Hockey-Stick Domination and Distributional Comparison on Finite Posets
We develop a framework for comparing probability measures on finite posets via hockey-stick domination, an order relation defined through interval-counting test functions. The theory introduces poset integrals, derivatives, power functions and the associated moment functionals, all of which are invariant under poset isomorphisms. We prove that hockey-stick domination admits an exact quantitative characterization: whenever $μ$ is dominated by $ν$ in the hockey-stick order, the corresponding Zolotarev-type distance is equal to one half of the second-order poset moment of $ν-μ$. We further develop a constructive theory for generating such domination relations. In particular, we show that hockey-stick domination is preserved under direct products, disjoint unions, ordinal sums, and suitable ideal restrictions, yielding natural families of examples on chains, Boolean posets, rectangular lattices, rooted trees, and Young diagrams.
Extremal degree-based indices of general polyomino chains via dynamic programming
In this paper, we develop a dynamic programming framework for identifying extremal general polyomino chains with respect to degree-based topological indices. As a concrete application, we resolve an open problem posed in 2015 by determining, for any given number of squares, the general polyomino chains that maximize the generalized Randić index with parameter $α=-1$. We show that the extremal configurations depend explicitly on the residue class of the number of squares modulo 4. Beyond this specific result, the proposed dynamic programming approach provides a constructive and systematic methodology for tackling extremal problems in graph theory.
Maximum augmented Zagreb index on polyomino chains
In this paper, we present a dynamic programming approach for identifying extremal polyomino chains with respect to degree-based topological indices. This approach provides an explicit recurrence and constructive algorithm that enables both the computation of an extremal polyomino chain in linear time with respect to its number of squares, and the enumeration of all maximal configurations in linear time with respect to their amount. As a main application, we resolve a problem posed in 2016 by characterizing the polyomino chains that maximize the Augmented Zagreb Index ($AZI$) for any fixed number of squares. The $AZI$, a degree-based index known for its strong chemical applicability in numerous studies, attains its maximum on two specific families of polyomino chains depending on the parity of their number of squares. We also derive closed-form expressions for the maximum $AZI$ and determine the exact number of extremal configurations. The results presented in this paper are aligned with previous contributions, and establish a constructive methodology for solving extremal problems in chemical graph theory, for which we provide a link to the code in the last section.
The change of vertex energy when joining trees
In this manuscript we study how the vertex energy of a tree is affected when joined with a bipartite graph. We find an alternating pattern with respect to the coalescence vertex: the energy decreases for vertices located at odd distances and increases for those located at even distances.
