Nontrivial independent sets of bipartite graphs and cross-intersecting families
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G(X,Y)$ be a connected, non-complete bipartite graph with $|X|\leq |Y|$. An independent set $A$ of $G(X,Y)$ is said to be trivial if $A\subseteq X$ or $A\subseteq Y$. Otherwise, $A$ is nontrivial. By $α(X,Y)$ we denote the size of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. We prove that if the automorphism group of $G(X,Y)$ is transitive on $X$ and $Y$, then $α(X,Y)=|Y|-d(X)+1$, where $d(X)$ is the common degree of vertices in $X$. We also give the structures of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. As applications of this result, we give the upper bound of sizes of two cross-$t$-intersecting families of finite sets, finite vector spaces and permutations.

H-colouring bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an {\em $H$-colouring} of $G$ (or {\em homomorphism} from $G$ to $H$) is a function from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves adjacency. $H$-colourings generalize such graph theory notions as proper colourings and independent sets. For a given $H$, $k \in V(H)$ and $G$ we consider the proportion of vertices of $G$ that get mapped to $k$ in a uniformly chosen $H$-colouring of $G$. Our main result concerns this quantity when $G$ is regular and bipartite. We find numbers $0 \leq a^-(k) \leq a^+(k) \leq 1$ with the property that for all such $G$, with high probability the proportion is between $a^-(k)$ and $a^+(k)$, and we give examples where these extremes are achieved. For many $H$ we have $a^-(k) = a^+(k)$ for all $k$ and so in these cases we obtain a quite precise description of the almost sure appearance of a randomly chosen $H$-colouring. As a corollary, we show that in a uniform proper $q$-colouring of a regular bipartite graph, if $q$ is even then with high probability every colour appears on a proportion close to $1/q$ of the vertices, while if $q$ is odd then with high probability every colour appears on at least a proportion close to $1/(q+1)$ of the vertices and at most a proportion close to $1/(q-1)$ of the vertices. Our results generalize to natural models of weighted $H$-colourings, and also to bipartite graphs which are sufficiently close to regular. As an application of this latter extension we describe the typical structure of $H$-colourings of graphs which are obtained from $n$-regular bipartite graphs by percolation, and we show that $p=1/n$ is a threshold function across which the typical structure changes. The approach is through entropy, and extends work of J. Kahn, who considered the size of a randomly chosen independent set of a regular bipartite graph.

H-coloring tori
Published • View PublicationBIB
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a function from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves adjacency. $H$-colorings encode graph theory notions such as independent sets and proper colorings, and are a natural setting for the study of hard-constraint models in statistical physics. We study the set of $H$-colorings of the even discrete torus ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$, the graph on vertex set ${0, ..., m-1}^d$ ($m$ even) with two strings adjacent if they differ by 1 (mod $m$) on one coordinate and agree on all others. This is a bipartite graph, with bipartition classes ${\mathcal E}$ and ${\mathcal O}$. In the case $m=2$ the even discrete torus is the discrete hypercube or Hamming cube $Q_d$, the usual nearest neighbor graph on ${0,1}^d$. We obtain, for any $H$ and fixed $m$, a structural characterization of the space of $H$-colorings of ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$. We show that it may be partitioned into an exceptional subset of negligible size (as $d$ grows) and a collection of subsets indexed by certain pairs $(A,B) \in V(H)^2$, with each $H$-coloring in the subset indexed by $(A,B)$ having all but a vanishing proportion of vertices from ${\mathcal E}$ mapped to vertices from $A$, and all but a vanishing proportion of vertices from ${\mathcal O}$ mapped to vertices from $B$. This implies a long-range correlation phenomenon for uniformly chosen $H$-colorings of ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$ with $m$ fixed and $d$ growing. Our proof proceeds through an analysis of the entropy of a uniformly chosen $H$-coloring, and extends an approach of Kahn, who had considered the special case of $m=2$ and $H$ a doubly infinite path. All our results generalize to a natural weighted model of $H$-colorings.

Small (2,s)-colorable graphs without 1-obstacle representations
An obstacle representation of a graph G is a set of points on the plane together with a set of polygonal obstacles that determine a visibility graph isomorphic to G. The obstacle number of G is the minimum number of obstacles over all obstacle representations of G. Alpert, Koch, and Laison gave a 12-vertex bipartite graph and proved that its obstacle number is two. We show that a 10-vertex induced subgraph of this graph has obstacle number two. Alpert et al. also constructed very large graphs with vertex set consisting of a clique and an independent set in order to show that obstacle number is an unbounded parameter. We specify a 70-vertex graph with vertex set consisting of a clique and an independent set, and prove that it has obstacle number greater than one. This is an ancillary document to our article in press. We conclude by showing that a 10-vertex graph with vertex set consisting of two cliques has obstacle number greater than one, improving on a result therein.

The generalized connectivity of complete bipartite graphs
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph of order $n$, and $k$ an integer with $2\leq k\leq n$. For a set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, let $κ(S)$ denote the maximum number $\ell$ of edge-disjoint trees $T_1,T_2,...,T_\ell$ in $G$ such that $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$ for every pair $i,j$ of distinct integers with $1\leq i,j\leq \ell$. Chartrand et al. generalized the concept of connectivity as follows: The $k$-$connectivity$, denoted by $κ_k(G)$, of $G$ is defined by $κ_k(G)=$min$\{κ(S)\}$, where the minimum is taken over all $k$-subsets $S$ of $V(G)$. Thus $κ_2(G)=κ(G)$, where $κ(G)$ is the connectivity of $G$. Moreover, $κ_{n}(G)$ is the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees of $G$. This paper mainly focus on the $k$-connectivity of complete bipartite graphs $K_{a,b}$. First, we obtain the number of edge-disjoint spanning trees of $K_{a,b}$, which is $\lfloor\frac{ab}{a+b-1}\rfloor$, and specifically give the $\lfloor\frac{ab}{a+b-1}\rfloor$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. Then based on this result, we get the $k$-connectivity of $K_{a,b}$ for all $2\leq k \leq a+b$. Namely, if $k>b-a+2$ and $a-b+k$ is odd then $κ_{k}(K_{a,b})=\frac{a+b-k+1}{2}+\lfloor\frac{(a-b+k-1)(b-a+k-1)}{4(k-1)}\rfloor,$ if $k>b-a+2$ and $a-b+k$ is even then $κ_{k}(K_{a,b})=\frac{a+b-k}{2}+\lfloor\frac{(a-b+k)(b-a+k)}{4(k-1)}\rfloor,$ and if $k\leq b-a+2$ then $κ_{k}(K_{a,b})=a. $
The Complexity of Approximately Counting Stable Roommate Assignments
Published in JCSS 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the complexity of approximately counting stable roommate assignments in two models: (i) the $k$-attribute model, in which the preference lists are determined by dot products of "preference vectors" with "attribute vectors" and (ii) the $k$-Euclidean model, in which the preference lists are determined by the closeness of the "positions" of the people to their "preferred positions". Exactly counting the number of assignments is #P-complete, since Irving and Leather demonstrated #P-completeness for the special case of the stable marriage problem. We show that counting the number of stable roommate assignments in the $k$-attribute model ($k \geq 4$) and the 3-Euclidean model($k \geq 3$) is interreducible, in an approximation-preserving sense, with counting independent sets (of all sizes) (#IS) in a graph, or counting the number of satisfying assignments of a Boolean formula (#SAT). This means that there can be no FPRAS for any of these problems unless NP=RP. As a consequence, we infer that there is no FPRAS for counting stable roommate assignments (#SR) unless NP=RP. Utilizing previous results by the authors, we give an approximation-preserving reduction from counting the number of independent sets in a bipartite graph (#BIS) to counting the number of stable roommate assignments both in the 3-attribute model and in the 2-Euclidean model. #BIS is complete with respect to approximation-preserving reductions in the logically-defined complexity class $#RHΠ_1$. Hence, our result shows that an FPRAS for counting stable roommate assignments in the 3-attribute model would give an FPRAS for all of $#RHΠ_1$. We also show that the 1-attribute stable roommate problem always has either one or two stable roommate assignments, so the number of assignments can be determined exactly in polynomial time.

On the edit distance from $K_{2,t}$-free graphs (Extended Version)
Published • View PublicationBIB
The edit distance between two graphs on the same vertex set is defined to be the size of the symmetric difference of their edge sets. The edit distance function of a hereditary property, $\mathcal{H}$, is a function of $p$, and measures, asymptotically, the furthest graph of edge density $p$ from $\mathcal{H}$ under this metric. In this paper, we address the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$, the property of having no induced copy of the complete bipartite graph with 2 vertices in one class and $t$ in the other. Employing an assortment of techniques and colored regularity graph constructions, we are able to determine the edit distance function over the entire domain $p\in [0,1]$ when $t=3,4$ and extend the interval over which the edit distance function for $\forb(K_{2,t})$ is known for all values of $t$, determining its maximum value for all odd $t$. We also prove that the function for odd $t$ has a nontrivial interval on which it achieves its maximum. These are the only known principal hereditary properties for which this occurs. In the process of studying this class of functions, we encounter some surprising connections to extremal graph theory problems, such as strongly regular graphs and the problem of Zarankiewicz. This is an extended version of a paper with the same name now published in the Journal of Graph Theory \cite{jgt_version}. In particular, this version contains Appendix A, which has tables and graphs pertaining to the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$ for small $t$, and Appendix B, which has the proofs of Lemma 31, Proposition 32, Proposition 33, and Lemma 34.

On the edit distance from $K_{2,t}$-free graphs II: Cases $t\geq 5$
The edit distance between two graphs on the same vertex set is defined to be size of the symmetric difference of their edge sets. The edit distance function of a hereditary property, $\mathcal{H}$, is a function of $p$ and measures, asymptotically, the furthest graph with edge density $p$ from $\mathcal{H}$ under this metric. The edit distance function has proven to be difficult to compute for many hereditary properties. Some surprising connections to extremal graph theory problems, such as strongly regular graphs and the problem of Zarankiewicz, have been uncovered in attempts to compute various edit distance functions. In this paper, we address the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$ when $t\geq5$, the property of having no induced copy of the complete bipartite graph with 2 vertices in one class and $t$ in the other. This work continues from a prior paper by the authors. Employing an assortment of techniques and colored regularity graph constructions, we are able to extend the interval over which the edit distance function for this hereditary property is generally known and determine its maximum value for all odd $t$. We also explore several constructions to improve upon known upper bounds for the function.

Locally-finite connected-homogeneous digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph is connected-homogeneous if any isomorphism between finite connected induced subdigraphs extends to an automorphism of the digraph. We consider locally-finite connected-homogeneous digraphs with more than one end. In the case that the digraph embeds a triangle we give a complete classification, obtaining a family of tree-like graphs constructed by gluing together directed triangles. In the triangle-free case we show that these digraphs are highly arc-transitive. We give a classification in the two-ended case, showing that all examples arise from a simple construction given by gluing along a directed line copies of some fixed finite directed complete bipartite graph. When the digraph has infinitely many ends we show that the descendants of a vertex form a tree, and the reachability graph (which is one of the basic building blocks of the digraph) is one of: an even cycle, a complete bipartite graph, the complement of a perfect matching, or an infinite semiregular tree. We give examples showing that each of these possibilities is realised as the reachability graph of some connected-homogeneous digraph, and in the process we obtain a new family of highly arc-transitive digraphs without property Z.

Zero Forcing Sets and Bipartite Circulants
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a class of regular bipartite graphs whose biadjacency matrices are circulant matrices and we describe some of their properties. Notably, we compute upper and lower bounds for the zero forcing number for such a graph based only on the parameters that describe its biadjacency matrix. The main results of the paper characterize the bipartite circulant graphs that achieve equality in the lower bound.

Bipartite graphs with a perfect matching and digraphs
Published in Advances and applications in discrete mathematics, Volume 3, Number 2, April 2009, 155-164 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce a corresponding between bipartite graphs with a perfect matching and digraphs, which implicates an equivalent relation between the extendibility of bipartite graphs and the strongly connectivity of digraphs. Such an equivalent relation explains the similar results on $k$-extendable bipartite graphs and $k$-strong digraphs. We also study the relation among $k$-extendable bipartite graphs, $k$-strong digraphs and combinatorial matrices. For bipartite graphs that are not 1-extendable and digraphs that are not strong, we prove that the elementary components and strong components are counterparts.

A determinant formula for the Jones polynomial of pretzel knots
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications vol. 21, no. 6 (2012) 1250062 (23 pages) • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix of a plane bipartite graph obtained from a pretzel knot diagram. The determinant of this matrix after evaluation is shown to be the Jones polynomial of the pretzel knot by way of perfect matchings (or dimers) of this graph. The weights are Tutte's activity letters that arise because the Jones polynomial is a specialization of the signed version of the Tutte polynomial. The relationship is formalized between the familiar spanning tree setting for the Tait graph and the perfect matchings of the plane bipartite graph above. Evaluations of these activity words are related to the chain complex for the Champanerkar-Kofman spanning tree model of reduced Khovanov homology.

Complete solution to a problem on the maximal energy of unicyclic bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The energy of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Denote by $C_n$ the cycle, and $P_n^{6}$ the unicyclic graph obtained by connecting a vertex of $C_6$ with a leaf of $P_{n-6}$\,. Caporossi et al. conjecture that the unicyclic graph with maximal energy is $P_n^6$ for $n=8,12,14$ and $n\geq 16$. In``Y. Hou, I. Gutman and C. Woo, Unicyclic graphs with maximal energy, {\it Linear Algebra Appl.} {\bf 356}(2002), 27--36", the authors proved that $E(P_n^6)$ is maximal within the class of the unicyclic bipartite $n$-vertex graphs differing from $C_n$\,. And they also claimed that the energy of $C_n$ and $P_n^6$ is quasi-order incomparable and left this as an open problem. In this paper, by utilizing the Coulson integral formula and some knowledge of real analysis, especially by employing certain combinatorial techniques, we show that the energy of $P_n^6$ is greater than that of $C_n$ for $n=8,12,14$ and $n\geq 16$, which completely solves this open problem and partially solves the above conjecture.
Locally identifying coloring of graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 19(2) (2012), #P40 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of locally identifying coloring of a graph. A proper vertex-coloring c of a graph G is said to be locally identifying, if for any adjacent vertices u and v with distinct closed neighborhood, the sets of colors that appear in the closed neighborhood of u and v are distinct. Let $χ_{lid}(G)$ be the minimum number of colors used in a locally identifying vertex-coloring of G. In this paper, we give several bounds on $χ_{lid}$ for different families of graphs (planar graphs, some subclasses of perfect graphs, graphs with bounded maximum degree) and prove that deciding whether $χ_{lid}(G)=3$ for a subcubic bipartite graph $G$ with large girth is an NP-complete problem.
On bipartite graphs of defect at most 4
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 160 (2012), 140-154 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the bipartite version of the degree/diameter problem, namely, given natural numbers Δ \geq 2 and D \geq 2, find the maximum number Nb(Δ,D) of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree Δ and diameter D. In this context, the Moore bipartite bound Mb(Δ,D) represents an upper bound for Nb(Δ,D). Bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ, diameter D and order Mb(Δ,D), called Moore bipartite graphs, have turned out to be very rare. Therefore, it is very interesting to investigate bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ \geq 2, diameter D \geq 2 and order Mb(Δ,D) - εwith small ε> 0, that is, bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs. The parameter εis called the defect. This paper considers bipartite graphs of defect at most 4, and presents all the known such graphs. Bipartite graphs of defect 2 have been studied in the past; if Δ \geq 3 and D \geq 3, they may only exist for D = 3. However, when ε> 2 bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs represent a wide unexplored area. The main results of the paper include several necessary conditions for the existence of bipartite $(Δ,d,-4)$-graphs; the complete catalogue of bipartite (3,D,-ε)-graphs with D \geq 2 and 0 \leq ε\leq 4; the complete catalogue of bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs with Δ \geq 2, 5 \leq D \leq 187 (D /= 6) and 0 \leq ε\leq 4; and a non-existence proof of all bipartite (Δ,D,-4)-graphs with Δ \geq 3 and odd D \geq 7. Finally, we conjecture that there are no bipartite graphs of defect 4 for Δ \geq 3 and D \geq 5, and comment on some implications of our results for upper bounds of Nb(Δ,D).

Directed Domination in Oriented Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A directed dominating set in a directed graph $D$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $V$ such that every vertex $u \in V(D) \setminus S$ has an adjacent vertex $v$ in $S$ with $v$ directed to $u$. The directed domination number of $D$, denoted by $γ(D)$, is the minimum cardinality of a directed dominating set in $D$. The directed domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $Γ_d(G)$, which is the maximum directed domination number $γ(D)$ over all orientations $D$ of $G$. The directed domination number of a complete graph was first studied by Erdös [Math. Gaz. 47 (1963), 220--222], albeit in disguised form. We extend this notion to directed domination of all graphs. If $α$ denotes the independence number of a graph $G$, we show that if $G$ is a bipartite graph, we show that $Γ_d(G) = α$. We present several lower and upper bounds on the directed domination number.

Computing the permanental polynomials of bipartite graphs by Pfaffian orientation
Published • View PublicationBIB
The permanental polynomial of a graph $G$ is $π(G,x)\triangleq\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$. From the result that a bipartite graph $G$ admits an orientation $G^e$ such that every cycle is oddly oriented if and only if it contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$, Yan and Zhang showed that the permanental polynomial of such a bipartite graph $G$ can be expressed as the characteristic polynomial of the skew adjacency matrix $A(G^e)$. In this paper we first prove that this equality holds only if the bipartite graph $G$ contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. Then we prove that such bipartite graphs are planar. Further we mainly show that a 2-connected bipartite graph contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$ if and only if it is planar 1-cycle resonant. This implies that each cycle is oddly oriented in any Pfaffian orientation of a 2-connected bipartite graph containing no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. As applications, permanental polynomials for some types of bipartite graphs are computed.

Dependence of Betti Numbers on Characteristic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.
Level Eulerian Posets
Published in Graphs Combin. 29 (2013), no. 4, 857-882 • View PublicationBIB
The notion of level posets is introduced. This class of infinite posets has the property that between every two adjacent ranks the same bipartite graph occurs. When the adjacency matrix is indecomposable, we determine the length of the longest interval one needs to check to verify Eulerianness. Furthermore, we show that every level Eulerian poset associated to an indecomposable matrix has even order. A condition for verifying shellability is introduced and is automated using the algebra of walks. Applying the Skolem--Mahler--Lech theorem, the ${\bf ab}$-series of a level poset is shown to be a rational generating function in the non-commutative variables ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf b}$. In the case the poset is also Eulerian, the analogous result holds for the ${\bf cd}$-series. Using coalgebraic techniques a method is developed to recognize the ${\bf cd}$-series matrix of a level Eulerian poset.

Parity balance of the $i$-th dimension edges in Hamiltonian cycles of the hypercube
Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer, and let $i\in\{0,...,n-1\}$. An $i$-th dimension edge in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ is an edge ${v_1}{v_2}$ such that $v_1,v_2$ differ just at their $i$-th entries. The parity of an $i$-th dimension edge $\edg{v_1}{v_2}$ is the number of 1's modulus 2 of any of its vertex ignoring the $i$-th entry. We prove that the number of $i$-th dimension edges appearing in a given Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_n$ with parity zero coincides with the number of edges with parity one. As an application of this result it is introduced and explored the conjecture of the inscribed squares in Hamiltonian cycles of the hypercube: Any Hamiltonian cycle in $Q_n$ contains two opposite edges in a 4-cycle. We prove this conjecture for $n \le 7$, and for any Hamiltonian cycle containing more than $2^{n-2}$ edges in the same dimension. This bound is finally improved considering the equi-independence number of $Q_{n-1}$, which is a concept introduced in this paper for bipartite graphs.
