Exponentially many perfect matchings in cubic graphs
Published in Adv. Math. 227 (2011), 1646-1664 • View PublicationBIB
We show that every cubic bridgeless graph G has at least 2^(|V(G)|/3656) perfect matchings. This confirms an old conjecture of Lovasz and Plummer. This version of the paper uses a different definition of a burl from the journal version of the paper and a different proof of Lemma 18 is given. This simplifies the exposition of our arguments throughout the whole paper.

Star chromatic index
The star chromatic index $χ_s'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of the graph so that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. We obtain a near-linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree $Δ=Δ(G)$. Our best lower bound on $χ_s'$ in terms of $Δ$ is $2Δ(1+o(1))$ valid for complete graphs. We also consider the special case of cubic graphs, for which we show that the star chromatic index lies between 4 and 7 and characterize the graphs attaining the lower bound. The proofs involve a variety of notions from other branches of mathematics and may therefore be of certain independent interest.

Counting perfect matchings of cubic graphs in the geometric dual
Lovász and Plummer conjectured, in the mid 1970's, that every cubic graph G with no cutedge has an exponential in |V(G)| number of perfect matchings. In this work we show that every cubic planar graph G whose geometric dual graph is a stack triangulation has at least 3 times the golden ratio to |V(G)|/72 distinct perfect matchings. Our work builds on a novel approach relating Lovász and Plummer's conjecture and the number of so called groundstates of the widely studied Ising model from statistical physics.

Fractional colorings of cubic graphs with large girth
We show that every (sub)cubic n-vertex graph with sufficiently large girth has fractional chromatic number at most 2.2978 which implies that it contains an independent set of size at least 0.4352n. Our bound on the independence number is valid to random cubic graphs as well as it improves existing lower bounds on the maximum cut in cubic graphs with large girth.

Is the five-flow conjecture almost false?
Published in J. Combin. Theory B 103 (2013) 532-565 • View PublicationBIB
The number of nowhere zero Z_Q flows on a graph G can be shown to be a polynomial in Q, defining the flow polynomial Φ_G(Q). According to Tutte's five-flow conjecture, Φ_G(5) > 0 for any bridgeless G.A conjecture by Welsh that Φ_G(Q) has no real roots for Q \in (4,\infty) was recently disproved by Haggard, Pearce and Royle. These authors conjectured the absence of roots for Q \in [5,\infty). We study the real roots of Φ_G(Q) for a family of non-planar cubic graphs known as generalised Petersen graphs G(m,k). We show that the modified conjecture on real flow roots is also false, by exhibiting infinitely many real flow roots Q>5 within the class G(nk,k). In particular, we compute explicitly the flow polynomial of G(119,7), showing that it has real roots at Q\approx 5.0000197675 and Q\approx 5.1653424423. We moreover prove that the graph families G(6n,6) and G(7n,7) possess real flow roots that accumulate at Q=5 as n\to\infty (in the latter case from above and below); and that Q_c(7)\approx 5.2352605291 is an accumulation point of real zeros of the flow polynomials for G(7n,7) as n\to\infty.

Three-Colorings of Cubic Graphs and Tensor Operators
Penrose's work \cite{8} established a connection between the edge 3-colorings of cubic planar graphs and tensor algebras. We exploit this point of view in order to get algebraic representations of the category of cubic graphs with free ends.

Haggkvist-Hell Graphs: A class of Kneser-colorable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For positive integers n and r we define the Haggkvist-Hell graph, H_{n:r}, to be the graph whose vertices are the ordered pairs (h,T) where T is an r-subset of [n], and h is an element of [n] not in T. Vertices (h_x,T_x) and (h_y,T_y) are adjacent iff h_x \in T_y, h_y \in T_x, and T_x and T_y are disjoint. These triangle-free arc transitive graphs are an extension of the idea of Kneser graphs, and there is a natural homomorphism from the Haggkvist-Hell graph, H_{n:r}, to the corresponding Kneser graph, K_{n:r}. Haggkvist and Hell introduced the r=3 case of these graphs, showing that a cubic graph admits a homomorphism to H_{22:3} if and only if it is triangle-free. Gallucio, Hell, and Nesetril also considered the r=3 case, proving that H_{n:3} can have arbitrarily large chromatic number. In this paper we give the exact values for diameter, girth, and odd girth of all Haggkvist-Hell graphs, and we give bounds for independence, chromatic, and fractional chromatic number. Furthermore, we extend the result of Gallucio et al. to any fixed r \ge 2, and we determine the full automorphism group of H_{n:r}, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group on n elements.

Kempe equivalence of edge-colourings in subcubic and subquartic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that all 4-edge-colourings of a (sub)cubic graph are Kempe equivalent. This resolves a conjecture of the second author. In fact, it is found that the maximum degree Delta=3 is a threshold for Kempe equivalence of (Delta+1)-edge-colourings, as such an equivalence does not hold in general when Delta=4. One extra colour allows a similar result in this latter case however, namely, when Delta<=4 it is shown that all (Delta+2)-edge-colourings are Kempe equivalent.

Patrolling a Street Network is Strongly NP-Complete but in P for Tree Structures
We consider the following problem: Given a finite set of straight line segments in the plane, determine the positions of a minimal number of points on the segments, from which guards can see all segments. This problem can be interpreted as looking for a minimal number of locations of policemen, guards, cameras or other sensors, that can observe a network of streets, corridors, tunnels, tubes, etc. We show that the problem is strongly NP-complete even for a set of segments with a cubic graph structure, but in P for tree structures.

Explicit expanders with cutoff phenomena
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cutoff phenomenon describes a sharp transition in the convergence of an ergodic finite Markov chain to equilibrium. Of particular interest is understanding this convergence for the simple random walk on a bounded-degree expander graph. The first example of a family of bounded-degree graphs where the random walk exhibits cutoff in total-variation was provided only very recently, when the authors showed this for a typical random regular graph. However, no example was known for an explicit (deterministic) family of expanders with this phenomenon. Here we construct a family of cubic expanders where the random walk from a worst case initial position exhibits total-variation cutoff. Variants of this construction give cubic expanders without cutoff, as well as cubic graphs with cutoff at any prescribed time-point.

From the Coxeter graph to the Klein graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the 56-vertex Klein cubic graph $\G'$ can be obtained from the 28-vertex Coxeter cubic graph $\G$ by 'zipping' adequately the squares of the 24 7-cycles of $\G$ endowed with an orientation obtained by considering $\G$ as a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous digraph, where $\mathcal C$ is the collection formed by both the oriented 7-cycles $\vec{C}_7$ and the 2-arcs $\vec{P}_3$ that tightly fasten those $\vec{C}_7$ in $\G$. In the process, it is seen that $\G'$ is a ${\mathcal C}'$-ultrahomogeneous (undirected) graph, where ${\mathcal C}'$ is the collection formed by both the 7-cycles $C_7$ and the 1-paths $P_2$ that tightly fasten those $C_7$ in $\G'$. This yields an embedding of $\G'$ into a 3-torus $T_3$ which forms the Klein map of Coxeter notation $(7,3)_8$. The dual graph of $\G'$ in $T_3$ is the distance-regular Klein quartic graph, with corresponding dual map of Coxeter notation $(3,7)_8$.
A note on dilation coefficient, plane-width, and resolution coefficient of graphs
In this note we study and compare three graph invariants related to the 'compactness' of graph drawing in the plane: the dilation coefficient, defined as the smallest possible quotient between the longest and the shortest edge length; the plane-width, which is the smallest possible quotient between the largest distance between any two points and the shortest length of an edge; and the resolution coefficient, the smallest possible quotient between the longest edge length and the smallest distance between any two points. These three invariants coincide for complete graphs. We show that graphs with large dilation coefficient or plane-width have a vertex with large valence but there exist cubic graphs with arbitrarily large resolution coefficient. Surprisingly enough, the one-dimensional analogues of these three invariants allow us to revisit the three well known graph parameters: the circular chromatic number, the chromatic number, and the bandwidth. We also examine the connection between bounded resolution coefficient and minor-closed graph classes.

Orientable embeddings and orientable cycle double covers of projective-planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a closed 2-cell embedding of a graph each face is homeomorphic to an open disk and is bounded by a cycle in the graph. The Orientable Strong Embedding Conjecture says that every 2-connected graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. This implies both the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture and the Strong Embedding Conjecture. In this paper we prove that every 2-connected projective-planar cubic graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. The three main ingredients of the proof are (1) a surgical method to convert nonorientable embeddings into orientable embeddings; (2) a reduction for 4-cycles for orientable closed 2-cell embeddings, or orientable cycle double covers, of cubic graphs; and (3) a structural result for projective-planar embeddings of cubic graphs. We deduce that every 2-edge-connected projective-planar graph (not necessarily cubic) has an orientable cycle double cover.

Packing 3-vertex paths in claw-free graphs and related topics
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 159 (2011) 112-127 • View PublicationBIB
An L-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G whose every component is a 3-vertex path. Let v(G) be the number of vertices of G and d(G) the domination number of G. A claw is a graph with four vertices and three edges incident to the same vertex. A graph is claw-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a claw. Our results include the following. Let G be a 3-connected claw-free graph, x a vertex in G, e = xy an edge in G, and P a 3-vertex path in G. Then (a1) if v(G) = 0 mod 3, then G has an L-factor containing (avoiding) e, (a2) if v(G) = 1 mod 3, then G - x has an L-factor, (a3) if v(G) = 2 mod 3, then G - {x,y} has an L-factor, (a4) if v(G) = 0 mod 3 and G is either cubic or 4-connected, then G - P has an L-factor, (a5) if G is cubic with v(G) > 5 and E is a set of three edges in G, then G - E has an L-factor if and only if the subgraph induced by E in G is not a claw and not a triangle, (a6) if v(G) = 1 mod 3, then G - {v,e} has an L-factor for every vertex v and every edge e in G, (a7) if v(G) = 1 mod 3, then there exist a 4-vertex path N and a claw Y in G such that G - N and G - Y have L-factors, and (a8) d(G) < v(G)/3 +1 and if in addition G is not a cycle and v(G) = 1 mod 3, then d(G) < v(G)/3. We explore the relations between packing problems of a graph and its line graph to obtain some results on different types of packings. We also discuss relations between L-packing and domination problems as well as between induced L-packings and the Hadwiger conjecture. Keywords: claw-free graph, cubic graph, vertex disjoint packing, edge disjoint packing, 3-vertex factor, 3-vertex packing, path-factor, induced packing, graph domination, graph minor, the Hadwiger conjecture.

Strong embeddings of minimum genus
Published in Discrete Math. 310 (2010) 2595-2599 • View PublicationBIB
A "folklore conjecture, probably due to Tutte" (as described in [P.D. Seymour, Sums of circuits, Graph theory and related topics (Proc. Conf., Univ. Waterloo, 1977), pp. 341-355, Academic Press, 1979]) asserts that every bridgeless cubic graph can be embedded on a surface of its own genus in such a way that the face boundaries are cycles of the graph. In this paper we consider closed 2-cell embeddings of graphs and show that certain (cubic) graphs (of any fixed genus) have closed 2-cell embedding only in surfaces whose genus is very large (proportional to the order of these graphs), thus providing plethora of strong counterexamples to the above conjecture. The main result yielding such counterexamples may be of independent interest.
Short Cycle Covers of Cubic Graphs and Graphs with Minimum Degree Three

The Shortest Cycle Cover Conjecture of Alon and Tarsi asserts that the edges of every bridgeless graph with $m$ edges can be covered by cycles of total length at most $7m/5=1.400m$. We show that every cubic bridgeless graph has a cycle cover of total length at most $34m/21\approx 1.619m$ and every bridgeless graph with minimum degree three has a cycle cover of total length at most $44m/27\approx 1.630m$.

Graphs whose flow polynomials have only integral roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show if the flow polynomial of a bridgeless graph G has only integral roots, then G is the dual graph to a planar chordal graph. We also show that for 3-connected cubic graphs, the same conclusion holds under the weaker hypothesis that it has only real flow roots. Expressed in the language of matroid theory, this result says that the cographic matroids with only integral characteristic roots are the cycle matroids of planar chordal graphs.

Perfect Matchings in Claw-free Cubic Graphs
Published in Electronic J. of Combin., 18 (2011), #P62 (pp. 6) • View PublicationBIB
Lovasz and Plummer conjectured that there exists a fixed positive constant c such that every cubic n-vertex graph with no cutedge has at least 2^(cn) perfect matchings. Their conjecture has been verified for bipartite graphs by Voorhoeve and planar graphs by Chudnovsky and Seymour. We prove that every claw-free cubic n-vertex graph with no cutedge has more than 2^(n/12) perfect matchings, thus verifying the conjecture for claw-free graphs.
