Semifields, relative difference sets, and bent functions

Recently, the interest in semifields has increased due to the discovery of several new families and progress in the classification problem. Commutative semifields play an important role since they are equivalent to certain planar functions (in the case of odd characteristic) and to modified planar functions in even characteristic. Similarly, commutative semifields are equivalent to relative difference sets. The goal of this survey is to describe the connection between these concepts. Moreover, we shall discuss power mappings that are planar and consider component functions of planar mappings, which may be also viewed as projections of relative difference sets. It turns out that the component functions in the even characteristic case are related to negabent functions as well as to $\mathbb{Z}_4$-valued bent functions.

We give a Laurent series proof of the Habsieger-Kadell $q$-Morris identity, which is a common generalization of the $q$-Morris identity and the Aomoto constant term identity. The proof allows us to extend the theorem for some additional parameter cases.
Planar functions over fields of characteristic two

Classical planar functions are functions from a finite field to itself and give rise to finite projective planes. They exist however only for fields of odd characteristic. We study their natural counterparts in characteristic two, which we also call planar functions. They again give rise to finite projective planes, as recently shown by the second author. We give a characterisation of planar functions in characteristic two in terms of codes over $\mathbb{Z}_4$. We then specialise to planar monomial functions $f(x)=cx^t$ and present constructions and partial results towards their classification. In particular, we show that $t=1$ is the only odd exponent for which $f(x)=cx^t$ is planar (for some nonzero $c$) over infinitely many fields. The proof techniques involve methods from algebraic geometry.
(2^n,2^n,2^n,1)-relative difference sets and their representations

We show that every $(2^n,2^n,2^n,1)$-relative difference set $D$ in $\Z_4^n$ relative to $\Z_2^n$ can be represented by a polynomial $f(x)\in \F_{2^n}[x]$, where $f(x+a)+f(x)+xa$ is a permutation for each nonzero $a$. We call such an $f$ a planar function on $\F_{2^n}$. The projective plane $Π$ obtained from $D$ in the way of Ganley and Spence \cite{ganley_relative_1975} is coordinatized, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of $Π$ to be a presemifield plane. We also prove that a function $f$ on $\F_{2^n}$ with exactly two elements in its image set and $f(0)=0$ is planar, if and only if, $f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)$ for any $x,y\in\F_{2^n}$.
Sets of Zero-Difference Balanced Functions and Their Applications

Zero-difference balanced (ZDB) functions can be employed in many applications, e.g., optimal constant composition codes, optimal and perfect difference systems of sets, optimal frequency hopping sequences, etc. In this paper, two results are summarized to characterize ZDB functions, among which a lower bound is used to achieve optimality in applications and determine the size of preimage sets of ZDB functions. As the main contribution, a generic construction of ZDB functions is presented, and many new classes of ZDB functions can be generated. This construction is then extended to construct a set of ZDB functions, in which any two ZDB functions are related uniformly. Furthermore, some applications of such sets of ZDB functions are also introduced.
New extensions to the sumsets with polynomial restrictions
By taking the leading and the second leading coefficients of the Morris identity, we get new polynomial coefficients. These coefficients lead to new results in the sumsets with polynomial restrictions by the polynomial method of N. Alon.

A new family of commutative semifields with two parameters is presented. Its left and middle nucleus are both determined. Furthermore, we prove that for any different pairs of parameters, these semifields are not isotopic. It is also shown that, for some special parameters, one semifield in this family can lead to two inequivalent planar functions. Finally, using similar construction, new APN functions are given.

By extending Lv-Xin-Zhou's first layer formulas of the $q$-Dyson product, we prove Kadell's conjecture for the Dyson product and show the error of his $q$-analogous conjecture. With the extended formulas we establish a $q$-analog of Kadell's conjecture for the Dyson product.
A Note on the Isotopism of Commutative Semifields
We present an example of two isotopic but not strongly isotopic commutative semifields. This example shows that a recent result of Coulter and Henderson on semifield of order p^n, n odd, can not be generalized to the case n even.

In this paper, the closed-form expressions for the coefficients of $\frac{x_r^2}{x_s^2}$ and $\frac{x_r^2}{x_sx_t}$ in the Dyson product are found by applying an extension of Good's idea. As onsequences, we find several interesting Dyson style constant term identities.

By generalizing Gessel-Xin's Laurent series method for proving the Zeilberger-Bressoud $q$-Dyson Theorem, we establish a family of $q$-Dyson style constant term identities. These identities give explicit formulas for certain coefficients of the $q$-Dyson product, including three conjectures of Sills' as special cases and generalizing Stembridge's first layer formulas for characters of $SL(n,\mathbb{C})$.

We introduce an elementary method to give unified proofs of the Dyson, Morris, and Aomoto identities for constant terms of Laurent polynomials. These identities can be expressed as equalities of polynomials and thus can be proved by verifying them for sufficiently many values, usually at negative integers where they vanish. Our method also proves some special cases of the Forrester conjecture.
