Enumeration of polyominoes defined in terms of pattern avoidance or convexity constraints
In this thesis, we consider the problem of characterizing and enumerating sets of polyominoes described in terms of some constraints, defined either by convexity or by pattern containment. We are interested in a well known subclass of convex polyominoes, the k-convex polyominoes for which the enumeration according to the semi-perimeter is known only for k=1,2. We obtain, from a recursive decomposition, the generating function of the class of k-convex parallelogram polyominoes, which turns out to be rational. Noting that this generating function can be expressed in terms of the Fibonacci polynomials, we describe a bijection between the class of k-parallelogram polyominoes and the class of planted planar trees having height less than k+3. In the second part of the thesis we examine the notion of pattern avoidance, which has been extensively studied for permutations. We introduce the concept of pattern avoidance in the context of matrices, more precisely permutation matrices and polyomino matrices. We present definitions analogous to those given for permutations and in particular we define polyomino classes, i.e. sets downward closed with respect to the containment relation. So, the study of the old and new properties of the redefined sets of objects has not only become interesting, but it has also suggested the study of the associated poset. In both approaches our results can be used to treat open problems related to polyominoes as well as other combinatorial objects.

We classify all convex polyomino ideals which are linearly related or have a linear resolution. Convex stack polyominoes whose ideals are extremal Gorenstein are also classified. In addition, we characterize, in combinatorial terms, the distributive lattices whose join-meet ideals are extremal Gorenstein or have a linear resolution.
The area generating function for simple-2-column polyominoes with hexagonal cells

Column-convex polygons were first counted by area several decades ago, and the result was found to be a simple, rational, generating function. In this chapter we generalize that result. Let a p-column polyomino be a polyomino whose columns can have 1, 2,..., p connected components. Then column-convex polygons are equivalent to 1-convex polyominoes. The area generating function of even the simplest generalization, namely to 2-column polyominoes, is unlikely to be solvable. We therefore define a class of polyominoes which interpolates between column-convex polygons and 2-column polyominoes. We derive the area generating function of that class, using an extension of an existing algorithm. The growth constant of the new class is greater than the growth constant of column-convex polygons. A rather tight lower bound on the growth constant complements a compelling numerical analysis.

In this paper we determine a closed formula for the number of convex permutominoes of size n. We reach this goal by providing a recursive generation of all convex permutominoes of size n+1 from the objects of size n, according to the ECO method, and then translating this construction into a system of functional equations satisfied by the generating function of convex permutominoes. As a consequence we easily obtain also the enumeration of some classes of convex polyominoes, including stack and directed convex permutominoes.
The number of Z-convex polyominoes

In this paper we consider a restricted class of convex polyominoes that we call Z-convex polyominoes. Z-convex polyominoes are polyominoes such that any two pairs of cells can be connected by a monotone path making at most two turns (like the letter Z). In particular they are convex polyominoes, but they appear to resist standard decompositions. We propose a construction by ``inflation'' that allows to write a system of functional equations for their generating functions. The generating function P(t) of Z-convex polyominoes with respect to the semi-perimeter turns out to be algebraic all the same and surprisingly, like the generating function of convex polyominoes, it can be expressed as a rational function of t and the generating function of Catalan numbers.

Motivated by some binomial coefficients identities encountered in our approach to the enumeration of convex polyominoes, we prove some more general identities of the same type, one of which turns out to be related to a strange evaluation of ${}_3F_2$ of Gessel and Stanton.

Lin and Chang gave a generating function of convex polyominoes with an $m+1$ by $n+1$ minimal bounding rectangle. Gessel showed that their result implies that the number of such polyominoes is $$ \frac{m+n+mn}{m+n}{2m+2n\choose 2m}-\frac{2mn}{m+n}{m+n\choose m}^2. $$ We show that this result can be derived from some binomial coefficients identities related to the generating function of Jacobi polynomials.

Hexagonal polyominoes are polyominoes on the honeycomb lattice. We enumerate the symmetry classes of convex hexagonal polyominoes. Here convexity is to be understood as convexity along the three main column directions. We deduce the generating series of free (i.e. up to reflection and rotation) and of asymmetric convex hexagonal polyominoes, according to area and half-perimeter. We give explicit formulas or implicit functional equations for the generating series, which are convenient for computer algebra.

Parallelogram polyominoes are a subclass of convex polyominoes in the square lattice that has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently congruence classes of convex polyominoes with respect to rotations and reflections have been enumerated by counting orbits under the action of the dihedral group D4, of symmetries of the square, on (translation-type) convex polyominoes. Asymmetric convex polyominoes were also enumerated using Moebius inversion in the lattice of subgroups of D4. Here we extend these results to the subclass of parallelogram polyominos using a subgroup D2 of D4 which acts of this class.

This paper concerns the enumeration of rotation-type and congruence-type convex polyominoes on the square lattice. These can be defined as orbits of the groups C4, of rotations, and D4, of symmetries of the square acting on (translation- type) polyominoes. In virtue of Burnside's Lemma, it is sufficient to enumerate the various symmetry classes (fixed points) of polyominoes defined by the elements of C4 and D4. Using the Temperley--Bousquet-Melou methodology, we solve this problem and provide explicit or recursive formulas for their generating functions according to width, height and area. We also enumerate the class of asymmetric convex polyominoes, using Moebius inversion, and prove that their number is asymptotically equivalent to the number of convex polyominoes, a fact which is empirically evident.
