Laplacian, on the Sierpinski tetrahedron
Numerous work revolve around the Sierpinski gasket. Its three-dimensional analogue, the Sierpinski tetrahedron, obtained by means of an iterative process which consists in repeatedly contracting a regular 3-simplex to one half of its original height, put together four copies, the frontier corners of which coincide with the initial simplex, appears as a natural extension. Yet, very few works concern the Sierpinski tetrahedron in the existing literature. We go further and, after a detailed study, we give the explicit spectrum of the Laplacian, with a specific presentation of the first eigenvalues. This enables us to obtain an estimate of the spectral counting function (analogous of Weyl's law)

Laplacian, on the graph of the Weierstrass function
The Laplacian plays a major role in the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations. Recently, the work of J. Kigami, taken up by R. S. Strichartz, allowed the construction of an operator of the same nature, defined locally, on graphs having a fractal character: the triangle of Sierpinski, the carpet of Sierpinski, the diamond fractal, the Julia sets, the fern of Barnsley. Strangely, the case of the graph of the Weierstrass function, introduced in 1872 by K. Weierstrass, which presents self similarity properties, does not seem to have been considered anywhere. It is yet an obligatory passage, in the perspective of studying diffusion phenomena in irregular structures. We have asked ourselves the following question: given a continuous function u on the graph of the Weierstrass function, under which conditions is it possible to associate to u a function Delta u which is, in the weak sense, its Laplacian ? We present, in the following, the results obtained by following the approach of J. Kigami and R. S. Strichartz. Ours is made in a completely renewed framework, as regards, the one, affine, of the Sierpinski gasket. First, we concentrate on Dirichlet forms, on the graph of the Weierstrass function, which enable us the, subject to its existence, to define the Laplacian of a continuous function on this graph. This Laplacian appears as the renormalized limit of a sequence of discrete Laplacians on a sequence of graphs which converge to the one of the Weierstrass function. The normalization constants related to each graph Laplacian are obtained thanks Dirichlet forms. The spectrum of the Laplacian thus built is obtained through spectral decimation.

Divisible sandpile on Sierpinski gasket graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The divisible sandpile model is a growth model on graphs that was introduced by Levine and Peres as a tool to study internal diffusion limited aggregation. In this work we investigate the shape of the divisible sandpile model on the graphical Sierpinski gasket SG. We show that the shape is a ball in the graph metric of SG. Moreover we give an exact representation of the odometer function of the divisible sandpile.

The edge-isorperimetric problem on Sierpinski graphs
Some families of graphs, such as the n-cubes and Sierpinski gaskets, are self-similar. In this paper we show how such recursive structure can be used systematically to prove isoperimetric theorems.

Counting spanning trees on fractal graphs and their asymptotic complexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the method of spectral decimation and a modified version of Kirchhoff's Matrix-Tree Theorem, a closed form solution to the number of spanning trees on approximating graphs to a fully symmetric self-similar structure on a finitely ramified fractal is given in Theorem \ref{thm:maintheoremfull}. We show how spectral decimation implies the existence of the asymptotic complexity constant and obtain some bounds for it. Examples calculated include the Sierpinski Gasket, a non post critically finite analog of the Sierpinski Gasket, the Diamond fractal, and the Hexagasket. For each example, the asymptotic complexity constant is found.
Deterministic Abelian Sandpile and square-triangle tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Abelian Sandpile Model, seen as a deterministic lattice automaton, on two-dimensional periodic graphs generates complex regular patterns displaying (fractal) self-similarity. In particular, on a variety of lattices and initial conditions, at all sizes, there appears what we call an exact Sierpinski structure: the volume is filled with periodic patterns, glued together along straight lines, with the topology of a triangular Sierpinski gasket. Various lattices (square, hexagonal, kagome,...), initial conditions, and toppling rules show Sierpinski structures which are apparently unrelated and involve different mechanisms. As will be shown elsewhere, all these structures fall under one roof, and are in fact different projections of a unique mechanism pertinent to a family of deterministic surfaces in a 4-dimensional lattice. This short note gives a description of this surface, and of the combinatorics associated to its construction.

Word-representability of subdivisions of triangular grid graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is word-representable if there exists a word $w$ over the alphabet $V$ such that letters $x$ and $y$ alternate in $w$ if and only if $(x,y)\in E$. A triangular grid graph is a subgraph of a tiling of the plane with equilateral triangles defined by a finite number of triangles, called cells. A subdivision of a triangular grid graph is replacing some of its cells by plane copies of the complete graph $K_4$. Inspired by a recent elegant result of Akrobotu et al., who classified word-representable triangulations of grid graphs related to convex polyominoes, we characterize word-representable subdivisions of triangular grid graphs. A key role in the characterization is played by smart orientations introduced by us in this paper. As a corollary to our main result, we obtain that any subdivision of boundary triangles in the Sierpiński gasket graph is word-representable.

Graphs with minimal well-covered dimension
There is a class of graphs with well-covered dimension equal to the simplicial clique number that contains all chordal graphs and infinitely many other graphs. These graphs generalize a result by Brown and Nowakowski on the well-covered dimension of chordal graphs. Furthermore, each member of the infinite family of Sierpinski gasket graphs of order at least $2$ has well-covered dimension $3,$ the simplicial clique number.

Fractal patterns related to dividing coins
Published in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals 66, 51-57 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
The present paper formulates and solves a problem of dividing coins. The basic form of the problem seeks the set of the possible ways of dividing coins of face values 1,2,4,8,... between three people. We show that this set possesses a nested structure like the Sierpinski-gasket fractal. For a set of coins with face values power of r, the number of layer of the gasket becomes r. A higher-dimensional Sierpinski gasket is obtained if the number of people is more than three. In addition to Sierpinski-type fractals, the Cantor set is also obtained in dividing an incomplete coin set between two people.

Counting Spanning Trees on Fractal Graphs
Using the method of spectral decimation and a modified version of Kirchhoffs Matrix-Tree Theorem, a closed form solution to the number of spanning trees on approximating graphs to a fully symmetric self-similar structure on a finitely ramified fractal is given in Theorem (3.4). Examples calculated include the Sierpinski Gasket, a non p.c.f. analog of the Sierpinski Gasket, the Diamond fractal, and the Hexagasket. For each example, the asymptotic complexity constant is found. Dropping the fully symmetry assumption, it is shown that the limsup and liminf of the asymptotic complexity constant exist.

Counting dimer coverings on self-similar Schreier graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 33, Issue 7 (2012), 1484-1513 • View PublicationBIB
We study partition functions for the dimer model on families of finite graphs converging to infinite self-similar graphs and forming approximation sequences to certain well-known fractals. The graphs that we consider are provided by actions of finitely generated groups by automorphisms on rooted trees, and thus their edges are naturally labeled by the generators of the group. It is thus natural to consider weight functions on these graphs taking different values according to the labeling. We study in detail the well-known example of the Hanoi Towers group $H^{(3)}$, closely related to the Sierpiński gasket.

The Tutte polynomial of the Sierpinski and Hanoi graphs
Published in Advances in Geometry, Vol. 13 (2013), Issue 4, 663-694 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Tutte polynomial of two infinite families of finite graphs: the Sierpiński graphs, which are finite approximations of the well-known Sierpiński gasket, and the Schreier graphs of the Hanoi Towers group $H^{(3)}$ acting on the rooted ternary tree. For both of them, we recursively describe the Tutte polynomial and we compute several special evaluations of it, giving interesting results about the combinatorial structure of these graphs.

Hamiltonian paths on the Sierpinski gasket
Published in J. Math. Phys. 52, 023301 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
We derive exactly the number of Hamiltonian paths H(n) on the two dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) at stage $n$, whose asymptotic behavior is given by $\frac{\sqrt{3}(2\sqrt{3})^{3^{n-1}}}{3} \times (\frac{5^2 \times 7^2 \times 17^2}{2^{12} \times 3^5 \times 13})(16)^n$. We also obtain the number of Hamiltonian paths with one end at a certain outmost vertex of SG(n), with asymptotic behavior $\frac {\sqrt{3}(2\sqrt{3})^{3^{n-1}}}{3} \times (\frac {7 \times 17}{2^4 \times 3^3})4^n$. The distribution of Hamiltonian paths on SG(n) with one end at a certain outmost vertex and the other end at an arbitrary vertex of SG(n) is investigated. We rigorously prove that the exponent for the mean $\ell$ displacement between the two end vertices of such Hamiltonian paths on SG(n) is $\ell \log 2 / \log 3$ for $\ell>0$.

Perfect matchings of line graphs with small maximum degree
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)=\{v_1,v_2,...,v_ν\}$, which may have multiple edges but have no loops, and $2\leq d_G(v_i)\leq 3$ for $i=1,2,...,ν$, where $d_G(v)$ denotes the degree of vertex $v$ of $G$. We show that if $G$ has an even number of edges, then the number of perfect matchings of the line graph of $G$ equals $2^{n/2+1}$, where $n$ is the number of 3-degree vertices of $G$. As a corollary, we prove that the number of perfect matchings of a connected cubic line graph with $n$ vertices equals $2^{n/6+1}$ if $n>4$, which implies the conjecture by Lovász and Plummer holds for the connected cubic line graphs. As applications, we enumerate perfect matchings of the Kagomé lattices, $3.12.12$ lattices, and Sierpinski gasket with dimension two in the context of statistical physics.

Spanning forests on the Sierpinski gasket
Published in Discret. Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. 10, 55-76 (2008) • View PublicationBIB
We present the numbers of spanning forests on the Sierpinski gasket $SG_d(n)$ at stage $n$ with dimension $d$ equal to two, three and four, and determine the asymptotic behaviors. The corresponding results on the generalized Sierpinski gasket $SG_{d,b}(n)$ with $d=2$ and $b=3,4$ are obtained. We also derive the upper bounds of the asymptotic growth constants for both $SG_d$ and $SG_{2,b}$.

Spanning trees on the Sierpinski gasket
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 126 (2007) 649-667 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the numbers of spanning trees on the Sierpinski gasket $SG_d(n)$ with dimension $d$ equal to two, three and four. The general expression for the number of spanning trees on $SG_d(n)$ with arbitrary $d$ is conjectured. The numbers of spanning trees on the generalized Sierpinski gasket $SG_{d,b}(n)$ with $d=2$ and $b=3,4$ are also obtained.

The {\it Sierpiński fractal} or {\it Sierpiński gasket} $Σ$ is a familiar object studied by specialists in dynamical systems and probability. In this paper, we consider a graph $S_n$ derived from the first $n$ iterations of the process that leads to $Σ$, and study some of its properties, including its cycle structure, domination number and pebbling number. Various open questions are posed.

Shortest paths in the Tower of Hanoi graph and finite automata
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present efficient algorithms for constructing a shortest path between two states in the Tower of Hanoi graph, and for computing the length of the shortest path. The key element is a finite-state machine which decides, after examining on the average only 63/38 of the largest discs, whether the largest disc will be moved once or twice. This solves a problem raised by Andreas Hinz, and results in a better understanding of how the shortest path is determined. Our algorithm for computing the length of the shortest path is typically about twice as fast as the existing algorithm. We also use our results to give a new derivation of the average distance 466/885 between two random points on the Sierpinski gasket of unit side.
