Non-commutative association schemes and their fusion association schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a sufficient condition for a non-commutative association scheme to have a fusion association scheme, and construct non-commutative association schemes from symmetric balanced generalized weighing matrices and generalized Hadamard matrices. We then apply the criterion to these non-commutative association schemes to obtain symmetric fusion association schemes.

Gray Codes for AT-Free Orders
Published in Ars Combinatoria (155) 2021, 273-284 • View Publication • BIB
AT-free graphs are characterized by vertex elimination orders. We show that these AT-free orders of a graph can be generated in constant amortized time.
Shellability of posets of labeled partitions and arrangements defined by root systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the posets of connected components of intersections of toric and elliptic arrangements defined by root systems are EL-shellable and we compute their homotopy type. Our method rests on Bibby's description of such posets by means of "labeled partitions": after giving an EL-labeling and counting homology chains for general posets of labeled partitions, we obtain the stated results by considering the appropriate subposets.

Minimal and maximal Numbrix puzzles
This paper explores special arrangements of clues in $m \times n$ Numbrix puzzles. The maximum number of clues which fails to define an $m \times n$ puzzle is demonstrated for all $m$ and $n$. In addition, a small upper bound on the minimum number of clues required to define an $m \times n$ puzzle is given for all $m$ and $n$ as well. For small $m \geq 3$ our upper bound appears to actually give the minimum number and hence we conjecture that our bound may be sharp for all $m \geq 3$.
Almost-equidistant sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $d$, a set of points in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is called almost-equidistant if for any three points from the set, some two are at unit distance. Let $f(d)$ denote the largest size of an almost-equidistant set in $d$-space. It is known that $f(2)=7$, $f(3)=10$, and that the extremal almost-equidistant sets are unique. We give independent, computer-assisted proofs of these statements. It is also known that $f(5) \ge 16$. We further show that $12\leq f(4)\leq 13$, $f(5)\leq 20$, $18\leq f(6)\leq 26$, $20\leq f(7)\leq 34$, and $f(9)\geq f(8)\geq 24$. Up to dimension $7$, our work is based on various computer searches, and in dimensions $6$ to $9$, we give constructions based on the known construction for $d=5$. For every dimension $d \ge 3$, we give an example of an almost-equidistant set of $2d+4$ points in the $d$-space and we prove the asymptotic upper bound $f(d) \le O(d^{3/2})$.
An efficient Algorithm to partition a Sequence of Integers into Subsets with equal Sums
To partition a sequence of n integers into subsets with prescribed sums is an NP-hard problem in general. In this paper we present an efficient solution for the homogeneous version of this problem; i.e. where the elements in each subset add up to the same sum.

Quasi-homogeneity of the moduli space of stable maps to homogeneous spaces
Let $G$ be a connected, simply connected, simple, complex, linear algebraic group. Let $P$ be an arbitrary parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $X=G/P$ be the $G$-homogeneous projective space attached to this situation. Let $d\in H_2(X)$ be a degree. Let $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ be the (coarse) moduli space of three pointed genus zero stable maps to $X$ of degree $d$. We prove under reasonable assumptions on $d$ that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $G$. The essential assumption on $d$ is that $d$ is a minimal degree, i.e. that $d$ is a degree which is minimal with the property that $q^d$ occurs with non-zero coefficient in the quantum product $σ_u\starσ_v$ of two Schubert cycles $σ_u$ and $σ_v$, where $\star$ denotes the product in the (small) quantum cohomology ring $QH^*(X)$ attached to $X$. We prove our main result on quasi-homogeneity by constructing an explicit morphism which has a dense open $G$-orbit in $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$. To carry out the construction of this morphism, we develop a combinatorial theory of generalized cascades of orthogonal roots which is interesting in its own right.

Eccentricities in the flip-graphs of convex polygons
Published in J. Graph Theory 92(2), 111-129 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
The flip-graph of a convex polygon $π$ is the graph whose vertices are the triangulations of $π$ and whose edges correspond to flips between them. The eccentricity of a triangulation $T$ of $π$ is the largest possible distance in this graph from $T$ to any triangulation of $π$. It is well known that, when all $n-3$ interior edges of $T$ are incident to the same vertex, the eccentricity of $T$ in the flip-graph of $π$ is exactly $n-3$, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices of $π$. Here, this statement is generalized to arbitrary triangulations. Denoting by $n-3-k$ the largest number of interior edges of $T$ incident to a vertex, it is shown that the eccentricity of $T$ in the flip-graph of $π$ is exactly $n-3+k$, provided $k\leq{n/2-2}$. Inversely, the eccentricity of a triangulation, when small enough, allows to recover the value of $k$. More precisely, if $k\leq{n/8-5/2}$, it is also shown that $T$ has eccentricity $n-3+k$ if and only if exactly $n-3-k$ of its interior edges are incident to a given vertex. When $k>n/2-2$, bounds on the eccentricity of $T$ are also given and discussed.

Approximating the Volume of Tropical Polytopes is Difficult
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation, 29(02):357--389, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the complexity of counting the number of integer points in tropical polytopes, and the complexity of calculating their volume. We study the tropical analogue of the outer parallel body and establish bounds for its volume. We deduce that there is no approximation algorithm of factor $α=2^{\text{poly}(m,n)}$ for the volume of a tropical polytope given by $n$ vertices in a space of dimension $m$, unless P$=$NP. Neither is there such an approximation algorithm for counting the number of integer points in tropical polytopes described by vertices. If follows that approximating these values for tropical polytopes is more difficult than for classical polytopes. Our proofs use a reduction from the problem of calculating the tropical rank. For tropical polytopes described by inequalities we prove that counting the number of integer points and calculating the volume are $\#$P-hard.

Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes with a free action by an abelian group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider simplicial complexes admitting a free action by an abelian group. Specifically, we establish a refinement of the classic result of Hochster describing the local cohomology modules of the associated Stanley--Reisner ring, demonstrating that the topological structure of the free action extends to the algebraic setting. If the complex in question is also Buchsbaum, this new description allows for a specialization of Schenzel's calculation of the Hilbert series of some of the ring's Artinian reductions. In further application, we generalize to the Buchsbaum case the results of Stanley and Adin that provide a lower bound on the $h$-vector of a Cohen-Macaulay complex admitting a free action by a cyclic group of prime order.
On the metric dimension of affine planes, biaffine planes and generalized quadrangles
In this paper the metric dimension of (the incidence graphs of) particular partial linear spaces is considered. We prove that the metric dimension of an affine plane of order $q\geq13$ is $3q-4$ and describe all resolving sets of that size if $q\geq 23$. The metric dimension of a biaffine plane (also called a flag-type elliptic semiplane) of order $q\geq 4$ is shown to fall between $2q-2$ and $3q-6$, while for Desarguesian biaffine planes the lower bound is improved to $8q/3-7$ under $q\geq 7$, and to $3q-9\sqrt{q}$ under certain stronger restrictions on $q$. We determine the metric dimension of generalized quadrangles of order $(s,1)$, $s$ arbitrary. We derive that the metric dimension of generalized quadrangles of order $(q,q)$, $q\geq2$, is at least $\max\{6q-27,4q-7\}$, while for the classical generalized quadrangles $W(q)$ and $Q(4,q)$ it is at most $8q$.

On the existence of specified cycles in bipartite tournaments
For two integers $n\geq 3$ and $2\leq p\leq n$, we denote $D(n,p)$ the digraph obtained from a directed $n$-cycle by changing the orientations of $p-1$ consecutive arcs. In this paper, we show that a family of $k$-regular $(k\geq 3)$ bipartite tournament $BT_{4k}$ contains $D(4k,p)$ for all $2\leq p\leq 4k$ unless $BT_{4k}$ is isomorphic to a digraph $D$ such that $(1,2,3,...,4k,1)$ is a Hamilton cycle and $(4m+i-1,i)\in A(D)$ and $(i,4m+i+1)\in A(D)$, where $1\leq m\leq k-1$.

The Distribution of Knots in the Petaluma Model
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 18 (2018) 3647-3667 • View Publication • BIB
The representation of knots by petal diagrams (Adams et al. 2012) naturally defines a sequence of distributions on the set of knots. In this article we establish some basic properties of this randomized knot model. We prove that in the random n-petal model the probability of obtaining every specific knot type decays to zero as n, the number of petals, grows. In addition we improve the bounds relating the crossing number and the petal number of a knot. This implies that the n-petal model represents at least exponentially many distinct knots. Past approaches to showing, in some random models, that individual knot types occur with vanishing probability, rely on the prevalence of localized connect summands as the complexity of the knot increases. However this phenomenon is not clear in other models, including petal diagrams, random grid diagrams, and uniform random polygons. Thus we provide a new approach to investigate this question.

$q$-Stirling numbers revisited
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 25 Issue 1 (2018), Paper #P1.37 • View Publication • BIB
We give combinatorial proofs of $q$-Stirling identities using restricted growth words. This includes a poset theoretic proof of Carlitz's identity, a new proof of the $q$-Frobenius identity of Garsia and Remmel and of Ehrenborg's Hankel $q$-Stirling determinantal identity. We also develop a two parameter generalization to unify identities of Mercier and include a symmetric function version.
On the directed Oberwolfach Problem with equal cycle lengths: the odd case
We show that the complete symmetric digraph $K_{2m}^\ast$ admits a resolvable decomposition into directed cycles of length $m$ for all odd $m$, $5 \le m \le 49$. Consequently, $K_{n}^\ast$ admits a resolvable decomposition into directed cycles of length $m$ for all $n \equiv 0 \pmod{2m}$ and odd $m$, $5 \le m \le 49$.

Models for Configuration Space in a Simplicial Complex
Published in Colloq. Math. 155 (2019), no. 1, 127-139 • View Publication • BIB
We produce combinatorial models for configuration space in a simplicial complex, and for configurations near a single point ("local configuration space.") The model for local configuration space is built out of the poset of poset structures on a finite set. The model for global configuration space relies on a combinatorial model for a simplicial complex with a deleted subcomplex. By way of application, we study the nodal curve $y^2 z = x^3 + x^2 z$, obtaining a presentation for its two-strand braid group, a conjectural presentation for its three-strand braid group, and presentations for its two- and three-strand local braid groups near the singular point.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View Publication • BIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

Computing maximum cliques in $B_2$-EPG graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
EPG graphs, introduced by Golumbic et al. in 2009, are edge-intersection graphs of paths on an orthogonal grid. The class $B_k$-EPG is the subclass of EPG graphs where the path on the grid associated to each vertex has at most $k$ bends. Epstein et al. showed in 2013 that computing a maximum clique in $B_1$-EPG graphs is polynomial. As remarked in [Heldt et al., 2014], when the number of bends is at least $4$, the class contains $2$-interval graphs for which computing a maximum clique is an NP-hard problem. The complexity status of the Maximum Clique problem remains open for $B_2$ and $B_3$-EPG graphs. In this paper, we show that we can compute a maximum clique in polynomial time in $B_2$-EPG graphs given a representation of the graph. Moreover, we show that a simple counting argument provides a ${2(k+1)}$-approximation for the coloring problem on $B_k$-EPG graphs without knowing the representation of the graph. It generalizes a result of [Epstein et al, 2013] on $B_1$-EPG graphs (where the representation was needed).

Induced subdivisions and bounded expansion
We prove that for every graph H and for every integer s, the class of graphs that do not contain K_s, K_{s,s}, or any subdivision of H as an induced subgraph has bounded expansion; this strengthens a result of Kuhn and Osthus. The argument also gives another characterization of graph classes with bounded expansion and of nowhere-dense graph classes.

On the arithmetic of graphs
The Zykov ring of signed finite simple graphs with topological join as addition and compatible multiplication is an integral domain but not a unique factorization domain. We know that because by taking graph complements, it becomes isomorphic to the strong Sabidussi ring with disjoint union as addition. We prove that the Euler characteristic is a ring homomorphism from the strong ring to the integers by demonstrating that the strong ring is homotopic to a Stanley-Reisner Cartesian ring. More generally, the Kuenneth formula holds on the strong ring so that the Poincare polynomial is compatible with the ring structure. The Zykov ring has the clique number as a ring homomorphism. Furthermore, the Cartesian ring has the property that the functor which attaches to a graph the spectrum of its connection Laplacian is multiplicative. The reason is that the connection Laplacians do tensor under multiplication, similarly to what the adjacency matrix does for the weak ring. The strong ring product of two graphs contains both the weak and direct product graphs as subgraphs. The Zykov, Sabidussi or Stanley-Reisner rings are so manifestations of a network arithmetic which has remarkable cohomological properties, dimension and spectral compatibility but where arithmetic questions like the complexity of detecting primes or factoring are not yet studied well. We illustrate the Zykov arithmetic with examples, especially from the subring generated by point graphs which contains spheres, stars or complete bipartite graphs. While things are formulated in the language of graph theory, all constructions generalize to the larger category of finite abstract simplicial complexes.
