Spreading in graphs
Several concepts that model processes of spreading (of information, disease, objects, etc.) in graphs or networks have been studied. In many contexts, we assume that some vertices of a graph $G$ are contaminated initially, before the process starts. By the $q$-forcing rule, a contaminated vertex having at most $q$ uncontaminated neighbors enforces all the neighbors to become contaminated, while by the $p$-percolation rule, an uncontaminated vertex becomes contaminated if at least $p$ of its neighbors are contaminated. In this paper, we consider sets $S$ that are at the same time $q$-forcing sets and $p$-percolating sets, and call them $(p,q)$-spreading sets. Given positive integers $p$ and $q$, the minimum cardinality of a $(p,q)$-spreading set in $G$ is a $(p,q)$-spreading number, $σ_{(p,q)}(G)$, of $G$. While $q$-forcing sets have been studied in a dozen of papers, the decision version of the corresponding graph invariant has not been considered earlier, and we fill the gap by proving its NP-completeness. This, in turn, enables us to prove the NP-completeness of the decision version of the $(p,q)$-spreading number in graphs for an arbitrary choice of $p$ and $q$. Again, for every $p\in \mathbb{N}$ and $q\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$, we find a linear-time algorithm for determining the $(p,q)$-spreading number of a tree. In addition, we present a lower and an upper bound on the $(p,q)$-spreading number of a tree and characterize extremal families of trees. In the case of square grids, we combine some known results and new results on $(2,1)$-spreading and $(4,q)$-spreading to obtain $σ_{(p,q)}(P_m\Box P_n)$ for all $(p,q)\in (\mathbb{N}\setminus\{3\})\times (\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\})$ and all $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$.

On the average order of a dominating set of a forest
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 346, Issue 1, 2023, 113127 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the average order of a dominating set of a forest graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with no isolated vertices is at most $2n/3$. Moreover, the equality is achieved if and only if every non-leaf vertex of $G$ is a support vertex with one or two leaf neighbors. Our result answers an open question of Beaton and Brown.

Tomescu's graph coloring conjecture for $\ell$-connected graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_G(k)$ be the number of proper $k$-colorings of a finite simple graph $G$. Tomescu's conjecture, which was recently solved by Fox, He, and Manners, states that $P_G(k) \le k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ for all connected graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with chromatic number $k\geq 4$. In this paper, we study the same problem with the additional constraint that $G$ is $\ell$-connected. For $2$-connected graphs $G$, we prove a tight bound \[ P_G(k) \le (k-1)!((k-1)^{n-k+1} + (-1)^{n-k}), \] and show that equality is only achieved if $G$ is a $k$-clique with an ear attached. For $\ell \ge 3$, we prove an asymptotically tight upper bound \[ P_G(k) \le k!(k-1)^{n-\ell - k + 1} + O((k-2)^n), \] and provide a matching lower bound construction. For the ranges $k \geq \ell$ or $\ell \geq (k-2)(k-1)+1$ we further find the unique graph maximizing $P_G(k)$. We also consider generalizing $\ell$-connected graphs to connected graphs with minimum degree $δ$.

Uniform Length Dominating Sequence Graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2020) 36:1819-1825 • View PublicationBIB
A sequence of vertices $(v_1,\, \dots , \,v_k)$ of a graph $G$ is called a {\it dominating closed neighborhood sequence} if $\{v_1,\, \dots , \,v_k\}$ is a dominating set of $G$ and $N[v_i]\nsubseteq \cup _{j=1}^{i-1} N[v_j]$ for every $i$. A graph $G$ is said to be {\it $k-$uniform} if all dominating closed neighborhood sequences have equal length $k$. Bre{\v s}ar et al. (2014) characterized $k$-uniform graphs with $k\leq 3$. In this article we extend their work by giving a complete characterization of all $k$-uniform graphs with $k\geq 4$.
Characterization and enumeration of 3-regular permutation graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation graph is a graph that can be derived from a permutation, where the vertices correspond to letters of the permutation, and the edges represent inversions. We provide a construction to show that there are infinitely many connected $r$-regular permutation graphs for $r \geq 3$. We prove that all $3$-regular permutation graphs arise from a similar construction. Finally, we enumerate all $3$-regular permutation graphs on $n$ vertices.

A note on the real part of complex chromatic roots
Published in Discrete Mathematics 328 (2014), 96-101 • Search Publication
A {\em chromatic root} is a root of the chromatic polynomial of a graph. While the real chromatic roots have been extensively studied and well understood, little is known about the {\em real parts} of chromatic roots. It is not difficult to see that the largest real chromatic root of a graph with $n$ vertices is $n-1$, and indeed, it is known that the largest real chromatic root of a graph is at most the tree-width of the graph. Analogous to these facts, it was conjectured in [8] that the real parts of chromatic roots are also bounded above by both $n-1$ and the tree-width of the graph. In this article we show that for all $k\geq 2$ there exist infinitely many graphs $G$ with tree-width $k$ such that $G$ has non-real chromatic roots $z$ with $\Re(z)>k$. We also discuss the weaker conjecture and prove it for graphs $G$ with $χ(G)\geq n-3$.

On the real roots of $σ$-Polynomials
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, 32(5) (2016), 1723-1730 • View PublicationBIB
The $σ$-polynomial is given by $σ(G,x) = \sum_{i=χ(G)}^{n} a_{i}(G)\, x^{i}$, where $a_{i}(G)$ is the number of partitions of the vertices of $G$ into $i$ nonempty independent sets. These polynomials are closely related to chromatic polynomials, as the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is given by $\sum_{i=χ(G)}^{n} a_{i}(G)\, x(x-1) \cdots (x-(i-1))$. It is known that the closure of the real roots of chromatic polynomials is precisely $\{0,~1\} \bigcup [32/27,\infty)$, with $(-\infty,0)$, $(0,1)$ and $(1,32/27)$ being maximal zero-free intervals for roots of chromatic polynomials. We ask here whether such maximal zero-free intervals exist for $σ$-polynomials, and show that the only such interval is $[0,\infty)$ -- that is, the closure of the real roots of $σ$-polynomials is $(-\infty,0]$.

Restraints Permitting the Largest Number of Colourings
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 222 (2017), 76-88 • View PublicationBIB
A \textit{restraint} $r$ on $G$ is a function which assigns each vertex $v$ of $G$ a finite set of forbidden colours $r(v)$. A proper colouring $c$ of $G$ is said to be \textit{permitted by the restraint r} if $c(v)\notin r(v)$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$. A restraint $r$ on a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices is called a \textit{$k$-restraint} if $|r(v)|=k$ and $r(v) \subseteq \{1,2,\dots ,kn\}$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$. In this article we discuss the following problem: among all $k$-restraints $r$ on $G$, which restraints permit the largest number of $x$-colourings for all large enough $x$? We determine such extremal restraints for all bipartite graphs.

New Bounds for Chromatic Polynomials and Chromatic Roots
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 338(11) (2015), 1938-1946 • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a $k$-chromatic graph of order $n$ then it is known that the chromatic polynomial of $G$, $π(G,x)$, is at most $x(x-1)\cdots (x-(k-1))x^{n-k} = (x)_{\downarrow k}x^{n-k}$ for every $x\in \mathbb{N}$. We improve here this bound by showing that \[ π(G,x) \leq (x)_{\downarrow k} (x-1)^{Δ(G)-k+1} x^{n-1-Δ(G)}\] for every $x\in \mathbb{N},$ where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. Secondly, we show that if $G$ is a connected $k$-chromatic graph of order $n$ where $k\geq 4$ then $π(G,x)$ is at most $(x)_{\downarrow k}(x-1)^{n-k}$ for every real $x\geq n-2+\left( {n \choose 2} -{k \choose 2}-n+k \right)^2$ (it had been previously conjectured that this inequality holds for all $x \geq k$). Finally, we provide an upper bound on the moduli of the chromatic roots that is an improvment over known bounds for dense graphs.

Extremal Restraints for Graph Colourings
Published in J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 93 (2015), pp. 297-304 • Search Publication
A {\em restraint} on a (finite undirected) graph $G = (V,E)$ is a function $r$ on $V$ such that $r(v)$ is a finite subset of ${\mathbb N}$; a proper vertex colouring $c$ of $G$ is {\em permitted} by $r$ if $c(v) \not\in r(v)$ for all vertices $v$ of $G$ (we think of $r(v)$ as the set of colours {\em forbidden} at $v$). Given a large number of colors, for restraints $r$ with exactly one colour forbidden at each vertex the smallest number of colorings is permitted when $r$ is a constant function, but the problem of what restraints permit the largest number of colourings is more difficult. We determine such extremal restraints for complete graphs and trees.

On the maximum number of colorings of a graph
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol 9, No. 3 (2018), pp. 489-497 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_k(n)$ be the family of all connected $k$-chromatic graphs of order $n$. Given a natural number $x\geq k$, we consider the problem of finding the maximum number of $x$-colorings among graphs in $\mathcal{C}_k(n)$. When $k\leq 3$ the answer to this problem is known, and when $k\geq 4$ the problem is wide open. For $k\geq 4$ it was conjectured that the maximum number of $x$-colorings is $x(x-1)\cdots (x-k+1)\,x^{n-k}$. In this article, we prove this conjecture under the additional condition that the independence number of the graphs is at most $2$.

Maximizing the number of $x$-colorings of $4$-chromatic graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 341(5) (2018), 1419-1431 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_4(n)$ be the family of all connected $4$-chromatic graphs of order $n$. Given an integer $x\geq 4$, we consider the problem of finding the maximum number of $x$-colorings of a graph in $\mathcal{C}_4(n)$. It was conjectured that the maximum number of $x$-colorings is equal to $(x)_{\downarrow 4}(x-1)^{n-4}$ and the extremal graphs are those which have clique number $4$ and size $n+2$. In this article, we reduce this problem to a \textit{finite} family of graphs. We show that there exist a finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of connected $4$-chromatic graphs such that if the number of $x$-colorings of every graph $G$ in $\mathcal{F}$ is less than $(x)_{\downarrow 4}(x-1)^{|V(G)|-4}$ then the conjecture holds to be true.
On the Wiener index, distance cospectrality and transmission regular graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 230 (2017), 1-10 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate various algebraic and graph theoretic properties of the distance matrix of a graph. Two graphs are $D$-cospectral if their distance matrices have the same spectrum. We construct infinite pairs of $D$-cospectral graphs with different diameter and different Wiener index. A graph is $k$-transmission-regular if its distance matrix has constant row sum equal to $k$. We establish tight upper and lower bounds for the row sum of a $k$-transmission-regular graph in terms of the number of vertices of the graph. Finally, we determine the Wiener index and its complexity for linear $k$-trees, and obtain a closed form for the Wiener index of block-clique graphs in terms of the Laplacian eigenvalues of the graph. The latter leads to a generalization of a result for trees which was proved independently by Mohar and Merris.

On the roots of $σ$-polynomials
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 82(1) (2016), 90-102 • Search Publication
Given a graph $G$ of order $n$, the $σ$-$polynomial$ of $G$ is the generating function $σ(G,x) = \sum a_{i}x^{i}$ where $a_{i}$ is the number of partitions of the vertex set of $G$ into $i$ nonempty independent sets. Such polynomials arise in a natural way from chromatic polynomials. Brenti [1] proved that $σ$-polynomials of graphs with chromatic number at least $n-2$ had all real roots, and conjectured the same held for chromatic number $n-3$. We affirm this conjecture.
