A rigidity theory is developed for frameworks in a metric space with two types of distance constraints. Mixed sparsity graph characterisations are obtained for the infinitesimal and continuous rigidity of completely regular bar-joint frameworks in a variety of such contexts. The main results are combinatorial characterisations for (i) frameworks restricted to surfaces with both Euclidean and geodesic distance constraints, (ii) frameworks in the plane with Euclidean and non-Euclidean distance constraints, and (iii) direction-length frameworks in the non-Euclidean plane.
A combinatorial method for connecting BHV spaces representing different numbers of taxa
The phylogenetic tree space introduced by Billera, Holmes, and Vogtmann (BHV tree space) is a CAT(0) continuous space that represents trees with edge weights with an intrinsic geodesic distance measure. The geodesic distance measure unique to BHV tree space is well known to be computable in polynomial time, which makes it a potentially powerful tool for optimization problems in phylogenetics and phylogenomics. Specifically, there is significant interest in comparing and combining phylogenetic trees. For example, BHV tree space has been shown to be potentially useful in tree summary and consensus methods, which require combining trees with different number of leaves. Yet an open problem is to transition between BHV tree spaces of different maximal dimension, where each maximal dimension corresponds to the complete set of edge-weighted trees with a fixed number of leaves. We show a combinatorial method to transition between copies of BHV tree spaces in which trees with different numbers of taxa can be studied, derived from its topological structure and geometric properties. This method removes obstacles for embedding problems such as supertree and consensus methods in the BHV treespace framework.
The k-metric dimension of graphs: a general approach
Let $(X,d)$ be a metric space. A set $S\subseteq X$ is said to be a $k$-metric generator for $X$ if and only if for any pair of different points $u,v\in X$, there exist at least $k$ points $w_1,w_2, \ldots w_k\in S$ such that $d(u,w_i)\ne d(v,w_i),\; \mbox{\rm for all}\; i\in \{1, \ldots k\}.$ Let $\mathcal{R}_k(X)$ be the set of metric generators for $X$. The $k$-metric dimension $\dim_k(X)$ of $(X,d)$ is defined as $$\dim_k(X)=\inf\{|S|:\, S\in \mathcal{R}_k(X)\}.$$ Here, we discuss the $k$-metric dimension of $(V,d_t)$, where $V$ is the set of vertices of a simple graph $G$ and the metric $d_t:V\times V\rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ is defined by $d_t(x,y)=\min\{d(x,y),t\}$ from the geodesic distance $d$ in $G$ and a positive integer $t$. The case $t\ge D(G)$, where $D(G)$ denotes the diameter of $G$, corresponds to the original theory of $k$-metric dimension and the case $t=2$ corresponds to the theory of $k$-adjacency dimension. Furthermore, this approach allows us to extend the theory of $k$-metric dimension to the general case of non-necessarily connected graphs.

Let ${\cal G}$ be a graph family defined on a common vertex set $V$ and let $d$ be a distance defined on every graph $G\in {\cal G}$. A set $S\subset V$ is said to be a simultaneous metric generator for ${\cal G}$ if for every $G\in {\cal G}$ and every pair of different vertices $u,v\in V$ there exists $s\in S$ such that $d(s,u)\ne d(s,v)$. The simultaneous metric dimension of ${\cal G}$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that there is a simultaneous metric generator for ${\cal G}$ of cardinality $k$. We study the simultaneous metric dimension of families composed by corona product graphs. Specifically, we focus on the case of two particular distances defined on every $G\in {\cal G}$, namely, the geodesic distance $d_G$ and the distance $d_{G,2}:V\times V\rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ defined as $d_{G,2}(x,y)=\min\{d_{G}(x,y),2\}$.
On minimum spanning tree-like metric spaces

We attempt to shed new light on the notion of 'tree-like' metric spaces by focusing on an approach that does not use the four-point condition. Our key question is: Given metric space $M$ on $n$ points, when does a fully labelled positive-weighted tree $T$ exist on the same $n$ vertices that precisely realises $M$ using its shortest path metric? We prove that if a spanning tree representation, $T$, of $M$ exists, then it is isomorphic to the unique minimum spanning tree in the weighted complete graph associated with $M$, and we introduce a fourth-point condition that is necessary and sufficient to ensure the existence of $T$ whenever each distance in $M$ is unique. In other words, a finite median graph, in which each geodesic distance is distinct, is simply a tree. Provided that the tie-breaking assumption holds, the fourth-point condition serves as a criterion for measuring the goodness-of-fit of the minimum spanning tree to $M$, i.e., the spanning tree-likeness of $M$. It is also possible to evaluate the spanning path-likeness of $M$. These quantities can be measured in $O(n^4)$ and $O(n^3)$ time, respectively.

Let ${\mathcal G}$ be a graph family defined on a common (labeled) vertex set $V$. A set $S\subseteq V$ is said to be a simultaneous metric generator for ${\cal G}$ if for every $G\in {\cal G}$ and every pair of different vertices $u,v\in V$ there exists $s\in S$ such that $d_{G}(s,u)\ne d_{G}(s,v)$, where $d_{G}$ denotes the geodesic distance. A simultaneous adjacency generator for ${\cal G}$ is a simultaneous metric generator under the metric $d_{G,2}(x,y)=\min\{d_{G}(x,y),2\}$. A minimum cardinality simultaneous metric (adjacency) generator for ${\cal G}$ is a simultaneous metric (adjacency) basis, and its cardinality the simultaneous metric (adjacency) dimension of ${\cal G}$. Based on the simultaneous adjacency dimension, we study the simultaneous metric dimension of families composed by lexicographic product graphs.

We obtain an optimal deviation from the mean upper bound \begin{equation} D(x)\=\sup_{f\in \F}μ\{f-\E_μ f\geq x\},\qquad\ \text{for}\ x\in\R\label{abstr} \end{equation} where $\F$ is the class of the integrable, Lipschitz functions on probability metric (product) spaces. As corollaries we get exact solutions of $\eqref{abstr}$ for Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$ with a geodesic distance and a normalized Haar measure, for $\R^n$ equipped with a Gaussian measure and for the multidimensional cube, rectangle, torus or Diamond graph equipped with uniform measure and Hamming distance. We also prove that in general probability metric spaces the $\sup$ in $\eqref{abstr}$ is achieved on a family of distance functions.

We present two algorithms for computing the geodesic distance between phylogenetic trees in tree space, as introduced by Billera, Holmes, and Vogtmann (2001). We show that the possible combinatorial types of shortest paths between two trees can be compactly represented by a partially ordered set. We calculate the shortest distance along each candidate path by converting the problem into one of finding the shortest path through a certain region of Euclidean space. In particular, we show there is a linear time algorithm for finding the shortest path between a point in the all positive orthant and a point in the all negative orthant of R^k contained in the subspace of R^k consisting of all orthants with the first i coordinates non-positive and the remaining coordinates non-negative for 0 <= i <= k.

We investigate the integrability of the discrete non-linear equation governing the dependence on geodesic distance of planar graphs with inner vertices of even valences. This equation follows from a bijection between graphs and blossom trees and is expressed in terms of generating functions for random walks. We construct explicitly an infinite set of conserved quantities for this equation, also involving suitable combinations of random walk generating functions. The proof of their conservation, i.e. their eventual independence on the geodesic distance, relies on the connection between random walks and heaps of dimers. The values of the conserved quantities are identified with generating functions for graphs with fixed numbers of external legs. Alternative equivalent choices for the set of conserved quantities are also discussed and some applications are presented.

We discuss the enumeration of planar graphs using bijections with suitably decorated trees, which allow for keeping track of the geodesic distances between faces of the graph. The corresponding generating functions obey non-linear recursion relations on the geodesic distance. These are solved by use of stationary multi-soliton tau-functions of suitable reductions of the KP hierarchy. We obtain a unified formulation of the (multi-) critical continuum limit describing large graphs with marked points at large geodesic distances, and obtain integrable differential equations for the corresponding scaling functions. This provides a continuum formulation of two-dimensional quantum gravity, in terms of the geodesic distance.

We extend Schaeffer's bijection between rooted quadrangulations and well-labeled trees to the general case of Eulerian planar maps with prescribed face valences, to obtain a bijection with a new class of labeled trees, which we call mobiles. Our bijection covers all the classes of maps previously enumerated by either the two-matrix model used by physicists or by the bijection with blossom trees used by combinatorists. Our bijection reduces the enumeration of maps to that, much simpler, of mobiles and moreover keeps track of the geodesic distance within the initial maps via the mobiles' labels. Generating functions for mobiles are shown to obey systems of algebraic recursion relations.

We study the statistics of edges and vertices in the vicinity of a reference vertex (origin) within random planar quadrangulations and Eulerian triangulations. Exact generating functions are obtained for theses graphs with fixed numbers of edges and vertices at given geodesic distances from the origin. Our analysis relies on bijections with labeled trees, in which the labels encode the information on the geodesic distance from the origin. In the case of infinitely large graphs, we give in particular explicit formulas for the probabilities that the origin have given numbers of neighboring edges and/or vertices, as well as explicit values for the corresponding moments.

We derive the exact generating function for planar maps (genus zero fatgraphs) with vertices of arbitrary even valence and with two marked points at a fixed geodesic distance. This is done in a purely combinatorial way based on a bijection with decorated trees, leading to a recursion relation on the geodesic distance. The latter is solved exactly in terms of discrete soliton-like expressions, suggesting an underlying integrable structure. We extract from this solution the fractal dimensions at the various (multi)-critical points, as well as the precise scaling forms of the continuum two-point functions and the probability distributions for the geodesic distance in (multi)-critical random surfaces. The two-point functions are shown to obey differential equations involving the residues of the KdV hierarchy.
