Circular chromatic number of signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A signed graph is a pair $(G, σ)$, where $G$ is a graph and $σ: E(G) \to \{+, -\}$ is a signature which assigns to each edge of $G$ a sign. Various notions of coloring of signed graphs have been studied. In this paper, we extend circular coloring of graphs to signed graphs. Given a signed graph $(G, σ)$ a circular $r$-coloring of $(G, σ)$ is an assignment $ψ$ of points of a circle of circumference $r$ to the vertices of $G$ such that for every edge $e=uv$ of $G$, if $σ(e)=+$, then $ψ(u)$ and $ψ(v)$ have distance at least $1$, and if $σ(e)=-$, then $ψ(v)$ and the antipodal of $ψ(u)$ have distance at least $1$. The circular chromatic number $χ_c(G, σ)$ of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is the infimum of those $r$ for which $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-coloring. For a graph $G$, we define the signed circular chromatic number of $G$ to be $\max\{χ_c(G, σ): σ\text{ is a signature of $G$}\}$. We study basic properties of circular coloring of signed graphs and develop tools for calculating $χ_c(G, σ)$. We explore the relation between the circular chromatic number and the signed circular chromatic number of graphs, and present bounds for the signed circular chromatic number of some families of graphs. In particular, we determine the supremum of the signed circular chromatic number of $k$-chromatic graphs of large girth, of simple bipartite planar graphs, $d$-degenerate graphs, simple outerplanar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We construct a signed planar simple graph whose circular chromatic number is $4+\frac{2}{3}$. This is based and improves on a signed graph built by Kardos and Narboni as a counterexample to a conjecture of Máčajová, Raspaud, and Škoviera.
Decomposing planar graphs into graphs with degree restrictions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, a decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edges. A graph is $(d, h)$-decomposable if its edge set can be partitioned into a $d$-degenerate graph and a graph with maximum degree at most $h$. For $d \le 4$, we are interested in the minimum integer $h_d$ such that every planar graph is $(d,h_d)$-decomposable. It was known that $h_3 \le 4$, $h_2\le 8$, and $h_1 = \infty$. This paper proves that $h_4=1, h_3=2$, and $4 \le h_2 \le 6$.

Multiple list colouring of $3$-choice critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is called $3$-choice critical if $G$ is not $2$-choosable but any proper subgraph is $2$-choosable. A characterization of $3$-choice critical graphs was given by Voigt in [On list Colourings and Choosability of Graphs, Habilitationsschrift, Tu Ilmenau(1998)]. Voigt conjectured that if $G$ is a bipartite $3$-choice critical graph, then $G$ is $(4m, 2m)$-choosable for every integer $m$. This conjecture was disproved by Meng, Puleo and Zhu in [On (4, 2)-Choosable Graphs, Journal of Graph Theory 85(2):412-428(2017)]. They showed that if $G=Θ_{r,s,t}$ where $r,s,t$ have the same parity and $\min\{r,s,t\} \ge 3$, or $G=Θ_{2,2,2,2p}$ with $p \ge 2$, then $G$ is bipartite $3$-choice critical, but not $(4,2)$-choosable. On the other hand, all the other bipartite 3-choice critical graphs are $(4,2)$-choosable. This paper strengthens the result of Meng, Puleo and Zhu and shows that all the other bipartite $3$-choice critical graphs are $(4m,2m)$-choosable for every integer $m$.

Relatively small counterexamples to Hedetniemi's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hedetniemi conjectured in 1966 that $χ(G \times H) = \min\{χ(G), χ(H)\}$ for all graphs $G$ and $H$. Here $G\times H$ is the graph with vertex set $ V(G)\times V(H)$ defined by putting $(x,y)$ and $(x',y')$ adjacent if and only if $xx'\in E(G)$ and $yy'\in E(H)$. This conjecture received a lot of attention in the past half century. Recently, Shitov refuted this conjecture. Let $p$ be the minimum number of vertices in a graph of odd girth $7$ and fractional chromatic number greater than $3+4/(p-1)$. Shitov's proof shows that Hedetniemi's conjecture fails for some graphs with chromatic number about $p^22^{p+1} $ and with about $(p^22^{p+1})^{p^32^{p-1}} $ vertices. In this paper, we show that the conjecture fails already for some graphs $G$ and $H$ with chromatic number $3\lceil \frac {p+1}2 \rceil $ and with $p \lceil (p-1)/2 \rceil$ and $3 \lceil \frac {p+1}2 \rceil (p+1)-p$ vertices, respectively. The currently known upper bound for $p$ is $148$. Thus Hedetniemi's conjecture fails for some graphs $G$ and $H$ with chromatic number $225$, and with $10,952$ and $33,377$ vertices, respectively.
Clustering powers of sparse graphs
We prove that if $G$ is a sparse graph --- it belongs to a fixed class of bounded expansion $\mathcal{C}$ --- and $d\in \mathbb{N}$ is fixed, then the $d$th power of $G$ can be partitioned into cliques so that contracting each of these clique to a single vertex again yields a sparse graph. This result has several graph-theoretic and algorithmic consequences for powers of sparse graphs, including bounds on their subchromatic number and efficient approximation algorithms for the chromatic number and the clique number.

A graph $G$ is $d$-degenerate if every non-null subgraph of $G$ has a vertex of degree at most $d$. We prove that every $n$-vertex planar graph has a $3$-degenerate induced subgraph of order at least $3n/4$.

On Hedetniemi's conjecture and the Poljak-Rodl function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hedetniemi conjectured in 1966 that $χ(G \times H) = \min\{χ(G), χ(H)\}$ for any graphs G and H. Here $G\times H$ is the graph with vertex set $ V(G)\times V(H)$ defined by putting $(x,y)$ and $(x',y')$ adjacent if and only if $xx'\in E(G)$ and $yy'\in V(H)$. This conjecture received a lot of attention in the past half century. It was disproved recently by Shitov. The Poljak-Rödl function is defined as $f(n) = \min\{χ(G \times H): χ(G)=χ(H)=n\}$. Hedetniemi's conjecture is equivalent to saying $f(n)=n$ for all integer $n$. Shitov's result shows that $f(n)<n$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. Using Shitov's result, Tardif and Zhu showed that $f(n) \le n - (\log n)^{1/4}$ for sufficiently large $n$. Using Shitov's method, He--Wigderson showed that for $ε\approx 10^{-9}$ and $n$ sufficiently large, $f(n) \le (1-ε)n$. In this note we prove that a slight modification of the proof in the paper of Zhu and Tardif shows that $f(n) \le (\frac 12 + o(1))n$ for sufficiently large $n$. On the other hand, it is unknown whether $f(n)$ is bounded by a constant. However, we do know that if $f(n)$ is bounded by a constant, then the smallest such constant is at most $9$. This lecture note gives self-contained proofs of the above mentioned results.

Strong fractional choice number of series-parallel graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The strong fractional choice number of a graph $G$ is the infimum of those real numbers $r$ such that $G$ is $(\lceil rm \rceil, m)$-choosable for every positive integer $m$. The strong fractional choice number of a family ${\cal G}$ of graphs is the supremum of the strong fractional choice number of graphs in ${\cal G}$. We denote by ${\cal{Q}}_k$ the class of series-parallel graphs with girth at least $k$. This paper proves that for $k=4q-1, 4q,4q+1, 4q+2$, the strong fractional number of ${\cal{Q}}_k$ is exactly $2+ \frac{1}{q}$.

List colouring triangle free planar graphs

This paper proves the following result: Assume $G$ is a triangle free planar graph, $X$ is an independent set of $G$. If $L$ is a list assignment of $G$ such that $\mid L(v)\mid = 4$ for each vertex $v \in V(G)-X$ and $\mid L(v)\mid = 3$ for each vertex $v \in X$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable.

Chromatic $λ$-choosable and $λ$-paintable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $φ(k)$ be the minimum number of vertices in a non-$k$-choosable $k$-chromatic graph. The Ohba conjecture, confirmed by Noel, Reed and Wu, asserts that $φ(k) \ge 2k+2$. This bound is tight if $k$ is even. If $k$ is odd, then it is known that $φ(k) \le 2k+3$ and it is conjectured by Noel that $φ(k) = 2k+3$. For a multi-set $λ=\{k_1,k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ of positive integers, let $k_λ = \sum_{i=1}^q k_i$. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k_λ$-list assignment $L$ for which the colour set $\cup_{v \in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into the disjoint union $C_1 \cup C_2 \cup \ldots \cup C_q$ of $q$ sets so that for each $i$ and each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if $G$ is $L$-colourable for any $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$. Let $φ(λ)$ be the minimum number of vertices in a non-$λ$-choosable $k_λ$-chromatic graph. Let $1_λ$ be the multiplicity of $1$ in $λ$, and let $o_λ$ be the number of elements in $λ$ that are odd integers. We prove that if $1_λ \ne k_λ$, then $2k_λ+1_λ+2 \leqslant φ(λ) \leqslant 2k_λ+ o_λ+2$. In particular, if $1_λ=o_λ=t$, i.e. $λ$ contains no odd integer greater than $1$, then $φ(λ) = 2k_λ+t+2$. We also prove that $φ(λ) \leqslant 2k_λ+5 1_λ+3$. In particular, if $1_λ=0$, then $2k_λ+2 \leqslant φ(λ) \leqslant 2k_λ+3$.

A note about online nonrepetitive coloring $k$-trees

We prove that it is always possible to color online nonrepetitively any (partial) $k$-tree (that is, graphs with tree-width at most $k$) with $4^k$ colors. This implies that it is always possible to color online nonrepetitively cycles, trees and series-parallel graphs with $16$ colors. Our results generalize the respective (offline) nonrepetitive coloring results.
A Connected Version of the Graph Coloring Game
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, Elsevier • View PublicationBIB
The graph coloring game is a two-player game in which, given a graph G and a set of k colors, the two players, Alice and Bob, take turns coloring properly an uncolored vertex of G, Alice having the first move. Alice wins the game if and only if all the vertices of G are eventually colored. The game chromatic number of a graph G is then defined as the smallest integer k for which Alice has a winning strategy when playing the graph coloring game on G with k colors. In this paper, we introduce and study a new version of the graph coloring game by requiring that, after each player's turn, the subgraph induced by the set of colored vertices is connected. The connected game chromatic number of a graph G is then the smallest integer k for which Alice has a winning strategy when playing the connected graph coloring game on G with k colors. We prove that the connected game chromatic number of every outerplanar graph is at most 5 and that there exist outerplanar graphs with connected game chromatic number 4. Moreover, we prove that for every integer k $\ge$ 3, there exist bipartite graphs on which Bob wins the connected coloring game with k colors, while Alice wins the connected coloring game with two colors on every bipartite graph.

The Alon-Tarsi number of subgraphs of a planar graph
This paper constructs a planar graph $G_1$ such that for any subgraph $H$ of $G_1$ with maximum degree $Δ(H) \le 3$, $G_1-E(H)$ is not $3$-choosable, and a planar graph $G_2$ such that for any star forest $F$ in $G_2$, $G_2-E(F)$ contains a copy of $K_4$ and hence $G_2-E(F)$ is not $3$-colourable. On the other hand, we prove that every planar graph $G$ contains a forest $F$ such that the Alon-Tarsi number of $G - E(F)$ is at most $3$, and hence $G - E(F)$ is 3-paintable and 3-choosable.

The Alon-Tarsi number of a planar graph minus a matching
This paper proves that every planar graph $G$ contains a matching $M$ such that the Alon-Tarsi number of $G-M$ is at most $4$. As a consequence, $G-M$ is $4$-paintable, and hence $G$ itself is $1$-defective $4$-paintable. This improves a result of Cushing and Kierstead [Planar Graphs are 1-relaxed, 4-choosable, {\em European Journal of Combinatorics} 31(2010),1385-1397], who proved that every planar graph is $1$-defective $4$-choosable.

Colouring of generalized signed planar graphs
Assume $G$ is a graph. We view $G$ as a symmetric digraph, in which each edge $uv$ of $G$ is replaced by a pair of opposite arcs $e=(u,v)$ and $e^{-1}=(v,u)$. Assume $S$ is an inverse closed subset of permutations of positive integers. We say $G$ is $S$-$k$-colourable if for any mapping $σ: E(G) \to S$ with $σ(x,y) = (σ(y,x))^{-1}$, there is a mapping $f: V(G) \to [k]=\{1,2, \ldots, k\}$ such that for each arc $e=(x,y)$, $σ_e(f(x)) \ne f(y)$. The concept of $S$-$k$-colouring is a common generalization of many colouring concepts, including $k$-colouring, signed $k$-colouring defined by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera, signed $k$-colouring defined by Kang and Steffen, correspondence $k$-colouring defined by Dvořák and Postle, and group colouring defined by Jaeger, Linial, Payan and Tarsi. We are interested in the problem as for which subset $S$ of $S_4$, every planar graph is $S$-colourable. Such a subset $S$ is called good. The famous four colour theorem is equivalent to say that $S=\{id\}$ is good. There are two conjectures on signed graph colouring, one is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)(34)\}$ be good and the other is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)\}$ be good. We say two subsets $S$ and $S'$ of $S_k$ are conjugate if there is a permutation $π\in S_k$ such that $S'= \{πσπ^{-1}: σ\in S\}$. This paper proves that if $S$ is a good subset of $S_4$ containing $id$, then $S$ is conjugate to a subset of $\{id, (12), (34), (12)(34)\}$. However, it remains an open problem if there is any good subset $S$ which contains $id$ and has cardinality $|S| \ge 2$. We also prove that $S=\{(12),(13),(23),(123),(132)\}$ is not good.

A refinement of choosability of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assume $k$ is a positive integer, $λ=\{k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k$ and $G$ is a graph. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\cup_{v\in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $q$ subsets $C_1 \cup C_2 \ldots \cup C_q$ and for each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if for each $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, $G$ is $L$-colourable. It follows from the definition that if $λ=\{k\}$, then $λ$-choosable is the same as $k$-choosable, if $λ=\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$, then $λ$-choosable is equivalent to $k$-colourable. For the other partitions of $k$ sandwiched between $\{k\}$ and $\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$ in terms of refinements, $λ$-choosability reveals a complex hierarchy of colourability of graphs. We prove that for two partitions $λ, λ'$ of $k$, every $λ$-choosable graph is $λ'$-choosable if and only if $λ'$ is a refinement of $λ$. Then we concentrate on $λ$-choosability of planar graphs for partitions $λ$ of $4$. Several conjectures concerning colouring of generalized signed planar graphs are proposed and relations between these conjectures and list colouring conjectures for planar graphs are explored. In particular, it is proved that a conjecture of Kündgen and Ramamurthi on list colouring of planar graphs is implied by the conjecture that every planar graph is $\{2,2\}$-choosable, and also implied by the conjecture of Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera which asserts that every planar graph is signed MRS-$4$-colourable, and that a conjecture of Kang and Steffen asserting that every planar graph is signed KS-$4$-colourable implies that every planar graph is $\{1,1,2\}$-choosable.
