Compact orbit spaces in Hilbert spaces and limits of edge-colouring models
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group of orthogonal transformations of a real Hilbert space $H$. Let $R$ and $W$ be bounded $G$-stable subsets of $H$. Let $\|.\|_R$ be the seminorm on $H$ defined by $\|x\|_R:=\sup_{r\in R}|\langle r,x\rangle|$ for $x\in H$. We show that if $W$ is weakly compact and the orbit space $R^k/G$ is compact for each $k\in\oN$, then the orbit space $W/G$ is compact when $W$ is equiped with the norm topology induced by $\|.\|_R$. As a consequence we derive the existence of limits of edge-colouring models which answers a question posed by Lovász. It forms the edge-colouring counterpart of the graph limits of Lovász and Szegedy, which can be seen as limits of vertex-colouring models. In the terminology of de la Harpe and Jones, vertex- and edge-colouring models are called `spin models' and `vertex models' respectively.

Characterizing partition functions of the spin model by rank growth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize which graph invariants are partition functions of a spin model over the complex numbers, in terms of the rank growth of associated `connection matrices'.

Spin models constructed from Hadamard matrices
Published in Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computing 40 (2012), 231-248 • View PublicationBIB
A spin model (for link invariants) is a square matrix $W$ which satisfies certain axioms. For a spin model $W$, it is known that $W^TW^{-1}$ is a permutation matrix, and its order is called the index of $W$. F. Jaeger and K. Nomura found spin models of index 2, by modifying the construction of symmetric spin models from Hadamard matrices. The aim of this paper is to give a construction of spin models of an arbitrary even index from any Hadamard matrix. In particular, we show that our spin models of indices a power of 2 are new.

Commutative association schemes
Published in European J. Combin. 30 (2009) 1497-1525 • View PublicationBIB
Association schemes were originally introduced by Bose and his co-workers in the design of statistical experiments. Since that point of inception, the concept has proved useful in the study of group actions, in algebraic graph theory, in algebraic coding theory, and in areas as far afield as knot theory and numerical integration. This branch of the theory, viewed in this collection of surveys as the "commutative case," has seen significant activity in the last few decades. The goal of the present survey is to discuss the most important new developments in several directions, including Gelfand pairs, cometric association schemes, Delsarte Theory, spin models and the semidefinite programming technique. The narrative follows a thread through this list of topics, this being the contrast between combinatorial symmetry and group-theoretic symmetry, culminating in Schrijver's SDP bound for binary codes (based on group actions) and its connection to the Terwilliger algebra (based on combinatorial symmetry). We propose this new role of the Terwilliger algebra in Delsarte Theory as a central topic for future work.

Type-II Matrices and Combinatorial Structures

Type-II matrices are a class of matrices used by Jones in his work on spin models. In this paper we show that type-II matrices arise naturally in connection with some interesting combinatorial and geometric structures.

Jones Pairs
Motivated by Jones' braid group representations constructed from spin models, we define {\sl a Jones pair} to be a pair of $\nbyn$ matrices $(A,B)$ such that the endomorphisms $X_A$ and $\D_B$ form a representation of a braid group. When $A$ and $B$ are type-II matrices, we call $(A,B)$ {\sl an invertible Jones pair}. We develop the theory of Jones pairs in this thesis. Our aim is to study the connections among association schemes, spin models and four-weight spin models using the viewpoint of Jones pairs. We use Nomura's method to construct a pair of algebras from the matrices $(A,B)$, which we call the Nomura algebras of $(A,B)$. These algebras become the central tool in this thesis. We explore their properties in Chapters \ref{Nomura} and \ref{IINom}. In Chapter \ref{JP}, we introduce Jones pairs. We prove the equivalence of four-weight spin models and invertible Jones pairs. We extend some existing concepts for four-weight spin models to Jones pairs. In Chapter \ref{SpinModels}, we provide new proofs for some well-known results on the Bose-Mesner algebras associated with spin models. We document the main results of the thesis in Chapter \ref{InvJP}. We prove that every four-weight spin model comes from a symmetric spin model (up to odd-gauge equivalence). We present four Bose-Mesner algebras associated to each four-weight spin model. We study the relations among these algebras. In particular, we provide a strategy to search for four-weight spin models. This strategy is analogous to the method given by Bannai, Bannai and Jaeger for finding spin models.

Equiangular lines, mutually unbiased bases, and spin models
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 30 (2009), pp. 246--262 • View PublicationBIB
We use difference sets to construct interesting sets of lines in complex space. Using (v,k,1)-difference sets, we obtain k^2-k+1 equiangular lines in C^k when k-1 is a prime power. Using semiregular relative difference sets with parameters (k,n,k,l) we construct sets of n+1 mutually unbiased bases in C^k. We show how to construct these difference sets from commutative semifields and that several known maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases can be obtained in this way, resolving a conjecture about the monomiality of maximal sets. We also relate mutually unbiased bases to spin models.

Bose-Mesner Algebras attached to Invertible Jones Pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1989, Vaughan Jones introduced spin models and showed that they could be used to form link invariants in two different ways--by constructing representations of the braid group, or by constructing partition functions. These spin models were subsequently generalized to so-called 4-weight spin models by Bannai and Bannai; these could be used to construct partition functions, but did not lead to braid group representations in any obvious way. Jaeger showed that spin models were intimately related to certain association schemes. Yamada gave a construction of a symmetric spin model on $4n$ vertices from each 4-weight spin model on $n$ vertices. In this paper we build on recent work with Munemasa to give a different proof to Yamada's result, and we analyse the structure of the association scheme attached to this spin model.

Characterization of SDP Designs That Yield Certain Spin Models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the SDP designs that give rise to four-weight spin models with two values. We prove that the only such designs are the symplectic SDP designs. The proof involves analysis of cardinalities of intersections of four blocks.

Four-Weight Spin Models and Jones Pairs
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 355 (2003), 2305-2325 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and discuss Jones pairs. These provide a generalization and a new approach to the four-weight spin models of Bannai and Bannai. We show that each four-weight spin model determines a ``dual'' pair of association schemes.
