We introduce sequentially $S_r$ modules over a commutative graded ring and sequentially $S_r$ simplicial complexes. This generalizes two properties for modules and simplicial complexes: being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, and satisfying Serre's condition $S_r$. In analogy with the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay property, we show that a simplicial complex is sequentially $S_r$ if and only if its pure $i$-skeleton is $S_r$ for all $i$. For $r=2$, we provide a more relaxed characterization. As an algebraic criterion, we prove that a simplicial complex is sequentially $S_r$ if and only if the minimal free resolution of the ideal of its Alexander dual is componentwise linear in the first $r$ steps. We apply these results for a graph, i.e., for the simplicial complex of the independent sets of vertices of a graph. We characterize sequentially $S_r$ cycles showing that the only sequentially $S_2$ cycles are odd cycles and, for $r\ge 3$, no cycle is sequentially $S_r$ with the exception of cycles of length 3 and 5. We extend certain known results on sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graphs to the case of sequentially $S_r$ graphs. We prove that a bipartite graph is vertex decomposable if and only if it is sequentially $S_2$. We provide some more results on certain graphs which in particular implies that any graph with no chordless even cycle is sequentially $S_2$. Finally, we propose some questions.
Subgraph densities in signed graphons and the local Sidorenko conjecture
We prove inequalities between the densities of various bipartite subgraphs in signed graphs and graphons. One of the main inequalities is that the density of any bipartite graph with girth r cannot exceed the density of the r-cycle. This study is motivated by Sidorenko's conjecture, which states that the density of a bipartite graph F with m edges in any graph G is at least the m-th power of the edge density of G. Another way of stating this is that the graph G with given edge density minimizing the number of copies of F is, asymptotically, a random graph. We prove that this is true locally, i.e., for graphs G that are "close" to a random graph.

In this paper we consider a simple Markov chain for bipartite graphs with given degree sequence on $n$ vertices. We show that the mixing time of this Markov chain is bounded above by a polynomial in $n$ in case of {\em semi-regular} degree sequence. The novelty of our approach lays in the construction of the canonical paths in Sinclair's method.
Note on the Rainbow $k$-Connectivity of Regular Complete Bipartite Graphs
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. For a $κ$-connected graph $G$ and an integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq κ$, the rainbow $k$-connectivity $rc_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the minimum integer $j$ for which there exists a $j$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ internally disjoint rainbow paths. Denote by $K_{r,r}$ an $r$-regular complete bipartite graph. Chartrand et al. in "G. Chartrand, G.L. Johns, K.A. McKeon, P. Zhang, The rainbow connectivity of a graph, Networks 54(2009), 75-81" left an open question of determining an integer $g(k)$ for which the rainbow $k$-connectivity of $K_{r,r}$ is 3 for every integer $r\geq g(k)$. This short note is to solve this question by showing that $rc_k(K_{r,r})=3$ for every integer $r\geq 2k\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$, where $k\geq 2$ is a positive integer.

We introduce a construction on a flag complex that, by means of modifying the associated graph, generates a new flag complex whose $h$-factor is the face vector of the original complex. This construction yields a vertex-decomposable, hence Cohen-Macaulay, complex. From this we get a (non-numerical) characterisation of the face vectors of flag complexes and deduce also that the face vector of a flag complex is the $h$-vector of some vertex-decomposable flag complex. We conjecture that the converse of the latter is true and prove this, by means of an explicit construction, for $h$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay flag complexes arising from bipartite graphs. We also give several new characterisations of bipartite graphs with Cohen-Macaulay or Buchsbaum independence complexes.
Locally $s$-distance transitive graphs

We give a unified approach to analysing, for each positive integer $s$, a class of finite connected graphs that contains all the distance transitive graphs as well as the locally $s$-arc transitive graphs of diameter at least $s$. A graph is in the class if it is connected and if, for each vertex $v$, the subgroup of automorphisms fixing $v$ acts transitively on the set of vertices at distance $i$ from $v$, for each $i$ from 1 to $s$. We prove that this class is closed under forming normal quotients. Several graphs in the class are designated as degenerate, and a nondegenerate graph in the class is called basic if all its nontrivial normal quotients are degenerate. We prove that, for $s\geq 2$, a nondegenerate, nonbasic graph in the class is either a complete multipartite graph, or a normal cover of a basic graph. We prove further that, apart from the complete bipartite graphs, each basic graph admits a faithful quasiprimitive action on each of its (1 or 2) vertex orbits, or a biquasiprimitive action. These results invite detailed additional analysis of the basic graphs using the theory of quasiprimitive permutation groups.
Boxicity and Poset Dimension

Let $G$ be a simple, undirected, finite graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A $k$-dimensional box is a Cartesian product of closed intervals $[a_1,b_1]\times [a_2,b_2]\times...\times [a_k,b_k]$. The {\it boxicity} of $G$, $\boxi(G)$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of $k$-dimensional boxes, i.e. each vertex is mapped to a $k$-dimensional box and two vertices are adjacent in $G$ if and only if their corresponding boxes intersect. Let $\poset=(S,P)$ be a poset where $S$ is the ground set and $P$ is a reflexive, anti-symmetric and transitive binary relation on $S$. The dimension of $\poset$, $\dim(\poset)$ is the minimum integer $t$ such that $P$ can be expressed as the intersection of $t$ total orders. Let $G_\poset$ be the \emph{underlying comparability graph} of $\poset$, i.e. $S$ is the vertex set and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are comparable in $\poset$. It is a well-known fact that posets with the same underlying comparability graph have the same dimension. The first result of this paper links the dimension of a poset to the boxicity of its underlying comparability graph. In particular, we show that for any poset $\poset$, $\boxi(G_\poset)/(χ(G_\poset)-1) \le \dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$, where $χ(G_\poset)$ is the chromatic number of $G_\poset$ and $χ(G_\poset)\ne1$. It immediately follows that if $\poset$ is a height-2 poset, then $\boxi(G_\poset)\le \dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$ since the underlying comparability graph of a height-2 poset is a bipartite graph. The second result of the paper relates the boxicity of a graph $G$ with a natural partial order associated with the \emph{extended double cover} of $G$, denoted as $G_c$: Note that $G_c$ is a bipartite graph with partite sets $A$ and $B$ which are copies of $V(G)$ such that corresponding to every $u\in V(G)$, there are two vertices $u_A\in A$ and $u_B\in B$ and $\{u_A,v_B\}$ is an edge in $G_c$ if and only if either $u=v$ or $u$ is adjacent to $v$ in $G$. Let $\poset_c$ be the natural height-2 poset associated with $G_c$ by making $A$ the set of minimal elements and $B$ the set of maximal elements. We show that $\frac{\boxi(G)}{2} \le \dim(\poset_c) \le 2\boxi(G)+4$. These results have some immediate and significant consequences. The upper bound $\dim(\poset)\le 2\boxi(G_\poset)$ allows us to derive hitherto unknown upper bounds for poset dimension such as $\dim(\poset)\le 2\tw(G_\poset)+4$, since boxicity of any graph is known to be at most its $\tw+2$. In the other direction, using the already known bounds for partial order dimension we get the following: (1) The boxicity of any graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is $O(Δ\log^2Δ)$ which is an improvement over the best known upper bound of $Δ^2+2$. (2) There exist graphs with boxicity $Ω(Δ\logΔ)$. This disproves a conjecture that the boxicity of a graph is $O(Δ)$. (3) There exists no polynomial-time algorithm to approximate the boxicity of a bipartite graph on $n$ vertices with a factor of $O(n^{0.5-ε})$ for any $ε>0$, unless $NP=ZPP$.
On the Period Lengths of the Parallel Chip-Firing Game
The parallel chip-firing game is a periodic automaton on graphs in which vertices "fire" chips to their neighbors. In 1989, Bitar conjectured that the period of a parallel chip-firing game with n vertices is at most n. Though this conjecture was disproven in 1994 by Kiwi et. al., it has been proven for particular classes of graphs, specifically trees (Bitar and Goles, 1992) and the complete graph K_n (Levine, 2008). We prove Bitar's conjecture for complete bipartite graphs and characterize completely all possible periods for positions of the parallel chip-firing game on such graphs. Furthermore, we extend our construction of all possible periods for games on the bipartite graph to games on complete c-partite graphs, c>2, and prove some pertinent lemmas about games on general simple connected graphs.
Almost spanning subgraphs of random graphs after adversarial edge removal
Let Delta>1 be a fixed integer. We show that the random graph G(n,p) with p>>(log n/n)^{1/Delta} is robust with respect to the containment of almost spanning bipartite graphs H with maximum degree Delta and sublinear bandwidth in the following sense: asymptotically almost surely, if an adversary deletes arbitrary edges in G(n,p) such that each vertex loses less than half of its neighbours, then the resulting graph still contains a copy of all such H.

We consider the set of all graphs on n labeled vertices with prescribed degrees D=(d_1, ..., d_n). For a wide class of tame degree sequences D we prove a computationally efficient asymptotic formula approximating the number of graphs within a relative error which approaches 0 as n grows. As a corollary, we prove that the structure of a random graph with a given tame degree sequence D is well described by a certain maximum entropy matrix computed from D. We also establish an asymptotic formula for the number of bipartite graphs with prescribed degrees of vertices, or, equivalently, for the number of 0-1 matrices with prescribed row and column sums.

Consider a graph obtained by taking edge disjoint union of $k$ complete bipartite graphs. Alon, Saks and Seymour conjectured that such graph has chromatic number at most $k+1$. This well known conjecture remained open for almost twenty years. In this paper, we construct a counterexample to this conjecture and discuss several related problems in combinatorial geometry and communication complexity.

Lovasz and Plummer conjectured in the 1970's that cubic bridgeless graphs have exponentially many perfect matchings. This conjecture has been verified for bipartite graphs by Voorhoeve in 1979, and for planar graphs by Chudnovsky and Seymour in 2008, but in general only linear bounds are known. In this paper, we provide the first superlinear bound in the general case.

Let d = (d1, d2, ..., dn) be a vector of non-negative integers with even sum. We prove some basic facts about the structure of a random graph with degree sequence d, including the probability of a given subgraph or induced subgraph. Although there are many results of this kind, they are restricted to the sparse case with only a few exceptions. Our focus is instead on the case where the average degree is approximately a constant fraction of n. Our approach is the multidimensional saddle-point method. This extends the enumerative work of McKay and Wormald (1990) and is analogous to the theory developed for bipartite graphs by Greenhill and McKay (arXiv:math/0701600, 2009).

A bipartite graph is {\em pseudo 2--factor isomorphic} if all its 2--factors have the same parity of number of circuits. In \cite{ADJLS} we proved that the only essentially 4--edge-connected pseudo 2--factor isomorphic cubic bipartite graph of girth 4 is $K_{3,3}$, and conjectured \cite[Conjecture 3.6]{ADJLS} that the only essentially 4--edge-connected cubic bipartite graphs are $K_{3,3}$, the Heawood graph and the Pappus graph.
There exists a characterization of symmetric configurations $n_3$ %{\bf decide notation and how to use it in the rest of the paper} due to Martinetti (1886) in which all symmetric configurations $n_3$ can be obtained from an infinite set of so called {\em irreducible} configurations \cite{VM}. The list of irreducible configurations has been completed by Boben \cite{B} in terms of their {\em irreducible Levi graphs}.
In this paper we characterize irreducible pseudo 2--factor isomorphic cubic bipartite graphs proving that the only pseudo 2--factor isomorphic irreducible Levi graphs are the Heawood and Pappus graphs. Moreover, the obtained characterization allows us to partially prove the above Conjecture.
Approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Potts model

We provide evidence that it is computationally difficult to approximate the partition function of the ferromagnetic q-state Potts model when q>2. Specifically we show that the partition function is hard for the complexity class #RHPi_1 under approximation-preserving reducibility. Thus, it is as hard to approximate the partition function as it is to find approximate solutions to a wide range of counting problems, including that of determining the number of independent sets in a bipartite graph. Our proof exploits the first order phase transition of the "random cluster" model, which is a probability distribution on graphs that is closely related to the q-state Potts model.

A graph $G$ is pseudo 2--factor isomorphic if the parity of the number of cycles in a 2--factor is the same for all 2--factors of $G$. In \cite{ADJLS} we proved that pseudo 2--factor isomorphic $k$--regular bipartite graphs exist only for $k \le 3$. In this paper we generalize this result for regular graphs which are not necessarily bipartite. We also introduce strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic graphs and we prove that pseudo and strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic 2k--regular graphs and $k$--regular digraphs do not exist for $k\geq 4$. Moreover, we present constructions of infinite families of regular graphs in these classes. In particular we show that the family of Flower snarks is strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic but not 2--factor isomorphic and we conjecture that, together with the Petersen and the Blanuša2 graphs, they are the only cyclically 4--edge--connected snarks for which each 2--factor contains only cycles of odd length.
Bipartite $S_2$ graphs are Cohen-Macaulay
In this paper we show that if the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex of independent sets of a bipartite graph $G$ satisfies Serre's condition $S_2$, then $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. As a consequence, the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs due to Herzog and Hibi carries over this family of bipartite graphs. We check that the equivalence of Cohen-Macaulay property and the condition $S_2$ is also true for chordal graphs and we classify cyclic graphs with respect to the condition $S_2$.

A 2-cell embedding of a graph $G$ into a closed (orientable or nonorientable) surface is called regular if its automorphism group acts regularly on the flags - mutually incident vertex-edge-face triples. In this paper, we classify the regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ into nonorientable surfaces. Such regular embedding of $K_{n,n}$ exists only when $n = 2p_1^{a_1}p_2^{a_2}... p_k^{a_k}$ (a prime decomposition of $n$) and all $p_i \equiv \pm 1 (\mod 8)$. In this case, the number of those regular embeddings of $K_{n,n}$ up to isomorphism is $2^k$.

Let H = (V,E) be a k-uniform hypergraph with a vertex set V and an edge set E. Let V_p be constructed by taking every vertex in V independently with probability p. Let X be the number of edges in E that are contained in V_p. We give a condition that guarantees the concentration of X within a small interval around its mean. The applicability of this result is demonstrated by deriving new sub-Gaussian tails for the number of copies of small complete and complete bipartite graphs in the binomial random graph, extending results of Ruciński and Vu.

The aim of the paper is to formulate a discrete analogue of the claim made by Alvarez-Gaume et al., realizing the partition function of the free fermion on a closed Riemann surface of genus g as a linear combination of 2^{2g} Pfaffians of Dirac operators. Let G=(V,E) be a finite graph embedded in a closed Riemann surface X of genus g, x_e the collection of independent variables associated with each edge e of G (collected in one vector variable x) and S the set of all 2^{2g} Spin-structures on X. We introduce 2^{2g} rotations rot_s and (2|E| times 2|E|) matrices D(s)(x), s in S, of the transitions between the oriented edges of G determined by rotations rot_s. We show that the generating function for the even subsets of edges of G, i.e., the Ising partition function, is a linear combination of the square roots of 2^{2g} Ihara-Selberg functions I(D(s)(x)) also called Feynman functions. By a result of Foata--Zeilberger holds I(D(s)(x))= det(I-D'(s)(x)), where D'(s)(x) is obtained from D(s)(x) by replacing some entries by 0. Thus each Feynman function is computable in polynomial time. We suggest that in the case of critical embedding of a bipartite graph G, the Feynman functions provide suitable discrete analogues for the Pfaffians of discrete Dirac operators.
