On the Relation Between Wiener Index and Eccentricity of a Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The relation between the Wiener index $W(G)$ and the eccentricity $\varepsilon(G)$ of a graph $G$ is studied. Lower and upper bounds on $W(G)$ in terms of $\varepsilon(G)$ are proved and extremal graphs characterized. A Nordhaus-Gaddum type result on $W(G)$ involving $\varepsilon(G)$ is given. A sharp upper bound on the Wiener index of a tree in terms of its eccentricity is proved. It is shown that in the class of trees of the same order, the difference $W(T) - \varepsilon(T)$ is minimized on caterpillars. An exact formula for $W(T) - \varepsilon(T)$ in terms of the radius of a tree $T$ is obtained. A lower bound on the eccentricity of a tree in terms of its radius is also given. Two conjectures are proposed. The first asserts that the difference $W(G) - \varepsilon(G)$ does not increase after contracting an edge of $G$. The second conjecture asserts that the difference between the Wiener index of a graph and its eccentricity is largest on paths.
Some binary products and integer linear programming for computing $k$-metric dimension of graphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph. For an ordered set $S=\{v_1,\ldots, v_\ell\}\subseteq V(G)$, the vector $r_G(v|S) = (d_G(v_1,v), \ldots, d_G(v_\ell,v))$ is called the metric $S$-representation of $v$. If for any pair of different vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, the vectors $r(v|S)$ and $r(u|S)$ differ in at least $k$ positions, then $S$ is a $k$-metric generator for $G$. A smallest $k$-metric generator for $G$ is a $k$-{\em metric basis} for $G$, its cardinality being the $k$-metric dimension of $G$. A sharp upper bound and a closed formulae for the $k$-metric dimension of the hierarchical product of graphs is proved. Also, sharp lower bounds for the $k$-metric dimension of the splice and link products of graphs are presented. An integer linear programming model for computing the $k$-metric dimension and a $k$-metric basis of a given graph is proposed. These results are applied to bound or to compute the $k$-metric dimension of some classes of graphs that are of interest in mathematical chemistry.

The geodesic-transversal problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
A maximal geodesic in a graph is a geodesic (alias shortest path) which is not a subpath of a longer geodesic. The geodesic-transversal problem in a graph $G$ is introduced as the task to find a smallest set $S$ of vertices of $G$ such that each maximal geodesic has at least one vertex in $S$. The minimum cardinality of such a set is the geodesic-transversal number ${\rm gt}(G)$ of $G$. It is proved that ${\rm gt}(G) = 1$ if and only if $G$ is a subdivided star and that the geodesic-transversal problem is NP-complete. Fast algorithms to determine the geodesic-transversal number of trees and of spread cactus graphs are designed, respectively.

Correcting the algorithm for the secure domination number of cographs by Jha, Pradhan, and Banerjee
Jha, Pradhan, and Banerjee devised a linear algorithm to compute the secure domination number of a cograph. Here it is shown that their Lemma~2, which is crucial for the computational complexity of the algorithm, is incomplete. An accordingly modified lemma is proved and it is demonstrated that the complexity of the modified algorithm remains linear.

$1/2$-conjectures on the domination game and claw-free graphs
Let $γ_g(G)$ be the game domination number of a graph $G$. Rall conjectured that if $G$ is a traceable graph, then $γ_g(G) \le \left\lceil \frac{1}{2}n(G)\right\rceil$. Our main result verifies the conjecture over the class of line graphs. Moreover, in this paper we put forward the conjecture that if $δ(G) \geq 2$, then $γ_g(G) \leq \left\lceil \frac{1}{2}n(G) \right\rceil$. We show that both conjectures hold true for claw-free cubic graphs. We further prove the upper bound $γ_g(G) \le \left\lceil \frac{11}{20} \, n(G) \right\rceil$ over the class of claw-free graphs of minimum degree at least $2$. Computer experiments supporting the new conjecture and sharpness examples are also presented.
Total connected domination game
The (total) connected domination game on a graph $G$ is played by two players, Dominator and Staller, according to the standard (total) domination game with the additional requirement that at each stage of the game the selected vertices induce a connected subgraph of $G$. If Dominator starts the game and both players play optimally, then the number of vertices selected during the game is the (total) connected game domination number ($γ_{\rm tcg}(G)$) $γ_{\rm cg}(G)$ of $G$. We show that $γ_{\rm tcg}(G)\in \{γ_{\rm cg}(G), γ_{\rm cg}(G) + 1, γ_{\rm cg}(G) + 2\}$, and consequently define $G$ as Class $i$ if $γ_{\rm tcg}(G) = γ_{\rm cg} + i$ for $i \in \{0,1,2\}$. A large family of Class $0$ graphs is constructed which contains all connected Cartesian product graphs and connected direct product graphs with minumum degree at least $2$. We show that no tree is Class $2$ and characterize Class $1$ trees. We provide an infinite family of Class $2$ bipartite graphs.
The domination game played on diameter 2 graphs
Let $γ_g(G)$ be the game domination number of a graph $G$. It is proved that if ${\rm diam}(G) = 2$, then $γ_g(G) \le \left\lceil \frac{n(G)}{2} \right\rceil- \left\lfloor \frac{n(G)}{11}\right\rfloor$. The bound is attained: if ${\rm diam}(G) = 2$ and $n(G) \le 10$, then $γ_g(G) = \left\lceil \frac{n(G)}{2} \right\rceil$ if and only if $G$ is one of seven sporadic graphs with $n(G)\le 6$ or the Petersen graph, and there are exactly ten graphs of diameter $2$ and order $11$ that attain the bound.

The general position number of the Cartesian product of two trees
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 104 (2021) 1-10 • View PublicationBIB
The general position number of a connected graph is the cardinality of a largest set of vertices such that no three pairwise-distinct vertices from the set lie on a common shortest path. In this paper it is proved that the general position number is additive on the Cartesian product of two trees.

The Steiner $k$-eccentricity on trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Steiner $k$-eccentricity on trees, which generalizes the previous one in the paper [X.~Li, G.~Yu, S.~Klavžar, On the average Steiner 3-eccentricity of trees, arXiv:2005.10319, 2020]. To support the algorithm, we achieve much stronger properties for the Steiner $k$-ecc tree than that in the previous paper. Based on this, a linear time algorithm is devised to calculate the Steiner $k$-eccentricity of a vertex in a tree. On the other hand, the lower and upper bounds of the average Steiner $k$-eccentricity index of a tree on order $n$ are established based on a novel technique which is quite different from that in the previous paper but much easier to follow.
Some extremal results on the chromatic-stability index
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $χ$-stability index ${\rm es}_χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of its edges whose removal results in a graph with the chromatic number smaller than that of $G$. In this paper three open problems from [European J.\ Combin.\ 84 (2020) 103042] are considered. Examples are constructed which demonstrate that a known characterization of $k$-regular ($k\le 5$) graphs $G$ with ${\rm es}_χ(G) = 1$ does not extend to $k\ge 6$. Graphs $G$ with $χ(G)=3$ for which ${\rm es}_χ(G)+{\rm es}_χ(\overline{G}) = 2$ holds are characterized. Necessary conditions on graphs $G$ which attain a known upper bound on ${\rm es}_χ(G)$ in terms of the order and the chromatic number of $G$ are derived. The conditions are proved to be sufficient when $n\equiv 2 \pmod 3$ and $χ(G)=3$.
On Rall's $1/2$-conjecture on the domination game
The $1/2$-conjecture on the domination game asserts that if $G$ is a traceable graph, then the game domination number $γ_g(G)$ of $G$ is at most $\left\lceil \frac{n(G)}{2} \right\rceil$. A traceable graph is a $1/2$-graph if $γ_g(G) = \left\lceil \frac{n(G)}{2} \right\rceil$ holds. It is proved that the so-called hatted cycles are $1/2$-graphs and that unicyclic graphs fulfill the $1/2$-conjecture. Several additional families of graphs that support the conjecture are determined and computer experiments related to the conjecture described.
Maker-Breaker resolving game
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of vertices $W$ of a graph $G$ is a resolving set if every vertex of $G$ is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to $W$. In this paper, the Maker-Breaker resolving game is introduced. The game is played on a graph $G$ by Resolver and Spoiler who alternately select a vertex of $G$ not yet chosen. Resolver wins if at some point the vertices chosen by him form a resolving set of $G$, whereas Spoiler wins if the Resolver cannot form a resolving set of $G$. The outcome of the game is denoted by $o(G)$ and $R_{\rm MB}(G)$ (resp. $S_{\rm MB}(G)$) denotes the minimum number of moves of Resolver (resp. Spoiler) to win when Resolver has the first move. The corresponding invariants for the game when Spoiler has the first move are denoted by $R'_{\rm MB}(G)$ and $S'_{\rm MB}(G)$. Invariants $R_{\rm MB}(G)$, $R'_{\rm MB}(G)$, $S_{\rm MB}(G)$, and $S'_{\rm MB}(G)$ are compared among themselves and with the metric dimension ${\rm dim}(G)$. A large class of graphs $G$ is constructed for which $R_{\rm MB}(G) > {\rm dim}(G)$ holds. The effect of twin equivalence classes and pairing resolving sets on the Maker-Breaker resolving game is described. As an application $o(G)$, as well as $R_{\rm MB}(G)$ and $R'_{\rm MB}(G)$ (or $S_{\rm MB}(G)$ and $S'_{\rm MB}(G)$), are determined for several graph classes, including trees, complete multi-partite graphs, grid graphs, and torus grid graphs.

On the average Steiner 3-eccentricity of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Steiner $k$-eccentricity of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum Steiner distance over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$ which contain $v$. In this paper Steiner $3$-eccentricity is studied on trees. Some general properties of the Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are given. A tree transformation which does not increase the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity is given. As its application, several lower and upper bounds for the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are derived.
General $d$-position sets
The general $d$-position number ${\rm gp}_d(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the cardinality of a largest set $S$ for which no three distinct vertices from $S$ lie on a common geodesic of length at most $d$. This new graph parameter generalizes the well studied general position number. We first give some results concerning the monotonic behavior of ${\rm gp}_d(G)$ with respect to the suitable values of $d$. We show that the decision problem concerning finding ${\rm gp}_d(G)$ is NP-complete for any value of $d$. The value of ${\rm gp}_d(G)$ when $G$ is a path or a cycle is computed and a structural characterization of general $d$-position sets is shown. Moreover, we present some relationships with other topics including strong resolving graphs and dissociation sets. We finish our exposition by proving that ${\rm gp}_d(G)$ is infinite whenever $G$ is an infinite graph and $d$ is a finite integer.

On the difference between the eccentric connectivity index and eccentric distance sum of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The eccentric connectivity index of a graph $G$ is $ξ^c(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)}\varepsilon(v)°(v)$, and the eccentric distance sum is $ξ^d(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)}\varepsilon(v)D(v)$, where $\varepsilon(v)$ is the eccentricity of $v$, and $D(v)$ the sum of distances between $v$ and the other vertices. A lower and an upper bound on $ξ^d(G) - ξ^c(G)$ is given for an arbitrary graph $G$. Regular graphs with diameter at most $2$ and joins of cocktail-party graphs with complete graphs form the graphs that attain the two equalities, respectively. Sharp lower and upper bounds on $ξ^d(T) - ξ^c(T)$ are given for arbitrary trees. Sharp lower and upper bounds on $ξ^d(G)+ξ^c(G)$ for arbitrary graphs $G$ are also given, and a sharp lower bound on $ξ^d(G)$ for graphs $G$ with a given radius is proved.

Constructing new families of transmission irregular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The transmission of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of distances from $v$ to all the other vertices in $G$. A graph is transmission irregular if all of its vertices have pairwise different transmissions. A starlike tree $T(k_1,\ldots,k_t)$ is a tree obtained by attaching to an isolated vertex $t$ pendant paths of lengths $k_1,\ldots,k_t$, respectively. It is proved that if a starlike tree $T(a,a+1,\ldots,a+k)$, $k\ge 2$, is of odd order, then it is transmission irregular. $T(1,2,\ldots,\ell)$, $\ell \ge 3$, is transmission irregular if and only if $\ell \notin \{r^2 + 1:\ r\ge 2\}$. Additional infinite families among the starlike trees and bi-starlike trees are determined. Transmission irregular unicyclic infinite families are also presented, in particular, the line graph of $T(a,a+1,a+2)$, $a\ge 2$, is transmission irregular if and only if $a$ is even.

The general position number of integer lattices
The general position number ${\rm gp}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the cardinality of a largest set $S$ of vertices such that no three pairwise distinct vertices from $S$ lie on a common geodesic. The $n$-dimensional grid graph $\pn$ is the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the two-way infinite path $P_\infty$. It is proved that if $n\in {\mathbb N}$, then ${\rm gp}({P_\infty^n}) = 2^{2^{n-1}}$. The result was earlier known only for $n\in \{1,2\}$ and partially for $n=3$.

Edge metric dimensions via hierarchical product and integer linear programming
If $S=\{v_1,\ldots, v_k\}$ is an ordered subset of vertices of a connected graph $G$ and $e$ is an edge of $G$, then the vector $r_G(e|S) = (d_G(v_1,e), \ldots, d_G(v_k,e))$ is the edge metric $S$-representation of $e$. If the vertices of $G$ have pairwise different edge metric $S$-representations, then $S$ is an edge metric generator for $G$. The cardinality of a smallest edge metric generator is the edge metric dimension ${\rm edim}(G)$ of $G$. A general sharp upper bound on the edge metric dimension of hierarchical products $G(U)\sqcap H$ is proved. Exact formula is derived for the case when $|U| = 1$. An integer linear programming model for computing the edge metric dimension is proposed. Several examples are provided which demonstrate how these two methods can be applied to obtain the edge metric dimensions of some applicable graphs.

Dominated and dominator colorings over (edge) corona and hierarchical products
Dominator coloring of a graph is a proper (vertex) coloring with the property that every vertex is either alone in its color class or adjacent to all vertices of at least one color class. A dominated coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that every color class is dominated with at least one vertex. The dominator chromatic number of corona products and of edge corona products is determined. Sharp lower and upper bounds are given for the dominated chromatic number of edge corona products. The dominator chromatic number of hierarchical products is bounded from above and the dominated chromatic number of hierarchical products with two factors determined. An application of dominated colorings in genetic networks is also proposed.

$S$-packing chromatic vertex-critical graphs
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 385 (2026) 77-85 • View PublicationBIB
For a non-decreasing sequence of positive integers $S = (s_1,s_2,\ldots)$, the {\em $S$-packing chromatic number} $χ_S(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $X_i$, $i \in [k]$, where vertices in $X_i$ are pairwise at distance greater than $s_i$. In this paper we introduce $S$-packing chromatic vertex-critical graphs, $χ_{S}$-critical for short, as the graphs in which $χ_{S}(G-u)<χ_{S}(G)$ for every $u\in V(G)$. This extends the earlier concept of the packing chromatic vertex-critical graphs. We show that if $G$ is $χ_{S}$-critical, then the set $\{ χ_{S}(G)-χ_{S}(G-u); \, u\in V(G) \}$ can be almost arbitrary. If $G$ is $χ_{S}$-critical and $χ_{S}(G)=k$ ($k\in \mathbb{N}$), then $G$ is called $k$-$χ_{S}$-critical. We characterize $3$-$χ_{S}$-critical graphs and partially characterize $4$-$χ_{S}$-critical graphs when $s_1>1$. We also deal with $k$-$χ_{S}$-criticality of trees and caterpillars.
