A general lower bound for mixing of single-site dynamics on graphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2007, Vol. 17, No. 3, 931-952 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that any Markov chain that performs local, reversible updates on randomly chosen vertices of a bounded-degree graph necessarily has mixing time at least $Ω(n\log n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. Our bound applies to the so-called ``Glauber dynamics'' that has been used extensively in algorithms for the Ising model, independent sets, graph colorings and other structures in computer science and statistical physics, and demonstrates that many of these algorithms are optimal up to constant factors within their class. Previously, no superlinear lower bound was known for this class of algorithms. Though widely conjectured, such a bound had been proved previously only in very restricted circumstances, such as for the empty graph and the path. We also show that the assumption of bounded degree is necessary by giving a family of dynamics on graphs of unbounded degree with mixing time O(n).

Bounding Fastest Mixing
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a series of recent works, Boyd, Diaconis, and their co-authors have introduced a semidefinite programming approach for computing the fastest mixing Markov chain on a graph of allowed transitions, given a target stationary distribution. In this paper, we show that standard mixing-time analysis techniques--variational characterizations, conductance, canonical paths--can be used to give simple, nontrivial lower and upper bounds on the fastest mixing time. To test the applicability of this idea, we consider several detailed examples including the Glauber dynamics of the Ising model--and get sharp bounds.

The degree distribution in bipartite planar maps: applications to the Ising model
We characterize the generating function of bipartite planar maps counted according to the degree distribution of their black and white vertices. This result is applied to the solution of the hard particle and Ising models on random planar lattices. We thus recover and extend some results previously obtained by means of matrix integrals. Proofs are purely combinatorial and rely on the idea that planar maps are conjugacy classes of trees. In particular, these trees explain why the solutions of the Ising and hard particle models on maps of bounded degree are always algebraic.

Critical and Tricritical Hard Objects on Bicolorable Random Lattices: Exact Solutions
Published in J.Phys.A35:3821-3854,2002 • View PublicationBIB
We address the general problem of hard objects on random lattices, and emphasize the crucial role played by the colorability of the lattices to ensure the existence of a crystallization transition. We first solve explicitly the naive (colorless) random-lattice version of the hard-square model and find that the only matter critical point is the non-unitary Lee-Yang edge singularity. We then show how to restore the crystallization transition of the hard-square model by considering the same model on bicolored random lattices. Solving this model exactly, we show moreover that the crystallization transition point lies in the universality class of the Ising model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. We finally extend our analysis to a new two-particle exclusion model, whose regular lattice version involves hard squares of two different sizes. The exact solution of this model on bicolorable random lattices displays a phase diagram with two (continuous and discontinuous) crystallization transition lines meeting at a higher order critical point, in the universality class of the tricritical Ising model coupled to 2D quantum gravity.

Information flow on trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a tree network $T$, where each edge acts as an independent copy of a given channel $M$, and information is propagated from the root. For which $T$ and $M$ does the configuration obtained at level $n$ of $T$ typically contain significant information on the root variable? This problem arose independently in biology, information theory and statistical physics. For all $b$, we construct a channel for which the variable at the root of the $b$-ary tree is independent of the configuration at level 2 of that tree, yet for sufficiently large $B>b$, the mutual information between the configuration at level $n$ of the $B$-ary tree and the root variable is bounded away from zero. This is related to certain secret-sharing protocols. We improve the upper bounds on information flow for asymmetric binary channels (which correspond to the Ising model with an external field) and for symmetric $q$-ary channels (which correspond to Potts models). Let $\lam_2(M)$ denote the second largest eigenvalue of $M$, in absolute value. A CLT of Kesten and Stigum~(1966) implies that if $b |\lam_2(M)|^2 >1$, then the {\em census} of the variables at any level of the $b$-ary tree, contains significant information on the root variable. We establish a converse: if $b |\lam_2(M)|^2 < 1$, then the census of the variables at level $n$ of the $b$-ary tree is asymptotically independent of the root variable. This contrasts with examples where $b |\lam_2(M)|^2 <1$, yet the {\em configuration} at level $n$ is not asymptotically independent of the root variable.

Ising model on nonorientable surfaces: Exact solution for the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle
Published in Phys.Rev. E63 (2001) 026107 • View PublicationBIB
Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our analysis confirms that the central charge is c=1/2.

Combinatorial and topological approach to the 3D Ising model
Published in J.Phys.A33:741-761,2000 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the planar Pfaffian formalism for the evaluation of the Ising partition function to lattices of high topological genus g. The 3D Ising model on a cubic lattice, where g is proportional to the number of sites, is discussed in detail. The expansion of the partition function is given in terms of 2^{2 g} Pfaffians classified by the oriented homology cycles of the lattice, i.e. by its spin-structures. Correct counting is guaranteed by a signature term which depends on the topological intersection of the oriented cycles through a simple bilinear formula. The role of a gauge symmetry arising in the above expansion is discussed. The same formalism can be applied to the counting problem of perfect matchings over general lattices and provides a determinant expansion of the permanent of 0-1 matrices.

Some Polyomino Tilings of the Plane
We calculate the generating functions for the number of tilings of rectangles of various widths by the right tromino, the $L$ tetromino, and the $T$ tetromino. This allows us to place lower bounds on the entropy of tilings of the plane by each of these. For the $T$ tetromino, we also derive a lower bound from the solution of the Ising model in two dimensions.
