Complexity of $C_k$-coloring in hereditary classes of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $F$, a graph $G$ is \emph{$F$-free} if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $F$. For two graphs $G$ and $H$, an \emph{$H$-coloring} of $G$ is a mapping $f:V(G)\rightarrow V(H)$ such that for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ it holds that $f(u)f(v)\in E(H)$. We are interested in the complexity of the problem $H$-{\sc Coloring}, which asks for the existence of an $H$-coloring of an input graph $G$. In particular, we consider $H$-{\sc Coloring} of $F$-free graphs, where $F$ is a fixed graph and $H$ is an odd cycle of length at least 5. This problem is closely related to the well known open problem of determining the complexity of 3-{\sc Coloring} of $P_t$-free graphs. We show that for every odd $k \geq 5$ the $C_k$-{\sc Coloring} problem, even in the list variant, can be solved in polynomial time in $P_9$-free graphs. The algorithm extends for the case of list version of $C_k$-{\sc Coloring}, where $k$ is an even number of length at least 10. On the other hand, we prove that if some component of $F$ is not a subgraph of a subdividecd claw, then the following problems are NP-complete in $F$-free graphs: a)extension version of $C_k$-{\sc Coloring} for every odd $k \geq 5$, b) list version of $C_k$-{\sc Coloring} for every even $k \geq 6$.

The saturation number of $K_{3,3}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is called $F$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $F$ as a subgraph (not necessarily induced) but the addition of any missing edge to $G$ creates a copy of $F$. The saturation number of $F$, denoted by $sat(n,F)$, is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $F$-saturated graph. Determining the saturation number of complete partite graphs is one of the most important problems in the study of saturation number. The value of $sat(n,K_{2,2})$ was shown to be $\lfloor\frac{3n-5}{2}\rfloor$ by Ollmann, and a shorter proof was later given by Tuza. For $K_{2,3}$, there has been a series of study aiming to determine $sat(n,K_{2,3})$ over the years. This was finally achieved by Chen who confirmed a conjecture of Bohman, Fonoberova, and Pikhurko that $sat(n, K_{2,3})= 2n-3$ for all $n\geq 5$. In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Pikhurko and Schmitt that $sat(n, K_{3,3})=3n-9$ when $n \geq 9$.

On graphs with no induced five-vertex path or paraglider
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,\,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. For a positive integer $t$, $P_t$ is the chordless path on $t$ vertices. A paraglider is the graph that consists of a chorless cycle $C_4$ plus a vertex adjacent to three vertices of the $C_4$. In this paper, we study the structure of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs, and show that every such graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\le \lceil \frac{3}{2}ω(G) \rceil$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and clique number of $G$, respectively. Our bound is attained by the complement of the Clebsch graph on 16 vertices. More strongly, we completely characterize all the ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs $G$ that satisfies $χ(G)> \frac{3}{2}ω(G)$. We also construct an infinite family of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs such that every graph $G$ in the family has $χ(G)=\lceil \frac{3}{2}ω(G) \rceil-1$. This shows that our upper bound is optimal up to an additive constant and that there is no $(\frac{3}{2}-ε)$-approximation algorithm to the chromatic number of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs for any $ε>0$.

An Optimal $χ$-Bound for ($P_6$, diamond)-Free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and $K_t$ be the complete graph on $t$ vertices. The diamond is the graph obtained from $K_4$ by removing an edge. In this paper we show that every ($P_6$, diamond)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\le ω(G)+3$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and clique number of $G$, respectively. Our bound is attained by the complement of the famous 27-vertex Schläfli graph. Our result unifies previously known results on the existence of linear $χ$-binding functions for several graph classes. Our proof is based on a reduction via the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem to imperfect ($P_6$, diamond)-free graphs, a careful analysis of the structure of those graphs, and a computer search that relies on a well-known characterization of 3-colourable $(P_6,K_3)$-free graphs.

$(2P_2,K_4)$-Free Graphs are 4-Colorable
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that every $(2P_2,K_4)$-free graph is 4-colorable. The bound is attained by the five-wheel and the complement of the seven-cycle. This answers an open question by Wagon \cite{Wa80} in the 1980s. Our result can also be viewed as a result in the study of the Vizing bound for graph classes. A major open problem in the study of computational complexity of graph coloring is whether coloring can be solved in polynomial time for $(4P_1,C_4)$-free graphs. Lozin and Malyshev \cite{LM17} conjecture that the answer is yes. As an application of our main result, we provide the first positive evidence to the conjecture by giving a 2-approximation algorithm for coloring $(4P_1,C_4)$-free graphs.
List-three-coloring graphs with no induced $P_6+rP_3$
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an integer $r$, the graph $P_6+rP_3$ has $r+1$ components, one of which is a path on $6$ vertices, and each of the others is a path on $3$ vertices. In this paper we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to test if a graph with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $P_6+rP_3$ is three-colorable. We also solve the list version of this problem, where each vertex is assigned a list of possible colors, which is a subset of $\{1,2,3\}$.

Colouring Square-Free Graphs without Long Induced Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
The complexity of {\sc Colouring} is fully understood for $H$-free graphs, but there are still major complexity gaps if two induced subgraphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ are forbidden. Let $H_1$ be the $s$-vertex cycle $C_s$ and $H_2$ be the $t$-vertex path $P_t$. We show that {\sc Colouring} is polynomial-time solvable for $s=4$ and $t\leq 6$, strengthening several known results. Our main approach is to initiate a study into the boundedness of the clique-width of atoms (graphs with no clique cutset) of a hereditary graph class. We first show that the classifications of boundedness of clique-width of $H$-free graphs and $H$-free atoms coincide. We then show that this is not the case if two graphs are forbidden: we prove that $(C_4,P_6)$-free atoms have clique-width at most~18. Our key proof ingredients are a divide-and-conquer approach for bounding the clique-width of a subclass of $C_4$-free graphs and the construction of a new bound on the clique-width for (general) graphs in terms of the clique-width of recursively defined subgraphs induced by homogeneous pairs and triples of sets. As a complementary result we prove that {\sc Colouring} is \NP-complete for $s=4$ and $t\geq 9$, which is the first hardness result on {\sc Colouring} for $(C_4,P_t)$-free graphs. Combining our new results with known results leads to an almost complete dichotomy for \cn restricted to $(C_s,P_t)$-free graphs.
The class of $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graphs: decomposition, algorithms, and $χ$-boundedness
Published • View PublicationBIB
As usual, $P_n$ ($n \geq 1$) denotes the path on $n$ vertices, and $C_n$ ($n \geq 3$) denotes the cycle on $n$ vertices. For a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, we say that a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-free if no induced subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to any graph in $\mathcal{H}$. We present a decomposition theorem for the class of $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graphs; in fact, we give a complete structural characterization of $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graphs that do not admit a clique-cutset. We use this decomposition theorem to show that the class of $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graphs is $χ$-bounded by a linear function (more precisely, every $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq \frac{3}{2} ω(G)$). We also use the decomposition theorem to construct an $O(n^3)$ algorithm for the minimum coloring problem, an $O(n^2m)$ algorithm for the maximum weight stable set problem, and an $O(n^3)$ algorithm for the maximum weight clique problem for this class, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices and $m$ the number of edges of the input graph.

Linearly $χ$-Bounding $(P_6,C_4)$-Free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ and $C_s$ be the path on $t$ vertices and the cycle on $s$ vertices, respectively. In this paper we show that for any $(P_6,C_4)$-free graph $G$ it holds that $χ(G)\le \frac{3}{2}ω(G)$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and clique number of $G$, respectively. %Our bound is attained by $C_5$ and the Petersen graph. Our bound is attained by several graphs, for instance, the five-cycle, the Petersen graph, the Petersen graph with an additional universal vertex, and all $4$-critical $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs other than $K_4$ (see \cite{HH17}). The new result unifies previously known results on the existence of linear $χ$-binding functions for several graph classes. Our proof is based on a novel structure theorem on $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs that do not contain clique cutsets. Using this structure theorem we also design a polynomial time $3/2$-approximation algorithm for coloring $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs. Our algorithm computes a coloring with $\frac{3}{2}ω(G)$ colors for any $(P_6,C_4)$-free graph $G$ in $O(n^2m)$ time.

A note on coloring (even-hole,cap)-free graphs
A {\em hole} is a chordless cycle of length at least four. A hole is {\em even} (resp. {\em odd}) if it contains an even (resp. odd) number of vertices. A \emph{cap} is a graph induced by a hole with an additional vertex that is adjacent to exactly two adjacent vertices on the hole. In this note, we use a decomposition theorem by Conforti et al. (1999) to show that if a graph $G$ does not contain any even hole or cap as an induced subgraph, then $χ(G)\le \lfloor\frac{3}{2}ω(G)\rfloor$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. This bound is attained by odd holes and the Hajos graph. The proof leads to a polynomial-time $3/2$-approximation algorithm for coloring (even-hole,cap)-free graphs.
Bounding the Clique-Width of $H$-free Split Graphs
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We continue a study into the boundedness of clique-width of subclasses of perfect graphs. We identify five new classes of $H$-free split graphs whose clique-width is bounded. Our main result, obtained by combining new and known results, provides a classification of all but two stubborn cases, that is, with two potential exceptions we determine all graphs $H$ for which the class of $H$-free split graphs has bounded clique-width.
Bounding the Clique-Width of $H$-free Chordal Graphs
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Brandstädt, Engelfriet, Le and Lozin proved that the class of chordal graphs with independence number at most 3 has unbounded clique-width. Brandstädt, Le and Mosca erroneously claimed that the gem and the co-gem are the only two 1-vertex $P_4$-extensions $H$ for which the class of $H$-free chordal graphs has bounded clique-width. In fact we prove that bull-free chordal and co-chair-free chordal graphs have clique-width at most 3 and 4, respectively. In particular, we find four new classes of $H$-free chordal graphs of bounded clique-width. Our main result, obtained by combining new and known results, provides a classification of all but two stubborn cases, that is, with two potential exceptions we determine all graphs $H$ for which the class of $H$-free chordal graphs has bounded clique-width. We illustrate the usefulness of this classification for classifying other types of graph classes by proving that the class of $(2P_1+P_3,K_4)$-free graphs has bounded clique-width via a reduction to $K_4$-free chordal graphs. Finally, we give a complete classification of the (un)boundedness of clique-width of $H$-free weakly chordal graphs.
Narrowing the Complexity Gap for Colouring ($C_s$,$P_t$)-Free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a positive integer $k$ and graph $G=(V,E)$, a $k$-colouring of $G$ is a mapping $c: V\rightarrow\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ whenever $uv\in E$. The $k$-Colouring problem is to decide, for a given $G$, whether a $k$-colouring of $G$ exists. The $k$-Precolouring Extension problem is to decide, for a given $G=(V,E)$, whether a colouring of a subset of $V$ can be extended to a $k$-colouring of $G$. A $k$-list assignment of a graph is an allocation of a list -a subset of $\{1,\ldots,k\}$- to each vertex, and the List $k$-Colouring problem is to decide, for a given $G$, whether $G$ has a $k$-colouring in which each vertex is coloured with a colour from its list. We continued the study of the computational complexity of these three decision problems when restricted to graphs that contain neither a cycle on $s$ vertices nor a path on $t$ vertices as induced subgraphs (for fixed positive integers $s$ and~$t$).
Bounding Clique-Width via Perfect Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. We continue a recent study into the clique-width of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs and present three new classes of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs of bounded clique-width and one of unbounded clique-width. The four new graph classes have in common that one of their two forbidden induced subgraphs is the diamond (the graph obtained from a clique on four vertices by deleting one edge). To prove boundedness of clique-width for the first three cases we develop a technique based on bounding clique covering number in combination with reduction to subclasses of perfect graphs. We extend our proof of unboundedness for the fourth case to show that Graph Isomorphism is Graph Isomorphism-complete on the same graph class. We also show the implications of our results for the computational complexity of the Colouring problem restricted to $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs.

Complexity of Coloring Graphs without Paths and Cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_t$ and $C_\ell$ denote a path on $t$ vertices and a cycle on $\ell$ vertices, respectively. In this paper we study the $k$-coloring problem for $(P_t,C_\ell)$-free graphs. Maffray and Morel, and Bruce, Hoang and Sawada, have proved that 3-colorability of $P_5$-free graphs has a finite forbidden induced subgraphs characterization, while Hoang, Moore, Recoskie, Sawada, and Vatshelle have shown that $k$-colorability of $P_5$-free graphs for $k \geq 4$ does not. These authors have also shown, aided by a computer search, that 4-colorability of $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs does have a finite forbidden induced subgraph characterization. We prove that for any $k$, the $k$-colorability of $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs has a finite forbidden induced subgraph characterization. We provide the full lists of forbidden induced subgraphs for $k=3$ and $k=4$. As an application, we obtain certifying polynomial time algorithms for 3-coloring and 4-coloring $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs. (Polynomial time algorithms have been previously obtained by Golovach, Paulusma, and Song, but those algorithms are not certifying); To complement these results we show that in most other cases the $k$-coloring problem for $(P_t,C_\ell)$-free graphs is NP-complete. Specifically, for $\ell=5$ we show that $k$-coloring is NP-complete for $(P_t,C_5)$-free graphs when $k \ge 4$ and $t \ge 7$; for $\ell \ge 6$ we show that $k$-coloring is NP-complete for $(P_t,C_\ell)$-free graphs when $k \ge 5$, $t \ge 6$; and additionally, for $\ell=7$, we show that $k$-coloring is also NP-complete for $(P_t,C_7)$-free graphs if $k = 4$ and $t\ge 9$. This is the first systematic study of the complexity of the $k$-coloring problem for $(P_t,C_\ell)$-free graphs. We almost completely classify the complexity for the cases when $k \geq 4, \ell \geq 4$, and identify the last three open cases.

Improved Complexity Results on $k$-Coloring $P_t$-Free Graphs

A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We denote by $P_k$ and $C_k$ the path and the cycle on $k$ vertices, respectively. In this paper, we prove that 4-COLORING is NP-complete for $P_7$-free graphs, and that 5-COLORING is NP-complete for $P_6$-free graphs. These two results improve all previous results on $k$-coloring $P_t$-free graphs, and almost complete the classification of complexity of $k$-COLORING $P_t$-free graphs for $k\ge 4$ and $t\ge 1$, leaving as the only missing case 4-COLORING $P_6$-free graphs. We expect that 4-COLORING is polynomial time solvable for $P_6$-free graphs; in support of this, we describe a polynomial time algorithm for 4-COLORING $P_6$-free graphs which are also $P$-free, where $P$ is the graph obtained from $C_4$ by adding a new vertex and making it adjacent to exactly one vertex on the $C_4$.
