Levelable graphs
We study a family of positive weighted well-covered graphs, which we call levelable graphs, that are related to a construction of level artinian rings in commutative algebra. A graph $G$ is levelable if there exists a weight function with positive integer values on the vertices of $G$ such that $G$ is well-covered with respect to this weight function. That is, the sum of the weights in any maximal independent set of vertices of $G$ is the same. We describe some of the basic properties of levelable graphs and classify the levelable graphs for some families of graphs, e.g., trees, cubic circulants, Cameron--Walker graphs. We also explain the connection between levelable graphs and a class of level artinian rings. Applying a result of Brown and Nowakowski about weighted well-covered graphs, we show that for most graphs, their edge ideals are not Cohen--Macaulay.

Density of linearity index in the interval of matching numbers
Given integers $2 \leq p \leq c \leq q$, we construct a finite simple graph $G$ with $ν_1(G) = p$ and $ν(G) = q$ for which the squarefree power $I(G)^{[k]}$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ has linear quotients for each $c \leq k \leq q$ and is not linearly related for each $1 \leq k < c$, where $ν_1(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$ and $ν(G)$ is the matching number of $G$.

A classification of van der Waerden complexes with linear resolution
In 2017, Ehrenborg, Govindaiah, Park, and Readdy defined the van der Waerden complex ${\tt vdW}(n,k)$ to be the simplicial complex whose facets correspond to all the arithmetic sequences on the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ of a fixed length $k$. To complement a classification of the Cohen--Macaulay van der Waerden complexes obtained by Hooper and Van Tuyl in 2019, a classification of van der Waerden complexes with linear resolution is presented. Furthermore, we show that the Stanley--Reisner ring of a Cohen--Macaulay van der Waerden complex is level.

Vertex connectivity of chordal graphs
Let $G$ be a finite graph and $κ(G)$ the vertex connectivity of $G$. A chordal graph $G$ is called chordal$^*$ if no vertex of $G$ is adjacent to all other vertices of $G$. Using the syzygy theory in commutative algebra, it is proved that every chordal$^*$ graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $κ(G) \leq (n - 1) - \lceil2\sqrt{n}-2\,\rceil$. Furthermore, given an integer $0 \leq κ\leq (n - 1) - \lceil2\sqrt{n}-2\,\rceil$, a chordal$^*$ graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfying $κ(G) = κ$ is constructed.
Gapfree graphs and powers of edge ideals with linear quotients
Let $I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a gapfree graph $G$. An open conjecture of Nevo and Peeva states that $I(G)^q$ has linear resolution for $q\gg 0$. We present a promising approach to this challenging conjecture by investigating the stronger property of linear quotients. Specifically, we make the conjecture that if $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for some integer $q\geq 1$, then $I(G)^{s}$ has linear quotients for all $s\geq q$. We give a partial solution to this conjecture, and identify conditions under which only finitely many powers need to be checked. It is known that if $G$ does not contain a cricket, a diamond, or a $C_4$, then $I(G)^q$ has linear resolution for $q \geq 2$. We construct a family of gapfree graphs $G$ containing cricket, diamond, $C_4$ together with $C_5$ as induced subgraphs of $G$ for which $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for $q \ge 2$.

Lattice polytopes with the minimal volume
Published in Australasian J. Combin. 90 (2024), 357--362 • Search Publication
Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a lattice polytope of dimension $d$. Let $b(\mathcal{P})$ denote the number of lattice points belonging to the boundary of $\mathcal{P}$ and $c(\mathcal{P})$ that to the interior of $\mathcal{P}$. It follows from the lower bound theorem of Ehrhart polynomials that, when $c > 0$, \[ {\rm vol}(\mathcal{P}) \geq (d \cdot c(\mathcal{P}) + (d-1) \cdot b(\mathcal{P}) - d^2 + 2)/d!, \] where ${\rm vol}(\mathcal{P})$ is the (Lebesgue) volume of $\mathcal{P}$. Pick's formula guarantees that, when $d = 2$, the above inequality is an equality. In the present paper several classes of lattice polytopes for which the equality here holds will be presented.

Diameter and connectivity of finite simple graphs II
Let $G$ be a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $[n] = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ and $κ(G) \geq 1$ its vertex connectivity. Let $f(G)$ denote the number of free vertices of $G$ and $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ the diameter of $G$. The final goal of this paper is to determine all sequences of integers $(n,f,d,k)$ with $n\geq 8$, $f\geq 0$, $d\geq 2$ and $k\geq 1$ for which there exists a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $[n]$ with $f=f(G)$, $d=\mathrm{diam}(G)$ and $k=κ(G)$.

Scarf complexes of graphs and their powers
Every multigraded free resolution of a monomial ideal I contains the Scarf multidegrees of I. We say I has a Scarf resolution if the Scarf multidegrees are sufficient to describe a minimal free resolution of I. The main question of this paper is which graphs G have edge ideal I(G) with a Scarf resolution? We show that I(G) has a Scarf resolution if and only if G is a gap-free forest. We also classify connected graphs for which all powers of I(G) have Scarf resolutions. Along the way, we give a concrete description of the Scarf complex of any forest. For a general graph, we give a recursive construction for its Scarf complex based on Scarf complexes of induced subgraphs.

A New Invariant of Lattice polytopes
The maximal degree of monomials belonging to the unique minimal system of monomial generators of the canonical module $ω(K[{\mathcal P}])$ of the toric ring $K[{\mathcal P}]$ defined by a lattice polytope ${\mathcal P}$ will be studied. It is shown that if ${\mathcal P}$ possesses an interior lattice point, then the maximal degree is at most ${\rm dim} {\mathcal P} - 1$, and that this bound is the best possible in general.

Ideals with componentwise linear powers
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 833-841 • View PublicationBIB
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $K$, and let $A$ be a finitely generated standard graded $S$-algebra. We show that if the defining ideal of $A$ has a quadratic initial ideal, then all the graded components of $A$ are componentwise linear. Applying this result to the Rees ring $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of a graded ideal $I$ gives a criterion on $I$ to have componentwise linear powers. Moreover, for any given graph $G$, a construction on $G$ is presented which produces graphs whose cover ideals $I_G$ have componentwise linear powers. This in particular implies that for any Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graph $G$ all powers of $I_G$ have linear resolutions. Moreover, forming a cone on special graphs like unmixed chordal graphs, path graphs and Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs produces cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.

The minimal volume of a lattice polytope
Published in Australasian J. Combin. 85 (2023), 159--163 • Search Publication
Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a lattice polytope of dimension $d$. Let $b$ denote the number of lattice points belonging to the boundary of $\mathcal{P}$ and $c$ that to the interior of $\mathcal{P}$. It follows from a lower bound theorem of Ehrhart polynomials that, when $c > 0$, the volume of $\mathcal{P}$ is bigger than or equal to $(dc + (d-1)b - d^2 + 2)/d!$. In the present paper, via triangulations, a short and elementary proof of the minimal volume formula is given.

Toric rings arising from vertex cover ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the sortability concept to monomial ideals which are not necessarily generated in one degree and as an application we obtain normal Cohen-Macaulay toric rings attached to vertex cover ideals of graphs. Moreover, we consider a construction on a graph called a clique multi-whiskering which always produces vertex cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.
The normalized depth function of squarefree powers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The depth of squarefree powers of a squarefree monomial ideal is introduced. Let $I$ be a squarefree monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. The $k$-th squarefree power $I^{[k]}$ of $I$ is the ideal of $S$ generated by those squarefree monomials $u_1\cdots u_k$ with each $u_i\in G(I)$, where $G(I)$ is the unique minimal system of monomial generators of $I$. Let $d_k$ denote the minimum degree of monomials belonging to $G(I^{[k]})$. One has $\operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) \geq d_k -1$. Setting $g_I(k) = \operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) - (d_k - 1)$, one calls $g_I(k)$ the normalized depth function of $I$. The computational experience strongly invites us to propose the conjecture that the normalized depth function is nonincreasing. In the present paper, especially the normalized depth function of the edge ideal of a finite simple graph is deeply studied.

Stable set rings which are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum
Published • View PublicationBIB
The non-Gorenstein locus of stable set rings of finite simple perfect graphs is studied. We describe combinatorially those perfect graphs whose stable set rings are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum. In addition, we show that, in general, for Cohen--Macaulay graded algebras, their Cohen--Macaulay type and residue are largely independent.

Squarefree powers of edge ideals of forests
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 28(2) (2021), P2.32 • View PublicationBIB
Let $I(G)^{[k]}$ denote the $k$th squarefree power of the edge ideal of $G$. When $G$ is a forest, we provide a sharp upper bound for the regularity of $I(G)^{[k]}$ in terms of the $k$-admissable matching number of $G$. For any positive integer $k$, we classify all forests $G$ such that $I(G)^{[k]}$ has linear resolution. We also give a combinatorial formula for the regularity of $I(G)^{[2]}$ for any forest $G$.

Diameter and connectivity of finite simple graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ and $κ(G) \geq 1$ its vertex connectivity. Let $f(G)$ denote the number of free vertices of $G$ and $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ the diameter of $G$. Being motivated by the computation of the depth of the binomial edge ideal of $G$, the possible sequences $(n, q, f, d)$ of integers for which there is a finite simple non-complete connected graph $G$ on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ with $q = κ(G), f = f(G), d = \mathrm{diam}(G)$ satisfying $f + d = n + 2 - q$ will be determined. Furthermore, finite simple non-complete connected graphs $G$ on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ satisfying $f(G) + \mathrm{diam}(G) = n + 2 - κ(G)$ will be classified.
