On the Activities and Partitions of the Vertex Subsets of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Crapo introduced a construction of interval partitions of the Boolean lattice for sets equipped with matroid structure. This construction, in the context of graphic matroids, is related to the notion of edge activities introduced by Tutte. This implies that each spanning subgraph of a connected graph can be constructed from edges of exactly one spanning tree by deleting a unique subset of internally active edges and adding a unique subset of externally active edges. Since the family of vertex independent sets does not give rise to a matroid structure we can not apply Crapo's construction on the vertex set when using the family of independent sets as generating sets. In this paper, we introduce the concept of vertex activities to tackle the problem of generating interval partitions of the Boolean lattice of the vertex set. We show how to generate a cover, present some properties related to vertex activities of some special maximal independent sets and consider some special graphs. Finally, we will show that level labellings in pruned graphs always generate a partition.

The Tutte q-Polynomial
$q$-Matroids are defined on complemented modular support lattices. Minors of length 2 are of four types as in a "classical" matroid. Tutte polynomials $τ(x,y)$ of matroids are calculated either by recursion over deletion/contraction of single elements, by an enumeration of bases with respect to internal/external activities, or by substitution $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ in their rank generating functions $ρ(x,y)$. The $q$-analogue of the passage from a Tutte polynomial to its corresponding RGF is straight-forward, but the analogue of the reverse process $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ is more delicate. For matroids $M(S)$ on a set $S$, and relative to any linear order on the points, the concept of internal/external activity of a point relative to a basis gives rise to a partition of the underlying Boolean algebra $B(S)$ into a set of "prime-free" (or "structureless") minors, such minors being direct sums of loops and isthmi (coloops), with one such prime-free minor for each basis. What usually goes unnoticed is that each prime-free minor has a unique clopen flat. The latter property carries over to $q$-matroids, but each prime-free minor will contain many bases. So internal and external activity in $q$-matroids must be defined not for points relative to bases, but rather for coverings in the underlying complemented modular lattice. Following lattice paths from arbitrary subspaces $A$ along active coverings (downward for internally active, upward for externally active) will lead to the unique clopen subspace in the prime-free minor containing the subspace $A$. There are a number of interesting questions concerning $q$-matroids that remain unsolved.

Spanning forests in regular planar maps
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 135 (2015) 1-59 • View Publication • BIB
We address the enumeration of p-valent planar maps equipped with a spanning forest, with a weight z per face and a weight u per connected component of the forest. Equivalently, we count p-valent maps equipped with a spanning tree, with a weight z per face and a weight μ:=u+1 per internally active edge, in the sense of Tutte; or the (dual) p-angulations equipped with a recurrent sandpile configuration, with a weight z per vertex and a variable μ:=u+1 that keeps track of the level of the configuration. This enumeration problem also corresponds to the limit q -> 0 of the q-state Potts model on p-angulations. Our approach is purely combinatorial. The associated generating function, denoted F(z,u), is expressed in terms of a pair of series defined implicitly by a system involving doubly hypergeometric series. We derive from this system that F(z,u) is differentially algebraic in z, that is, satisfies a differential equation in z with polynomial coefficients in z and u. This has recently been proved to hold for the more general Potts model on 3-valent maps, but via a much more involved and less combinatorial proof. For u >= -1, we study the singularities of F(z,u) and the corresponding asymptotic behaviour of its n-th coefficient. For u>0, we find the standard asymptotic behaviour of planar maps, with a subexponential term in n^{-5/2}. At u=0 we witness a phase transition with a term n^{-3}. When u\in[-1,0), we obtain an extremely unusual behaviour in n^{-3}(\ln n)^{-2}. To our knowledge, this is a new "universality class" for planar maps.

From spanning forests to edge subsets
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea 7 (2014) 141-151 • View Publication • BIB
We give some insight into Tutte's definition of internally and externally active edges for spanning forests. Namely we prove, that every edge subset can be constructed from the edges of exactly one spanning forest by deleting a unique subset of the internally active edges and adding a unique subset of the externally active edges.
