Extremal mixed metric dimension with respect to the cyclomatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph G, the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V(G)U E(G) is called the mixed metric dimension of G, and it is denoted by mdim(G). In [12] it was conjectured that for a graph G with cyclomatic number c(G) it holds that mdim(G) <= L1(G) + 2c(G) where L1(G) is the number of leaves in G. It is already proven that the equality holds for all trees and more generally for graphs with edge-disjoint cycles in which every cycle has precisely one vertex of degree >= 3. In this paper we determine that for every Theta graph G, the mixed metric dimension mdim(G) equals 3 or 4, with 4 being attained if and only if G is a balanced Theta graph. Thus, for balanced Theta graphs the above inequality is also tight. We conclude the paper by further conjecturing that there are no other graphs, besides the ones mentioned here, for which the equality mdim(G) = L1(G) + 2c(G) holds.

Bounds on metric dimensions of graphs with edge disjoint cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph G, cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G) is the (vertex) metric dimension of G. Similarly, the cardinality of such a set is the edge metric dimension of G, if it distinguishes E(G). In this paper these invariants are considered first for unicyclic graphs, and it is shown that the vertex and edge metric dimensions obtain values from two particular consecutive integers, which can be determined from the structure of the graph. In particular, as a consequence, we obtain that these two invariants can differ for at most one for a same unicyclic graph. Next we extend the results to graphs with edge disjoint cycles showing that the two invariants can differ at most by c, where c is the number of cycles in such a graph. We conclude the paper with a conjecture that generalizes the previously mentioned consequences to graphs with prescribed cyclomatic number c by claiming that the difference of the invariant is still bounded by c.

Mixed metric dimension of graphs with edge disjoint cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph G, the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G)[E(G) is called the mixed metric dimension of G. In this paper we first establish the exact value of the mixed metric dimension of a unicycic graph G which is derived from the structure of G. We further consider graphs G with edge disjoint cycles in which a unicyclic restriction Gi is introduced for each cycle Ci: Applying the result for unicyclic graph to each Gi then yields the exact value of the mixed metric dimension of such a graph G. The obtained formulas for the exact value of the mixed metric dimension yield a simple sharp upper bound on the mixed metric dimension, and we conclude the paper conjecturing that the analogous bound holds for general graphs with prescribed cyclomatic number.

No signed graph with the nullity $η(G,σ)=|V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)-1$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G^σ=(G,σ)$ be a signed graph and $A(G,σ)$ be its adjacency matrix. Denote by $m(G)$ the matching number of $G$. Let $η(G,σ)$ be the nullity of $(G,σ)$. He et al. [Bounds for the matching number and cyclomatic number of a signed graph in terms of rank, Linear Algebra Appl. 572 (2019), 273--291] proved that $$|V(G)|-2m(G)-c(G)\leqη(G,σ)\leq |V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G),$$ where $c(G)$ is the dimension of cycle space of $G$. Signed graphs reaching the lower bound or the upper bound are respectively characterized by the same paper. In this paper, we will prove that no signed graphs with nullity $|V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)-1$. We also prove that there are infinite signed graphs with nullity $|V(G)|-2m(G)+2c(G)-s,~(0\leq s\leq3c(G), s\neq1)$ for a given $c(G)$.

On a Conjecture about Degree Deviation Measure of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be an n-vertex graph with m edges. The degree deviation measure of G is defined as s(G)=sum v in V(G)|degG(v)-(2m/n)|, where n and m are the number of vertices and edges of G, respectively. The aim of this paper is to prove the Conjecture 4.2 of [J A de Oliveira, C S Oliveira, C Justel and N M Maia de Abreu, Measures of irregularity of graphs, Pesq. Oper. 33 (3) (2013) 383-398]. The degree deviation measure of chemical graphs under some conditions on the cyclomatic number is also computed.

Bounds for the rank of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
A complex unit gain graph (or $\mathbb{T}$-gain graph) is a triple $Φ=(G, \mathbb{T}, \varphi)$ ($(G, \varphi)$ for short) consisting of a graph $G$ as the underlying graph of $(G, \varphi)$, $\mathbb{T}= \{ z \in C:|z|=1 \} $ is a subgroup of the multiplicative group of all nonzero complex numbers $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$ and a gain function $\varphi: \overrightarrow{E} \rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ such that $\varphi(e_{ij})=\varphi(e_{ji})^{-1}=\overline{\varphi(e_{ji})}$. In this paper, we investigate the relation among the rank, the independence number and the cyclomatic number of a complex unit gain graph $(G, \varphi)$ with order $n$, and prove that $2n-2c(G) \leq r(G, \varphi)+2α(G) \leq 2n$. Where $r(G, \varphi)$, $α(G)$ and $c(G)$ are the rank of the Hermitian adjacency matrix $A(G, \varphi)$, the independence number and the cyclomatic number of $G$, respectively. Furthermore, the properties of the complex unit gain graph that reaching the lower bound are characterized.

The rank of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the matching number
Published • View PublicationBIB
A complex unit gain graph (or ${\mathbb T}$-gain graph) is a triple $Φ=(G, {\mathbb T}, \varphi)$ (or $(G, \varphi)$ for short) consisting of a simple graph $G$, as the underlying graph of $(G, \varphi)$, the set of unit complex numbers $\mathbb{T}= \{ z \in C:|z|=1 \}$ and a gain function $\varphi: \overrightarrow{E} \rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ with the property that $\varphi(e_{i,j})=\varphi(e_{j,i})^{-1}$. In this paper, we prove that $2m(G)-2c(G) \leq r(G, \varphi) \leq 2m(G)+c(G)$, where $r(G, \varphi)$, $m(G)$ and $c(G)$ are the rank of the Hermitian adjacency matrix $H(G, \varphi)$, the matching number and the cyclomatic number of $G$, respectively. Furthermore, the complex unit gain graphs $(G, \mathbb{T}, \varphi)$ with $r(G, \varphi)=2m(G)-2c(G)$ and $r(G, \varphi)=2m(G)+c(G)$ are characterized. These results generalize the corresponding known results about undirected graphs, mixed graphs and signed graphs. Moreover, we show that $2m(G-V_{0}) \leq r(G, \varphi) \leq 2m(G)+b(G)$ holds for any subset $V_0$ of $V(G)$ such that $G-V_0$ is acyclic and $b(G)$ is the minimum integer $|S|$ such that $G-S$ is bipartite for $S \subset V(G)$.

The relation between the independence number and rank of a signed graph
A signed graph $(G, σ)$ is a graph with a sign attached to each of its edges, where $G$ is the underlying graph of $(G, σ)$. Let $c(G)$, $α(G)$ and $r(G, σ)$ be the cyclomatic number, the independence number and the rank of the adjacency matrix of $(G, σ)$, respectively. In this paper, we study the relation among the independence number, the rank and the cyclomatic number of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ with order $n$, and prove that $2n-2c(G) \leq r(G, σ)+2α(G) \leq 2n$. Furthermore, the signed graphs that reaching the lower bound are investigated.

Properties of stepwise irregular graphs
Stepwise irregular (SI) graphs were introduced by Ivan Gutman recently in 2018 and in these graphs the difference between the degrees of any two adjacent vertices is exactly one. In this work, we show the existence of connected bicyclic SI graphs of order 5 and 9 which has been claimed to be non-existent by Gutman. We also show the existence of SI graphs of different order and cyclomatic numbers when there exist a SI graph with a vertex of degree 1 or 2. We give a characterization on the order of the connected tricyclic SI graphs. At the end, we investigate some properties of the SI graphs under elementary graph operations along with the lower and upper bound of the irregularity of SI graphs.

The number of $4$-cycles and the cyclomatic number of a finite simple graph
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. We show that, when $G$ is not bipartite, the number of $4$-cycles contained in $G$ is at most $\binom{m-n+1}{2}$. We further provide a short combinatorial proof of the bound $\binom{m-n+2}{2}$ which holds for bipartite graphs.

Tight upper bound on the maximum anti-forcing numbers of graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Graph Theory (October 17, 2017) dmtcs:3267 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with a perfect matching. Deng and Zhang showed that the maximum anti-forcing number of $G$ is no more than the cyclomatic number. In this paper, we get a novel upper bound on the maximum anti-forcing number of $G$ and investigate the extremal graphs. If $G$ has a perfect matching $M$ whose anti-forcing number attains this upper bound, then we say $G$ is an extremal graph and $M$ is a nice perfect matching. We obtain an equivalent condition for the nice perfect matchings of $G$ and establish a one-to-one correspondence between the nice perfect matchings and the edge-involutions of $G$, which are the automorphisms $α$ of order two such that $v$ and $α(v)$ are adjacent for every vertex $v$. We demonstrate that all extremal graphs can be constructed from $K_2$ by implementing two expansion operations, and $G$ is extremal if and only if one factor in a Cartesian decomposition of $G$ is extremal. As examples, we have that all perfect matchings of the complete graph $K_{2n}$ and the complete bipartite graph $K_{n, n}$ are nice. Also we show that the hypercube $Q_n$, the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ ($n\geq4$) and the enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}$ ($0\leq k\leq n-4$) have exactly $n$, $n+1$ and $n+1$ nice perfect matchings respectively.

Extremal anti-forcing numbers of perfect matchings of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The anti-forcing number of a perfect matching $M$ of a graph $G$ is the minimal number of edges not in $M$ whose removal to make $M$ as a unique perfect matching of the resulting graph. The set of anti-forcing numbers of all perfect matchings of $G$ is the anti-forcing spectrum of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the plane elementary bipartite graph whose minimum anti-forcing number is one. We show that the maximum anti-forcing number of a graph is at most its cyclomatic number. In particular, we characterize the graphs with the maximum anti-forcing number achieving the upper bound, such extremal graphs are a class of plane bipartite graphs. Finally, we determine the anti-forcing spectrum of an even polygonal chain in linear time.

Bounds for the positive or negative inertia index of a graph
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2017, 522: 15-27 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and let $A(G)$ be adjacency matrix of $G$.The positive inertia index (respectively, the negative inertia index) of $G$, denoted by $p(G)$ (respectively, $n(G)$), is defined to be the number of positive eigenvalues (respectively, negative eigenvalues) of $A(G)$. In this paper, we present the bounds for $p(G)$ and $n(G)$ as follows: $$m(G)-c(G)\leq p(G)\leq m(G)+c(G), \ m(G)-c(G)\leq n(G)\leq m(G)+c(G),$$ where $m(G)$ and $c(G)$ are respectively the matching number and the cyclomatic number of $G$. Furthermore, we characterize the graphs which attain the upper bounds or the lower bounds respectively.

Further results on the global cyclicity index of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Being motivated in terms of mathematical concepts from the theory of electrical networks, Klein & Ivanciuc introduced and studied a new graph-theoretic cyclicity index--the global cyclicity index (Graph cyclicity, excess conductance, and resistance deficit, J. Math. Chem. 30 (2001) 271--287). In this paper, by utilizing techniques from graph theory, electrical network theory and real analysis, we obtain some further results on this new cyclicity measure, including the strictly monotone increasing property, some lower and upper bounds, and some Nordhuas-Gaddum-type results. In particular, we establish a relationship between the global cyclicity index $C(G)$ and the cyclomatic number $μ(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges: $$\frac{m}{n-1}μ(G)\leq C(G)\leq \frac{n}{2}μ(G).$$

Rainbow numbers for graphs with cyclomatic number at most two
For a given graph H and n ? 1; let f(n;H) denote the maximum number m for which it is possible to colour the edges of the complete graph Kn with m colours in such a way that each subgraph H in Kn has at least two edges of the same colour. Equivalently, any edge-colouring of Kn with at least rb(n;H) = f(n;H)+1 colours contains a rainbow copy of H: The numbers f(n;H) and rb(Kn;H) are called anti-ramsey numbers and rainbow numbers, respectively. In this paper we will classify the rainbow number for a given graph H with respect to its cyclomatic number. Let H be a graph of order p >= 4 and cyclomatic number v(H) >= 2: Then rb(Kn;H) cannot be bounded from above by a function which is linear in n: If H has cyclomatic number v(H) = 1; then rb(Kn;H) is linear in n: We will compute all rainbow numbers for the bull B; which is the unique graph with 5 vertices and degree sequence (1; 1; 2; 3; 3): Furthermore, we will compute some rainbow numbers for the diamond D = K_4 - e; for K_2;3; and for the house H (complement of P_5).

On a Conjecture of Randić Index and Graph Radius
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Randić index $R(G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the sum of $(d_i d_j)^{-1/2}$ over all edges $v_i v_j$ of $G$, where $d_i$ is the degree of the vertex $v_i$ in $G$. The radius $r(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum graph eccentricity of any graph vertex in $G$. Fajtlowicz(1988) conjectures $R(G) \ge r(G)-1$ for all connected graph $G$. A stronger version, $R(G) \ge r(G)$, is conjectured by Caporossi and Hansen(2000) for all connected graphs except even paths. In this paper, we make use of Harmonic index $H(G)$, which is defined as the sum of $\frac{2}{d_i+d_j}$ over all edges $v_i v_j$ of $G$, to show that $R(G) \ge r(G)-31/105(k-1)$ for any graph with cyclomatic number $k\ge 1$, and $R(T)> r(T)+1/15$ for any tree except even paths. These results improve and strengthen the known results on these conjectures.

The independence polynomial of a graph at -1
Published • View PublicationBIB
If alpha=alpha(G) is the maximum size of an independent set and s_{k} equals the number of stable sets of cardinality k in graph G, then I(G;x)=s_{0}+s_{1}x+...+s_{alpha}x^{alpha} is the independence polynomial of G. In this paper we prove that: 1. I(T;-1) equels either -1 or 0 or 1 for every tree T; 2. I(G;-1)=0 for every connected well-covered graph G of girth > 5, non-isomorphic to C_{7} or K_{2}; 3. the absolute value of I(G;-1) is not greater than 2^nu(G), for every graph G, where nu(G) is its cyclomatic number.
