New constructions of optimal arrangements of $2d$ lines in $\mathbb{C}^d$
In this paper we provide new constructions of equiangular tight frames of size $2d$ in $\mathbb{C}^d$. We generalize the doubling construction of Fallon and Iverson to a tensor multiplication construction based on a suitable pair consisting of a complex Hadamard matrix and an equiangular tight frame. In particular, such a pair always exists whenever there is an amicable pair of real Hadamard matrices. Most notably, amicable Hadamard pairs of order $q+1$ exist for all prime powers $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. We also find specific constructions based on a family of pairs of order 6 and on pairs whose equiangular tight frames are defined by Paley conference matrices with $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Finally, we provide a power construction of equiangular tight frames that generalizes the construction of Turyn for conference matrices.
Extremal graphs for the $k$-th eigenvalue
For a simple graph $G$ of order $n$, let $λ_1(G)\ge \cdots \ge λ_n(G)$ denote its adjacency eigenvalues. Hong's problem asks for the optimal upper bound for $λ_k(G)$. A recent theorem of Sivashankar gives, for every $k\ge3$, \[
λ_k(G)\le
\frac{(k-2)\sqrt{k+1}+2}{2k(k-1)}\,n-1, \] with sharp examples arising from maximal real equiangular tight frames. In this paper, we characterize the equality case. We also obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the extremal graphs for $λ_3$ and $λ_4$.
Equiangular tight frames in real symplectic space: Zauner's conjecture and the skew Hadamard conjecture
We introduce the notion of equiangular tight frames in real symplectic spaces and formulate a conjecture on their existence in terms of the dimension and number of vectors. Our main results shows the "symplectic Zauner's conjecture" is equivalent to the skew Hadamard conjecture. The proof involves counting subgraphs called "diamonds" in tournaments.
Abelian and Dihedral equiangular tight frames of redundancy $2$
This paper studies group frames ($G$-frames) where the unitary group representation can be projective. When the group is abelian, for most combinations $N, n$, we show that $ETF(N,n)$ can only exist for genuinely projective group representations. In particular, cyclic-group frames for such parameters do not exist. We also give a characterization of all dihedral tight frames and dihedral $ETF(2n,n)$, using which, we conclude that regular dihedral $ETF(2n,n)$ must be genuinely projective. Following that, we give a characterization of regular dihedral $ETF(2n,n)$ in terms of certain structured skew Hadamard matrices. We then show that Paley $ETF(2n,n)$ and its doubling are both of this type. Finally, we classify all regular dihedral $ETF(2n,n)$ for $n\le 22$ up to switching equivalence.
Existence and nonexistence of spherical $5$-designs of minimal type
This paper investigates the existence and properties of spherical $5$-designs of minimal type. We focus on two cases: tight spherical $5$-designs and antipodal spherical $4$-distance $5$-designs. We prove that a tight spherical $5$-design is of minimal type if and only if it possesses a specific $Q$-polynomial coherent configuration structure. For tight spherical $5$-designs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of minimal type, we demonstrate that half of the derived code forms an equiangular tight frames (ETF) with parameters $(d-1, \frac{(d-1)(d+1)}{3})$. This provides a sufficient condition for constructing such ETFs from maximal ETFs with parameters $(d, \frac{d(d+1)}{2})$. Moreover, we establish that tight spherical $5$-designs of minimal type cannot exist if the dimension $d$ satisfies a certain arithmetic condition, which holds for infinitely many values of $d$, including $d=119$ and $527$. For antipodal spherical $4$-distance $5$-designs, we utilize valency theory to derive necessary conditions for certain special types of antipodal spherical $4$-distance $5$-designs to be of minimal type.
Roux schemes which carry association schemes locally
A roux scheme is an association scheme formed from a special "roux" matrix and the regular permutation representation of an associated group. They were introduced by Iverson and Mixon for their connection to equiangular tight frames and doubly transitive lines. We show how roux matrices can be produced from association schemes and characterise roux schemes for which the neighbourhood of a vertex induces an association scheme possessing the same number of relations as the thin radical. An important example arises from the $64$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{C}^8$ constructed by Hoggar which we prove is unique (determined by its parameters up to isomorphism). We also characterise roux schemes by their eigenmatrices and provide new families of roux schemes using our construction.
Connections Between Frames with Rational Eigensteps and Semistandard Young Tableaux
In this paper, we explore a correspondence between frames with rational eigensteps and semistandard Young tableaux (SSYT), via the relation assigning a Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern to a frame via the frame's eigensteps. We will identify how certain key structures in SSYTs correlate with particular frame properties. For example, the weight of an SSYT yields the sequence of norms of any compatible frame. Additionally, this correspondence leads to a novel way to construct the eigensteps of a frame coming solely from tableaux. This is an alternative to the Top Kill algorithm which may be viewed as a combinatorial reinterpretation of the algorithm. We further employ other combinatorial techniques such as the boxcomp method to generate a ``complement" SSYT. On the frame side, this corresponds to a tight frame's Naimark complement as well as to a generalization of the Naimark complement for non-tight frames. Further research points to an analysis of equiangular tight frames and their corresponding tableaux, as well as using more combinatorial operations to further analyze frames.
On the Structure of Frames and Equiangular Lines over Finite Fields and their Connections to Design Theory
This paper concerns frames and equiangular lines over finite fields. We find a necessary and sufficient condition for systems of equiangular lines over finite fields to be equiangular tight frames (ETFs). As is the case over subfields of $\mathbb{C}$, it is necessary for the Welch bound to be saturated, but there is an additional condition required involving sums of triple products. We also prove that similar to the case over $\mathbb{C}$, collections of vectors are similar to a regular simplex essentially when the triple products of their scalar products satisfy a certain property. Finally, we investigate switching equivalence classes of frames and systems of lines focusing on systems of equiangular lines in finite orthogonal geometries with maximal incoherent sets, drawing connections to combinatorial design theory.
$k$-Homogeneous Equiangular Tight Frames
We consider geometric and combinatorial characterizations of equiangular tight frames (ETFs), with the former concerning homogeneity of the vector and line symmetry groups and the latter the matroid structure. We introduce the concept of the bender of a frame, which is the collection of short circuits, which in turn are the dependent subsets of frame vectors of minimum size. We also show that ETFs with $k$-homogeneous line symmetry groups have benders which are $k$-designs. Paley ETFs are a known class of ETFs constructed using number theory. We determine the line and vector symmetry groups of all Paley ETFs and show that they are $2$-homogeneous. We additionally characterize all $k$-homogeneous ETFs for $k\geq 3$. Finally, we revisit David Larson's AMS Memoirs \emph{Frames, Bases, and Group Representations} coauthored with Deguang Han and \emph{Wandering Vectors for Unitary Systems and Orthogonal Wavelets} coauthored with Xingde Dai with a modern eye and focus on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.
Bounds on Discrete Potentials of Spherical (k,k)-Designs
We derive universal lower and upper bounds for max-min and min-max problems (also known as polarization) for the potential of spherical $(k,k)$-designs and provide certain examples, including unit-norm tight frames, that attain these bounds. The universality is understood in the sense that the bounds hold for all spherical $(k,k)$-designs and for a large class of potential functions, and the bounds involve certain nodes and weights that are independent of the potential. When the potential function is $h(t)=t^{2k}$, we prove an optimality property of the spherical $(k,k)$-designs in the class of all spherical codes of the same cardinality both for max-min and min-max potential problems.
Minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of distance-regular and signed Johnson graphs
We study the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues over a collection of matrices associated with a graph. Lower bounds are derived based on the existence or non-existence of certain cycle(s) in a graph. A key result proves that every Johnson graph has a signed variant with exactly two distinct eigenvalues. We also explore applications to weighing matrices, linear ternary codes, tight frames, and compute the minimum rank of Johnson graphs. Further results involve the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues for graphs in association schemes, distance-regular graphs, and Hamming graphs. We also draw some connections with simplicial complexes and higher-order Laplacians.
More on the optimal arrangement of $2d$ lines in $\mathbb{C}^d$
We introduce a new infinite family of $d\times 2d$ equiangular tight frames. Many matrices in this family consist of two $d\times d$ circulant blocks. We conjecture that such equiangular tight frames exist for every $d$. We show that our conjecture holds for $d\leq 165$ by a computer-assisted application of a Newton-Kantorovich theorem. In addition, we supply numerical constructions that corroborate our conjecture for $d\leq 1500$.

We show the optimal coherence of $2d$ lines in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$ is given by the Welch bound whenever a skew Hadamard of order $d+1$ exists. Our proof uses a variant of Hadamard doubling that converts any equiangular tight frame of size $\tfrac{d-1}{2} \times d$ into another one of size $d \times 2d$. Among $d < 150$, this produces equiangular tight frames of new sizes when $d = 11$, $35$, $39$, $43$, $47$, $59$, $67$, $71$, $83$, $95$, $103$, $107$, $111$, $119$, $123$, $127$, $131$, and $143$.
Doubly transitive equiangular tight frames that contain regular simplices
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a finite sequence of equal norm vectors in a Hilbert space that achieves equality in the Welch bound, and so has minimal coherence. The binder of an ETF is the set of all subsets of its indices whose corresponding vectors form a regular simplex. An ETF achieves equality in Donoho and Elad's spark bound if and only if its binder is nonempty. When this occurs, its binder is the set of all linearly dependent subsets of it of minimal size. Moreover, if members of the binder form a balanced incomplete block design (BIBD) then its incidence matrix can be phased to produce a sparse representation of its dual (Naimark complement). A few infinite families of ETFs are known to have this remarkable property. In this paper, we relate this property to the recently introduced concept of a doubly transitive equiangular tight frame (DTETF), namely an ETF for which the natural action of its symmetry group is doubly transitive. In particular, we show that the binder of any DTETF is either empty or forms a BIBD, and moreover that when the latter occurs, any member of the binder of its dual is an oval of this BIBD. We then apply this general theory to certain known infinite families of DTETFs. Specifically, any symplectic form on a finite vector space yields a DTETF, and we compute the binder of it and its dual, showing that the former is empty except in a single notable case, and that the latter consists of affine Lagrangian subspaces. This unifies and generalizes several results from the existing literature. We then consider the binders of four infinite families of DTETFs that arise from quadratic forms over the field of two elements, showing that two of these are empty except in a finite number of cases, whereas the other two form BIBDs that relate to each other, and to Lagrangian subspaces, in nonobvious ways.
Generic MANOVA limit theorems for products of projections
We study the convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of $\mathbf{A} \mathbf{B} \mathbf{A}$ for $N \times N$ orthogonal projection matrices $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$, where $\frac{1}{N}\mathrm{Tr}(\mathbf{A})$ and $\frac{1}{N}\mathrm{Tr}(\mathbf{B})$ converge as $N \to \infty$, to Wachter's MANOVA law. Using free probability, we show mild sufficient conditions for convergence in moments and in probability, and use this to prove a conjecture of Haikin, Zamir, and Gavish (2017) on random subsets of unit-norm tight frames. This result generalizes previous ones of Farrell (2011) and Magsino, Mixon, and Parshall (2021). We also derive an explicit recursion for the difference between the empirical moments $\frac{1}{N}\mathrm{Tr}((\mathbf{A} \mathbf{B} \mathbf{A})^k)$ and the limiting MANOVA moments, and use this to prove a sufficient condition for convergence in probability of the largest eigenvalue of $\mathbf{A} \mathbf{B} \mathbf{A}$ to the right edge of the support of the limiting law in the special case where that law belongs to the Kesten-McKay family. As an application, we give a new proof of convergence in probability of the largest eigenvalue when $\mathbf{B}$ is unitarily invariant; equivalently, this determines the limiting operator norm of a rectangular submatrix of size $\frac{1}{2}N \times αN$ of a Haar-distributed $N \times N$ unitary matrix for any $α\in (0, 1)$. Unlike previous proofs, we use only moment calculations and non-asymptotic bounds on the unitary Weingarten function, which we believe should pave the way to analyzing the largest eigenvalue for products of random projections having other distributions.

A Hadamard matrix is balanced splittable if some subset of its rows has the property that the dot product of every two distinct columns takes at most two values. This definition was introduced by Kharaghani and Suda in 2019, although equivalent formulations have been previously studied using different terminology. We collate previous results phrased in terms of balanced splittable Hadamard matrices, real flat equiangular tight frames, spherical two-distance sets, and two-distance tight frames. We use combinatorial analysis to restrict the parameters of a balanced splittable Hadamard matrix to lie in one of several classes, and obtain strong new constraints on their mutual relationships. An important consideration in determining these classes is whether the strongly regular graph associated with the balanced splittable Hadamard matrix is primitive or imprimitive. We construct new infinite families of balanced splittable Hadamard matrices in both the primitive and imprimitive cases. A rich source of examples is provided by packings of partial difference sets in elementary abelian 2-groups, from which we construct Hadamard matrices admitting a row decomposition so that the balanced splittable property holds simultaneously with respect to every union of the submatrices of the decomposition.

We present all nontrivial real equiangular tight frames $\{\varphi_m\}_{m=1}^M$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ obtained as spherical embeddings of primitive rank $3$ graphs on $M$ vertices, and those such that one of their associated $M$ strongly regular graphs on $M-1$ vertices is a primitive rank $3$ graph.
Moments of Subsets of General Equiangular Tight Frames
This note outlines the steps for proving that the moments of a randomly-selected subset of a general ETF (complex, with aspect ratio $0<γ<1$) converge to the corresponding MANOVA moments. We bring here an extension for the proof of the 'Kesten-Mckay' moments (real ETF, $γ=1/2$) \cite{magsino2020kesten}. In particular, we establish a recursive computation of the $r$th moment, for $r = 1,2,\ldots$, and verify, using a symbolic program, that the recursion output coincides with the MANOVA moments.

Since the introduction of the Hermitian adjacency matrix for digraphs, interest in so-called complex unit gain graphs has surged. In this work, we consider gain graphs whose spectra contain the minimum number of two distinct eigenvalues. Analogously to graphs with few distinct eigenvalues, a great deal of structural symmetry is required for a gain graph to attain this minimum. This allows us to draw a surprising parallel to well-studied systems of lines in complex space, through a natural correspondence to unit-norm tight frames. We offer a full classification of two-eigenvalue gain graphs with degree at most $4$, or with multiplicity at most $3$. Intermediate results include an extensive review of various relevant concepts related to lines in complex space, including SIC-POVMs, MUBs and geometries such as the Coxeter-Todd lattice, and many examples obtained as induced subgraphs by employing a technique parallel to the dismantling of association schemes. Finally, we touch on an innovative application of simulated annealing to find examples by computer.
