Young tableau descriptions for the polyhedral realizations of crystal bases in type $A_n$
By utilizing the combinatorial properties of various tableau models, we establish an explicit correspondence between the polyhedral realizations of the crystal bases $\mathcal B(λ)$ (resp. $\mathcal B(\infty)$) of type $A_n$ and the reverse semi-standard Young tableaux (resp. reverse marginally large tableaux), thereby providing a combinatorial description of the corresponding polyhedral realizations. Furthermore, a crystal structure on the set of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns is obtained via the correspondence between the polyhedral realization of $\mathcal{B}(λ)$ and the reverse tableaux. As applications of our framework, we present concrete combinatorial realizations of the crystal embedding of $\mathcal B(λ)$ into $\mathcal B(\infty)$ and the set of Lusztig data.
Intersecting families with covering number three II
A family $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ is called intersecting if $F\cap F'\neq \emptyset$ for all $F,F'\in \mathcal{F}$. The covering number of a family $\mathcal{F}$ is defined as the minimum size of $T\subset [n]$ such that $T\cap F\neq \emptyset$ for all $F\in \mathcal{F}$. In 1980, the first author proved that for sufficiently large $n$, any intersecting $k$-graph $\mathcal{F}$ with covering number at least three, satisfies $|\mathcal{F}|\leq \binom{n-1}{k-1}-\binom{n-k}{k-1}-\binom{n-k-1}{k-1}+\binom{n-2k}{k-1}+\binom{n-k-2}{k-3}+3$. There was very little progress during more than forty years but recently (cf. \cite{FW25}) with a completely
different approach we proved the same result for the full range $n\geq 2k$ and $k\geq 7$. In this short paper we prove the same inequality for all the remaining cases.
On the multipliers of a Singer quadrangle
A finite generalized quadrangle $\cS$ is a Singer quadrangle if it has an automorphism group that acts sharply transitively on its points. In this paper, we introduce the notion of multipliers for a Singer quadrangle and study their basic properties. As an application, we show that a point-primitive automorphism group of a thick generalized quadrangle cannot have O'Nan-Scott type HS (holomorph simple), which answers an open problem in \cite{Bamberg 2019}.
A search for Hadamard matrices of Williamson type
In this article, we consider a special class of Williamson type matrices which we call them near Williamson matrices. They are in fact four $n\times n$ $(-1, 1)$-matrices $A, B, C, D$ so that $A$ is circulant, $B,C,D$ are symmetric circulant, and they satisfy $AA^\top+BB^\top+CC^\top+DD^\top=4nI$. Using a computer search, we find all inequivalent near Williamson matrices for all odd orders at most $35$. We also show that such matrices exist for all odd orders up to $63$. As a consequence, we find the first known example of a quaternary Hadamard matrix of order $118$.
Moonflowers and efficient code sparsification
We introduce \emph{moonflowers}, a weaker analogue of sunflowers. A family of sets $S_1,\ldots,S_k$ is a $k$-moonflower if each set $S_i$ contains at least one element that is absent from all the others. We study the extremal problem of determining the largest possible size of a family of sets of size at most $w$ that avoids a $k$-moonflower, and obtain near-optimal bounds.
As an application, we revisit the code sparsification problem studied by Brakensiek and Guruswami (STOC 2025) and improve the bounds to near optimal. Concretely, we improve the dependence on the block length from poly-logarithmic to logarithmic, and show that such a dependence is necessary.
Normal approximation of the numbers of isolated edges and isolated 2-stars in uniform simple graphs with given vertex degrees
We consider the configuration model and the uniform simple graph with given degree sequence $\boldsymbol{d}=\left(d_i\right)_{i=1}^n$. We derive quantitative bounds for the errors in (i) joint normal-Poisson approximation to the numbers of isolated edges, isolated 2-stars, self-loops and double edges in the configuration model, and (ii) normal approximation to the numbers of isolated edges and isolated 2-stars conditioned on that the configuration model is simple. The latter provides the first finite sample normal approximation results for the uniform simple graph with given vertex degrees. To achieve this, we develop a new Stein's method for joint normal-Poisson approximation and a new coupling approach to sums of indicators, which may be of independent interest.
Ramsey-type $χ$-bounds for $χ$-bounded graph classes
We prove that for every path $P$, the class of graphs with no induced $P$ and no induced four-cycle $C_4$ is linearly $χ$-bounded. More generally, we ask for which pairs $\{T,H\}$ where $T$ is a forest and $H$ is a complete multipartite graph, every graph $G$ with no induced $T$ and no induced $H$ has chromatic number at most $C \cdot R(α(H),ω(G)+1)$ for some constant $C$ depending only on $T$ and $H$, where $R(\cdot,\cdot)$ denotes the usual Ramsey numbers. We show that this holds in the following two instances, which strengthen the case $T=P$ and $H=C_4$ mentioned above:
(1) every component of $T$ is a broom and $H$ is complete multipartite; or
(2) $T$ is a forest and $H$ is complete bipartite.
These two unify and substantially extend a number of previous results on linear and polynomial $χ$-boundedness for various graph classes.
For case (2), we also provide a new proof (with better bounds) of a recent result of Fox, Nenadov, and Pham on the existence of an induced copy of a fixed tree in a graph satisfying certain sparsity conditions.
An Upper Bound for Discrete Isometric Filling of Cycles
We study the discrete graph-metric analogue of Gromov's filling area problem for the cycle graph \(C_n\). An abstract triangulation \(K\) is an isometric filling of \(C_n\) if \(\partial K=C_n\) and the graph distance between any two boundary vertices is not shortened inside the \(1\)-skeleton of \(K\). Let \(D(n;ε)\) denote the minimum number of vertices in a \((1-ε)\)-Lipschitz filling of \(C_n\), and set \[ D^*=\liminf_{ε\to0^+}\liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{D(n;ε)}{n^2}. \] Previous work gives the general lower bound \(D^*\ge 1/8\), while discretizing the hemisphere gives the upper bound \[ D^*\le \frac{1}{π\sqrt3}. \] In this paper we give an explicit discrete construction which improves the hemispherical upper bound. More precisely, we construct isometric fillings \(K_n\) of \(C_n\) with \[ |V(K_n)|\le \left(\frac16+o(1)\right)n^2, \] and hence \[ D^*\le \frac16<\frac{1}{π\sqrt3}. \] This can directly illustrate the discrete filling area problem is a proper relaxation of Gromov's original filling area problem and cannot be used to settle Gromov's conjecture. The construction is a concentric annular filling.
Effective resistance and spanning trees in complete graphs with distance-class deletions
In this paper, we consider circulant graphs obtained from the complete graph $K_N$ by deleting all edges belonging to a prescribed distance class. We study, in a unified manner, the effective resistance, the expected hitting time, the number of spanning trees, and the number of two-component spanning forests of these graphs. For general distance-class deletions, these quantities admit natural spectral representations in terms of the Laplacian eigenvalues. However, such representations typically remain at the level of finite Fourier sums, and concise closed forms are not expected in general. We focus on the case of a single deleted distance class. When the number of vertices $N$ is odd and $\gcd(r,N)=1$, the graph $G_{N,r}$ is isomorphic to $G_{N,1}$. In this setting, we derive explicit exponential-type formulas for the effective resistance and the number of spanning trees, and obtain corresponding closed expressions for two-component spanning forests and expected hitting times. Our results show that the case $r=2$ is not essentially new, but follows from a general isomorphism structure underlying distance-class deletions. We also clarify the relation of our formulas to earlier results on the complete graph with a Hamiltonian cycle removed, and provide a unified derivation within a spectral framework. Moreover, by asymptotic analysis, we show that the ratio $τ(G_{N,1})/τ(K_N)$ converges to $e^{-2}$ as $N \to \infty$.
Proofs of four generating function conjectures for arbor polytopes
This paper proves four conjectured generating series, due to Chapoton, which concern invariants of posets and polytopes associated with a specific sequence of arbors. Two of these conjectures provide closed-form formulas for the generating series of the Zeta polynomial and the generating series of the M-triangle of the poset, respectively. The remaining two conjectures pertain, respectively, to the Ehrhart polynomial and the Laplace transform of the volume function of the associated arbor polytope.
No-three-in-line sets on the checkerboard grid
The classical no-three-in-line problem asks for the largest number (D(n)) of points that can be chosen from an (n \times n) grid with no three collinear. We study the checkerboard-restricted variant in which all chosen points lie in one fixed parity class of (x+y \pmod 2). Let (D_{\mathrm{mono}}(n)) be the corresponding optimum. The slope-(\pm1) diagonals give the elementary bound (D_{\mathrm{mono}}(n) \le 2n-2).
The main tool is a four-direction linear-programming relaxation on a fixed parity class, using rows, columns, and the two diagonal families of slopes (\pm1). For the ordinary square-grid problem this relaxation is trivial, but on the checkerboard it gives substantially tighter finite bounds. After symmetry reduction, the dual relaxation has three one-dimensional forms, according to the parity of (n) and the chosen colour class.
The main rigorous result is an exact continuum dual certificate for the formal continuum problem associated with the scaled odd-fat case. We construct explicit nonnegative functions satisfying the continuum obstacle inequalities and having objective value (α), where (401α^3-1744α^2+2240α-768=0) and (α) is the middle real root. This proves the upper bound (Λ_{\mathrm{fat}}\leα) for the odd-fat continuum relaxation. Finite LP computations are consistent with (α) as a limiting slope, and exact small-(n) data suggest the same scale for the original checkerboard optimum.
Average Hitting Times and Recurrence STRUCTURES I: Powers of Cycle Graphs
We investigate the average hitting times of simple random walks on the $k$-th power graph $C_N^k$ of the cycle graph $C_N$. First, we show that the average hitting times are characterized by a difference equation corresponding to the graph Laplacian. Next, by using the cyclic symmetry of $C_N^k$, we derive a spectral representation via Fourier analysis. Furthermore, by applying factorization and partial fraction decomposition of the corresponding difference operator, we obtain an explicit formula for the average hitting times consisting of a quadratic term and finitely many correction terms. These correction terms are described by second-order linear recurrence sequences associated with the characteristic polynomials, and can be regarded as natural generalizations of Fibonacci-type sequences. As a consequence, our formulas recover the known results for cycle graphs and squares of cycle graphs in a unified way. Moreover, from the formulas obtained for average hitting times, we derive explicit formulas for the effective resistances, the numbers of spanning trees, the numbers of two-component spanning forests, and the numbers of spanning trees of vertex-identified graphs. In particular, for the third power graph $C_N^3$ of the cycle graph, all of these quantities are written explicitly in terms of complex conjugate Fibonacci-type sequences. Our results clarify structural relations between random walk quantities and combinatorial quantities on cycle power graphs.
