Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the sizes of the largest crossings and nestings in colored set partitions likewise have a symmetric joint distribution, we consider several related enumeration problems. We prove that $r$-colored set partitions with no crossing arcs of the same color are in bijection with certain paths in $\NN^r$, generalizing the correspondence between noncrossing (uncolored) set partitions and 2-Motzkin paths. Combining this with recent work of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna affords a proof that the sequence counting noncrossing 2-colored set partitions is P-recursive. We also discuss how our methods extend to several variations of colored set partitions with analogous notions of crossings and nestings.

In this paper, we give bijections between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n$ and the set of standard Young tableaux of shape $(n,n,n)$, and between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n-1$ and the set of shifted standard Young tableaux of shape $(n+1, n, n-1)$ via an intermediate structure of Yamanouchi words. Moreover, we get the enumeration of 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations of even and odd length by presenting bijections between 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations and standard Young tableaux.
Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$.
In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$.
We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.

The q-semicircular distribution is a probability law that interpolates between the Gaussian law and the semicircular law. There is a combinatorial interpretation of its moments in terms of matchings where q follows the number of crossings, whereas for the free cumulants one has to restrict the enumeration to connected matchings. The purpose of this article is to describe combinatorial properties of the classical cumulants. We show that like the free cumulants, they are obtained by an enumeration of connected matchings, the weight being now an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial of a so-called crossing graph. The case q=0 of these cumulants was studied by Lassalle using symmetric functions and hypergeometric series. We show that the underlying combinatorics is explained through the theory of heaps, which is Viennot's geometric interpretation of the Cartier-Foata monoid. This method also gives results for the classical cumulants of the free Poisson law.

Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.
The greedy flip tree of a subword complex
We describe a canonical spanning tree of the ridge graph of a subword complex on a finite Coxeter group. It is based on properties of greedy facets in subword complexes, defined and studied in this paper. Searching this tree yields an enumeration scheme for the facets of the subword complex. This algorithm extends the greedy flip algorithm for pointed pseudotriangulations of points or convex bodies in the plane.

We discuss an elementary, yet unsolved, problem of Niederreiter concerning the enumeration of a class of subspaces of finite dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. A short and self-contained account of some recent progress on this problem is included and some related problems are discussed.

Trapezoidal words are words having at most $n+1$ distinct factors of length $n$ for every $n\ge 0$. They therefore encompass finite Sturmian words. We give combinatorial characterizations of trapezoidal words and exhibit a formula for their enumeration. We then separate trapezoidal words into two disjoint classes: open and closed. A trapezoidal word is closed if it has a factor that occurs only as a prefix and as a suffix; otherwise it is open. We investigate open and closed trapezoidal words, in relation with their special factors. We prove that Sturmian palindromes are closed trapezoidal words and that a closed trapezoidal word is a Sturmian palindrome if and only if its longest repeated prefix is a palindrome. We also define a new class of words, \emph{semicentral words}, and show that they are characterized by the property that they can be written as $uxyu$, for a central word $u$ and two different letters $x,y$. Finally, we investigate the prefixes of the Fibonacci word with respect to the property of being open or closed trapezoidal words, and show that the sequence of open and closed prefixes of the Fibonacci word follows the Fibonacci sequence.

In this paper we consider the enumeration of binary trees avoiding non-contiguous binary tree patterns. We begin by computing closed formulas for the number of trees avoiding a single binary tree pattern with 4 or fewer leaves and compare these results to analogous work for contiguous tree patterns. Next, we give an explicit generating function that counts binary trees avoiding a single non-contiguous tree pattern according to number of leaves. In addition, we enumerate binary trees that simultaneously avoid more than one tree pattern. Finally, we explore connections between pattern-avoiding trees and pattern-avoiding permutations.
Heuristic and exact solutions to the inverse power index problem for small voting bodies

Power indices are mappings that quantify the influence of the members of a voting body on collective decisions a priori. Their nonlinearity and discontinuity makes it difficult to compute inverse images, i.e., to determine a voting system which induces a power distribution as close as possible to a desired one. This paper considers approximations and exact solutions to this inverse problem for the Penrose-Banzhaf index, which are obtained by enumeration and integer linear programming techniques. They are compared to the results of three simple solution heuristics. The heuristics perform well in absolute terms but can be improved upon very considerably in relative terms. The findings complement known asymptotic results for large voting bodies and may improve termination criteria for local search algorithms.
Unbalanced subtrees in binary rooted ordered and un-ordered trees
Binary rooted trees, both in the ordered and in the un-ordered case, are well studied structures in the field of combinatorics. The aim of this work is to study particular patterns in these classes of trees. We consider completely unbalanced subtrees, where unbalancing is measured according to the so-called Colless's index. The size of the biggest unbalanced subtree becomes then a new parameter with respect to which we find several enumerations.
A one-parameter refinement of the Razumov-Stroganov correspondence

We introduce and prove a one-parameter refinement of the Razumov-Stroganov correspondence. This is achieved for fully-packed loop configurations (FPL) on domains which generalize the square domain, and which are endowed with the gyration operation. We consider one given side of the domain, and FPLs such that the only straight-line tile on this side is black. We show that the enumeration vector associated to such FPLs, weighted according to the position of the straight line and refined according to the link pattern for the black boundary points, is the ground state of the scattering matrix, an integrable one-parameter deformation of the O(1) Dense Loop Model Hamiltonian. We show how the original Razumov-Stroganov correspondence, and a conjecture formulated by Di Francesco in 2004, follow from our results.

The refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) of given order having prescribed behavior near one or more of their boundary edges has been the subject of extensive study, starting with the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Conjecture of Mills-Robbins-Rumsey, its proof by Zeilberger, and more recent work on doubly-refined and triply-refined enumeration by several authors. In this paper we extend the previously known results on this problem by deriving explicit enumeration formulas for the "top-left-bottom" (triply-refined) and "top-left-bottom-right" (quadruply-refined) enumerations. The latter case solves the problem of computing the full boundary correlation function for ASMs. The enumeration formulas are proved by deriving new representations, which are of independent interest, for the partition function of the square ice model with domain wall boundary conditions at the "combinatorial point" 2π/3.
Restricted non-separable planar maps and some pattern avoiding permutations

Tutte founded the theory of enumeration of planar maps in a series of papers in the 1960s. Rooted non-separable planar maps are in bijection with West-2-stack-sortable permutations, beta(1,0)-trees introduced by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer in 1997, as well as a family of permutations defined by the avoidance of two four letter patterns. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the number of multiple-edge-free rooted non-separable planar maps. We also use the bijection between rooted non-separable planar maps and a certain class of permutations, found by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrimsson in 2009, to show that the number of 2-faces (excluding the root-face) in a map equals the number of occurrences of a certain mesh pattern in the permutations. We further show that this number is also the number of nodes in the corresponding beta(1,0)-tree that are single children with maximum label. Finally, we give asymptotics for some of our enumerative results.
A doubly-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions

It was shown recently by the authors that, for any n, there is equality between the distributions of certain triplets of statistics on nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) and descending plane partitions (DPPs) with each part at most n. The statistics for an ASM A are the number of generalized inversions in A, the number of -1's in A and the number of 0's to the left of the 1 in the first row of A, and the respective statistics for a DPP D are the number of nonspecial parts in D, the number of special parts in D and the number of n's in D. Here, the result is generalized to include a fourth statistic for each type of object, where this is the number of 0's to the right of the 1 in the last row of an ASM, and the number of (n-1)'s plus the number of rows of length n-1 in a DPP. This generalization is proved using the known equality of the three-statistic generating functions, together with relations which express each four-statistic generating function in terms of its three-statistic counterpart. These relations are obtained by applying the Desnanot-Jacobi identity to determinantal expressions for the generating functions, where the determinants arise from standard methods involving the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions for ASMs, and nonintersecting lattice paths for DPPs.

The Eynard-Orantin recursion formula provides an effective tool for certain enumeration problems in geometry. The formula requires a spectral curve and the recursion kernel. We present a uniform construction of the spectral curve and the recursion kernel from the unstable geometries of the original counting problem. We examine this construction using four concrete examples: Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants (or higher-genus analogue of the Catalan numbers), the intersection numbers of tautological cotangent classes on the moduli stack of stable pointed curves, single Hurwitz numbers, and the stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of the complex projective line.

We study pairs and m--tuples of compositions of a positive integer n with parts restricted to a subset P of positive integers. We obtain some exact enumeration results for the number of tuples of such compositions having the same number of parts. Under the uniform probability model, we obtain the asymptotics for the probability that two or, more generally, m randomly and independently chosen compositions of n have the same number of parts. For a large class of compositions, we show how a nice interplay between complex analysis and probability theory allows to get full asymptotics for this probability. Our results extend an earlier work of Bóna and Knopfmacher. While we restrict our attention to compositions, our approach is also of interest for tuples of other combinatorial structures having the same number of parts.
Euler flag enumeration of Whitney stratified spaces

The flag vector contains all the face incidence data of a polytope, and in the poset setting, the chain enumerative data. It is a classical result due to Bayer and Klapper that for face lattices of polytopes, and more generally, Eulerian graded posets, the flag vector can be written as a cd-index, a non-commutative polynomial which removes all the linear redundancies among the flag vector entries. This result holds for regular CW complexes.
We relax the regularity condition to show the cd-index exists for Whitney stratified manifolds by extending the notion of a graded poset to that of a quasi-graded poset. This is a poset endowed with an order-preserving rank function and a weighted zeta function. This allows us to generalize the classical notion of Eulerianness, and obtain a cd-index in the quasi-graded poset arena. We also extend the semi-suspension operation to that of embedding a complex in the boundary of a higher dimensional ball and study the simplicial shelling components.
Combinatorial Constructions for Sifting Primes and Enumerating the Rationals
We describe a combinatorial approach for investigating properties of rational numbers. The overall approach rests on structural bijections between rational numbers and familiar combinatorial objects, namely rooted trees. We emphasize that such mappings achieve much more than enumeration of rooted trees. We discuss two related structural bijections. The first corresponds to a bijective map between integers and rooted trees. The first bijection also suggests a new algorithm for sifting primes. The second bijection extends the first one in order to map rational numbers to a family of rooted trees. The second bijection suggests a new combinatorial construction for generating reduced rational numbers, thereby producing refinements of the output of the Wilf-Calkin[1] Algorithm.
Enumeration of k-Exceedance Lattice Paths with an Application to Comparing Chains of Order Statistics
We enumerate the number of monotonic lattice paths starting at $(0,0)$ and terminating at $(m,n)$ in which $l$ of the first $k$ steps lie below the line $y=x\ (0\leq k\leq m\leq n)$. These closed formulas consist of terms which are a product Catalan numbers, ballot numbers and binomial coefficients. We then apply the combinatorial formulas to failure analysis by deriving a probability distribution that compares the performance of a $k$-out-of-$m$ system to a $k$-out-of-$n$ system of continuous, independent, and identically distributed random variables. Lastly, we provide asymptotics in a few special cases of $k,m,n$ and leave others as conjecture.
