A Short Note on Integral Transformations and Conversion Formulas for Sequence Generating Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to provide an expository introduction to some more curious integral formulas and transformations involving generating functions. We seek to generalize these results and integral representations which effectively provide a mechanism for converting between a sequence's ordinary and exponential generating function (OGF and EGF, respectively) and vice versa. The Laplace transform provides an integral formula for the EGF-to-OGF transformation, where the reverse OGF-to-EGF operation requires more careful integration techniques. We prove two variants of the OGF-to-EGF transformation integrals from the Hankel loop contour for the reciprocal gamma function and from Fourier series expansions of integral representations for the Hadamard product of two generating functions, respectively. We also suggest several generalizations of these integral formulas and provide new examples along the way.

Half-space Macdonald processes
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 8 (2020) e11 • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts. We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Non-rigorous saddle point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy-Widom GOE, GSE or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.

On a transformation of Riordan moment sequences
We define a transformation that associates certain exponential moment sequences with ordinary moment sequences in a natural way. The ingredients of this transformation are series reversion, the Sumudu transform (a variant of the Laplace transform), and the inverting of generating functions. This transformation also has a simple interpretation in terms of continued fractions. It associates lattice path objects with permutation objects, and in particular it associates the Narayana triangle with the Eulerian triangle.

Canonical Bases for Permutohedral Plates
We study three finite-dimensional quotient vector spaces constructed from the linear span of the set of characteristic functions of permutohedral cones by imposing two kinds of constraints: (1) neglect characteristic functions of higher codimension permutohedral cones, and (2) neglect characteristic functions of non-pointed permutohedral cones. We construct an ordered basis which is canonical, in the sense that it has subsets which map onto ordered bases for the quotients. We present straightening relations to the canonical basis, and using Laplace transforms we obtain functional representations for each quotient space.
On the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity
Published in Classical and Quantum Gravity, 35 (2018) 065008 • View PublicationBIB
We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity concentrating on the part of the spectrum relevant for isolated horizons. We first show that the approximations relying on integer partitions are not sufficient to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue distribution for large areas. We then develop a method, based on Laplace transforms, that provides a very accurate solution to this problem. The representation that we get is valid for any area and can be used to obtain its asymptotics in the large area limit.

$A$-Hypergeometric Modules and Gauss--Manin Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A$ be a $d$ by $n$ integer matrix. Gel'fand et al. proved that most $A$-hypergeometric systems have an interpretation as a Fourier--Laplace transform of a direct image. The set of parameters for which this happens was later identified by Schulze and Walther as the set of not strongly resonant parameters of $A$. A similar statement relating $A$-hypergeometric systems to exceptional direct images was proved by Reichelt. In this article, we consider a hybrid approach involving neighborhoods $U$ of the torus of $A$ and consider compositions of direct and exceptional direct images. Our main results characterize for which parameters the associated $A$-hypergeometric system is the inverse Fourier-Laplace transform of such a "mixed Gauss-Manin" system. In order to describe which $U$ work for such a parameter, we introduce the notions of fiber support and cofiber support of a D-module. If the semigroup ring of $A$ is normal, we show that every $A$-hypergeometric system is "mixed Gauss--Manin". We also give an explicit description of the neighborhoods $U$ which work for each parameter in terms of primitive integral support functions.

A universal law for Voronoi cell volumes in infinitely large maps
Published in J. Stat. Mech. (2018) 013205 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss the volume of Voronoi cells defined by two marked vertices picked randomly at a fixed given mutual distance 2s in random planar quadrangulations. We consider the regime where the mutual distance 2s is kept finite while the total volume of the quadrangulation tends to infinity. In this regime, exactly one of the Voronoi cells keeps a finite volume, which scales as s^4 for large s. We analyze the universal probability distribution of this, properly rescaled, finite volume and present an explicit formula for its Laplace transform.

Point-to-line polymers and orthogonal Whittaker functions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 371(12): 8339-8379 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We study a one dimensional directed polymer model in an inverse-gamma random environment, known as the log-gamma polymer, in three different geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half line and when the polymer is restricted to a half space with end point lying free on the corresponding half line.Via the use of A.N.Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions, thus obtaining new connections between the ubiquitous class of Whittaker functions and exactly solvable probabilistic models. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulae for the corresponding Laplace transforms. Passing to the zero-temperature limit, we obtain new formulae for the corresponding last passage percolation problems with exponential weights.

Variants of geometric RSK, geometric PNG and the multipoint distribution of the log-gamma polymer
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the reformulation of the geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (gRSK) correspondence via local moves, introduced in \cite{OSZ14} can be extended to cases where the input matrix is replaced by more general polygonal, Young-diagram-like, arrays of the form $\polygon$. We also show that a rearrangement of the sequence of the local moves gives rise to a geometric version of the polynuclear growth model (PNG). These reformulations are used to obtain integral formulae for the Laplace transform of the joint distribution of the point-to-point partition functions of the log-gamma polymer at different space-time points. In the case of two points at equal time $N$ and space at distance of order $N^{2/3}$, we show formally that the joint law of the partition functions, scaled by $N^{1/3}$, converges to the two-point function of the Airy process

New Laplace transforms for the generalized hypergeometric functions 2F2 and 3F3
Motivated by the new Laplace transforms for the Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions $_1F_1$ obtained recently by Kim et al. [Math $\&$ Comput. Modelling, 55 (2012), pp. 1068--1071], the authors aim is to establish so far unknown Laplace transforms of rather general case of generalized hypergeometric functions $_2F_2(x)$ and $_3F_3(x)$ by employing extensions of classical summation theorems for the series $_2F_1$ and $_3F_2$ obtained recently by Kim et al. [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci., 309503, 26 pages, 2010]. Certain known results obtained earlier by Kim et al. follow cases of our main findings.

Free energies and fluctuations for the Unitary Brownian Motion
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics (2016), 348(2), 395-444 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independant unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. This results allow to study asymptotics of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang-Mills measure on the plane. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analog to Schwinger-Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal.

On the exit time from a cone for random walks with drift
Published in Revista Matemática Iberoamericana 32 (2016) 511-532 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the exponential decay of the probability that a given multi-dimensional random walk stays in a convex cone up to time $n$, as $n$ goes to infinity. We show that the latter equals the minimum, on the dual cone, of the Laplace transform of the random walk increments. As an example, our results find applications in the counting of walks in orthants, a classical domain in enumerative combinatorics.

Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities from the cut-and-join equation
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present some Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities which are derived from the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the orbifold Hurwitz numbers. As an application, we prove a conjecture on Hurwitz-Hodge integral proposed by J. Zhou in 2008.
The spectral curve of the Eynard-Orantin recursion via the Laplace transform
Published in Algebraic and Geometric Aspects of Integrable Systems and Random Matrices, Dzhamay, Maruno and Pierce, Eds. Contemporary Mathematics 593, 263-315 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
The Eynard-Orantin recursion formula provides an effective tool for certain enumeration problems in geometry. The formula requires a spectral curve and the recursion kernel. We present a uniform construction of the spectral curve and the recursion kernel from the unstable geometries of the original counting problem. We examine this construction using four concrete examples: Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants (or higher-genus analogue of the Catalan numbers), the intersection numbers of tautological cotangent classes on the moduli stack of stable pointed curves, single Hurwitz numbers, and the stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of the complex projective line.

Macdonald processes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following. (1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.
Tropical Combinatorics and Whittaker functions
Published in Duke Math. J. 163, no. 3 (2014), 513-563 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a fundamental connection between the geometric RSK correspondence and GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions, analogous to the well known relationship between the RSK correspondence and Schur functions. This gives rise to a natural family of measures associated with GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions which are the analogues in this setting of the Schur measures on integer partitions. The corresponding analogue of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity can be seen as a generalisation of an integral identity for GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions due to Bump and Stade. As an application, we obtain an explicit integral formula for the Laplace transform of the law of the partition function associated with a one-dimensional directed polymer model with log-gamma weights recently introduced by one of the authors (TS).

Stochastic coalescence in logarithmic time
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2013, Vol. 23, No. 2, 492-528 • View PublicationBIB
The following distributed coalescence protocol was introduced by Dahlia Malkhi in 2006 motivated by applications in social networking. Initially there are n agents wishing to coalesce into one cluster via a decentralized stochastic process, where each round is as follows: every cluster flips a fair coin to dictate whether it is to issue or accept requests in this round. Issuing a request amounts to contacting a cluster randomly chosen proportionally to its size. A cluster accepting requests is to select an incoming one uniformly (if there are such) and merge with that cluster. Empirical results by Fernandess and Malkhi suggested the protocol concludes in O(log n) rounds with high probability, whereas numerical estimates by Oded Schramm, based on an ingenious analytic approximation, suggested that the coalescence time should be super-logarithmic. Our contribution is a rigorous study of the stochastic coalescence process with two consequences. First, we confirm that the above process indeed requires super-logarithmic time w.h.p., where the inefficient rounds are due to oversized clusters that occasionally develop. Second, we remedy this by showing that a simple modification produces an essentially optimal distributed protocol; if clusters favor their smallest incoming merge request then the process does terminate in O(log n) rounds w.h.p., and simulations show that the new protocol readily outperforms the original one. Our upper bound hinges on a potential function involving the logarithm of the number of clusters and the cluster-susceptibility, carefully chosen to form a supermartingale. The analysis of the lower bound builds upon the novel approach of Schramm which may find additional applications: rather than seeking a single parameter that controls the system behavior, instead one approximates the system by the Laplace transform of the entire cluster-size distribution.

Topological recursion for the Poincare polynomial of the combinatorial moduli space of curves
Published in Advances in Mathematics 230, 1322--1339 (2012) • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Poincare polynomial associated with the orbifold cell decomposition of the moduli space of smooth algebraic curves with distinct marked points satisfies a topological recursion formula of the Eynard-Orantin type. The recursion uniquely determines the Poincare polynomials from the initial data. Our key discovery is that the Poincare polynomial is the Laplace transform of the number of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants.

Polynomial recursion formula for linear Hodge integrals
Published in Communications in Number Theory and Physics vol. 4 No.2, 267--294 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
We establish a polynomial recursion formula for linear Hodge integrals. It is obtained as the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the simple Hurwitz numbers. We show that the recursion recovers the Witten-Kontsevich theorem when restricted to the top degree terms, and also the combinatorial factor of the lambda_g formula as the lowest degree terms.

The Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation and the Bouchard-Marino conjecture on Hurwitz numbers
Published in Publications of the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences 47, 629--670 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil. The result is a polynomial equation that has the topological structure identical to the Mirzakhani recursion formula for the Weil-Petersson volume of the moduli space of bordered hyperbolic surfaces. We find that the direct image of this Laplace transformed equation via the inverse of the Lambert W-function is the topological recursion formula for Hurwitz numbers conjectured by Bouchard and Marino using topological string theory.
