Counting the Palstars
Published • View Publication • BIB
A palstar (after Knuth, Morris, and Pratt) is a concatenation of even-length palindromes. We show that, asymptotically, there are $Θ(α_k^n)$ palstars of length $2n$ over a $k$-letter alphabet, where $α_k$ is a constant such that $2k-1 < α_k < 2k-{1 \over 2}$. In particular, $α_2 \doteq 3.33513193$.

A note on some special exponential sums
In this note, we presented a new decomposition of elements of finite fields of even order and illustrated that it is an effective tool in evaluation of some specific exponential sums over finite fields, the explicit value of some exponential sums were obtained.

An upper bound of the value of t of the support t-designs of extremal binary doubly even self-dual codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let C be an extremal binary doubly even self-dual code of length n and s(C) denote the largest integer t such that the support design of C holds a t-design for some weight. In this paper, we prove s(C) \leq 7.

Let D be the support design of the minimum weight of an extremal binary doubly even self-dual [24m,12m,4m+4] code. In this note, we consider the case when D becomes a t-design with t \geq 6.

Excluded minors and the ribbon graphs of knots
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider minors of ribbon graphs (or, equivalently, cellularly embedded graphs). The theory of minors of ribbon graphs differs from that of graphs in that contracting loops is necessary and doing this can create additional vertices and components. Thus the ribbon graph minor relation is incompatible with the graph minor relation. We discuss excluded minor characterisations of minor closed families of ribbon graphs. Our main result is an excluded minor characterisation of the family of ribbon graphs that represent knot and link diagrams.

On Interval Non-Edge-Colorable Eulerian Multigraphs
An edge-coloring of a multigraph $G$ with colors $1,\ldots,t$ is called an interval $t$-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. In this note, we show that all Eulerian multigraphs with an odd number of edges have no interval coloring. We also give some methods for constructing of interval non-edge-colorable Eulerian multigraphs.

The poset of posets
Let X be a finite set. This paper describes some topological and combinatorial properties of the poset Ω_X of order relations on X. In particular, the homotopy type of all the intervals in Ω_X is precisely determined, and the Möbius function of Ω_X is computed.

A bijection between triangulations and $312$-avoiding permutations
We define a bijection between triangulations of a convex polygon and $312$-avoiding permutations through the process of "ear-clipping". This bijection is then used to obtain a bijection between polygon dissections and a certain class of $312$-avoiding permutations.
On the Number of Edges of Fan-Crossing Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph drawn in the plane with n vertices is k-fan-crossing free for k > 1 if there are no k+1 edges $g,e_1,...e_k$, such that $e_1,e_2,...e_k$ have a common endpoint and $g$ crosses all $e_i$. We prove a tight bound of 4n-8 on the maximum number of edges of a 2-fan-crossing free graph, and a tight 4n-9 bound for a straight-edge drawing. For k > 2, we prove an upper bound of 3(k-1)(n-2) edges. We also discuss generalizations to monotone graph properties.

Laplacian coefficients of unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves and girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $\mathcal{L}(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n (-1)^{k}c_{k}(G)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix. Motivated by Ilić and Ilić's conjecture [A. Ilić, M. Ilić, Laplacian coefficients of trees with given number of leaves or vertices of degree two, Linear Algebra and its Applications 431(2009)2195-2202.] on all extremal graphs which minimize all the Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}$ of all $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$, we investigate properties of the minimal elements in the partial set $(\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g, \preceq)$ of the Laplacian coefficients, where $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g$ denote the set of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$ and girth $g$. These results are used to disprove their conjecture. Moreover, the graphs with minimum Laplacian-like energy in $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g$ are also studied.

New constructions and bounds for Winkler's hat game
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hat problems have recently become a popular topic in combinatorics and discrete mathematics. These have been shown to be strongly related to coding theory, network coding, and auctions. We consider the following version of the hat game, introduced by Winkler and studied by Butler et al. A team is composed of several players; each player is assigned a hat of a given colour; they do not see their own colour, but can see some other hats, according to a directed graph. The team wins if they have a strategy such that, for any possible assignment of colours to their hats, at least one player guesses their own hat colour correctly. In this paper, we discover some new classes of graphs which allow a winning strategy, thus answering some of the open questions in Butler et al. We also derive upper bounds on the maximal number of possible hat colours that allow for a winning strategy for a given graph.

A finite chiral 4-polytope in $\mathbb{R}^4$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give an example of a chiral 4-polytope in projective 3-space. This example naturally yields a finite chiral 4-polytope in Euclidean 4-space, giving a counterexample to Theorem 11.2 of [2].

An Analogue of the Hilton-Milner Theorem for weak compositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb N_0$ be the set of non-negative integers, and let $P(n,l)$ denote the set of all weak compositions of $n$ with $l$ parts, i.e., $P(n,l)=\{ (x_1,x_2,\dots, x_l)\in\mathbb N_0^l\ :\ x_1+x_2+\cdots+x_l=n\}$. For any element $\mathbf u=(u_1,u_2,\dots, u_l)\in P(n,l)$, denote its $i$th-coordinate by $\mathbf u(i)$, i.e., $\mathbf u(i)=u_i$. A family $\mathcal A\subseteq P(n,l)$ is said to be $t$-intersecting if $\vert \{ i \ :\ \mathbf u(i)=\mathbf v(i)\} \vert\geq t$ for all $\mathbf u,\mathbf v\in \mathcal A$. A family $\mathcal A\subseteq P(n,l)$ is said to be trivially $t$-intersecting if there is a $t$-set $T$ of $\{1,2,\dots,l\}$ and elements $y_s\in \mathbb N_0$ ($s\in T$) such that $\mathcal{A}= \{\mathbf u\in P(n,l)\ :\ \mathbf u(j)=y_j\ {\rm for all}\ j\in T\}$. We prove that given any positive integers $l,t$ with $l\geq 2t+3$, there exists a constant $n_0(l,t)$ depending only on $l$ and $t$, such that for all $n\geq n_0(l,t)$, if $\mathcal{A} \subseteq P(n,l)$ is non-trivially $t$-intersecting then \begin{equation} \vert \mathcal{A} \vert\leq {n+l-t-1 \choose l-t-1}-{n-1 \choose l-t-1}+t.\notag \end{equation} Moreover, equality holds if and only if there is a $t$-set $T$ of $\{1,2,\dots,l\}$ such that \begin{equation} \mathcal A=\bigcup_{s\in \{1,2,\dots, l\}\setminus T} \mathcal A_s\cup \left\{ \mathbf q_i\ :\ i\in T \right\},\notag \end{equation} where \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_s & =\{\mathbf u\in P(n,l)\ :\ \mathbf u(j)=0\ {\rm for all}\ j\in T\ {\rm and}\ \mathbf u(s)=0\}\notag \end{align} and $\mathbf q_i\in P(n,l)$ with $\mathbf q_i(j)=0$ for all $j\in \{1,2,\dots, l\}\setminus \{i\}$ and $\mathbf q_i(i)=n$.

On $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families for weak compositions
Let $l=\min(l_1,l_2,\dots, l_r)$. Families $\mathcal A_j\subseteq P(n_j,l_j)$ ($j=1,2,\dots, r$) are said to be $r$-cross $t$-intersecting if $\vert \{ i\in [l] \ :\ \mathbf u_1(i)=\mathbf u_2(i)=\cdots=\mathbf u_r(i)\} \vert\geq t$ for all $\mathbf u_j\in \mathcal A_j$. Suppose that $l\geq t+2$. We prove that there exists a constant $n_0=n_0(l_1,l_2,\dots,l_r,t)$ depending only on $l_j$'s and $t$, such that for all $n_j\geq n_0$, if the families $\mathcal A_j\subseteq P(n_j,l_j)$ ($j=1,2,\dots, r$) are $r$-cross $t$-intersecting, then \begin{equation} \prod_{j=1}^r \vert \mathcal{A}_j \vert\leq \prod_{j=1}^r {n_j+l_j-t-1 \choose l_j-t-1}.\notag \end{equation} Moreover, equality holds if and only if there is a $t$-set $T$ of $\{1,2,\dots,l\}$ such that $\mathcal{A}_j=\{\mathbf u\in P(n_j,l_j)\ :\ \mathbf u(i)=0\ {\rm for\ all}\ i\in T\}$ for $j=1,2,\dots, r$.

A generalization of the extremal function of the Davenport-Schinzel sequences
Let $[n]=\{1, \ldots, n\}$. A sequence $u=a_1a_2\dots a_l$ over $[n]$ is called $k$-sparse if $a_i = a_j$, $i > j$ implies $i-j\geq k$. In other words, every consecutive subsequence of $u$ of length at most $k$ does not have letters in common. Let $u,v$ be two sequences. We say that $u$ is $v$-free, if $u$ does not contain a subsequence isomorphic to $v$. Suppose there are only $k$ letters appearing in $v$. The extremal function Ex$(v,n)$ is defined as the maximum length of all the $v$-free and $k$-sparse sequences. In this paper, we study a generalization of the extremal function Ex$(v,n)$.

Linear Extensions of N-free Orders
Published in Order 32(2): 147-155 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
We consider the number of linear extensions of an N-free order P. We give upper and lower bounds on this number in terms of parameters of the corresponding arc diagram. We propose a dynamic programming algorithm to calculate the number. The algorithm is polynomial if a new parameter called activity is bounded by a constant. The activity can be bounded in terms of parameters of the arc diagram.

Graph measures and network robustness
Network robustness research aims at finding a measure to quantify network robustness. Once such a measure has been established, we will be able to compare networks, to improve existing networks and to design new networks that are able to continue to perform well when it is subject to failures or attacks. In this paper we survey a large amount of robustness measures on simple, undirected and unweighted graphs, in order to offer a tool for network administrators to evaluate and improve the robustness of their network. The measures discussed in this paper are based on the concepts of connectivity (including reliability polynomials), distance, betweenness and clustering. Some other measures are notions from spectral graph theory, more precisely, they are functions of the Laplacian eigenvalues. In addition to surveying these graph measures, the paper also contains a discussion of their functionality as a measure for topological network robustness.

Linear Toric Fibrations
Published • View Publication • BIB
These notes are based on three lectures given at the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school. The purpose of this series of lectures is to introduce the notion of a toric fibration and to give its geometrical and combinatorial characterizations. Polarized toric varieties which are birationally equivalent to projective toric bundles are associated to a class of polytopes called Cayley polytopes. Their geometry and combinatorics have a fruitful interplay leading to fundamental insight in both directions. These notes will illustrate geometrical phenomena, in algebraic geometry and neighboring fields, which are characterized by a Cayley structure. Examples are projective duality of toric varieties and polyhedral adjunction theory.

How many $n$-vertex triangulations does the $3$-sphere have?
It is known that the $3$-sphere has at most $2^{O(n^2 \log n)}$ combinatorially distinct triangulations with $n$ vertices. Here we construct at least $2^{Ω(n^2)}$ such triangulations.
