A point-variety incidence theorem over finite fields, and its applications
Incidence problems between geometric objects is a key area of focus in the field of discrete geometry. Among them, the study of incidence problems over finite fields have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years. In this paper, by characterizing the singular values and singular vectors of the corresponding incidence matrix through group algebras, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between points and varieties of a certain form over finite fields. Our result leads to a new incidence bound for points and flats in finite geometries, which improves previous results for certain parameter regimes. As another application of our point-variety incidence bound, we extend a result on pinned distance problems by Phuong, Thang, and Vinh, and independently by Cilleruelo, Iosevich, Lund, Roche-Newton, and Rudnev, under a weaker condition.

A q-analogue of graph independence polynomials with a group-theoretic interpretation
We define totally-isotropic polynomials of alternating matrix spaces over finite fields, by analogy with independence polynomials of graphs. Our main result shows that totally-isotropic polynomials of graphical alternating matrix spaces give rise to a natural q-analogue of graph independence polynomials. For p-groups of class 2 and exponent p, this family of polynomials over fields of order p can be naturally interpreted as enumerating their abelian subgroups containing the commutator subgroup according to the orders. With this interpretation, our main result has implications to graphical groups over finite fields, in the same spirit as the results in (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2022) by Rossmann, who studied enumerating conjugacy classes of graphical groups over finite fields.
Congruence Classes of Simplex Structures in Finite Field Vector Spaces
We study a generalization of the Erdős-Falconer distance problem over finite fields. For a graph $G$, two embeddings $p, p': V(G) \to \mathbb{F}_q^d$ of a graph $G$ are congruent if for all edges $(v_i, v_j)$ of $G$ we have that $||p(v_i) - p(v_j)|| = ||p'(v_i) - p'(v_j)||$. What is the infimum of $s$ such that for any subset $E\subset \mathbb{F}_q^d$ with $|E| \gtrsim q^s$, $E$ contains a positive proportion of congruence classes of $G$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$? Bennett et al. and McDonald used group action methods to prove results in the case of $k$-simplices. The work of Iosevich, Jardine, and McDonald as well as that of Bright et al. have proved results in the case of trees and trees of simplices, utilizing the inductive nature of these graphs. Recently, Aksoy, Iosevich, and McDonald combined these two approaches to obtain nontrivial bounds on the "bowtie" graph, two triangles joined at a vertex. Their proof relies on an application of the Hadamard three-lines theorem to pass to a different graph. We develop novel geometric techniques called branch shifting and simplex unbalancing to reduce our analysis of trees of simplices to a much smaller class of simplex structures. This allows us to establish a framework that handles a wide class of graphs exhibiting a combination of rigid and loose behavior. In $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, this approach gives new nontrivial bounds on chains and trees of simplices. In $\mathbb{F}_q^d$, we improve on the results of Bright et al. in many cases and generalize their work to a wider class of simplex trees. We discuss partial progress on how this framework can be extended to more general simplex structures, such as cycles of simplices and structures of simplices glued together along an edge or a face.

Most $q$-matroids are not representable
A $q$-matroid is the analogue of a matroid which arises by replacing the finite ground set of a matroid with a finite-dimensional vector space over a finite field. These $q$-matroids are motivated by coding theory as the representable $q$-matroids are the ones that stem from rank-metric codes. In this note, we establish a $q$-analogue of Nelson's theorem in matroid theory by proving that asymptotically almost all $q$-matroids are not representable. This answers a question about representable $q$-matroids by Jurrius and Pellikaan strongly in the negative.

Interpolation of point configurations in the discrete plane
Defining distances over finite fields formally by $||x-y||:=(x_1-y_1)^2+\cdots + (x_d-y_d)^2$ for $x,y\in \mathbb{F}_q^d$, distance problems naturally arise in analogy to those studied by Erdős and Falconer in Euclidean space. Given a graph $G$ and a set $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$, let $Δ_G(E)$ be the generalized distance set corresponding to $G$. In the case when $G$ is the complete graph on $k+1$ vertices, Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan, and Rudnev showed that when $|E|\geq q^{d-\frac{d-1}{k+1}}$, it follows that $|Δ_G(E)|\geq cq^{\binom{k+1}{2}}$. In the case when $k=d=2$, the threshold can be improved to $|E|\geq q^{\frac{8}{5}}$. Moreover, Jardine, Iosevich, and McDonald showed that in the case when $G$ is a tree with $k+1$ vertices, then whenever $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^d$, $d\geq 2$ satisfies $|E|\geq C_kq^{\frac{d+1}{2}}$, it follows that $Δ_G(E)=\mathbb{F}_q^k$. In this paper, we present a technique which enables us to study certain graphs with both rigid and non-rigid components. In particular, we show that for $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$, $q=p^n$, $n$ odd, $p\equiv 3 \ \text{mod} \ 4$, and $G$ is the graph consisting of two triangles joined at a vertex, then whenever $|E|\geq q^{\frac{12}{7}}$, it follows that $|Δ_G(E)|\geq cq^6$.

Local permutation polynomials and their companions
Gutierrez and Urroz (2023) have proposed a family of local permutation polynomials over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic based on a class of symmetric subgroups without fixed points called $e$-Klenian groups. The polynomials within this family are referred to as $e$-Klenian polynomials. Furthermore, they have shown the existence of companions for the $e$-Klenian polynomials when the characteristic of the finite field is odd. Here, we present three new families of local permutation polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic. We also consider the problem of the existence of companions for the $e$-Klenian polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic. More precisely, we prove that over finite fields of even characteristic, the $0$-Klenian polynomials do not have any companions. However, for $e \geq 1$, we explicitly provide a companion for the $e$-Klenian polynomials. Moreover, we provide a companion for each of the new families of local permutation polynomials that we introduce.

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz Techniques
We present different techniques for applying Combinatorial Nullstellensatz to polynomials over finite fields. For examples, we generalize theorems from Noga Alon's paper on the subject, and present a few of our own.

On a Problem of Ramsey Theory
Published in German International Journal of Modern Science 86 (2024) pp. 15-17 • View PublicationBIB
In 1955, Greenwood and Gleason showed that the Ramsey number R(3, 3, 3) = 17 by constructing an edge-chromatic graph on 16 vertices in three colors with no triangles. Their technique employed finite fields. This same result was obtained later by using another technique. In this article, we examine the complete graph on 17 vertices, K17, which can be represented as a regular polygon of 17 sides with all its diagonals. We color each edge of K17 with one of the three colors, blue, red or yellow. The graph thus obtained is called complete trichromatic graph K17^(3) (the superscript determines the number of colors). A triangle contained in graph K17^(3) with edges colored with one and only one color is called monochromatic. It has been shown that for any coloring of the K17^(3) edges, K17^(3) contains at least one monochromatic triangle. This article examines the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic triangles with the same color contained in K17^(3).

A strengthening of McConnel's theorem on permutations over finite fields
Published in Canad. Math. Bull. 68 (2025), no. 1, 213-218 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be a prime, $q=p^n$, and $D \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$. A celebrated result of McConnel states that if $D$ is a proper subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^*$, and $f:\mathbb{F}_q \to \mathbb{F}_q$ is a function such that $(f(x)-f(y))/(x-y) \in D$ whenever $x \neq y$, then $f(x)$ necessarily has the form $ax^{p^j}+b$. In this notes, we give a sufficient condition on $D$ to obtain the same conclusion on $f$. In particular, we show that McConnel's theorem extends if $D$ has small doubling.

On cover-free families of finite vector spaces
There is a large literature on cover-free families of finite sets, because of their many applications in combinatorial group testing, cryptographic and communications. This work studies the generalization of cover-free families from sets to finite vector spaces. Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and let $\left[V\atop k\right]_q$ denote the family of all $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$. A family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \left[V\atop k\right]_q$ is called cover-free if there are no three distinct subspaces $F_{0}, F_{1}, F_{2}\in \mathcal{F}$ such that $F_{0}\leq (F_{0}\cap F_{1})+(F_{0}\cap F_{2})$. A family $\mathcal{H}\subseteq \left[V\atop k\right]_q$ is called a $q$-Steiner system $S_{q}(t, k, n)$ if for every $T\in \left[V\atop t\right]_q$, there is exactly one $H\in \mathcal{H}$ such that $T\leq H$. In this paper we investigate cover-free families in the vector space $V$. Firstly, we determine the maximum size of a cover-free family in $\left[V\atop k\right]_q$. Secondly, we characterize the structures of all maximum cover-free families which are closely related to $q$-Steiner systems.

Weight Enumerators of codes over $\mathbb{F}_2$ and over $\mathbb{Z}_4$
Published in Interdisciplinary Information Sciences J-STAGE Advance published October 8, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Weight enumerators are important tools for deciphering the algebraic structure of the related code spaces and for understanding group actions on these spaces. Our study focuses on symmetrized weight enumerators of pairs of Type II codes over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ and the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$. These pairs have been examined as invariants for a specified group. In particular, we concentrate on the scenarios where the space of the invariant ring is of degree 8 and 16. Our findings show that in certain situations, the ring produced by the symmetrized weight enumerators precisely matches with the invariant ring of the designated group. This coincidence points to a profound relationship between the invariant ring's structure and the algebraic characteristics of the weight enumerators.

Vector spaces over finite commutative rings
Vector spaces over finite fields and Anzahl formulas of subspaces were studied by Wan (Geometry of Classical Groups over Finite Fields, Science Press, 2002). As a generalization, we study vector spaces and singular linear spaces over commutative rings, and obtain some Anzahl formulas and dimensional formula for subspaces. Moreover, we discuss arcs and caps by using these subspaces.

$L^p$ averages of the Fourier transform in finite fields
The Fourier transform plays a central role in many geometric and combinatorial problems cast in vector spaces over finite fields. If a set admits optimal $L^\infty$ bounds on its Fourier transform (that is, it is a Salem set), then it can often be analysed more easily. However, in many cases obtaining good \emph{uniform} bounds is not possible, even if `most' points admit good pointwise bounds. Motivated by this, we propose a framework where one systematically studies the $L^p$ averages of the Fourier transform and keeps track of how good the $L^p$ bounds are as a function of $p$. This captures more nuanced information about a set than, for example, asking whether it is Salem or not. We explore this idea by considering several examples and find that a rich theory emerges. Further, we provide various applications of this approach; including to sumset type problems, the finite fields distance conjecture, and the problem of counting $k$-simplices inside a given set. Our typical application is of the form: if a set admits good $L^p$ bounds on its Fourier transform, then we are able to make strong geometric conclusions.

Anzahl theorems for trivially intersecting subspaces generating a non-singular subspace I: symplectic and hermitian forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate forms of symplectic and hermitian type defined on a vector space: given a subspace $π$, we find the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $π$ and span a non-singular subspace with $π$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $π$ is non-singular were first studied in ``Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)'', which was later improved in ``Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)'' and generalised in ``Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)''. In this paper, we derive explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds.

Some orbits of a two-vertex stabilizer in a Grassmann graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote a finite field with $q$ elements. Let $n,k$ denote integers with $n>2k\geq 6$. Let $V$ denote a vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ that has dimension $n$. The vertex set of the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,k)$ consists of the $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$. Two vertices of $J_q(n,k)$ are adjacent whenever their intersection has dimension $k-1$. Let $\partial$ denote the path-length distance function of $J_q(n,k)$. Pick vertices $x,y$ of $J_q(n,k)$ such that $1<\partial(x,y)<k$. Let $\text{Stab}(x,y)$ denote the subgroup of $GL(V)$ that stabilizes both $x$ and $y$. In this paper, we investigate the orbits of $\text{Stab}(x,y)$ acting on the local graph $Γ(x)$. We show that there are five orbits. By construction, these five orbits give an equitable partition of $Γ(x)$; we find the corresponding structure constants. In order to describe the five orbits more deeply, we bring in a Euclidean representation of $J_q(n,k)$ associated with the second largest eigenvalue of $J_q(n,k)$. By construction, for each orbit its characteristic vector is represented by a vector in the associated Euclidean space. We compute many inner products and linear dependencies involving the five representing vectors.

A degree bound for planar functions
Published in Comb. Theory 5(3): #17 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Using Stickelberger's theorem on Gauss sums, we show that if $F$ is a planar function on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, then for all non-zero functions $G : \mathbb{F}_q \to \mathbb{F}_q$, we have \begin{equation*} d_{\mathsf{alg}}(G \circ F) - d_{\mathsf{alg}}(G) \le \frac{n(p-1)}{2}, \end{equation*} where $q = p^n$ with $p$ a prime and $n$ a positive integer, and $d_{\mathsf{alg}}(F)$ is the algebraic degree of $F$, i.e., the maximum degree of the corresponding system of $n$ lowest-degree interpolating polynomials for $F$ considered as a function on $\mathbb{F}_p^n$. This bound implies the (known) classification of planar polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and planar monomials over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$. As a new result, using the same degree bound, we complete the classification of planar monomials for all $n = \smash{2^k}$ with $p>5$ and $k$ a non-negative integer. Finally, we state a conjecture on the sum of the base-$p$ digits of integers modulo $q-1$ that implies the complete classification of planar monomials over finite fields of characteristic $p>5$.
On a classification of planar functions in characteristic three
Planar functions are functions over a finite field that have optimal combinatorial properties and they have applications in several branches of mathematics, including algebra, projective geometry and cryptography. There are two relevant equivalence relations for planar functions, that are isotopic equivalence and CCZ-equivalence. Classification of planar functions is performed via CCZ-equivalence which arises from cryptographic applications. In the case of quadratic planar functions, isotopic equivalence, coming from connections to commutative semifields, is more general than CCZ-equivalence and isotopic transformations can be considered as a construction method providing up to two CCZ-inequivalent mappings. In this paper, we first survey known infinite classes and sporadic cases of planar functions up to CCZ-equivalence, aiming to exclude equivalent cases and to identify those with the potential to provide additional functions via isotopic equivalence. In particular, for fields of order $3^n$ with $n\le 11$, we completely resolve if and when isotopic equivalence provides different CCZ-classes for all currently known planar functions. Further, we perform an extensive computational investigation on some of these fields and find seven new sporadic planar functions over $\mathbb{F}_{3^6}$ and two over $\mathbb{F}_{3^9}$. Finally, we give new simple quadrinomial representatives for the Dickson family of planar functions.

Revisiting sums and products in countable and finite fields
Published in Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys. 46 (2026) 543-574 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a polynomial ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field $K$. As an application, we deduce--via a variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle--that for fields of characteristic zero, any "large" set $E\subset K$ contains "many" patterns of the form $\{p(x)+y,xy\}$, for every non-constant polynomial $p(x)\in K[x]$. Our methods are flexible enough that they allow us to recover analogous density results in the setting of finite fields and, with the aid of a new finitistic variant of Bergelson's "colouring trick", show that for $r\in \mathbb{N}$ fixed, any $r-$colouring of a large enough finite field will contain monochromatic patterns of the form $\{x,p(x)+y,xy\}$. In a different direction, we obtain a double ergodic theorem for actions of the affine group of a countable field. An adaptation of the argument for affine actions of finite fields leads to a generalisation of a theorem of Shkredov. Finally, to highlight the utility of the aforementioned finitistic "colouring trick", we provide a conditional, elementary generalisation of Green and Sanders' $\{x,y,x+y,xy\}$ theorem.

On an entropic analogue of additive energy
Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.
