Enumeration in the lattice of $q$-decreasing words
We prove that the poset of $q$-decreasing words equipped with the componentwise order forms a lattice. We enumerate the join-irreducible elements for arbitrary $q>0$, and for any positive rational number $q$, we determine the number of coverings, intervals and meet-irreducible elements. The latter present the same structure as words over an alphabet of $2\lceil q\rceil+1$ letters avoiding $\lceil q\rceil^2+2\lceil q\rceil-1$ consecutive patterns of length 2. Furthermore, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of several of these quantities.
Emerging consecutive pattern avoidance
In this note we study the {\em asymptotic popularity}, that is, the limit probability to find a given consecutive pattern at a random position in a random permutation in the eighteen classes of permutations avoiding at least two length 3 consecutive patterns. We show that for ten classes, this popularity can be readily deduced from the structure of permutations. By combining analytical and bijective approaches, we study in details two more involved cases. The problem remains open for five classes.
The ascent lattice on Dyck paths

In the Stanley lattice defined on Dyck paths of size $n$, cover relations are obtained by replacing a valley $DU$ by a peak $UD$. We investigate a greedy version of this lattice, first introduced by Chenevière, where cover relations replace a factor $DU^k D$ by $U^kD^2$. By relating this poset to another poset recently defined by Nadeau and Tewari, we prove that this still yields a lattice, which we call the ascent lattice, $L_n$. We then count intervals in $L_n$. Their generating function is found to be algebraic of degree $3$. The proof is based on a recursive decomposition of intervals involving two catalytic parameters. The solution of the corresponding functional equation is inspired by recent work on the enumeration of walks confined to a quadrant. We also consider the order induced in $L_{mn}$ on $m$-Dyck paths, that is, paths in which all ascent lengths are multiples of $m$, and on mirrored $m$-Dyck paths, in which all descent lengths are multiples of $m$. The first poset $L_{m,n}$ is still a lattice for any $m$, while the second poset $L'_{m,n}$ is only a join semilattice when $m>1$. In both cases, the enumeration of intervals is still described by an equation in two catalytic variables. Interesting connections arise with the sylvester congruence of Hivert, Novelli and Thibon, and again with walks confined to a quadrant. We combine the latter connection with probabilistic results to give asymptotic estimates of the number of intervals in both $L_{m,n}$ and $L'_{m,n}$. Their form implies that the generating functions of intervals are no longer algebraic, nor even D-finite, when $m>1$.

An endhered (end-adhered) pattern is a subset of arcs in matchings, such that the corresponding starting points are consecutive and the same holds for the ending points. Such patterns are in one-to-one correspondence with the permutations. We focus on the occurrence frequency of such patterns in matchings and native (real-world) RNA structures with pseudoknots. We present combinatorial results related to the distribution and asymptotic behavior of the pattern 21, which corresponds to two consecutive base pairs frequently encountered in RNA, and the pattern 12, representing the archetypal minimal pseudoknot. We show that in matchings these two patterns are equidistributed, which is quite different from what we can find in native RNAs. We also examine the distribution of endhered patterns of size 3, showing how the patterns change under the transformation called endhered twist. Finally, we compute the distributions of endhered patterns of size 2 and 3 in native secondary RNA structures with pseudoknots and discuss possible outcomes of our study.
Grand zigzag knight's paths
We study the enumeration of different classes of grand knight's paths in the plane. In particular, we focus on the subsets of zigzag knight's paths that are subject to constraints. These constraints include ending at $y$-coordinate 0, bounded by a horizontal line, confined within a tube, among other considerations. We present our results using generating functions or direct closed-form expressions. We derive asymptotic results, finding approximations for quantities such as the probability that a zigzag knight's path stays in some area of the plane, or for the average of the altitude of such a path. Additionally, we exhibit some bijections between grand zigzag knight's paths and some pairs of compositions.
The Combinatorics of Motzkin Polyominoes
A word $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ over the set of positive integers is a Motzkin word whenever $w_1=\texttt{1}$, $1\leq w_k\leq w_{k-1}+1$, and $w_{k-1}\neq w_{k}$ for $k=2, \dots, n$. It can be associated to a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino whose $i$-th column contains $w_i$ cells, and all columns are bottom-justified. We reveal bijective connections between Motzkin paths, restricted Catalan words, primitive Łukasiewicz paths, and Motzkin polyominoes. Using the aforementioned bijections together with classical one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths avoiding $UDU$s, we provide generating functions with respect to the length, area, semiperimeter, value of the last symbol, and number of interior points of Motzkin polyominoes. We give asymptotics and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points over all Motzkin polyominoes of a given length. We also present and prove an engaging trinomial relation concerning the number of cells lying at different levels and first terms of the expanded $(1+x+x^2)^n$.

In this work, we study the concept of self-overlapping permutations, which is related to the larger study of consecutive patterns in permutations. We show that this concept admits a simple and clear geometrical meaning, and prove that a permutation can be represented as a sequence of non-self-overlapping ones. The above structural decomposition allows us to obtain equations for the corresponding generating functions, as well as the complete asymptotic expansions for the probability that a large random permutation is (non-)self-overlapping. In particular, we show that almost all permutations are non-self-overlapping, and that the corresponding asymptotic expansion has the self-reference property: the involved coefficients count non-self-overlapping permutations once again. We also establish complete asymptotic expansions of the distributions of very tight non-self-overlapping patterns, and discuss the similarities of the non-self-overlapping permutations to other permutation building blocks, such as indecomposable and simple permutations, as well as their associated asymptotics.

A binary word is called $q$-decreasing, for $q>0$, if inside this word each of length-maximal (in the local sense) occurrences of a factor of the form $0^a1^b$, $a>0$, satisfies $q \cdot a > b$. We bijectively link $q$-decreasing words with certain prefixes of the cutting sequence of the line $y=qx$. We show that for any real positive $q$ the number of $q$-decreasing words of length $n$ grows as $C_q \cdot Φ(q)^n$ for some constant $C_q$ which depends on $q$ but not on $n$. From previous works, it is already known that $Φ(1)$ is the golden ratio, $Φ(2)$ is equal to the tribonacci constant, $Φ(k)$ is $(k+1)$-bonacci constant. We prove that the function $Φ(q)$ is strictly increasing, discontinuous at every positive rational point, and exhibits a fractal structure related to the Stern-Brocot tree and Minkowski's question mark function.

We introduce a new poset structure on Dyck paths where the covering relation is a particular case of the relation inducing the Tamari lattice. We prove that the transitive closure of this relation endows Dyck paths with a lattice structure. We provide a trivariate generating function counting the number of Dyck paths with respect to the semilength, the numbers of outgoing and incoming edges in the Hasse diagram. We deduce the numbers of coverings, meet and join irreducible elements. As a byproduct, we present a new involution on Dyck paths that transports the bistatistic of the numbers of outgoing and incoming edges into its reverse. Finally, we give a generating function for the number of intervals, and we compare this number with the number of intervals in the Tamari lattice.

We introduce the $k$-bonacci polyominoes, a new family of polyominoes associated with the binary words avoiding $k$ consecutive $1$'s, also called generalized $k$-bonacci words. The polyominoes are very entrancing objects, considered in combinatorics and computer science. The study of polyominoes generates a rich source of combinatorial ideas. In this paper we study some properties of $k$-bonacci polyominoes. Specifically, we determine their recursive structure and, using this structure, we enumerate them according to their area, semiperimeter, and length of the corresponding words. We also introduce the $k$-bonacci graphs, then we obtain the generating functions for the total number of vertices and edges, the distribution of the degrees, and the total number of $k$-bonacci graphs that have a Hamiltonian cycle.

Grand Dyck paths with air pockets (GDAP) are a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets by allowing them to go below the $x$-axis. We present enumerative results on GDAP (or their prefixes) subject to various restrictions such as maximal/minimal height, ordinate of the last point and particular first return decomposition. In some special cases we give bijections with other known combinatorial classes.
Dyck paths with catastrophes modulo the positions of a given pattern
For any pattern $p$ of length at most two, we provide generating functions and asymptotic approximations for the number of $p$-equivalence classes of Dyck paths with catastrophes, where two paths of the same length are $p$-equivalent whenever the positions of the occurrences of the pattern $p$ are the same.

We introduce and study the new combinatorial class of Dyck paths with air pockets. We exhibit a bijection with the peakless Motzkin paths which transports several pattern statistics and give bivariate generating functions for the distribution of patterns as peaks, returns and pyramids. Then, we deduce the popularities and asymptotic expectations of these patterns and point out a link between the popularity of pyramids and a special kind of closed smooth self-overlapping curves, a subset of Fibonacci meanders. A similar study is conducted for non-decreasing Dyck paths with air pockets.

We present a quite curious generalization of multi-step Fibonacci numbers. For any positive rational $q$, we enumerate binary words of length $n$ whose maximal factors of the form $0^a1^b$ satisfy $a = 0$ or $aq > b$. When $q$ is an integer we rediscover classical multi-step Fibonacci numbers: Fibonacci, Tribonacci, Tetranacci, etc. When $q$ is not an integer, obtained recurrence relations are connected to certain restricted integer compositions. We also discuss Gray codes for these words, and a possibly novel generalization of the golden ratio.
Lattice paths with a first return decomposition constrained by the maximal height of a pattern
We consider the system of equations $A_k(x)=p(x)A_{k-1}(x)(q(x)+\sum_{i=0}^k A_i(x))$ for $k\geq r+1$ where $A_i(x)$, $0\leq i \leq r$, are some given functions and show how to obtain a close form for $A(x)=\sum_{k\geq 0}A_k(x)$. We apply this general result to the enumeration of certain subsets of Dyck, Motzkin, skew Dyck, and skew Motzkin paths, defined recursively according to the first return decomposition with a monotonically non-increasing condition relative to the maximal ordinate reached by an occurrence of a given pattern $π$.

Bijections from Dyck and Motzkin meanders with catastrophes to pattern avoiding Dyck paths
In this note, we present constructive bijections from Dyck and Motzkin meanders with catastrophes to Dyck paths avoiding some patterns. As a byproduct, we deduce correspondences from Dyck and Motzkin excursions to restricted Dyck paths.

A pure excedance in a permutation $π=π_1π_2\ldots π_n$ is a position $i<π_i$ such that there is no $j<i$ with $i\leq π_j<π_i$. We present a one-to-one correspondence on the symmetric group that transports pure excedances to descents of special kind. As a byproduct, we prove that the popularity of pure excedances equals those of pure descents on permutations, while their distributions are different.

An $n$-length binary word is $q$-decreasing, $q\geq 1$, if every of its length maximal factor of the form $0^a1^b$ satisfies $a=0$ or $q\cdot a > b$.We show constructively that these words are in bijection with binary words having no occurrences of $1^{q+1}$, and thus they are enumerated by the $(q+1)$-generalized Fibonacci numbers. We give some enumerative results and reveal similarities between $q$-decreasing words and binary words having no occurrences of $1^{q+1}$ in terms of frequency of $1$ bit. In the second part of our paper, we provide an efficient exhaustive generating algorithm for $q$-decreasing words in lexicographic order, for any $q\geq 1$, show the existence of 3-Gray codes and explain how a generating algorithm for these Gray codes can be obtained. Moreover, we give the construction of a more restrictive 1-Gray code for $1$-decreasing words, which in particular settles a conjecture stated recently in the context of interconnection networks by Eğecioğlu and Iršič.

We study the distribution and the popularity of some patterns in $k$-ary faro words, i.e. words over the alphabet $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$ obtained by interlacing the letters of two nondecreasing words of lengths differing by at most one. We present a bijection between these words and dispersed Dyck paths (i.e. Motzkin paths with all level steps on the $x$-axis) with a given number of peaks. We show how the bijection maps statistics of consecutive patterns of faro words into linear combinations of other pattern statistics on paths. Then, we deduce enumerative results by providing multivariate generating functions for the distribution and the popularity of patterns of length at most three. Finally, we consider some interesting subclasses of faro words that are permutations, involutions, derangements, or subexcedent words.
