On the Schläfli symbol of chiral extensions of polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an abstract $n$-polytope $\mathcal{K}$, an abstract $(n+1)$-polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is an extension of $\mathcal{K}$ if all the facets of $\mathcal{P}$ are isomorphic to $\mathcal{K}$. A chiral polytope is a polytope with maximal rotational symmetry that does not admit any reflections. If $\mathcal{P}$ is a chiral extension of $\mathcal{K}$, then all but the last entry of the Schläfli symbol of $\mathcal{P}$ are determined. In this paper we introduce some constructions of chiral extensions $\mathcal{P}$ of certain chiral polytopes in such a way that the last entry of the Schläfli symbol of $\mathcal{P}$ is arbitrarily large.

Flat extensions of abstract polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of constructing an abstract $(n+1)$-polytope $Q$ with $k$ facets isomorphic to a given $n$-polytope $P$, where $k \geq 3$. In particular, we consider the case where we want $Q$ to be $(n-2,n)$-flat, meaning that every $(n-2)$-face is incident to every $n$-face (facet). We show that if $P$ admits such a flat extension for a given $k$, then the facet graph of $P$ is $(k-1)$-colorable. Conversely, we show that if the facet graph is $(k-1)$-colorable and $k-1$ is prime, then $P$ admits a flat extension for that $k$. We also show that if $P$ is facet-bipartite, then for every even $k$, there is a flat extension $P|k$ such that every automorphism of $P$ extends to an automorphism of $P|k$. Finally, if $P$ is a facet-bipartite $n$-polytope and $Q$ is a vertex-bipartite $m$-polytope, we describe a flat amalgamation of $P$ and $Q$, an $(m+n-1)$-polytope that is $(n-2,n)$-flat, with $n$-faces isomorphic to $P$ and co-$(n-2)$-faces isomorphic to $Q$.
An existence result on two-orbit maniplexes
A maniplex of rank n is a connected, n-valent, edge-coloured graph that generalises abstract polytopes and maps. If the automorphism group of a maniplex M partitions the vertex-set of M into k distinct orbits, we say that M is a k-orbit n-maniplex. The symmetry type graph of M is the quotient pregraph obtained by contracting every orbit into a single vertex. Symmetry type graphs of maniplexes satisfy a series of very specific properties. The question arises whether any pregraph of order k satisfying these properties is the symmetry type graph of some k-orbit maniplex. We answer the question when k = 2.

Equivelar toroids with few flag-orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $(n+1)$-toroid is a quotient of a tessellation of the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space with a lattice group. Toroids are generalizations of maps in the torus on higher dimensions and also provide examples of abstract polytopes. Equivelar toroids are those that are induced by regular tessellations. In this paper we present a classification of equivelar $(n+1)$-toroids with at most $n$ flag-orbits; in particular, we discuss a classification of $2$-orbit toroids of arbitrary dimension.

Regular Incidence Complexes, Polytopes, and C-Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Regular incidence complexes are combinatorial incidence structures generalizing regular convex polytopes, regular complex polytopes, various types of incidence geometries, and many other highly symmetric objects. The special case of abstract regular polytopes has been well-studied. The paper describes the combinatorial structure of a regular incidence complex in terms of a system of distinguished generating subgroups of its automorphism group or a flag-transitive subgroup. Then the groups admitting a flag-transitive action on an incidence complex are characterized as generalized string C-groups. Further, extensions of regular incidence complexes are studied, and certain incidence complexes particularly close to abstract polytopes, called abstract polytope complexes, are investigated.

2-associahedra
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 19 (2019) 743-806 • View PublicationBIB
For any $r\geq 1$ and $\mathbf{n} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0}^r \setminus \{\mathbf0\}$ we construct a poset $W_{\mathbf{n}}$ called a 2-associahedron. The 2-associahedra arose in symplectic geometry, where they are expected to control maps between Fukaya categories of different symplectic manifolds. We prove that the completion $\widehat{W_{\mathbf{n}}}$ is an abstract polytope of dimension $|\mathbf{n}|+r-3$. There are forgetful maps $W_{\mathbf{n}} \to K_r$, where $K_r$ is the $(r-2)$-dimensional associahedron, and the 2-associahedra specialize to the associahedra (in two ways) and to the multiplihedra. In an appendix, we work out the 2- and 3-dimensional associahedra in detail.

Non-flat regular polytopes and restrictions on chiral polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
An abstract polytope is \emph{flat} if every facet is incident on every vertex. In this paper, we prove that no chiral polytope has flat finite regular facets and finite regular vertex-figures. We then determine the three smallest non-flat regular polytopes in each rank, and use this to show that for $n \geq 8$, a chiral $n$-polytope has at least $48(n-2)(n-2)!$ flags.

Open problems on k-orbit polytopes
We present 35 open problems on combinatorial, geometric and algebraic aspects of k-orbit abstract polytopes. We also present a theory of rooted polytopes that has appeared implicitly in previous work but has not been formalized before.
Highly symmetric hypertopes

We study incidence geometries that are thin and residually connected. These geometries generalise abstract polytopes. In this generalised setting, guided by the ideas from the polytopes theory, we introduce the concept of chirality, a property of orderly asymmetry occurring frequently in nature as a natural phenomenon. The main result in this paper is that automorphism groups of regular and chiral thin residually connected geometries need to be $C$-groups in the regular case and $C^+$-groups in the chiral case.

Polytopality of Maniplexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an abstract polytope $\cal P$, its flag graph is the edge-coloured graph whose vertices are the flags of $\cal P$ and the $i$-edges correspond to $i$-adjacent flags. Flag graphs of polytopes are maniplexes. On the other hand, given a maniplex $\cal M$, on can define a poset $\cal P_M$ by means of the non empty intersection of its faces. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions (in terms of graphs) on a maniplex $\cal M$ in order for $\cal P_M$ to be an abstract polytope. Moreover, in such case, we show that $\cal M$ is isomorphic to the flag graph of $\cal P_M$. This in turn gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a maniplex to be (isomorphic to) the flag graph of a polytope.

Products of abstract polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two convex polytopes, the join, the cartesian product and the direct sum of them are well understood. In this paper we extend these three kinds of products to abstract polytopes and introduce a new product, called the topological product, which also arises in a natural way. We show that these products have unique prime factorization theorems. We use this to compute the automorphism group of a product in terms of the automorphism groups of the factors and show that (non trivial) products are almost never regular or two-orbit polytopes. We finish the paper by studying the monodromy group of a product, show that such a group is always an extension of a symmetric group, and give some examples in which this extension splits.

Polytopes with Preassigned Automorphism Groups

We prove that every finite group is the automorphism group of a finite abstract polytope isomorphic to a face-to-face tessellation of a sphere by topological copies of convex polytopes. We also show that this abstract polytope may be realized as a convex polytope.
On a canonical construction of tesselated surfaces via finite group theory, Part I
This paper is the first part in a 2 part study of an elementary functorial construction from the category of finite non-abelian groups to a category of singular compact, oriented 2-manifolds. After a desingularization process this construction results in a collection of compact, connected, oriented tesselated smooth surfaces equipped with a closed-cell structure which is face and edge transitive and which has at most 2 orbits of vertices. These tesselated surfaces can also be viewed as abstract 3-polytopes (or as graph embeddings in the corresponding surface) which are either equivar or dual to abstract quasiregular polytopes. This construction generally results in a large collection of tesselated surfaces per group, for example when the construction is applied to Σ_6 it yields 4477 tesselated surfaces of 27 distinct genus and even more varieties of tesselation cell structure. We study the distribution of these surfaces in various groups and some interesting resulting tesselations. In a second paper, we show that extensions of groups result in branched coverings between the component surfaces in their decompositions. We also exploit functoriality to obtain interesting faithful, orientation preserving actions of subquotients of these groups and their automorphism groups on these surfaces and in the corresponding mapping class groups.

Tight orientably-regular polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every equivelar abstract polytope of type $\{p_1, \ldots, p_{n-1}\}$ has at least $2p_1 \cdots p_{n-1}$ flags. Polytopes that attain this lower bound are called tight. Here we investigate the question of under what conditions there is a tight orientably-regular polytope of type $\{p_1, \ldots, p_{n-1}\}$. We show that it is necessary and sufficient that whenever $p_i$ is odd, both $p_{i-1}$ and $p_{i+1}$ are even divisors of $2p_i$.
Symmetry Type Graphs of Abstract Polytopes and Maniplexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-orbit maniplex is one that has $k$ orbits of flags under the action of its automorphism group. In this paper we extend the notion of symmetry type graphs of maps to that of maniplexes and polytopes and make use of them to study $k$-orbit maniplexes, as well as fully-transitive 3-maniplexes. In particular, we show that there are no fully-transtive $k$-orbit 3-mainplexes with $k > 1$ an odd number, we classify 3-orbit mainplexes and determine all face transitivities for 3- and 4-orbit maniplexes. Moreover, we give generators of the automorphism group of a polytope or a maniplex, given its symmetry type graph. Finally, we extend these notions to oriented polytopes, in particular we classify oriented 2-orbit maniplexes and give generators for their orientation preserving automorphism group.

Cube-Like Polytopes and Complexes
The main purpose of this paper is to popularize Danzer's power complex construction and establish some new results about covering maps between two power complexes. Power complexes are cube-like combinatorial structures that share many structural properties with higher-dimensional cubes and cubical tessellations on manifolds. Power complexes that are also abstract polytopes have repeatedly appeared somewhat unexpectedly in various contexts, although often under a different name. However, the non-polytope case is largely unexplored.
Minimal covers of the prisms and antiprisms

This paper contains a classication of the regular minimal abstract polytopes that act as covers for the convex polyhedral prisms and antiprisms. It includes a detailed discussion of their topological structure, and completes the enumeration of such covers for convex uniform polyhedra. Additionally, this paper addresses related structural questions in the theory of string C-groups.
Symmetric Graphicahedra

Given a connected graph G with p vertices and q edges, the G-graphicahedron is a vertex-transitive simple abstract polytope of rank q whose edge-graph is isomorphic to a Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_p associated with G. The paper explores combinatorial symmetry properties of G-graphicahedra, focussing in particular on transitivity properties of their automorphism groups. We present a detailed analysis of the graphicahedra for the q-star graphs K_{1,q} and the q-cycles C_q. The C_q-graphicahedron is intimately related to the geometry of the infinite Euclidean Coxeter group \tilde{A}_{q-1} and can be viewed as an edge-transitive tessellation of the (q-1)-torus by (q-1)-dimensional permutahedra, obtained as a quotient, modulo the root lattice A_{q-1}, of the Voronoi tiling for the dual root lattice A_{q-1}^* in Euclidean (q-1)-space.
Colorful Polytopes and Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper investigates connections between abstract polytopes and properly edge colored graphs. Given any finite n-edge-colored n-regular graph G, we associate to G a simple abstract polytope P_G of rank n, called the colorful polytope of G, with 1-skeleton isomorphic to G. We investigate the interplay between the geometric, combinatorial, or algebraic properties of the polytope P_G and the combinatorial or algebraic structure of the underlying graph G, focussing in particular on aspects of symmetry. Several such families of colorful polytopes are studied including examples derived from a Cayley graph, in particular the graphicahedra, as well as the flag adjacency polytopes and related monodromy polytopes associated with a given abstract polytope. The duals of certain families of colorful polytopes have been important in the topological study of colored triangulations and crystallization of manifolds.

Constructing Self-Dual Chiral Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
An abstract polytope is chiral if its automorphism group has two orbits on the flags, such that adjacent flags belong to distinct orbits. There are still few examples of chiral polytopes, and few constructions that can create chiral polytopes with specified properties. In this paper, we show how to build self-dual chiral polytopes using the mixing construction for polytopes.
