A New Lower Bound for van der Waerden Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove a new recurrence relation on the van der Waerden numbers, $w(r,k)$. In particular, if $p$ is a prime and $p\leq k$ then $w(r, k) > p \cdot \left(w\left(r - \left\lceil \frac{r}{p}\right\rceil, k\right) -1\right)$. This recurrence gives the lower bound $w(r, p+1) > p^{r-1}2^p$ when $r \leq p$, which generalizes Berlekamp's theorem on 2-colorings, and gives the best known bound for a large interval of $r$. The recurrence can also be used to construct explicit valid colorings, and it improves known lower bounds on small van der Waerden numbers.
A forest building process on simple graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the following process on a simple graph without isolated vertices: Order the edges randomly and keep an edge if and only if it contains a vertex which is not contained in some preceding edge. The resulting set of edges forms a spanning forest of the graph. The probability of obtaining $k$ components in this process for complete bipartite graphs is determined as well as a formula for the expected number of components in any graph. A generic recurrence and some additional basic properties are discussed.
On the distance spectra of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

Juggling card sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Juggling patterns can be described by a sequence of cards which keep track of the relative order of the balls at each step. This interpretation has many algebraic and combinatorial properties, with connections to Stirling numbers, Dyck paths, Narayana numbers, boson normal ordering, arc-labeled digraphs, and more. Some of these connections are investigated with a particular focus on enumerating juggling patterns satisfying certain ordering constraints, including where the number of crossings is fixed.
An Anti-Ramsey Problem Concerning Complete Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider quadruples of positive integers $(a,b,m,n)$ with $a\leq b$ and $m\leq n$ such that any proper edge-coloring of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ contains a rainbow $K_{a,b}$ subgraph. We show that any such quadruple with $a\leq m$ and $n>(a^2-a+1)(b-1)$ satisfies this property. We also show that the quadruple $(2,3,3,6)$ satisfies this property. We end with a conjecture.
Cospectral regular graphs with and without a perfect matching
For each $b \geq 5$ we construct a pair of cospectral $b$-regular graphs, where one has a perfect matching and the other one not. This solves a research problem posed by the third author at the 22nd British Combinatorial Conference.
