The skew-rank of oriented graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An oriented graph $G^σ$ is a digraph without loops and multiple arcs, where $G$ is called the underlying graph of $G^σ$. Let $S(G^σ)$ denote the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$. The rank of the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$ is called the {\it skew-rank} of $G^σ$, denoted by $sr(G^σ)$. The skew-adjacency matrix of an oriented graph is skew symmetric and the skew-rank is even. In this paper we consider the skew-rank of simple oriented graphs. Firstly we give some preliminary results about the skew-rank. Secondly we characterize the oriented graphs with skew-rank 2 and characterize the oriented graphs with pendant vertices which attain the skew-rank 4. As a consequence, we list the oriented unicyclic graphs, the oriented bicyclic graphs with pendant vertices which attain the skew-rank 4. Moreover, we determine the skew-rank of oriented unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with girth $k$ in terms of matching number. We investigate the minimum value of the skew-rank among oriented unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with girth $k$ and characterize oriented unicyclic graphs attaining the minimum value. In addition, we consider oriented unicyclic graphs whose skew-adjacency matrices are nonsingular.

On maximum Estrada indices of bipartite graphs with some given parameters
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Estrada index of a graph $G$ is defined as $EE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,$ $ λ_2,\ldots, λ_n$ are the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the unique bipartite graph with maximum Estrada index among bipartite graphs with given matching number and given vertex-connectivity, edge-connectivity, respectively.

Randić energy and Randić eigenvalues
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, and $d_i$ the degree of a vertex $v_i$ of $G$. The Randić matrix ${\bf R}=(r_{ij})$ of $G$ is defined by $r_{ij} = 1 / \sqrt{d_jd_j}$ if the vertices $v_i$ and $v_j$ are adjacent in $G$ and $r_{ij}=0$ otherwise. The normalized signless Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{Q}$ is defined as $\mathcal{Q} =I+\bf{R}$, where $I$ is the identity matrix. The Randić energy is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of $\bf{R}$. In this paper, we find a relation between the normalized signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and the Randić energy of its subdivided graph $S(G)$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to have exactly $k$ and distinct Randić eigenvalues.

Polynomial reconstruction of the matching polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The matching polynomial of a graph is the generating function of the numbers of its matchings with respect to their cardinality. A graph polynomial is polynomial reconstructible, if its value for a graph can be determined from its values for the vertex-deleted subgraphs of the same graph. This note discusses the polynomial reconstructibility of the matching polynomial. We collect previous results, prove it for graphs with pendant edges and disprove it for some graphs.

The 3-rainbow index and connected dominating sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A tree in an edge-colored graph is said to be rainbow if no two edges on the tree share the same color. An edge-coloring of $G$ is called 3-rainbow if for any three vertices in $G$, there exists a rainbow tree connecting them. The 3-rainbow index $rx_3(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the minimum number of colors that are needed in a 3-rainbow coloring of $G$. This concept, introduced by Chartrand et al., can be viewed as a generalization of the rainbow connection. In this paper, we study the 3-rainbow index by using connected three-way dominating sets and 3-dominating sets. We shown that for every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $δ$ ($3\leqδ\leq5$), $rx_{3}(G)\leq \frac{3n}{δ+1}+4$, and the bound is tight up to an additive constant; whereas for every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $δ$ ($δ\geq3$), we get that $rx_{3}(G)\leq n\frac{ln(δ+1)}{δ+1}(1+o_δ(1))+5$. In addition, we obtain some tight upper bounds of the 3-rainbow index for some special graph classes, including threshold graphs, chain graphs and interval graphs.

Additive codes over $GF(4)$ from circulant graphs
In $2006$, Danielsen and Parker \cite{DP} proved that every self-dual additive code over $GF(4)$ is equivalent to a graph code. So, graph is an important tool for searching (proposed) optimum codes. In this paper, we introduce a new method of searching (proposed) optimum additive codes from circulant graphs.

Formally self-dual linear binary codes from circulant graphs
In 2002, Tonchev first constructed some linear binary codes defined by the adjacency matrices of undirected graphs. So, graph is an important tool for searching optimum codes. In this paper, we introduce a new method of searching (proposed) optimum formally self-dual linear binary codes from circulant graphs.

The generalized 3-edge-connectivity of lexicographic product graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generalized $k$-edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a generalization of the concept of edge-connectivity. The lexicographic product of two graphs $G$ and $H$, denoted by $G\circ H$, is an important graph product. In this paper, we mainly study the generalized 3-edge-connectivity of $G \circ H$, and get upper and lower bounds of $λ_3(G \circ H)$. Moreover, all bounds are sharp.

Non-jumping Numbers for 5-Uniform Hypergraphs
Published in Appl. Math. Comput. 317(2018), 234--251 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ and $r$ be integers. A real number $α\in [0,1)$ is a jump for $r$ if for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and any integer $m,\ m \geq r$, any $r$-uniform graph with $n > n_0(\varepsilon,m)$ vertices and at least α+ \varepsilon)\binom{n}{r}$ edges contains a subgraph with $m$ vertices and at least $(α+c)\binom{m}{r}$ edges, where $c=c(α)$ does not depend on $\varepsilon$ and $m$. It follows from a theorem of Erdős, Stone and Simonovits that every $α\in [0,1)$ is a jump for $r=2$. Erdős asked whether the same is true for $r \geq 3$. However, Frankl and Rödl gave a negative answer by showing that $1-\frac{1}{\ell^{r-1}}$ is not a jump for $r$ if $r \geq 3$ and $\ell >2r$. Peng gave more sequences of non-jumping numbers for $r=4$ and $r\geq 3$. However, there are also a lot of unknowns on determining whether a number is a jump for $r \geq 3$. Following a similar approach as that of Frankl and Rödl, we give several sequences of non-jumping numbers for $r=5$, and extend one of the results to every $r \geq 5$, which generalize the above results.

Characterize graphs with rainbow connection number $m-2$ and $m-3$
A path in an edge-colored graph, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is a rainbow path if no two edges of it are colored the same. A nontrivial connected graph $G$ is rainbow connected if there is a rainbow path connecting any two vertices, and the rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. Chartrand et al. obtained that $G$ is a tree if and only if $rc(G)=m$, and it is easy to see that $G$ is not a tree if and only if $rc(G)\leq m-2$, where $m$ is the number of edge of $G$. So there is an interesting problem: Characterize the graphs $G$ with $rc(G)=m-2$. In this paper, we settle down this problem. Furthermore, we also characterize the graphs $G$ with $rc(G)=m-3$.

Graphs with $4$-rainbow index $3$ and $n-1$
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph with an edge-coloring $c:E(G)\rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,q\},$ $q\in \mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same. A tree $T$ in $G$ is called a $rainbow~tree$ if no two edges of $T$ receive the same color. For a vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$, a tree that connects $S$ in $G$ is called an {\it $S$-tree}. The minimum number of colors that are needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that there is a rainbow $S$-tree for every $k$-set $S$ of $V(G)$ is called the {\it $k$-rainbow index} of $G$, denoted by $rx_k(G)$. Notice that an lower bound and an upper bound of the $k$-rainbow index of a graph with order $n$ is $k-1$ and $n-1$, respectively. Chartrand et al. got that the $k$-rainbow index of a tree with order $n$ is $n-1$ and the $k$-rainbow index of a unicyclic graph with order $n$ is $n-1$ or $n-2$. Li and Sun raised the open problem of characterizing the graphs of order $n$ with $rx_k(G)=n-1$ for $k\geq 3$. In early papers we characterized the graphs of order $n$ with 3-rainbow index 2 and $n-1$. In this paper, we focus on $k=4$, and characterize the graphs of order $n$ with 4-rainbow index 3 and $n-1$, respectively.

A Turán-type problem on distance two
A new turán-type problem on distances on graphs was introduced by Tyomkyn and Uzzell. In this paper, we focus on the case that the distance is two. We primely show that for any value of $n$, a graph on $n$ vertices without three vertices pairwise at distance $2$, if it has a vertex $v \in V(G)$, whose neighbours are covered by at most two cliques, then it has at most $(n^2 - 1)/4 + 1$ pairs of vertices at distance $2$. This partially answers a guess of Tyomkyn and Uzzell [Tyomkyn, M., Uzzell, A.J.: A new Turán-Type promble on distaces of graphs. Graphs Combin. {\bf 29}(6), 1927--1942 (2012)].

On a conjecture about tricyclic graphs with maximal energy
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 72(1)(2014), 183--214 • Search Publication
For a given simple graph $G$, the energy of $G$, denoted by $\mathcal {E}(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix, which was defined by I. Gutman. The problem on determining the maximal energy tends to be complicated for a given class of graphs. There are many approaches on the maximal energy of trees, unicyclic graphs and bicyclic graphs, respectively. Let $P^{6,6,6}_n$ denote the graph with $n\geq 20$ vertices obtained from three copies of $C_6$ and a path $P_{n-18}$ by adding a single edge between each of two copies of $C_6$ to one endpoint of the path and a single edge from the third $C_6$ to the other endpoint of the $P_{n-18}$. Very recently, Aouchiche et al. [M. Aouchiche, G. Caporossi, P. Hansen, Open problems on graph eigenvalues studied with AutoGraphiX, {\it Europ. J. Comput. Optim.} {\bf 1}(2013), 181--199] put forward the following conjecture: Let $G$ be a tricyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with $n=20$ or $n\geq22$, then $\mathcal{E}(G)\leq \mathcal{E}(P_{n}^{6,6,6})$ with equality if and only if $G\cong P_{n}^{6,6,6}$. Let $G(n;a,b,k)$ denote the set of all connected bipartite tricyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with three vertex-disjoint cycles $C_{a}$, $C_{b}$ and $C_{k}$, where $n\geq 20$. In this paper, we try to prove that the conjecture is true for graphs in the class $G\in G(n;a,b,k)$, but as a consequence we can only show that this is true for most of the graphs in the class except for 9 families of such graphs.

Some Motzkin-Straus type results for non-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A remarkable connection between the order of a maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph was established by Motzkin and Straus in 1965. This connection and its extensions were applied in Turán problems of graphs and uniform hypergraphs. Very recently, the study of Turán densities of non-uniform hypergraphs has been motivated by extremal poset problems. In this paper, we give some Motzkin-Straus type results for non-uniform hypergraphs.

The $(k,\ell)$-rainbow index for complete bipartite and multipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A tree in an edge-colored graph $G$ is said to be a rainbow tree if no two edges on the tree share the same color. Given two positive integers $k$, $\ell$ with $k\geq 3$, the \emph{$(k,\ell)$-rainbow index} $rx_{k,\ell}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exist $\ell$ internally disjoint rainbow trees connecting $S$. This concept was introduced by Chartrand et al., and there have been very few results about it. In this paper, we investigate the $(k,\ell)$-rainbow index for complete bipartite graphs and complete multipartite graphs. Some asymptotic values of their $(k,\ell)$-rainbow index are obtained.

Graphs with 3-rainbow index $n-1$ and $n-2$
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph with an edge-coloring $c:E(G)\rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,q\},$ $q\in \mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same. A tree $T$ in $G$ is a $rainbow tree$ if no two edges of $T$ receive the same color. For a vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$, the tree connecting $S$ in $G$ is called an $S$-tree. The minimum number of colors that are needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that there is a rainbow $S$-tree for each $k$-set $S$ of $V(G)$ is called the $k$-rainbow index of $G$, denoted by $rx_k(G)$. In \cite{Zhang}, they got that the $k$-rainbow index of a tree is $n-1$ and the $k$-rainbow index of a unicyclic graph is $n-1$ or $n-2$. So there is an intriguing problem: Characterize graphs with the $k$-rainbow index $n-1$ and $n-2$. In this paper, we focus on $k=3$, and characterize the graphs whose 3-rainbow index is $n-1$ and $n-2$, respectively.

The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$, introduced by Chartrand et al., is a natural and nice generalization of the concept of (vertex-)connectivity. In this paper, we prove that for any two connected graphs $G$ and $H$, $κ_3(G\circ H)\geq κ_3(G)|V(H)|$. We also give upper bounds for $κ_3(G\Box H)$ and $κ_3(G\circ H)$. Moreover, all the bounds are sharp.

Tricyclic graphs with maximal revised Szeged index
Published • View PublicationBIB
The revised Szeged index of a graph $G$ is defined as $Sz^*(G)=\sum_{e=uv \in E}(n_u(e)+ n_0(e)/2)(n_v(e)+ n_0(e)/2),$ where $n_u(e)$ and $n_v(e)$ are, respectively, the number of vertices of $G$ lying closer to vertex $u$ than to vertex $v$ and the number of vertices of $G$ lying closer to vertex $v$ than to vertex $u$, and $n_0(e)$ is the number of vertices equidistant to $u$ and $v$. In this paper, we give an upper bound of the revised Szeged index for a connected tricyclic graph, and also characterize those graphs that achieve the upper bound.
