New Lower Bounds for Permutation Arrays Using Contraction
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation array $A$ is a set of permutations on a finite set $Ω$, say of size $n$. Given distinct permutations $π, σ\in Ω$, we let $hd(π, σ) = |\{ x\in Ω: π(x) \ne σ(x) \}|$, called the Hamming distance between $π$ and $σ$. Now let $hd(A) =$ min$\{ hd(π, σ): π, σ\in A \}$. For positive integers $n$ and $d$ with $d\le n$, we let $M(n,d)$ be the maximum number of permutations in any array $A$ satisfying $hd(A) \geq d$. There is an extensive literature on the function $M(n,d)$, motivated in part by suggested applications to error correcting codes for message transmission over power lines. A basic fact is that if a permutation group $G$ is sharply $k$-transitive on a set of size $n\geq k$, then $M(n,n-k+1) = |G|$. Motivated by this we consider the permutation groups $AGL(1,q)$ and $PGL(2,q)$ acting sharply $2$-transitively on $GF(q)$ and sharply $3$-transitively on $GF(q)\cup \{\infty\}$ respectively. Applying a contraction operation to these groups, we obtain the following new lower bounds for prime powers $q$ satisfying $q\equiv 1$ (mod $3$). 1. $M(q-1,q-3)\geq (q^{2} - 1)/2$ for $q$ odd, $q\geq 7$, 2. $M(q-1,q-3)\geq (q-1)(q+2)/3$ for $q$ even, $q\geq 8$, 3. $M(q,q-3)\geq Kq^{2}\log q$ for some constant $K$ if $q$ is odd, $q\geq 13$. These results resolve a case left open in a previous paper \cite{BLS}, where it was shown that $M(q-1, q-3) \geq q^{2} - q$ and $M(q,q-3) \geq q^{3} - q$ for all prime powers $q$ such that $q\not \equiv 1$ (mod $3$). We also obtain lower bounds for $M(n,d)$ for a finite number of exceptional pairs $n,d$, by applying this contraction operation to the sharply $4$ and $5$-transitive Mathieu groups.

On the Bandwidth of the Kneser Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and $f: V\rightarrow [1,n]$ a one to one map of $V$ onto the integers $1$ through $n$. Let $dilation(f) =$ max$\{ |f(v) - f(w)|: vw\in E \}$. Define the {\it bandwidth} $B(G)$ of $G$ to be the minimum possible value of $dilation(f)$ over all such one to one maps $f$. Next define the {\it Kneser Graph} $K(n,r)$ to be the graph with vertex set $\binom{[n]}{r}$, the collection of $r$-subsets of an $n$ element set, and edge set $E = \{ vw: v,w\in \binom{[n]}{r}, v\cap w = \emptyset \}$. For fixed $r\geq 4$ and $n\rightarrow \infty$ we show that $$B(K(n,r)) = \binom{n}{r} - \frac{1}{2}\binom{n-1}{r-1} - 2\frac{n^{r-2}}{(r-2)!} + (r + 2)\frac{n^{r-3}}{(r-3)!} + O(n^{r-4}).$$

Embedding multidimensional grids into optimal hypercubes

Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs, with $|V(H)|\geq |V(G)| $, and $f:V(G)\rightarrow V(H)$ a one to one map of their vertices. Let $dilation(f) = max\{ dist_{H}(f(x),f(y)): xy\in E(G) \}$, where $dist_{H}(v,w)$ is the distance between vertices $v$ and $w$ of $H$. Now let $B(G,H)$ = $min_{f}\{ dilation(f) \}$, over all such maps $f$. The parameter $B(G,H)$ is a generalization of the classic and well studied "bandwidth" of $G$, defined as $B(G,P(n))$, where $P(n)$ is the path on $n$ points and $n = |V(G)|$. Let $[a_{1}\times a_{2}\times \cdots \times a_{k} ]$ be the $k$-dimensional grid graph with integer values $1$ through $a_{i}$ in the $i$'th coordinate. In this paper, we study $B(G,H)$ in the case when $G = [a_{1}\times a_{2}\times \cdots \times a_{k} ]$ and $H$ is the hypercube $Q_{n}$ of dimension $n = \lceil log_{2}(|V(G)|) \rceil$, the hypercube of smallest dimension having at least as many points as $G$. Our main result is that $$B( [a_{1}\times a_{2}\times \cdots \times a_{k} ],Q_{n}) \le 3k,$$ provided $a_{i} \geq 2^{22}$ for each $1\le i\le k$. For such $G$, the bound $3k$ improves on the previous best upper bound $4k+O(1)$. Our methods include an application of Knuth's result on two-way rounding and of the existence of spanning regular cyclic caterpillars in the hypercube.
