Confirming Two Conjectures of Su and Wang
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 43 (2009) 317--322 • View PublicationBIB
Two conjectures of Su and Wang (2008) concerning binomial coefficients are proved. For $n\geq k\geq 0$ and $b>a>0$, we show that the finite sequence $C_j=\binom{n+ja}{k+jb}$ is a Pólya frequency sequence. For $n\geq k\geq 0$ and $a>b>0$, we show that there exists an integer $m\geq 0$ such that the infinite sequence $\binom{n+ja}{k+jb}, j=0, 1,...$, is log-concave for $0\leq j\leq m$ and log-convex for $j\geq m$. The proof of the first result exploits the connection between total positivity and planar networks, while that of the second uses a variation-diminishing property of the Laplace transform.
Volume computation for polytopes and partition functions for classical root systems
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 35 (2006), 551-595 • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents an algorithm to compute the value of the inverse Laplace transforms of rational functions with poles on arrangements of hyperplanes. As an application, we present an efficient computation of the partition function for classical root systems.

Completing a k-1 assignment

We consider the distribution of the value of the optimal k-assignment in an m x n-matrix, where the entries are independent exponential random variables with arbitrary rates. We give closed formulas for both the Laplace transform of this random variable and for its expected value under the condition that there is a zero-cost k-1-assignment.

Derangements and asymptotics of Laplace transforms of polynomials
We use a probabilistic approach to describe the behavior as $n -> \infty$ of the Laplace transforms of $P^n$, where $P$ a fixed complex polynomial. As a consequence we obtain a new elementary proof of an result of Gillis-Ismail-Offer in the combinatorial theory of derangements.

Integrals over Grassmannians and Random permutations

In testing the independence of two Gaussian populations, one computes the distribution of the sample canonical correlation coefficients, given that the actual correlation is zero. The "Laplace transform" of this distribution is not only an integral over the Grassmannian of p-dimensional planes in complex n-space, but is also related to a generalized hypergeometric function. Such integrals are solutions of Painlevé-like equations. They also have expansions, related to random words of length l formed with an alphabet of p letters. Given that each letter appears in the word, the maximal length of the disjoint union of p increasing subsequences of the word clearly equals l. But the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences leads to a non-trivial distribution. It is precisely this probability which appears in the expansion above.

Structure of large random hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theme of this paper is the derivation of analytic formulae for certain large combinatorial structures. The formulae are obtained via fluid limits of pure jump type Markov processes, established under simple conditions on the Laplace transforms of their Levy kernels. Furthermore, a related Gaussian approximation allows us to describe the randomness which may persist in the limit when certain parameters take critical values. Our method is quite general, but is applied here to vertex identifiability in random hypergraphs. A vertex v is identifiable in n steps if there is a hyperedge containing v all of whose other vertices are identifiable in fewer than n steps. We say that a hyperedge is identifiable if every one of its vertices is identifiable. Our analytic formulae describe the asymptotics of the number of identifiable vertices and the number of identifiable hyperedges for a Poisson random hypergraph on a set of N vertices, in the limit as N goes to infinity.
