On Existentially Complete Triangle-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $k$, we say that a graph is $k$-existentially complete if for every $0 \leq a \leq k$, and every tuple of distinct vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_a$, $y_1,\ldots,y_{k-a}$, there exists a vertex $z$ that is joined to all of the vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_a$ and none of the vertices $y_1,\ldots,y_{k-a}$. While it is easy to show that the binomial random graph $G_{n,1/2}$ satisfies this property with high probability for $k \sim c\log n$, little is known about the "triangle-free" version of this problem; does there exist a finite triangle-free graph $G$ with a similar "extension property". This question was first raised by Cherlin in 1993 and remains open even in the case $k=4$. We show that there are no $k$-existentially complete triangle-free graphs with $k >\frac{8\log n}{\log\log n}$, thus giving the first non-trivial, non-existence result on this "old chestnut" of Cherlin. We believe that this result breaks through a natural barrier in our understanding of the problem.

On $m$-Closed Graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 21, Issue 4 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
A graph is closed when its vertices have a labeling by $[n]$ such that the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to the lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > \cdots > x_n > y_1> \cdots > y_n$. In this paper, we generalize this notion and study the so called $m-$closed graphs. We find equivalent condition to $3-$closed property of an arbitrary tree $T$. Using it, we classify a class of $3-$closed trees. The primary decomposition of this class of graphs is also studied.

Circumference of 3-connected cubic graphs
Published in J. Comb. Theory B, 128 (2018) 134-159 • View Publication • BIB
The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Jackson established a conjecture of Bondy by showing that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic graph of order $n$ is $Ω(n^{0.694})$. Bilinski {\it et al.} improved this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.753})$ by studying large Eulerian subgraphs in 3-edge-connected graphs. In this paper, we further improve this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.8})$. This is done by considering certain 2-connected cubic graphs, finding cycles through two given edges, and distinguishing the cases whether or not these edges are adjacent.

A lower bound on the size of an absorbing set in an arc-coloured tournament
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bousquet, Lochet and Thomassé recently gave an elegant proof that for any integer $n$, there is a least integer $f(n)$ such that any tournament whose arcs are coloured with $n$ colours contains a subset of vertices $S$ of size $f(n)$ with the property that any vertex not in $S$ admits a monochromatic path to some vertex of $S$. In this note we provide a lower bound on the value $f(n)$.
Hamiltonicity of edge-chromatic critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, denote by $Δ$ and $χ^\prime$ the maximum degree and the chromatic index of $G$, respectively. A simple graph $G$ is called {\it edge-$Δ$-critical} if $χ^\prime(G)=Δ+1$ and $χ^\prime(H)\leΔ$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$. We proved that every edge chromatic critical graph of order $n$ with maximum degree at least $\frac{2n}{3}+12$ is Hamiltonian.

On the zeroth-order general Randić index, variable sum exdeg index and trees having vertices with prescribed degree
Published in Discrete Math. Algorithm. Appl. 10 (2018) Art# 1850015 • View Publication • BIB
The zeroth-order general Randić index (usually denoted by $R_α^{0}$) and variable sum exdeg index (denoted by $SEI_{a}$) of a graph $G$ are defined as $R_α^{0}(G)= \sum_{v\in V(G)} (d_{v})^α$ and $SEI_{a}(G)= \sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{v}a^{d_{v}}$ where $d_{v}$ is degree of the vertex $v\in V(G)$, $a$ is a positive real number different from 1 and $α$ is a real number other than $0$ and $1$. A segment of a tree is a path $P$, whose terminal vertices are branching or pendent, and all non-terminal vertices (if exist) of $P$ have degree 2. For $n\ge6$, let $\mathbb{PT}_{n,n_1}$, $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$, $\mathbb{BT}_{n,b}$ be the collections of all $n$-vertex trees having $n_1$ pendent vertices, $k$ segments, $b$ branching vertices, respectively. In this paper, all the trees with extremum (maximum and minimum) zeroth-order general Randić index and variable sum exdeg index are determined from the collections $\mathbb{PT}_{n,n_1}$, $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$, $\mathbb{BT}_{n,b}$. The obtained extremal trees for the collection $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$ are also extremal trees for the collection of all $n$-vertex trees having fixed number of vertices with degree 2 (because it is already known that the number of segments of a tree $T$ can be determined from the number of vertices of $T$ with degree 2 and vise versa).

On Rainbow Hamilton Cycles in Random Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H_{n,p,r}^{(k)}$ denote a randomly colored random hypergraph, constructed on the vertex set $[n]$ by taking each $k$-tuple independently with probability $p$, and then independently coloring it with a random color from the set $[r]$. Let $H$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$. An $\ell$-Hamilton cycle is a spanning subhypergraph $C$ of $H$ with $n/(k-\ell)$ edges and such that for some cyclic ordering of the vertices each edge of $C$ consists of $k$ consecutive vertices and every pair of adjacent edges in $C$ intersects in precisely $\ell$ vertices. In this note we study the existence of rainbow $\ell$-Hamilton cycles (that is every edge receives a different color) in $H_{n,p,r}^{(k)}$. We mainly focus on the most restrictive case when $r = n/(k-\ell)$. In particular, we show that for the so called tight Hamilton cycles ($\ell=k-1$) $p = e^2/n$ is the sharp threshold for the existence of a rainbow tight Hamilton cycle in $H_{n,p,n}^{(k)}$ for each $k\ge 4$.

Short Presburger arithmetic is hard
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the computational complexity of short sentences in Presburger arithmetic (Short-PA). Here by "short" we mean sentences with a bounded number of variables, quantifiers, inequalities and Boolean operations; the input consists only of the integer coefficients involved in the linear inequalities. We prove that satisfiability of Short-PA sentences with $m+2$ alternating quantifiers is $Σ_{P}^m$-complete or $Π_{P}^m$-complete, when the first quantifier is $\exists$ or $\forall$, respectively. Counting versions and restricted systems are also analyzed. Further application are given to hardness of two natural problems in Integer Optimizations.

ZFC independence and subset sum
We study recursively defined functions associated with directed graphs on the k dimensional nonnegative integral lattice. The existence of certain combinatorial structures associated with these function classes are shown to be independent of the ZFC axioms of mathematics. These structures, in a natural way, give rise to sets of instances to the subset sum problem. We use this connection to make some observations about ZFC independence and the subset sum problem.

The $M$-Polynomial and Topological Indices of Generalized Möbius Ladder and Its Line Graph
The $M$-polynomial was introduced by Deutsch and Klavžar in 2015 as a graph polynomial to provide an easy way to find closed formulas of degree-based topological indices, which are used to predict physical, chemical, and pharmacological properties of organic molecules. In this paper we give general closed forms of the $M$-polynomial of the generalized Möbius ladder and its line graph. We also compute Zagreb Indices, generalized Randić indices, and symmetric division index of these graphs via the $M$-polynomial.
Counting quadrant walks via Tutte's invariant method
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 1 (2021), paper # 3 • View Publication • BIB
In the 1970s, William Tutte developed a clever algebraic approach, based on certain "invariants", to solve a functional equation that arises in the enumeration of properly colored triangulations. The enumeration of plane lattice walks confined to the first quadrant is governed by similar equations, and has led in the past 20 years to a rich collection of attractive results dealing with the nature (algebraic, D-finite or not) of the associated generating function, depending on the set of allowed steps, taken in $\{-1, 0,1\}^2$. We first adapt Tutte's approach to prove (or reprove) the algebraicity of all quadrant models known or conjectured to be algebraic. This includes Gessel's famous model, and the first proof ever found for one model with weighted steps. To be applicable, the method requires the existence of two rational functions called invariant and decoupling function respectively. When they exist, algebraicity follows almost automatically. Then, we move to a complex analytic viewpoint that has already proved very powerful, leading in particular to integral expressions for the generating function in the non-D-finite cases, as well as to proofs of non-D-finiteness. We develop in this context a weaker notion of invariant. Now all quadrant models have invariants, and for those that have in addition a decoupling function, we obtain integral-free expressions for the generating function, and a proof that this series is D-algebraic (that is, satisfies polynomial differential equations).
An algebraic Monte-Carlo algorithm for the Partition Adjacency Matrix realization problem
Published in Alg. Stat. 12 (2021) 115-124 • View Publication • BIB
The graphical realization of a given degree sequence and given partition adjacency matrix simultaneously is a relevant problem in data driven modeling of networks. Here we formulate common generalizations of this problem and the Exact Matching Problem, and solve them with an algebraic Monte-Carlo algorithm that runs in polynomial time if the number of partition classes is bounded.

On weak peak quasisymmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 158 (2018), 449--491 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we construct the weak version of peak quasisymmetric functions inside the Hopf algebra of weak composition quasisymmetric functions (WCQSym) defined by Guo, Thibon and Yu. Weak peak quasisymmetric functions (WPQSym) are studied in several aspects. First we find a natural basis of WPQSym lifting Stembridge's peak functions. Then we confirm that WPQSym is a Hopf subalgebra of WCQSym by giving explicit multiplication, comultiplication and antipode formulas. By extending Stembridge's descent-to-peak maps, we also show that WPQSym is a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. On the other hand, we prove that WPQSym embeds as a Rota-Baxter subalgebra of WCQSym, thus of the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator. Moreover, WPQSym can also be a Rota-Baxter quotient algebra of WCQSym.

Two-Dimensional Indirect Binary Search for the Positive One-in-Three Satisfiability Problem
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the positive one-in-three satisfiability problem (Pos1in3SAT). The proposed algorithm can efficiently decide the existence of a satisfying assignment in all assignments for a given formula by using a 2-dimensional binary search method without constructing an exponential number of assignments.
Real inflection points of real hyperelliptic curves
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a real hyperelliptic algebraic curve $X$ with non-empty real part and a real effective divisor $\mc{D}$ arising via pullback from $\mathbb{P}^1$ under the hyperelliptic structure map, we study the real inflection points of the associated complete real linear series $|\mc{D}|$ on $X$. To do so we use Viro's patchworking of real plane curves, recast in the context of some Berkovich spaces studied by M. Jonsson. Our method gives a simpler and more explicit alternative to limit linear series on metrized complexes of curves, as developed by O. Amini and M. Baker, for curves embedded in toric surfaces.

Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the derangement graph for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ where $q$ is a prime power. We calculate all eigenvalues for this derangement graph and use these eigenvalues to prove that $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ has the Erdős-Ko-Rado property and, provided that $q\neq 2, 5$, another property that we call the {\textsl Erdős-Ko-Rado module property}.

The extremal function for bipartite linklessly embeddable graphs
Published in Combinatorica. 39 (2019), 1081-1104 • View Publication • BIB
An embedding of a graph in $3$-space is linkless if for every two disjoint cycles there exists an embedded ball that contains one of the cycles and is disjoint from the other. We prove that every bipartite linklessly embeddable (simple) graph on $n\ge5$ vertices has at most $3n-10$ edges, unless it is isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,n-3}$.

Popular progression differences in vector spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Green proved an arithmetic analogue of Szemerédi's celebrated regularity lemma and used it to verify a conjecture of Bergelson, Host, and Kra which sharpens Roth's theorem on three-term arithmetic progressions in dense sets. It shows that for every subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ with $n$ sufficiently large, the density of three-term arithmetic progressions with some nonzero common difference is at least the random bound (the cube of the set density) up to an additive $ε$. For a fixed odd prime $p$, we prove that the required dimension grows as an exponential tower of $p$'s of height $Θ(\log(1/ε))$. This improves both the lower and upper bound, and is the first example of a result where a tower-type bound coming from applying a regularity lemma is shown to be necessary.

Popular progression differences in vector spaces II
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2019:16, 39 pp • View Publication • BIB
Green used an arithmetic analogue of Szemerédi's celebrated regularity lemma to prove the following strengthening of Roth's theorem in vector spaces. For every $α>0$, $β<α^3$, and prime number $p$, there is a least positive integer $n_p(α,β)$ such that if $n \geq n_p(α,β)$, then for every subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of density at least $α$ there is a nonzero $d$ for which the density of three-term arithmetic progressions with common difference $d$ is at least $β$. We determine for $p \geq 19$ the tower height of $n_p(α,β)$ up to an absolute constant factor and an additive term depending only on $p$. In particular, if we want half the random bound (so $β=α^3/2$), then the dimension $n$ required is a tower of twos of height $Θ\left((\log p) \log \log (1/α)\right)$. It turns out that the tower height in general takes on a different form in several different regions of $α$ and $β$, and different arguments are used both in the upper and lower bounds to handle these cases.
