Solution of the quasipositivity problem in the braid group
We give a computational algorithm which decides if a braid is quasipositive or not. A braid is quasipositive if it's a product of conjuguates of generators. For this, we use the theory of Garside and the combinatorials properties of the Artin monoid.

Tangling and Braiding the Chessboard Complex
We describe a series of complexes that relate to the braid groups as the matching complexes relate to the symmetric groups. A modified construction applies as well to other complexes based on edge sets in graphs. We show that our constructions will yield Cohen-Macauley complexes provided the underlying complexes are Cohen-Macauley. Finally, we discuss a related series of complexes to provide some positive evidence that the braided Houghton groups, introduced by F. Degenhardt, are a series of groups with linearly increasing finiteness length as are the (unbraided) Houghton groups.

Bose-Mesner Algebras attached to Invertible Jones Pairs

In 1989, Vaughan Jones introduced spin models and showed that they could be used to form link invariants in two different ways--by constructing representations of the braid group, or by constructing partition functions. These spin models were subsequently generalized to so-called 4-weight spin models by Bannai and Bannai; these could be used to construct partition functions, but did not lead to braid group representations in any obvious way. Jaeger showed that spin models were intimately related to certain association schemes. Yamada gave a construction of a symmetric spin model on $4n$ vertices from each 4-weight spin model on $n$ vertices. In this paper we build on recent work with Munemasa to give a different proof to Yamada's result, and we analyse the structure of the association scheme attached to this spin model.

Monodromy of fiber-type arrangements and orbit configuration spaces

We prove similar theorems concerning the structure of bundles involving complements of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements and orbit configuration spaces. These results facilitate analysis of the fundamental groups of these spaces, which may be viewed as generalizations of the Artin pure braid group. In particular, we resolve two disparate conjectures. We show that the Whitehead group of the fundamental group of the complement of a fiber-type arrangement is trivial, as conjectured by Aravinda, Farrell, and Rouchon. For the orbit configuration space corresponding to the natural action of a finite cyclic group on the punctured plane, we determine the structure of the Lie algebra associated to the lower central series of the fundamental group. Our results show that this Lie algebra is isomorphic to the module of primitives in the homology of the loop space of a related orbit configuration space, as conjectured by Xicotencatl.

Relative moduli spaces of complex structures: an example
Let M and N be even-dimensional oriented real manifolds, and $u:M \to N$ be a smooth mapping. A pair of complex structures at M and N is called u-compatible if the mapping u is holomorphic with respect to these structures. The quotient of the space of u-compatible pairs of complex structures by the group of u-equivariant pairs of diffeomorphisms of M and N is called a moduli space of u-equivariant complex structures. The paper contains a description of the fundamental group G of this moduli space in the following case: $N = CP^1, M \subset CP^2$ is a hyperelliptic genus g curve given by the equation $y^2 = Q(x)$ where Q is a generic polynomial of degree 2g+1, and $u(x,y) = y^2$. The group G is a kernel of several (equivalent) actions of the braid-cyclic group $BC_{2g}$ on 2g strands. These are: an action on the set of trees with 2g numbered edges, an action on the set of all splittings of a (4g+2)-gon into numbered nonintersecting quadrangles, and an action on a certain set of subgroups of the free group with 2g generators. $G_{2g} \subset BC_{2g}$ is a subgroup of the index $(2g+1)^{2g-2}$. Key words: Teichmüller spaces, Lyashko-Looijenga map, braid group.
