Inverse model for network construction: (δ(G), I' (G)) -> G
The isolated toughness variant is a salient parameter for measuring the vulnerability of networks, which is inherently related to fractional factors (used to characterize the feasibility of data transmission). The combination of minimum degree and the corresponding tight bound of isolated toughness variant for fractional factors provide reference standards for network construction. However, previous advances only focused on how to select the optimal parameter criteria from Pareto front, without any suggestion for the construction of specific networks. To overcome this deficiency, this paper proposes an inverse model from $(δ(G),I'(G))$ to $G$, by means of evolutionary computing approach, we propose a novel inverse model to obtain the optimal solutions for candidate graphs. The main procedure is composed of pseudo-greedy acceleration, cross-mutation and diversity enhancement modules. The practicality of the algorithm is verified by means of pilot experiments. The code in this paper is made public on https://github.com/AizhEngHN/Inverse-model-for-network-construction-G-I-G-G.

On the conjecture about the exponential reduced Sombor index
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a graph and $d(v)$ be the degree of the vertex $v\in V(G)$. The exponential reduced Sombor index of $G$, denoted by $e^{SO_{red}}(G)$, is defined as $$e^{SO_{red}}(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}e^{\sqrt{(d(u)-1)^2+(d(v)-1)^2}}.$$ We obtain a characterization of extremal trees with the maximal exponential reduced Sombor index among all chemical trees of order $n$. This result shows the conjecture on the exponential reduced Sombor index proposed by Liu, You, Tang and Liu [On the reduced Sombor index and its applications, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 86 (2021) 729--753] is negative.

Mostar index of graph operations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Very recently, a bond-additive topological descriptor, known as the Mostar index, has been proposed as a measure of peripherality in graphs and networks. In this article, we compute the Mostar index of corona product, Cartesian product, join, lexicographic product, Indu-Bala product and subdivision vertex-edge join of graphs and apply these results to find the Mostar index of various classes of chemical graphs and nanostructures.

The Extension Degree Conditions for Fractional Factor
In Gao's previous work, the authors determined several graph degree conditions of a graph which admits fractional factor in particular settings. It was revealed that these degree conditions are tight if $b=f(x)=g(x)=a$ for all vertices $x$ in $G$. In this paper, we continue to discuss these degree conditions for admitting fractional factor in the setting that several vertices and edges are removed and there is a difference $Δ$ between $g(x)$ and $f(x)$ for every vertex $x$ in $G$. These obtained new degree conditions reformulate Gao's previous conclusions, and show how $Δ$ acts in the results. Furthermore, counterexamples are structured to reveal the sharpness of degree conditions in the setting $f(x)=g(x)+Δ$.
$k$-Foldability of Words

We extend results regarding a combinatorial model introduced by Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko (2017+) which generalizes the folding of the RNA molecule in biology. Consider a word on alphabet $\{A_1, \overline{A}_1, \ldots, A_m, \overline{A}_m\}$ in which $\overline{A}_i$ is called the complement of $A_i$. A word $w$ is foldable if can be wrapped around a rooted plane tree $T$, starting at the root and working counterclockwise such that one letter labels each half edge and the two letters labeling the same edge are complements. The tree $T$ is called $w$-valid. We define a bijection between edge-colored plane trees and words folded onto trees. This bijection is used to characterize and enumerate words for which there is only one valid tree. We follow up with a characterization of words for which there exist exactly two valid trees. In addition, we examine the set $\mathcal{R}(n,m)$ consisting of all integers $k$ for which there exists a word of length $2n$ with exactly $k$ valid trees. Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko showed that for the $n$th Catalan number $C_n$, $\{C_n,C_{n-1}\}\subset \mathcal{R}(n,1)$ but $k\not\in\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ for $C_{n-1}<k<C_n$. We describe a superset of $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ in terms of the Catalan numbers by which we establish more missing intervals. We also prove $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ contains all non-negative integer less than $n+1$.

Sign patterns that require $\mathbb{H}_n$ exist for each $n\geq 4$
The refined inertia of a square real matrix $A$ is the ordered $4$-tuple $(n_+, n_-, n_z, 2n_p)$, where $n_+$ (resp., $n_-$) is the number of eigenvalues of $A$ with positive (resp., negative) real part, $n_z$ is the number of zero eigenvalues of $A$, and $2n_p$ is the number of nonzero pure imaginary eigenvalues of $A$. For $n \geq 3$, the set of refined inertias $\mathbb{H}_n=\{(0, n, 0, 0), (0, n-2, 0, 2), (2, n-2, 0, 0)\}$ is important for the onset of Hopf bifurcation in dynamical systems. We say that an $n\times n$ sign pattern ${\cal A}$ requires $\mathbb{H}_n$ if $\mathbb{H}_n=\{\text{ri}(B) | B \in Q({\cal A})\}$. Bodine et al. conjectured that no $n\times n$ irreducible sign pattern that requires $\mathbb{H}_n$ exists for $n$ sufficiently large, possibly $n\ge 8$. However, for each $n \geq 4$, we identify three $n\times n$ irreducible sign patterns that require $\mathbb{H}_n$, which resolves this conjecture.

Codegree conditions for tiling complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs and loose cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs) $F$ and $H$, a perfect $F$-tiling (or an $F$-factor) in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together cover the vertex set of $H$. For all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $K$, Mycroft proved a minimum codegree condition that guarantees a $K$-factor in an $n$-vertex $k$-graph, which is tight up to an error term $o(n)$. In this paper we improve the error term in Mycroft's result to a sub-linear term that relates to the Turán number of $K$ when the differences of the sizes of the vertex classes of $K$ are co-prime. Furthermore, we find a construction which shows that our improved codegree condition is asymptotically tight in infinitely many cases thus disproving a conjecture of Mycroft. At last, we determine exact minimum codegree conditions for tiling $K^{(k)}(1, \dots, 1, 2)$ and tiling loose cycles thus generalizing results of Czygrinow, DeBiasio, and Nagle, and of Czygrinow, respectively.
Bounds of Zagreb indices and hyper Zagreb indices
The hyper Zagreb index is a kind of extensions of Zagreb index, used for predicting physicochemical properties of organic compounds. Given a graph $G= (V(G), E(G))$, the first hyper-Zagreb index is the sum of the square of edge degree over edge set $E(G)$ and defined as $HM_1(G)=\sum_{e=uv\in E(G)}d(e)^2$, where $d(e)=d(u)+d(v)$ is the edge degree. In this work we define the second hyper-Zagreb index on the adjacent edges as $HM_2(G)=\sum_{e\sim f}d(e)d(f)$, where $e\sim f$ represents the adjacent edges of $G$. By inequalities, we explore some upper and lower bounds of these hyper-Zagreb indices, and provide the relation between Zagreb indices and hyper Zagreb indices.
On the distance spectra of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

Minimum codegree threshold for $C_6^3$-factors in $3$-uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $C_6^3$ be the 3-uniform hypergraph on $\{1,\dots, 6\}$ with edges $123, 345,561$, which can be seen as the triangle in 3-uniform hypergraphs. For sufficiently large $n$ divisible by 6, we show that every $n$-vertex 3-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $n/3$ contains a $C_6^3$-factor, i.e., a spanning subhypergraph consisting of vertex-disjoint copies of $C_6^3$. The minimum codegree condition is best possible. This improves the asymptotical result obtained by Mycroft and answers a question of Rödl and Ruciński exactly.
Sign patterns with minimum rank 3 and point-line configurations
A \emph{sign pattern (matrix)} is a matrix whose entries are from the set $\{+, -, 0\}$. The \emph{minimum rank} (respectively, \emph{rational minimum rank}) of a sign pattern matrix $\cal A$ is the minimum of the ranks of the real (respectively, rational) matrices whose entries have signs equal to the corresponding entries of $\cal A$. A sign pattern $\cal A$ is said to be \emph{condensed} if $\cal A$ has no zero row or column and no two rows or columns are identical or negatives of each other. In this paper, a new direct connection between condensed $m \times n $ sign patterns with minimum rank $r$ and $m$ point--$n$ hyperplane configurations in ${\mathbb R}^{r-1}$ is established. In particular, condensed sign patterns with minimum rank 3 are closed related to point--line configurations on the plane. It is proved that for any sign pattern $\cal A$ with minimum rank $r\geq 3$, if the number of zero entries on each column of $\cal A$ is at most $r-1$, then the rational minimum rank of $\cal A$ is also $r$. Furthermore, we construct the smallest known sign pattern whose minimum rank is 3 but whose rational minimum rank is greater than 3.
