Anti-Ramsey numbers of graphs with some decomposition family sequences
For a given graph $H$, the anti-Ramsey number of $H$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a complete graph which does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we extend the decomposition family of graphs to the decomposition family sequence of graphs and show that $K_5$ is determined by its decomposition family sequence. Based on this new graph notation, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers for new families of graphs, including the Petersen graph, vertex-disjoint union of cliques, etc., and characterize the extremal colorings.

Zero-one Schubert polynomials
We prove that if $σ\in S_m$ is a pattern of $w \in S_n$, then we can express the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ as a monomial times $\mathfrak{S}_σ$ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar's orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $\mathfrak{S}_w$ being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is equal to the integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron.
A linear bound on the k-rendezvous time for primitive sets of NZ matrices
A set of nonnegative matrices is called primitive if there exists a product of these matrices that is entrywise positive. Motivated by recent results relating synchronizing automata and primitive sets, we study the length of the shortest product of a primitive set having a column or a row with k positive entries, called its k-rendezvous time (k-RT}), in the case of sets of matrices having no zero rows and no zero columns. We prove that the k-RT is at most linear w.r.t. the matrix size n for small k, while the problem is still open for synchronizing automata. We provide two upper bounds on the k-RT: the second is an improvement of the first one, although the latter can be written in closed form. We then report numerical results comparing our upper bounds on the k-RT with heuristic approximation methods.
Leading terms of $\text{SL}_3$ web invariants
We use Khovanov and Kuperberg's web growth rules to identify the minimal term in the invariant associated to an $\text{SL}_3$ web diagram, with respect to a particular term order.

A limit theorem for small cliques in inhomogeneous random graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 97 (2021), no. 4, 578-599 • View Publication • BIB
The theory of graphons comes with a natural sampling procedure, which results in an inhomogeneous variant of the Erdős--Rényi random graph, called $W$-random graphs. We prove, via the method of moments, a limit theorem for the number of $r$-cliques in such random graphs. We show that, whereas in the case of dense Erdős--Rényi random graphs the fluctuations are normal of order $n^{r-1}$, the fluctuations in the setting of $W$-random graphs may be of order $0, n^{r-1}$, or $n^{r-0.5}$. Furthermore, when the fluctuations are of order $n^{r-0.5}$ they are normal, while when the fluctuations are of order $n^{r-1}$ they exhibit either normal or a particular type of chi-square behavior whose parameters relate to spectral properties of $W$. These results can also be deduced from a general setting [Janson and Nowicki, PTRF 1991], based on the projection method. In addition to providing alternative proofs, our approach makes direct links to the theory of graphons.

Functorial invariants of trees and their cones
We study the category whose objects are trees (with or without roots) and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian, and we study two natural families of modules over these categories. The first takes a tree to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space, or to the homology of the unordered configuration space of its cone. The second takes a tree to a graded piece of the intersection homology of the reciprocal plane of its cone, which is a vector space whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficient. We prove finite generation results for each of these modules, which allow us to obtain results about the growth of Betti numbers of configuration spaces and of Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of graphical matroids.

Cyclically covering subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$
A subspace of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is called cyclically covering if every vector in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ has a cyclic shift which is inside the subspace. Let $h_2(n)$ denote the largest possible codimension of a cyclically covering subspace of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$. We show that $h_2(p)= 2$ for every prime $p$ such that 2 is a primitive root modulo $p$, which, assuming Artin's conjecture, answers a question of Peter Cameron from 1991. We also prove various bounds on $h_2(ab)$ depending on $h_2(a)$ and $h_2(b)$ and extend some of our results to a more general set-up proposed by Cameron, Ellis and Raynaud.

More on the extremal number of subdivisions
Given a graph $H$, the extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)$ is the largest number of edges in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We make progress on a number of conjectures about the extremal number of bipartite graphs. First, writing $K'_{s,t}$ for the subdivision of the bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, we show that $\mathrm{ex}(n, K'_{s,t}) = O(n^{3/2 - \frac{1}{2s}})$. This proves a conjecture of Kang, Kim and Liu and is tight up to the implied constant for $t$ sufficiently large in terms of $s$. Second, for any integers $s, k \geq 1$, we show that $\mathrm{ex}(n, L) = Θ(n^{1 + \frac{s}{sk+1}})$ for a particular graph $L$ depending on $s$ and $k$, answering another question of Kang, Kim and Liu. This result touches upon an old conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits, which asserts that every rational number $r \in (1,2)$ is realisable in the sense that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H) = Θ(n^r)$ for some appropriate graph $H$, giving infinitely many new realisable exponents and implying that $1 + 1/k$ is a limit point of realisable exponents for all $k \geq 1$. Writing $H^k$ for the $k$-subdivision of a graph $H$, this result also implies that for any bipartite graph $H$ and any $k$, there exists $δ> 0$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H^{k-1}) = O(n^{1 + 1/k - δ})$, partially resolving a question of Conlon and Lee. Third, extending a recent result of Conlon and Lee, we show that any bipartite graph $H$ with maximum degree $r$ on one side which does not contain $C_4$ as a subgraph satisfies $\mathrm{ex}(n, H) = o(n^{2 - 1/r})$.

On weak majority dimensions of digraphs
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the weak majority dimension of a digraph which is well-defined for any digraph. We first study properties shared by the weak dimension of a digraph and show that a weak majority dimension of a digraph can be arbitrarily large. Then we present a complete characterization of digraphs of weak majority dimension $0$ and $1$, respectively, and show that every digraph with weak majority dimension at most two is transitive. Finally, we compute the weak majority dimensions of directed paths and directed cycles and pose open problems.

A Note on the Exponents of Primitive Companion Matrices
A nonnegative matrix $A$ is said to be {\it primitive} if for some positive integer $m$, entries in $A^m$ are positive, notationally represented as $A^m>0.$ The smallest such $m$ is called the {\it exponent} of $A$, denoted $exp(A).$ For the class of primitive companion matrices $X$, we find $exp(A)$ for certain $A \in X.$ Thereafter, we find certain numbers in $E_n(X)$, where $E_n(X)=\{m \in \N : \text{there exists an $n \times n$ matrix $A$ in $X$ with} \; exp(A)=m\}$. At the end we propose open problems for further research.

Continued fractions associated with the topological index of the caterpillar-bond graph
In this paper, we give graphs whose topological index are exactly equal to the number $u_n$, satisfying the three term recurrence relation $$ u_n=a u_{n-1}+b u_{n-2}\quad(n\ge 2)\quad u_0=0\quad\hbox{and}\quad u_1=u\,, $$ where $a$, $b$ and $u$ are positive integers. We show an interpretation from the continued fraction expansion in a more general case, so that the topological index can be computed easily. On the contrary, for any given positive integer $N$, we can find the graphs (trees) whose topological indices are exactly equal to $N$.
Coded trace reconstruction
Motivated by average-case trace reconstruction and coding for portable DNA-based storage systems, we initiate the study of \emph{coded trace reconstruction}, the design and analysis of high-rate efficiently encodable codes that can be efficiently decoded with high probability from few reads (also called \emph{traces}) corrupted by edit errors. Codes used in current portable DNA-based storage systems with nanopore sequencers are largely based on heuristics, and have no provable robustness or performance guarantees even for an error model with i.i.d.\ deletions and constant deletion probability. Our work is a first step towards the design of efficient codes with provable guarantees for such systems. We consider a constant rate of i.i.d.\ deletions, and perform an analysis of marker-based code-constructions. This gives rise to codes with redundancy $O(n/\log n)$ (resp.\ $O(n/\log\log n)$) that can be efficiently reconstructed from $\exp(O(\log^{2/3}n))$ (resp.\ $\exp(O(\log\log n)^{2/3})$) traces, where $n$ is the message length. Then, we give a construction of a code with $O(\log n)$ bits of redundancy that can be efficiently reconstructed from $\textrm{poly}(n)$ traces if the deletion probability is small enough. Finally, we show how to combine both approaches, giving rise to an efficient code with $O(n/\log n)$ bits of redundancy which can be reconstructed from $\textrm{poly}(\log n)$ traces for a small constant deletion probability.

Bipartite Graphs as Polynomials, and Polynomials as Bipartite Graphs (with a view towards dividing in $\mathbb{N}[x],$ $\mathbb{N}[x,y]$)
The aim of this paper is to show that any finite undirected bipartite graph can be considered as a polynomial $p \in \mathbb{N}[x]$, and any directed finite bipartite graph can be considered as a polynomial $p\in\mathbb{N}[x,y]$, and vise verse. We also show that the multiplication in semirings $\mathbb{N}[x]$, $\mathbb{N}[x,y]$ correspondences to a operations of the corresponding graphs which looks like a ``perturbed'' products of graphs. As an application, we give a new point of view to dividing in semirings $\mathbb{N}[x]$, $\mathbb{N}[x,y]$. Finally, we endow the set of all bipartite graphs with the Zariski topology.
Contribution of one-cylinder square-tiled surfaces to Masur-Veech volumes
Published in Astérisque No. 415, Quelques aspects de la théorie des systèmes dynamiques: un hommage à Jean-Christophe Yoccoz. I (2020), 223--274 • View Publication • BIB
We compute explicitly the absolute contribution of square-tiled surfaces having a single horizontal cylinder to the Masur-Veech volume of any ambient stratum of Abelian differentials. The resulting count is particularly simple and efficient in the large genus asymptotics. Using the recent results of Aggarwal and of Chen-Moeller-Zagier on the long-standing conjecture about the large genus asymptotics of Masur-Veech volumes, we derive that the relative contribution is asymptotically of the order 1/d, where d is the dimension of the stratum. Similarly, we evaluate the contribution of one-cylinder square-tiled surfaces to Masur-Veech volumes of low-dimensional strata in the moduli space of quadratic differentials. We combine this count with our recent result on equidistribution of one-cylinder square-tiled surfaces translated to the language of interval exchange transformations to compute empirically approximate values of the Masur-Veech volumes of strata of quadratic differentials of all small dimensions.
Panchromatic patterns by paths
Let $H=(V_H,A_H)$ be a digraph, possibly with loops, and let $D=(V_D, A_D)$ be a loopless multidigraph with a colouring of its arcs $c: A_D \rightarrow V_H$. An $H$-path of $D$ is a path $(v_0, \dots, v_n)$ of $D$ such that $(c(v_{i-1}, v_i), c(v_i,v_{i+1}))$ is an arc of $H$ for every $1 \le i \le n-1$. For $u, v \in V_D$, we say that $u$ reaches $v$ by $H$-paths if there exists an $H$-path from $u$ to $v$ in $D$. A subset $S \subseteq V_D$ is $H$-absorbent of $D$ if every vertex in $V_D-S$ reaches by $H$-paths some vertex in $S$, and it is $H$-independent if no vertex in $S$ can reach another (different) vertex in $S$ by $H$-pahts. An $H$-kernel is an independent by $H$-paths and absorbent by $H$-paths subset of $V_D$. We define $\tilde{\mathscr{B}}_1$ as the set of digraphs $H$ such that any $H$-arc-coloured tournament has an $H$-absorbent by paths vertex; the set $\tilde{\mathscr{B}}_2$ consists of the digraphs $H$ such that any $H$-arc-coloured digraph $D$ has an independent, $H$-absorbent by paths set; analogously, the set $\tilde{\mathscr{B}}_3$ is the set of digraphs $H$ such that every $H$-arc-coloured digraph $D$ contains an $H$-kernel by paths. In this work, we present a characterization of $\tilde{\mathscr{B}}_2$, and provide structural properties of the digraphs in $\tilde{\mathscr{B}}_3$ which settle up its characterization except for the analysis of a single digraph on three vertices.
Quasi-total Roman domination in graphs
A quasi-total Roman dominating function on a graph $G=(V, E)$ is a function $f : V \rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ satisfying the following: - every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) =2$, and - if $x$ is an isolated vertex in the subgraph induced by the set of vertices labeled with 1 and 2, then $f(x)=1$. The weight of a quasi-total Roman dominating function is the value $ω(f)=f(V)=\sum_{u\in V} f(u)$. The minimum weight of a quasi-total Roman dominating function on a graph $G$ is called the quasi-total Roman domination number of $G$. We introduce the quasi-total Roman domination number of graphs in this article, and begin the study of its combinatorial and computational properties.

Density and Fractal Property of the Class of Oriented Trees
We show the density theorem for the class of finite oriented trees ordered by the homomorphism order. We also show that every interval of oriented trees, in addition to be dense, is in fact universal. We end by considering the fractal property in the class of all finite digraphs.

New Constructions of Group-Invariant Butson Hadamard Matrices
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $h$ be a positive integer. A $\text{BH}(G,h)$ matrix is a $G$-invariant $|G|\times |G|$ matrix $H$ whose entries are complex $h$th roots of unity such that $HH^*=|G|I_{|G|}$, where $H^*$ denotes the complex conjugate transpose of $H$, and $I_{|G|}$ is the identity matrix of order $|G|$. In this paper, we give three new constructions of $\text{BH}(G,h)$ matrices. The first construction is the first known family of $\text{BH}(G,h)$ matrices in which $G$ does not need to be abelian. The second and the third constructions are two families of $\text{BH}(G,h)$ matrices in which $G$ is a finite local ring.
The average size of matchings in graphs
In this paper, we consider the average size of independent edge sets, also called matchings, in a graph. We characterize the extremal graphs for the average size of matchings in general graphs and trees. In addition, we obtain inequalities between the average size of matchings and the number of matchings as well as the matching energy, which is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial.

The Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations
A family of permutations called 2-clumped permutations forms a basis for a sub-Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. The 2-clumped permutations are in bijection with certain decompositions of a square into rectangles, called generic rectangulations. Thus, we can describe the Hopf algebra of 2-clumped permutations using generic rectangulations (we call this isomorphic Hopf algebra the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations). In this paper, we describe the cover relations in a lattice of generic rectangulations that is a lattice quotient of the right weak order on permutations. We then use this lattice to describe the product and coproduct operations in the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations.
