This note computes a Gröbner basis for the ideal defining a union of Schubert varieties. More precisely, it computes a Gröbner basis for unions of schemes given by northwest rank conditions on the space of all matrices of a fixed size. Schemes given by northwest rank conditions include classical determinantal varieties and matrix Schubert varieties--closures of Schubert varieties lifted from the flag manifold to the space of matrices.
Algebraic matroids with graph symmetry
This paper studies the properties of two kinds of matroids: (a) algebraic matroids and (b) finite and infinite matroids whose ground set have some canonical symmetry, for example row and column symmetry and transposition symmetry.
For (a) algebraic matroids, we expose cryptomorphisms making them accessible to techniques from commutative algebra. This allows us to introduce for each circuit in an algebraic matroid an invariant called circuit polynomial, generalizing the minimal poly- nomial in classical Galois theory, and studying the matroid structure with multivariate methods.
For (b) matroids with symmetries we introduce combinatorial invariants capturing structural properties of the rank function and its limit behavior, and obtain proofs which are purely combinatorial and do not assume algebraicity of the matroid; these imply and generalize known results in some specific cases where the matroid is also algebraic. These results are motivated by, and readily applicable to framework rigidity, low-rank matrix completion and determinantal varieties, which lie in the intersection of (a) and (b) where additional results can be derived. We study the corresponding matroids and their associated invariants, and for selected cases, we characterize the matroidal structure and the circuit polynomials completely.

We study the critical points of monomial functions over an algebraic subset of the probability simplex. The number of critical points on the Zariski closure is a topological invariant of that embedded projective variety, known as its maximum likelihood degree. We present an introduction to this theory and its statistical motivations. Many favorite objects from combinatorial algebraic geometry are featured: toric varieties, A-discriminants, hyperplane arrangements, Grassmannians, and determinantal varieties. Several new results are included, especially on the likelihood correspondence and its bidegree. These notes were written for the second author's lectures at the CIME-CIRM summer course on Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry at Levico Terme in June 2013.

We consider the affine variety ${\mathcal{Z}_{2,2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$Y$") of first order jets over ${\mathcal{Z}_{2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$X$"), where $X$ is the classical determinantal variety given by the vanishing of all $2\times 2$ minors of a generic $m\times n$ matrix. When $2 < m \le n$, this jet scheme $Y$ has two irreducible components: a trivial component, isomorphic to an affine space, and a nontrivial component that is the closure of the jets supported over the smooth locus of $X$. This second component is referred to as the principal component of $Y$; it is, in fact, a cone and can also be regarded as a projective subvariety of $\mathbf{P}^{2mn-1}$. We prove that the degree of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the degree of $X$ and more generally, the Hilbert series of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the Hilbert series of $X$. As an application, we compute the $a$-invariant of the principal component of $Y$ and show that the principal component of $Y$ is Gorenstein if and only if $m=n$.

Given a generic map between flagged vector bundles on a Cohen-Macaulay variety, we construct maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules with linear resolutions supported on the Schubert-type degeneracy loci. The linear resolution is provided by the Schubert complex, which is the main tool introduced and studied in this paper. These complexes extend the Schubert functors of Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz, and were motivated by the fact that Schur complexes resolve maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules supported on determinantal varieties. The resulting formula in K-theory provides a "linear approximation" of the structure sheaf of the degeneracy locus, which can be used to recover a formula due to Fulton.

We show in this paper that the principal component of the first order jet scheme over the classical determinantal variety of m x n matrices of rank at most 1 is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, by showing that an associated Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is shellable.

The space T_{d,n} of n tropically collinear points in a fixed tropical projective space TP^{d-1} is equivalent to the tropicalization of the determinantal variety of matrices of rank at most 2, which consists of real d x n matrices of tropical or Kapranov rank at most 2, modulo projective equivalence of columns. We show that it is equal to the image of the moduli space M_{0,n}(TP^{d-1},1) of n-marked tropical lines in TP^{d-1} under the evaluation map. Thus we derive a natural simplicial fan structure for T_{d,n} using a simplicial fan structure of M_{0,n}(TP^{d-1},1) which coincides with that of the space of phylogenetic trees on d+n taxa. The space of phylogenetic trees has been shown to be shellable by Trappmann and Ziegler. Using a similar method, we show that T_{d,n} is shellable with our simplicial fan structure and compute the homology of the link of the origin. The shellability of T_{d,n} has been conjectured by Develin in 2005.
