Monochromatic arithmetic progressions in automatic sequences with group structure
We determine asymptotic growth rates for lengths of monochromatic arithmetic progressions in certain automatic sequences. In particular, we look at (one-sided) fixed points of aperiodic, primitive, bijective substitutions and spin substitutions, which are generalisations of the Thue--Morse and Rudin--Shapiro substitutions, respectively. For such infinite words, we show that there exists a subsequence $\left\{d_n\right\}$ of differences along which the maximum length $A(d_n)$ of a monochromatic arithmetic progression (with fixed difference $d_n$) grows at least polynomially in $d_n$. Explicit upper and lower bounds for the growth exponent can be derived from a finite group associated to the substitution. As an application, we obtain bounds for a van der Waerden-type number for a class of colourings parametrised by the size of the alphabet and the length of the substitution.

On long arithmetic progressions in binary Morse-like words
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, 934 (2022) 65-80 • View PublicationBIB
We present results on the existence of long arithmetic progressions in the Thue-Morse word and in a class of generalised Thue-Morse words. Our arguments are inspired by van der Waerden's proof for the existence of arbitrary long monochromatic arithmetic progressions in any finite colouring of the (positive) integers.

Substitution-based structures with absolutely continuous spectrum
Published in Indagationes Mathematicae 29 (2018) 1072-1086 • View PublicationBIB
By generalising Rudin's construction of an aperiodic sequence, we derive new substitution-based structures which have purely absolutely continuous diffraction and mixed dynamical spectrum, with absolutely continuous and pure point parts. We discuss several examples, including a construction based on Fourier matrices which yields constant-length substitutions for any length.

Modifying Rudin's original construction of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence, we derive a new substitution-based sequence with purely absolutely continuous diffraction spectrum.

On the entropy and letter frequencies of powerfree words
Published in Entropy 10 (2008), 590-612 • View PublicationBIB
We review the recent progress in the investigation of powerfree words, with particular emphasis on binary cubefree and ternary squarefree words. Besides various bounds on the entropy, we provide bounds on letter frequencies and consider their empirical distribution obtained by an enumeration of binary cubefree words up to length 80.
Coincidence rotations of the root lattice $A_4$
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 29 (2008) 1808-1819 • View PublicationBIB
The coincidence site lattices of the root lattice $A_4$ are considered, and the statistics of the corresponding coincidence rotations according to their indices is expressed in terms of a Dirichlet series generating function. This is possible via an embedding of $A_4$ into the icosian ring with its rich arithmetic structure, which recently (arXiv:math.MG/0702448) led to the classification of the similar sublattices of $A_4$.

Multiple planar coincidences with N-fold symmetry
Published in Zeitschrift fuer Kristallographie 221 (2006) 571-581 • View PublicationBIB
Planar coincidence site lattices and modules with N-fold symmetry are well understood in a formulation based on cyclotomic fields, in particular for the class number one case, where they appear as certain principal ideals in the corresponding ring of integers. We extend this approach to multiple coincidences, which apply to triple or multiple junctions. In particular, we give explicit results for spectral, combinatorial and asymptotic properties in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.

On the Entropy and Letter Frequencies of Ternary Square-Free Words
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004) #R14 • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate all ternary length-l square-free words, which are words avoiding squares of words up to length l, for l<=24. We analyse the singular behaviour of the corresponding generating functions. This leads to new upper entropy bounds for ternary square-free words. We then consider ternary square-free words with fixed letter densities, thereby proving exponential growth for certain ensembles with various letter densities. We derive consequences for the free energy and entropy of ternary square-free words.

Bravais colourings of planar modules with N-fold symmetry
Published in Zeitschrift f. Kristallographie 219 (2004) 72-80 • View PublicationBIB
The first step in investigating colour symmetries for periodic and aperiodic systems is the determination of all colouring schemes that are compatible with the symmetry group of the underlying structure, or with a subgroup of it. For an important class of colourings of planar structures, this mainly combinatorial question can be addressed with methods of algebraic number theory. We present the corresponding results for all planar modules with N-fold symmetry that emerge as the rings of integers in cyclotomic fields with class number one. The counting functions are multiplicative and can be encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, which turn out to be the Dedekind zeta functions of the corresponding cyclotomic fields.

Combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography
Published in In: Quasicrystals - Structure and Physical Properties, ed. H.-R. Trebin (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2003), pp. 160-171 • Search Publication
Several combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography are reviewed with special emphasis on a unified approach, valid for both crystals and quasicrystals. In particular, we consider planar sublattices, similarity sublattices, coincidence sublattices, their module counterparts, and central and averaged shelling. The corresponding counting functions are encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, with explicit results for the triangular lattice and the twelvefold symmetric shield tiling. Other combinatorial properties are briefly summarised.

Improved bounds on the number of ternary square-free words
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 4 (2001), Ar ticle 01.2.7 • Search Publication
Improved upper and lower bounds on the number of square-free ternary words are obtained. The upper bound is based on the enumeration of square-free ternary words up to length 110. The lower bound is derived by constructing generalised Brinkhuis triples. The problem of finding such triples can essentially be reduced to a combinatorial problem, which can efficiently be treated by computer. In particular, it is shown that the number of square-free ternary words of length n grows at least as 65^(n/40), replacing the previous best lower bound of 2^(n/17).

The Entropy of Square-Free Words
Published in Mathl. Comput. Modelling 26 (1997) 13--26 • View PublicationBIB
Finite alphabets of at least three letters permit the construction of square-free words of infinite length. We show that the entropy density is strictly positive and derive reasonable lower and upper bounds. Finally, we present an approximate formula which is asymptotically exact with rapid convergence in the number of letters.
Coordination Sequences and Critical Points
Published in Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Quasicrystals, Eds. S. Takeuchi and T. Fujiwara (World Scientific, Singapore, 1998), pp. 124-127 • Search Publication
Coordination sequences of periodic and quasiperiodic graphs are analysed. These count the number of points that can be reached from a given point of the graph by a number of steps along its bonds, thus generalising the familiar coordination number which is just the first member of this series. A possible application to the theory of critical phenomena in lattice models is outlined.
