$ satisfies $|N(S)|\ge d|S|$ and $p=\frac{1+\varepsilon}{d}$, then the probability that $G_p$ does not contain a cycle of length $Ω(\varepsilon^2c^2|V(G)|)$ is exponentially small in $|V(G)|$. As an intermediate step, we also show that given $k,d\in \mathbb{N}$ and a constant $\varepsilon>0$, if every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size exactly $k$ satisfies $|N(S)|\ge kd$ and $p=\frac{1+\varepsilon}{d}$, then the probability that $G_p$ does not contain a path of length $Ω(\varepsilon^2 kd)$ is exponentially small. We further discuss applications of these results to $K_{s,t}$-free graphs of maximal density.
Isoperimetry in product graphs
In this short note, we establish an edge-isoperimetric inequality for arbitrary product graphs. Our inequality is sharp for subsets of many different sizes in every product graph. In particular, it implies that the $2^d$-element sets with smallest edge-boundary in the hypercube are subcubes and is only marginally weaker than the Bollobás$\unicode{x2013}$Leader edge-isoperimetric inequalities for grids and tori. Additionally, it improves two edge-isoperimetric inequalities for products of regular graphs proved by Erde, Kang, Krivelevich, and the first author and answers two questions about edge-isoperimetry in powers of regular graphs raised in their work.

Let $K^r_n$ be the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, that is, the hypergraph whose vertex set is $[n]:=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and whose edge set is $\binom{[n]}{r}$. We form $G^r(n,p)$ by retaining each edge of $K^r_n$ independently with probability $p$.
An $r$-uniform hypergraph $H\subseteq G$ is $F$-saturated if $H$ does not contain any copy of $F$, but any missing edge of $H$ in $G$ creates a copy of $F$. Furthermore, we say that $H$ is weakly $F$-saturated in $G$ if $H$ does not contain any copy of $F$, but the missing edges of $H$ in $G$ can be added back one-by-one, in some order, such that every edge creates a new copy of $F$. The smallest number of edges in an $F$-saturated hypergraph in $G$ is denoted by $sat(G,F)$, and in a weakly $F$-saturated hypergraph in $G$ by $wsat(G,F)$.
In 2017, Korándi and Sudakov initiated the study of saturation in random graphs, showing that for constant $p$, with high probability $sat(G(n,p),K_s)=(1+o(1))n\log_{\frac{1}{1-p}}n$, and $wsat(G(n,p),K_s)=wsat(K_n,K_s)$. Generalising their results, in this paper, we solve the suturation problem for random hypergraphs for every $2\le r < s$ and constant $p$.
Perfect Matching in Product Graphs and in their Random Subgraphs
For $t \in \mathbb{N}$ and every $i\in[t]$, let $H_i$ be a $d_i$-regular connected graph, with $1<|V(H_i)|\le C$ for some integer $C\ge 2$. Let $G=\square_{i=1}^tH_i$ be the Cartesian product of $H_1, \ldots, H_t$. We show that if $t\ge 5C$ then $G$ contains a (nearly-)perfect matching.
Then, considering the random graph process on $G$, we generalise the result of Bollobás on the binary hypercube $Q^t$, showing that with high probability, the hitting times for minimum degree one, connectivity, and the existence of a (nearly-)perfect matching in the random graph process on $G$ are the same. As a byproduct, we develop several tools which may be of independent interest in a more general setting when one seeks to establish the typical existence of a perfect matching under percolation.
Hitting time of connectedness in the random hypercube process
We present a short and self-contained proof of a classical result due to Bollobás (1990): in the random hypercube process, with high probability the hitting time of connectedness equals the hitting time of having minimum degree at least one.
Climbing up a random subgraph of the hypercube
Let $Q^d$ be the $d$-dimensional binary hypercube. We say that $P=\{v_1,\ldots, v_k\}$ is an increasing path of length $k-1$ in $Q^d$, if for every $i\in [k-1]$ the edge $v_iv_{i+1}$ is obtained by switching some zero coordinate in $v_i$ to a one coordinate in $v_{i+1}$.
Form a random subgraph $Q^d_p$ by retaining each edge in $E(Q^d)$ independently with probability $p$. We show that there is a phase transition with respect to the length of a longest increasing path around $p=\frac{e}{d}$. Let $α$ be a constant and let $p=\fracα{d}$. When $α<e$, then there exists a $δ\in [0,1)$ such that whp a longest increasing path in $Q^d_p$ is of length at most $δd$. On the other hand, when $α>e$, whp there is a path of length $d-2$ in $Q^d_p$, and in fact, whether it is of length $d-2, d-1$, or $d$ depends on whether the all-zero and all-one vertices percolate or not.
Percolation through Isoperimetry
We provide a sufficient condition on the isoperimetric properties of a regular graph $G$ of growing degree $d$, under which the random subgraph $G_p$ typically undergoes a phase transition around $p=\frac{1}{d}$ which resembles the emergence of a giant component in the binomial random graph model $G(n,p)$. We further show that this condition is tight.
More precisely, let $d=ω(1)$, let $ε>0$ be a small enough constant, and let $p \cdot d=1+ε$. We show that if $C$ is sufficiently large and $G$ is a $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph where every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of order at most $\frac{n}{2}$ has edge-boundary of size at least $C|S|$, then $G_p$ typically has a unique linear sized component, whose order is asymptotically $y(ε)n$, where $y(ε)$ is the survival probability of a Galton-Watson tree with offspring distribution Po$(1+ε)$. We further give examples to show that this result is tight both in terms of its dependence on $C$, and with respect to the order of the second-largest component.
We also consider a more general setting, where we only control the expansion of sets up to size $k$. In this case, we show that if $G$ is such that every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of order at most $k$ has edge-boundary of size at least $d|S|$ and $p$ is such that $p\cdot d \geq 1 + ε$, then $G_p$ typically contains a component of order $Ω(k)$.
