Random 2-cell embeddings of a given graph $G$ are obtained by choosing a random local rotation around every vertex. We analyze the expected number of faces, $\mathbb{E}[F_G]$, of such an embedding which is equivalent to studying its average genus. So far, tight results are known for two families called monopoles and dipoles. We extend the dipole result to a more general family called multistars, i.e., loopless multigraphs in which there is a vertex incident with all the edges. In particular, we show that the expected number of faces of every multistar with $n$ nonleaf edges lies in an interval of length $2/(n + 1)$ centered at the expected number of faces of an $n$-edge dipole. This allows us to derive bounds on $\mathbb{E}[F_G]$ for any given graph $G$ in terms of vertex degrees. We conjecture that $\mathbb{E}[F_G ] \le O(n)$ for any simple $n$-vertex graph $G$.

Motivated by the Beck-Fiala conjecture, we study the discrepancy problem in two related models of random hypergraphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. In the first (edge-independent) model, a random hypergraph $H_1$ is constructed by fixing a parameter $p$ and allowing each of the $n$ vertices to join each of the $m$ edges independently with probability $p$. In the parameter range in which $pn \rightarrow \infty$ and $pm \rightarrow \infty$, we show that with high probability (w.h.p.) $H_1$ has discrepancy at least $Ω(2^{-n/m} \sqrt{pn})$ when $m = O(n)$, and at least $Ω(\sqrt{pn \logγ})$ when $m \gg n$, where $γ= \min\{ m/n, pn\}$. In the second (edge-dependent) model, $d$ is fixed and each vertex of $H_2$ independently joins exactly $d$ edges uniformly at random. We obtain analogous results for this model by generalizing the techniques used for the edge-independent model with $p=d/m$. Namely, for $d \rightarrow \infty$ and $dn/m \rightarrow \infty$, we prove that w.h.p. $H_{2}$ has discrepancy at least $Ω(2^{-n/m} \sqrt{dn/m})$ when $m = O(n)$, and at least $Ω(\sqrt{(dn/m) \logγ})$ when $m \gg n$, where $γ=\min\{m/n, dn/m\}$. Furthermore, we obtain nearly matching asymptotic upper bounds on the discrepancy in both models (when $p=d/m$), in the dense regime of $m \gg n$. Specifically, we apply the partial colouring lemma of Lovett and Meka to show that w.h.p. $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ each have discrepancy $O( \sqrt{dn/m} \log(m/n))$, provided $d \rightarrow \infty$, $d n/m \rightarrow \infty$ and $m \gg n$. This result is algorithmic, and together with the work of Bansal and Meka characterizes how the discrepancy of each random hypergraph model transitions from $Θ(\sqrt{d})$ to $o(\sqrt{d})$ as $m$ varies from $m=Θ(n)$ to $m \gg n$.

The 3-coloring of hereditary graph classes has been a deeply-researched problem in the last decade. A hereditary graph class is characterized by a (possibly infinite) list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs $H_1,H_2,\ldots$; the graphs in the class are called $(H_1,H_2,\ldots)$-free. The complexity of 3-coloring is far from being understood, even for classes defined by a few small forbidden induced subgraphs. For $H$-free graphs, the complexity is settled for any $H$ on up to seven vertices. There are only two unsolved cases on eight vertices, namely $2P_4$ and $P_8$. For $P_8$-free graphs, some partial results are known, but to the best of our knowledge, $2P_4$-free graphs have not been explored yet. In this paper, we show that the 3-coloring problem is polynomial-time solvable on $(2P_4,C_5)$-free graphs.

Recently, Dvořák, Norin, and Postle introduced flexibility as an extension of list coloring on graphs [JGT 19']. In this new setting, each vertex $v$ in some subset of $V(G)$ has a request for a certain color $r(v)$ in its list of colors $L(v)$. The goal is to find an $L$ coloring satisfying many, but not necessarily all, of the requests.
The main studied question is whether there exists a universal constant $ε>0$ such that any graph $G$ in some graph class $\mathcal{C}$ satisfies at least $ε$ proportion of the requests. More formally, for $k > 0$ the goal is to prove that for any graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ on vertex set $V$, with any list assignment $L$ of size $k$ for each vertex, and for every $R \subseteq V$ and a request vector $(r(v): v\in R, ~r(v) \in L(v))$, there exists an $L$-coloring of $G$ satisfying at least $ε|R|$ requests. If this is true, then $\mathcal{C}$ is called $ε$-flexible for lists of size $k$.
Choi et al. [arXiv 20'] introduced the notion of weak flexibility, where $R = V$. We further develop this direction by introducing a tool to handle weak flexibility. We demonstrate this new tool by showing that for every positive integer $b$ there exists $ε(b)>0$ so that the class of planar graphs without $K_4, C_5 , C_6 , C_7, B_b$ is weakly $ε(b)$-flexible for lists of size $4$ (here $K_n$, $C_n$ and $B_n$ are the complete graph, a cycle, and a book on $n$ vertices, respectively). We also show that the class of planar graphs without $K_4, C_5 , C_6 , C_7, B_5$ is $ε$-flexible for lists of size $4$. The results are tight as these graph classes are not even 3-colorable.

For a given $\varepsilon > 0$, we say that a graph $G$ is $\varepsilon$-flexibly $k$-choosable if the following holds: for any assignment $L$ of color lists of size $k$ on $V(G)$, if a preferred color from a list is requested at any set $R$ of vertices, then at least $\varepsilon |R|$ of these requests are satisfied by some $L$-coloring. We consider the question of flexible choosability in several graph classes with certain degeneracy conditions. We characterize the graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ that are $\varepsilon$-flexibly $Δ$-choosable for some $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(Δ) > 0$, which answers a question of Dvořák, Norin, and Postle [List coloring with requests, JGT 2019]. In particular, we show that for any $Δ\geq 3$, any graph of maximum degree $Δ$ that is not isomorphic to $K_{Δ+1}$ is $\frac{1}{6Δ}$-flexibly $Δ$-choosable. Our fraction of $\frac{1}{6 Δ}$ is within a constant factor of being the best possible. We also show that graphs of treewidth $2$ are $\frac{1}{3}$-flexibly $3$-choosable, answering a question of Choi et al.~[arXiv 2020], and we give conditions for list assignments by which graphs of treewidth $k$ are $\frac{1}{k+1}$-flexibly $(k+1)$-choosable. We show furthermore that graphs of treedepth $k$ are $\frac{1}{k}$-flexibly $k$-choosable. Finally, we introduce a notion of flexible degeneracy, which strengthens flexible choosability, and we show that apart from a well-understood class of exceptions, 3-connected non-regular graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ are flexibly $(Δ- 1)$-degenerate.
Clique-Width: Harnessing the Power of Atoms

Many NP-complete graph problems are polynomial-time solvable on graph classes of bounded clique-width. Several of these problems are polynomial-time solvable on a hereditary graph class ${\cal G}$ if they are so on the atoms (graphs with no clique cut-set) of ${\cal G}$. Hence, we initiate a systematic study into boundedness of clique-width of atoms of hereditary graph classes. A graph $G$ is $H$-free if $H$ is not an induced subgraph of $G$, and it is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it is both $H_1$-free and $H_2$-free. A class of $H$-free graphs has bounded clique-width if and only if its atoms have this property. This is no longer true for $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs, as evidenced by one known example. We prove the existence of another such pair $(H_1,H_2)$ and classify the boundedness of clique-width on $(H_1,H_2)$-free atoms for all but 18 cases.

A graph where each vertex $v$ has a list $L(v)$ of available colors is $L$-colorable if there is a proper coloring such that the color of $v$ is in $L(v)$ for each $v$. A graph is $k$-choosable if every assignment $L$ of at least $k$ colors to each vertex guarantees an $L$-coloring. Given a list assignment $L$, an $L$-request for a vertex $v$ is a color $c\in L(v)$. In this paper, we look at a variant of the widely studied class of precoloring extension problems from [Z. Dvořák, S. Norin, and L. Postle: List coloring with requests. J. Graph Theory 2019], wherein one must satisfy "enough", as opposed to all, of the requested set of precolors. A graph $G$ is $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $k$ if for any $k$-list assignment $L$, and any set $S$ of $L$-requests, there is an $L$-coloring of $G$ satisfying an $\varepsilon$-fraction of the requests in $S$. It is conjectured that planar graphs are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$, yet it is proved only for list size $6$ and for certain subclasses of planar graphs. We give a stronger version of the main tool used in the proofs of the aforementioned results. By doing so, we improve upon a result by Masařík and show that planar graphs without $K_4^-$ are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$. We also prove that planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $3$-cycle distance at least 2 are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $4$. Finally, we introduce a new (slightly weaker) form of $\varepsilon$-flexibility where each vertex has exactly one request. In that setting, we provide a stronger tool and we demonstrate its usefulness to further extend the class of graphs that are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$.

The celebrated Erdős-Pósa theorem states that every undirected graph that does not admit a family of $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles contains a feedback vertex set (a set of vertices hitting all cycles in the graph) of size $O(k \log k)$. After being known for long as Younger's conjecture, a similar statement for directed graphs has been proven in 1996 by Reed, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas. However, in their proof, the dependency of the size of the feedback vertex set on the size of vertex-disjoint cycle packing is not elementary.
We show that if we compare the size of a minimum feedback vertex set in a directed graph with the quarter-integral cycle packing number, we obtain a polynomial bound. More precisely, we show that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^4)$. Furthermore, a variant of our proof shows that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most two of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^6)$.
On the way there we prove a more general result about quarter-integral packing of subgraphs of high directed treewidth: for every pair of positive integers $a$ and $b$, if a directed graph $G$ has directed treewidth $Ω(a^6 b^8 \log^2(ab))$, then one can find in $G$ a family of $a$ subgraphs, each of directed treewidth at least $b$, such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four subgraphs.

Proper graph coloring assigns different colors to adjacent vertices of the graph. Usually, the number of colors is fixed or as small as possible. Consider applications (e.g. variants of scheduling) where colors represent limited resources and graph represents conflicts, i.e., two adjacent vertices cannot obtain the same resource. In such applications, it is common that some vertices have preferred resource(s). However, unfortunately, it is not usually possible to satisfy all such preferences. The notion called flexibility was recently defined in [Dvořák, Norin, Postle: List coloring with requests, Journal of Graph Theory 2019]. There instead of satisfying all the preferences the aim is to satisfy at least a constant fraction of the request. Recently, the structural properties of planar graphs in terms of flexibility were investigated. We continue this line of research. Let G be a planar graph with a list assignment L. Suppose a preferred color is given for some of the vertices. We prove that if G is a planar graph without 4-cycles and all lists have size at least five, then there exists an L-coloring respecting at least a constant fraction of the preferences.

On difference graphs and the local dimension of posets

The dimension of a partially-ordered set (poset), introduced by Dushnik and Miller (1941), has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently, Ueckerdt (2016) proposed a variation called local dimension which makes use of partial linear extensions. While local dimension is bounded above by dimension, they can be arbitrarily far apart as the dimension of the standard example is $n$ while its local dimension is only $3$.
Hiraguchi (1955) proved that the maximum dimension of a poset of order $n$ is $n/2$. However, we find a very different result for local dimension, proving a bound of $Θ(n/\log n)$. This follows from connections with covering graphs using difference graphs which are bipartite graphs whose vertices in a single class have nested neighborhoods.
We also prove that the local dimension of the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice is $Ω(n/\log n)$ and make progress toward resolving a version of the removable pair conjecture for local dimension.

A packing $k$-coloring for some integer $k$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping
$\varphi:V\to\{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that any two vertices $u, v$ of color $\varphi(u)=\varphi(v)$ are in distance at least $\varphi(u)+1$. This concept is motivated by frequency assignment problems. The \emph{packing chromatic number} of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that there exists a packing $k$-coloring of $G$.
Fiala and Golovach showed that determining the packing chromatic number for chordal graphs is \NP-complete for diameter exactly 5. While the problem is easy to solve for diameter 2, we show \NP-completeness for any diameter at least 3. Our reduction also shows that the packing chromatic number is hard to approximate within $n^{{1/2}-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$.
In addition, we design an \FPT algorithm for interval graphs of bounded diameter. This leads us to exploring the problem of finding a partial coloring that maximizes the number of colored vertices.

Steinberg and Tovey proved that every n-vertex planar triangle-free graph has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and described an infinite class of tight examples. We show that all n-vertex planar triangle-free graphs except for this one infinite class have independent sets of size at least (n+2)/3.
