Sign rank versus VC dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work studies the maximum possible sign rank of $N \times N$ sign matrices with a given VC dimension $d$. For $d=1$, this maximum is {three}. For $d=2$, this maximum is $\tildeΘ(N^{1/2})$. For $d >2$, similar but slightly less accurate statements hold. {The lower bounds improve over previous ones by Ben-David et al., and the upper bounds are novel.} The lower bounds are obtained by probabilistic constructions, using a theorem of Warren in real algebraic topology. The upper bounds are obtained using a result of Welzl about spanning trees with low stabbing number, and using the moment curve. The upper bound technique is also used to: (i) provide estimates on the number of classes of a given VC dimension, and the number of maximum classes of a given VC dimension -- answering a question of Frankl from '89, and (ii) design an efficient algorithm that provides an $O(N/\log(N))$ multiplicative approximation for the sign rank. We also observe a general connection between sign rank and spectral gaps which is based on Forster's argument. Consider the $N \times N$ adjacency matrix of a $Δ$ regular graph with a second eigenvalue of absolute value $λ$ and $Δ\leq N/2$. We show that the sign rank of the signed version of this matrix is at least $Δ/λ$. We use this connection to prove the existence of a maximum class $C\subseteq\{\pm 1\}^N$ with VC dimension $2$ and sign rank $\tildeΘ(N^{1/2})$. This answers a question of Ben-David et al.~regarding the sign rank of large VC classes. We also describe limitations of this approach, in the spirit of the Alon-Boppana theorem. We further describe connections to communication complexity, geometry, learning theory, and combinatorics.

The Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of cubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$
The Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of a collection of subsets of a set is an important combinatorial concept in settings such as discrete geometry and machine learning. In this paper we prove that the VC dimension of the family of $d$-dimensional cubes in $\mathbb R^d$ is $\lfloor(3d+1)/2\rfloor$.

Inapproximability of Truthful Mechanisms via Generalizations of the VC Dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
Algorithmic mechanism design (AMD) studies the delicate interplay between computational efficiency, truthfulness, and optimality. We focus on AMD's paradigmatic problem: combinatorial auctions. We present a new generalization of the VC dimension to multivalued collections of functions, which encompasses the classical VC dimension, Natarajan dimension, and Steele dimension. We present a corresponding generalization of the Sauer-Shelah Lemma and harness this VC machinery to establish inapproximability results for deterministic truthful mechanisms. Our results essentially unify all inapproximability results for deterministic truthful mechanisms for combinatorial auctions to date and establish new separation gaps between truthful and non-truthful algorithms.

Shattering-extremal set systems of VC dimension at most 2
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S=\{F \cap S : F \in \mathcal{F}\}$. The Sauer inequality states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called shattering-extremal if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. In this paper we characterize shattering-extremal set systems of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension $2$ in terms of their inclusion graphs, and as a corollary we answer an open question from \cite{VC1} about leaving out elements from shattering-extremal set systems in the case of families of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension $2$.
Bounding Embeddings of VC Classes into Maximum Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
One of the earliest conjectures in computational learning theory-the Sample Compression conjecture-asserts that concept classes (equivalently set systems) admit compression schemes of size linear in their VC dimension. To-date this statement is known to be true for maximum classes---those that possess maximum cardinality for their VC dimension. The most promising approach to positively resolving the conjecture is by embedding general VC classes into maximum classes without super-linear increase to their VC dimensions, as such embeddings would extend the known compression schemes to all VC classes. We show that maximum classes can be characterised by a local-connectivity property of the graph obtained by viewing the class as a cubical complex. This geometric characterisation of maximum VC classes is applied to prove a negative embedding result which demonstrates VC-d classes that cannot be embedded in any maximum class of VC dimension lower than 2d. On the other hand, we show that every VC-d class C embeds in a VC-(d+D) maximum class where D is the deficiency of C, i.e., the difference between the cardinalities of a maximum VC-d class and of C. For VC-2 classes in binary n-cubes for 4 <= n <= 6, we give best possible results on embedding into maximum classes. For some special classes of Boolean functions, relationships with maximum classes are investigated. Finally we give a general recursive procedure for embedding VC-d classes into VC-(d+k) maximum classes for smallest k.

The Regularity Lemma with bounded VC Dimension
We give a proof of Szemeredi's regularity lemma in the special case of a graph with bounded VC dimension and show that it is possible to obtain "merely" doubly exponential bounds on the size of the partition in this case.

Shattering-Extremal Systems
The Shatters relation and the VC dimension have been investigated since the early seventies. These concepts have found numerous applications in statistics, combinatorics, learning theory and computational geometry. Shattering extremal systems are set-systems with a very rich structure and many different characterizations. The goal of this thesis is to elaborate on the structure of these systems.

VC dimension of ellipsoids
We will establish that the VC dimension of the class of d-dimensional ellipsoids is (d^2+3d)/2, and that maximum likelihood estimate with N-component d-dimensional Gaussian mixture models induces a geometric class having VC dimension at least N(d^2+3d)/2. Keywords: VC dimension; finite dimensional ellipsoid; Gaussian mixture model
A Geometric Approach to Sample Compression
The Sample Compression Conjecture of Littlestone & Warmuth has remained unsolved for over two decades. This paper presents a systematic geometric investigation of the compression of finite maximum concept classes. Simple arrangements of hyperplanes in Hyperbolic space, and Piecewise-Linear hyperplane arrangements, are shown to represent maximum classes, generalizing the corresponding Euclidean result. A main result is that PL arrangements can be swept by a moving hyperplane to unlabeled d-compress any finite maximum class, forming a peeling scheme as conjectured by Kuzmin & Warmuth. A corollary is that some d-maximal classes cannot be embedded into any maximum class of VC dimension d+k, for any constant k. The construction of the PL sweeping involves Pachner moves on the one-inclusion graph, corresponding to moves of a hyperplane across the intersection of d other hyperplanes. This extends the well known Pachner moves for triangulations to cubical complexes.

On the boolean-width of a graph: structure and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the recently introduced boolean-width of graphs. Our structural results are as follows. Firstly, we show that almost surely the boolean-width of a random graph on $n$ vertices is $O(\log^2 n)$, and it is easy to find the corresponding decomposition tree. Secondly, for any constant $d$ a graph of maximum degree $d$ has boolean-width linear in treewidth. This implies that almost surely the boolean-width of a (sparse) random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices is linear in $n$. Thirdly, we show that the boolean-cut value is well approximated by VC dimension of corresponding set system. Since VC dimension is widely studied, we hope that this structural result will prove helpful in better understanding of boolean-width. Combining our first structural result with algorithms from Bui-Xuan et al \cite{BTV09,BTV09II} we get for random graphs quasi-polynomial $O^*(2^{O(\log ^4 n)})$ time algorithms for a large class of vertex subset and vertex partitioning problems.

Entropy, dimension and the Elton-Pajor Theorem
The Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of a set K in R^n is the maximal dimension of the coordinate cube of a given size, which can be found in coordinate projections of K. We show that the VC dimension of a convex body governs its entropy. This has a number of consequences, including the optimal Elton's theorem and a uniform central limit theorem in the real valued case.
