AGC, t-designs and partition sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
AG codes correspond geometrically to points in the Grassmannian of k-planes in an n-dimensional projective space PG(n, F_q) defined over a finite field F_q of q elements. We prove that invariant subgrassmannians by the action of a triangle group hold a t-design of determined parameters.

The Göpel variety
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we will prove that the six-dimensional Göpel variety in $P^{134}$ is generated by 120 linear, 35 cubic and 35 quartic relations. This result was already obtained in [RS] , but the authors used a statement in [Co] saying that the Göpel variety set theoretically is generated by the linear and cubic relations alone. Unfortunately this statement is false. There are 120 extra points. Nevertheless the results stated in [RS] are correct. There are required several changes that we will illustrate in some detail

Asymptotic Expansion of Warlimont Functions on Wright Semigroups
Published in Involve 12 (2019) 1081-1098 • View Publication • BIB
We calculate full asymptotic expansions of prime-independent multiplicative functions on additive arithmetic semigroups that satisfy a strong form of Knopfmacher's axioms. When applied to the semigroup of unlabeled graphs, our method yields detailed asymptotic information on how graphs decompose into connected components. As a second class of examples, we discuss polynomials in several variables over a finite field.

Popular differences and generalized Sidon sets
Published in J. Number Theory 186 (2018), 103-120 • View Publication • BIB
For a subset $A \subseteq [N]$, we define the representation function $ r_{A-A}(d) := \#\{(a,a') \in A \times A : d = a - a'\}$ and define $M_D(A) := \max_{1 \leq d < D} r_{A-A}(d)$ for $D>1$. We study the smallest possible value of $M_D(A)$ as $A$ ranges over all possible subsets of $[N]$ with a given size. We give explicit asymptotic expressions with constant coefficients determined for a large range of $D$. We shall also see how this problem connects to a well-known problem about generalized Sidon sets.

On the accuracy of ancestral sequence reconstruction for ultrametric trees with parsimony
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine a mathematical question concerning the reconstruction accuracy of the Fitch algorithm for reconstructing the ancestral sequence of the most recent common ancestor given a phylogenetic tree and sequence data for all taxa under consideration. In particular, for the symmetric 4-state substitution model which is also known as Jukes-Cantor model, we answer affirmatively a conjecture of Li, Steel and Zhang which states that for any ultrametric phylogenetic tree and a symmetric model, the Fitch parsimony method using all terminal taxa is more accurate, or at least as accurate, for ancestral state reconstruction than using any particular terminal taxon or any particular pair of taxa. This conjecture had so far only been answered for two-state data by Fischer and Thatte. Here, we focus on answering the biologically more relevant case with four states, which corresponds to ancestral sequence reconstruction from DNA or RNA data.

A characterization of Hermitian varieties as codewords
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the Hermitian varieties are codewords in the code defined by the points and hyperplanes of the projective spaces $PG(r,q^2)$. In finite geometry, also quasi-Hermitian varieties are defined. These are sets of points of $PG(r,q^2)$ of the same size as a non-singular Hermitian variety of $PG(r,q^2)$, having the same intersection sizes with the hyperplanes of $PG(r,q^2)$. In the planar case, this reduces to the definition of a unital. A famous result of Blokhuis, Brouwer, and Wilbrink states that every unital in the code of the points and lines of $PG(2,q^2)$ is a Hermitian curve. We prove a similar result for the quasi-Hermitian varieties in $PG(3,q^2)$, $q=p^{h}$, as well as in $PG(r,q^2)$, $q=p$ prime, or $q=p^2$, $p$ prime, and $r\geq 4$.

Recognizing and testing isomorphism of Cayley graphs over an abelian group of order $4p$ in polynomial time
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a polynomial-time algorithm that given a graph $X$ with $4p$ vertices ($p$ is prime), finds (if any) a Cayley representation of $X$ over the group $C_2\times C_2\times C_p$. This result, together with the known similar result for circulant graphs, shows that recognising and testing isomorphism of Cayley graphs over an abelian group of order $4p$ can be done in polynomial time.

Bernoulli Correlations and Cut Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $n$ symmetric Bernoulli variables, what can be said about their correlation matrix viewed as a vector? We show that the set of those vectors $R(\mathcal{B}_n)$ is a polytope and identify its vertices. Those extreme points correspond to correlation vectors associated to the discrete uniform distributions on diagonals of the cube $[0,1]^n$. We also show that the polytope is affinely isomorphic to a well-known cut polytope ${\rm CUT}(n)$ which is defined as a convex hull of the cut vectors in a complete graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. The isomorphism is obtained explicitly as $R(\mathcal{B}_n)= {\mathbf{1}}-2~{\rm CUT}(n)$. As a corollary of this work, it is straightforward using linear programming to determine if a particular correlation matrix is realizable or not. Furthermore, a sampling method for multivariate symmetric Bernoullis with given correlation is obtained. In some cases the method can also be used for general, not exclusively Bernoulli, marginals.
Maximal Planar Subgraphs of Fixed Girth in Random Graphs
In 1991, Bollobás and Frieze showed that the threshold for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a spanning maximal planar subgraph is very close to $p = n^{-1/3}$. In this paper, we compute similar threshold ranges for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal bipartite planar subgraph and for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal planar subgraph of fixed girth $g$.

Snarks with special spanning trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a cubic graph which has a decomposition into a spanning tree $T$ and a $2$-regular subgraph $C$, i.e. $E(T) \cup E(C) = E(G)$ and $E(T) \cap E(C) = \emptyset$. We provide an answer to the following question: which lengths can the cycles of $C$ have if $G$ is a snark? Note that $T$ is a hist (i.e. a spanning tree without a vertex of degree two) and that every cubic graph with a hist has the above decomposition.

Double jump phase transition in a soliton cellular automaton
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider the soliton cellular automaton introduced in [Takahashi 1990] with a random initial configuration. We give multiple constructions of a Young diagram describing various statistics of the system in terms of familiar objects like birth-and-death chains and Galton-Watson forests. Using these ideas, we establish limit theorems showing that if the first $n$ boxes are occupied independently with probability $p\in(0,1)$, then the number of solitons is of order $n$ for all $p$, and the length of the longest soliton is of order $\log n$ for $p<1/2$, order $\sqrt{n}$ for $p=1/2$, and order $n$ for $p>1/2$. Additionally, we uncover a condensation phenomenon in the supercritical regime: For each fixed $j\geq 1$, the top $j$ soliton lengths have the same order as the longest for $p\leq 1/2$, whereas all but the longest have order at most $\log n$ for $p>1/2$. As an application, we obtain scaling limits for the lengths of the $k^{\text{th}}$ longest increasing and decreasing subsequences in a random stack-sortable permutation of length $n$ in terms of random walks and Brownian excursions.

$H$-free subgraphs of dense graphs maximizing the number of cliques and their blow-ups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the structure of $H$-free subgraphs of graphs with high minimal degree. We prove that for every $k>m$ there exists an $ε:=ε(k,m)>0$ so that the following holds. For every graph $H$ with chromatic number $k$ from which one can delete an edge and reduce the chromatic number, and for every graph $G$ on $n>n_0(H)$ vertices in which all degrees are at least $(1-ε)n$, any subgraph of $G$ which is $H$-free and contains the maximum number of copies of the complete graph $K_m$ is $(k-1)$-colorable. We also consider several extensions for the case of a general forbidden graph $H$ of a given chromatic number, and for subgraphs maximizing the number of copies of balanced blowups of complete graphs.

Balanced words in higher dimensions
For $d\ge 1$, a word $w\in \{ 0,1\}^{\Z^d}$ is called balanced if there exists $M > 0$ such that for any two rectangles $R, R^{'}\subset\Z^d$ that are translates of each other, the number of occurrences of the symbol $1$ in $R$ and $R^{'}$ differ by at most $M$. It is known that for every balanced word $w$, the asymptotic frequency of the symbol $1$ ( called the density of $w$ ) exists. In this paper we show that there exist two dimensional balanced words with irrational densities, answering a question raised by Berthé and Tijdeman.

Ramanujan-type congruences for $2$-color partition triples
Let ${p}_{3,3}(n)$ denote the number of $2$-color partition triples of $n$ where one of the colors appears only in parts that are multiples of $3$. In this paper, we shall establish some interesting Ramanujan-type congruences for ${p}_{3,3}(n)$.
Recognizing hyperelliptic graphs in polynomial time
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, a new set of multigraph parameters was defined, called "gonalities". Gonality bears some similarity to treewidth, and is a relevant graph parameter for problems in number theory and multigraph algorithms. Multigraphs of gonality 1 are trees. We consider so-called "hyperelliptic graphs" (multigraphs of gonality 2) and provide a safe and complete sets of reduction rules for such multigraphs, showing that for three of the flavors of gonality, we can recognize hyperelliptic graphs in O(n log n+m) time, where n is the number of vertices and m the number of edges of the multigraph.

On transitive designs and strongly regular graphs constructed from Mathieu group $M_{11}$
In this paper we construct structures from Mathieu group $M_{11}$. We classify transitive $t$-designs with 11, 12 and 22 points admitting a transitive action of Mathieu group $M_{11}$. Thereby we proved the existence of designs with parameters 3-(22,7,18) and found first simple designs with parameters 4-(11,5,6) and 5-(12,6,6). Additionally, we proved the existence of $2$-designs with certain parameters having 55 and 66 points. Furthermore, we classified strongly regular graphs on at most 450 vertices admitting a transitive action of the Mathieu group $M_{11}$.

Block partitions: an extended view
Given a sequence $S=(s_1,\dots,s_m) \in [0, 1]^m$, a block $B$ of $S$ is a subsequence $B=(s_i,s_{i+1},\dots,s_j)$. The size $b$ of a block $B$ is the sum of its elements. It is proved in [1] that for each positive integer $n$, there is a partition of $S$ into $n$ blocks $B_1, \dots , B_n$ with $|b_i - b_j| \le 1$ for every $i, j$. In this paper, we consider a generalization of the problem in higher dimensions.

The ideal of maximal flags of a poset
We study algebraic and homological properties of facet ideals of order complexes of posets which we call ideals of maximal flags of posets or simply flag ideals. We characterize the unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay flag ideals of graded posets. We also give structural results for the multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals of such posets. The structural results on multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals are used to characterize the class of flag ideals with linear resolutions.
