Combinatorial properties of the enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
The enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence (epr-sequence) of a symmetric matrix $B \in \mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ is defined as $\ell_1 \ell_2 \cdots \ell_n$, where $\ell_j \in \{\tt{A}, \tt{S}, \tt{N}\}$ according to whether all, some but not all, or none of the principal minors of order $j$ of $B$ are nonzero. Building upon the second author's recent classification of the epr-sequences of symmetric matrices over the field $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_2$, we initiate a study of the case $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_3$. Moreover, epr-sequences over finite fields are shown to have connections to Ramsey theory and coding theory.

On 0--1 matrices whose inverses have entries of the same modulus
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture of Barrett, Butler and Hall may be stated as follows: If $n \geq 3$ and $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ (the family of $n \times n$ 0--1 matrices) is a nonsingular symmetric matrix, then the following two statements are equivalent: (a) All of the principal minors of $A$ of order $n-2$ are zero; and (b) $A^{-1}$ is a matrix all of whose entries have the same modulus and all of whose diagonal entries are equal. We show that this conjecture holds if $A$ does not have both a zero and a nonzero principal minor of order $n-4$ (if $n \geq 5$). The parity of the principal minors of nonsingular symmetric matrices $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ whose principal minors of order $n-2$ are all zero is explored, establishing, in particular, that the determinants of such matrices are all even. For an arbitrary (not necessarily symmetric) nonsingular matrix $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ with $n\geq 3$, we establish necessary conditions for $A^{-1}$ to be a matrix all of whose entries have the same modulus; examples of such conditions are the following: each row and column of $A$ has an even number of nonzero entries; each entry of $A^{-1}$ is the reciprocal of an even integer; $\det(A)$ is even; the difference between any two rows of $A$, as well as the difference between any two columns of $A$, has an even number of nonzero entries; if $A$ is symmetric, then $A$ has an even number of nonzero diagonal entries; if $A$ is symmetric and $\vec{a}_k$ is the $k$th column of $A$, then $A-\vec{a}_k\vec{a}_k^T$ has an even number of nonzero diagonal entries.

On the almost-principal minors of a symmetric matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
The almost-principal rank characteristic sequence (apr-sequence) of an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix is introduced, which is defined to be the string $a_1 a_2 \cdots a_{n-1}$, where $a_k$ is either $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$, according as all, some but not all, or none of its almost-principal minors of order $k$ are nonzero. In contrast to the other principal rank characteristic sequences in the literature, the apr-sequence of a matrix does not depend on principal minors. The almost-principal rank of a symmetric matrix $B$, denoted by ${\rm aprank}(B)$, is defined as the size of a largest nonsingular almost-principal submatrix of $B$. A complete characterization of the sequences not containing an $\tt A$ that can be realized as the apr-sequence of a symmetric matrix over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is provided. A necessary condition for a sequence to be the apr-sequence of a symmetric matrix over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is presented. It is shown that if $B \in \mathbb{F}^{n\times n}$ is symmetric and non-diagonal, then ${\rm rank}(B)-1 \leq {\rm aprank}(B) \leq {\rm rank}(B)$, with both bounds being sharp. Moreover, it is shown that if $B$ is symmetric, non-diagonal and singular, and does not contain a zero row, then ${\rm rank}(B) = {\rm aprank}(B)$.

The quasi principal rank characteristic sequence
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 548 (2018), 42--56 • View PublicationBIB
A minor of a matrix is quasi-principal if it is a principal or an almost-principal minor. The quasi principal rank characteristic sequence (qpr-sequence) of an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix is introduced, which is defined as $q_1 q_2 \cdots q_n$, where $q_k$ is $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$, according as all, some but not all, or none of its quasi-principal minors of order $k$ are nonzero. This sequence extends the principal rank characteristic sequences in the literature, which only depend on the principal minors of the matrix. A necessary condition for the attainability of a qpr-sequence is established. Using probabilistic techniques, a complete characterization of the qpr-sequences that are attainable by symmetric matrices over fields of characteristic $0$ is given.
Spectral Bounds for the Connectivity of Regular Graphs with Given Order
Published • View PublicationBIB
The second-largest eigenvalue and second-smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph are measures of its connectivity. These eigenvalues can be used to analyze the robustness, resilience, and synchronizability of networks, and are related to connectivity attributes such as the vertex- and edge-connectivity, isoperimetric number, and characteristic path length. In this paper, we present two upper bounds for the second-largest eigenvalues of regular graphs and multigraphs of a given order which guarantee a desired vertex- or edge-connectivity. The given bounds are in terms of the order and degree of the graphs, and hold with equality for infinite families of graphs. These results answer a question of Mohar.

The signed enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
The signed enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence (sepr-sequence) of an $n \times n$ Hermitian matrix is the sequence $t_1t_2 \cdots t_n$, where $t_k$ is either $\tt A^*$, $\tt A^+$, $\tt A^-$, $\tt N$, $\tt S^*$, $\tt S^+$, or $\tt S^-$ based on the following criteria: $t_k = \tt A^*$ if $B$ has both a positive and a negative order-$k$ principal minor, and each order-$k$ principal minor is nonzero. $t_k = \tt A^+$ (respectively, $t_k = \tt A^-$) if each order-$k$ principal minor is positive (respectively, negative). $t_k = \tt N$ if each order-$k$ principal minor is zero. $t_k = \tt S^*$ if $B$ has each a positive, a negative, and a zero order-$k$ principal minor. $t_k = \tt S^+$ (respectively, $t_k = \tt S^-$) if $B$ has both a zero and a nonzero order-$k$ principal minor, and each nonzero order-$k$ principal minor is positive (respectively, negative). Such sequences provide more information than the $({\tt A,N,S})$ epr-sequence in the literature, where the $k$th term is either $\tt A$, $\tt N$, or $\tt S$ based on whether all, none, or some (but not all) of the order-$k$ principal minors of the matrix are nonzero. Various sepr-sequences are shown to be unattainable by Hermitian matrices. In particular, by applying Muir's law of extensible minors, it is shown that subsequences such as $\tt A^*N$ and $\tt NA^*$ are prohibited in the sepr-sequence of a Hermitian matrix. For Hermitian matrices of orders $n=1,2,3$, all attainable sepr-sequences are classified. For real symmetric matrices, a complete characterization of the attainable sepr-sequences whose underlying epr-sequence contains $\tt ANA$ as a non-terminal subsequence is established.
On the Wiener index, distance cospectrality and transmission regular graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 230 (2017), 1-10 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate various algebraic and graph theoretic properties of the distance matrix of a graph. Two graphs are $D$-cospectral if their distance matrices have the same spectrum. We construct infinite pairs of $D$-cospectral graphs with different diameter and different Wiener index. A graph is $k$-transmission-regular if its distance matrix has constant row sum equal to $k$. We establish tight upper and lower bounds for the row sum of a $k$-transmission-regular graph in terms of the number of vertices of the graph. Finally, we determine the Wiener index and its complexity for linear $k$-trees, and obtain a closed form for the Wiener index of block-clique graphs in terms of the Laplacian eigenvalues of the graph. The latter leads to a generalization of a result for trees which was proved independently by Mohar and Merris.

The enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence over a field of characteristic 2
Published in Electron. J. Linear Algebra 32 (2017), 273--290 • View PublicationBIB
The enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence (epr-sequence) of an $n \times n$ symmetric matrix over a field $\mathbb{F}$ was recently defined as $\ell_1 \ell_2 \cdots \ell_n$, where $\ell_k$ is either $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$ based on whether all, some (but not all), or none of the order-$k$ principal minors of the matrix are nonzero. Here, a complete characterization of the epr-sequences that are attainable by symmetric matrices over the field $\mathbb{Z}_2$, the integers modulo $2$, is established. Contrary to the attainable epr-sequences over a field of characteristic $0$, our characterization reveals that the attainable epr-sequences over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ possess very special structures. For more general fields of characteristic $2$, some restrictions on attainable epr-sequences are obtained.

Classification of families of pr- and epr-sequences
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra 65(8) (2017), 1581--1599 • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes new restrictions for attainable enhanced principal rank characteristic sequences (epr-sequences). These results are then used to classify two related families of sequences that are attainable by a real symmetric matrix: the family of principal rank characteristic sequences (pr-sequences) not containing three consecutive $1$s and the family of epr-sequences which contain an $\tt{N}$ in every subsequence of length $3$.
