Functorial relationships between quantum cohomology of complete and partial flag varieties, (II)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show a canonical injective morphism from the quantum cohomology ring QH(G/P) to the associated graded algebra of QH(G/B), which is with respect to a nice filtration on QH(G/B) introduced by Leung and the author. This tells us the vanishing of a lot of genus zero, three-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants of flag varieties G/P.

The probabilistic approach to limited packings in graphs
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 184 (2015), pp.146-153 • View Publication • BIB
We consider (closed neighbourhood) packings and their generalization in graphs. A vertex set X in a graph G is a k-limited packing if for any vertex $v\in V(G)$, $\left|N[v] \cap X\right| \le k$, where N[v] is the closed neighbourhood of v. The k-limited packing number $L_k(G)$ of a graph G is the largest size of a k-limited packing in G. Limited packing problems can be considered as secure facility location problems in networks. In this paper, we develop a new probabilistic approach to limited packings in graphs, resulting in lower bounds for the k-limited packing number and a randomized algorithm to find k-limited packings satisfying the bounds. In particular, we prove that for any graph G of order n with maximum vertex degree $Δ$, $$L_k(G) \ge {kn \over (k+1)\sqrt[k]{\pmatrix{Δ\cr k} (Δ+1)}}.$$ The problem of finding a maximum size k-limited packing is known to be NP-complete even in split or bipartite graphs.

Supercharacters of unipotent groups defined by involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct supercharacter theories of finite unipotent groups in the orthogonal, symplectic and unitary types. Our method utilizes group actions in a manner analogous to that of Diaconis and Isaacs in their construction of supercharacters of algebra groups. The resulting supercharacter theories agree with those of André and Neto in the case of the unipotent orthogonal and symplectic matrices and generalize to a large collection of subgroups. In the unitary group case, we describe the supercharacters and superclasses in terms of labeled set partitions and calculate the supercharacter table.
Dimensionality reduction and spectral properties of multilayer networks
Published in Phys. Rev. E 89, 052815 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
Network representations are useful for describing the structure of a large variety of complex systems. Although most studies of real-world networks suppose that nodes are connected by only a single type of edge, most natural and engineered systems include multiple subsystems and layers of connectivity. This new paradigm has attracted a great deal of attention and one fundamental challenge is to characterize multilayer networks both structurally and dynamically. One way to address this question is to study the spectral properties of such networks. Here, we apply the framework of graph quotients, which occurs naturally in this context, and the associated eigenvalue interlacing results, to the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of undirected multilayer networks. Specifically, we describe relationships between the eigenvalue spectra of multilayer networks and their two most natural quotients, the network of layers and the aggregate network, and show the dynamical implications of working with either of the two simplified representations. Our work thus contributes in particular to the study of dynamical processes whose critical properties are determined by the spectral properties of the underlying network.
The Chromatic Polynomials of Signed Petersen Graphs
Published in Involve 8 (2015) 825-831 • View Publication • BIB
Zaslavsky proved in 2012 that, up to switching isomorphism, there are six different signed Petersen graphs and that they could be told apart by their chromatic polynomials, by showing that the latter give distinct results when evaluated at 3. He conjectured that the six different signed Petersen graphs also have distinct zero-free chromatic polynomials, and that both types of chromatic polynomials have distinct evaluations at \emph{any} positive integer. We developed and executed a computer program (running in {\tt SAGE}) that efficiently determines the number of proper $k$-colorings for a given signed graph; our computations for the signed Petersen graphs confirm Zaslavsky's conjecture. We also computed the chromatic polynomials of all signed complete graphs with up to five vertices.

The $(\leq 6)$-half-reconstructibility of digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,A)$ be a digraph. With every subset $X$ of $V$, we associate the subdigraph $G[X]=(X,A\cap (X\times X))$ of $G$ induced by $X$. Given a positive integer $k$, a digraph $G$ is $(\leq k)$-half-reconstructible if it is determined up to duality by its subdigraphs of cardinality $\leq k$. In 2003, J. Dammak characterized the $(\leq k)$-half-reconstructible finite digraphs, for $k\in \{7,8,9,10,11\}$. N. El Amri, extended J. Dammak's characterization to infinite digraphs. In this paper, we characterize the $(\leq 6)$-half-reconstructible infinite digraphs.
On Lagrangians of Hypergraphs Containing Dense Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motzkin and Straus established a remarkable connection between the maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph in 1965. This connection and its extensions were successfully employed in optimization to provide heuristics for the maximum clique number in graphs. It is useful in practice if similar results hold for hypergraphs. In this paper, we provide upper bounds on the Lagrangian of a hypergraph containing dense subgraphs when the number of edges of the hypergraph is in certain ranges. These results support a pair of conjectures introduced by Y. Peng and C. Zhao (2012) and extend a result of J. Talbot (2002). \keywords{Cliques of hypergraphs \and Colex ordering \and Lagrangians of hypergraphs \and Polynomial optimization}
Deformations of shuffles and quasi-shuffles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate deformations of the shuffl e Hopf algebra structure Sh(A) which can be de fined on the tensor algebra over a commutative algebra A. Such deformations, leading for example to the quasi-shuffl e algebra QSh(A), can be interpreted as natural transformations of the functor Sh, regarded as a functor from commutative nonunital algebras to coalgebras. We prove that the monoid of natural endomophisms of the functor Sh is isomorphic to the monoid of formal power series in one variable without constant term under composition, so that in particular, its natural automorphisms are in bijection with formal diffeomorphisms of the line. These transformations can be interpreted as elements of the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions WQSym, and in turn de fine deformations of its structure. This leads to a new embedding of free quasi-symmetric functions into WQSym, whose relevance is illustrated by a simple and transparent proof of Goldberg's formula for the coe cients of the Hausdorff series.

An incidence conjecture of Bourgain over fields of positive characteristic

In this note we generalize a recent theorem of Guth and Katz on incidences between points and lines in $3$-space from characteristic $0$ to characteristic $p$, and we explain how some of the special features of algebraic geometry in characteristic $p$ manifest themselves in problems of incidence geometry.

Spanning Simplicial Ccomplexes of Uni-Cyclic Graphs
Published in Algebra Colloquium Vol. 22, No. 04, pp. 707-710 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spanning simplicial complexes $Δ_s(G)$ associated to a simple finite connected graph G. We give the characterization of all spanning trees of the uni-cyclic graph $U_{n,m}$. In particular, we give the formula for computing the Hilbert series and h-vector of the Stanley-Riesner ring k[Δ_s(U_{n,m})]. Finally, we prove that the spanning simplicial complex $Δ_s(U_{n,m})$ is shifted hence $Δ_s(U_{n,m})$ is shellable.

The Postage Stamp Problem - Formulae and proof for the case of 3 denominations
A_k = {1, a_2, ..., a_k} is an h-basis for n if every positive integer not exceeding n can be expressed as the sum of no more than h values a_i; an extremal h-basis A_k is one for which n is as large as possible. Computing such extremal bases has become known as the Postage Stamp Problem. In 1968 Gerd Hofmeister published formulae for solutions to the Postage Stamp Problem with three denominations (h = 3). This paper presents an alternative approach developed independently by the author 25 years later.

On the largest graph-Lagrangians of hypergraphs
Frankl and Füredi (1989) conjectured that the $r$-graph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest graph-Lagrangian of all $r$-graphs with $m$ edges. In this paper, we establish some bounds for graph-Lagrangians of some special $r$-graphs that support this conjecture.

The power of 2 choices over preferential attachment
We introduce a new type of preferential attachment tree that includes choices in its evolution, like with Achlioptas processes. At each step in the growth of the graph, a new vertex is introduced. Two possible neighbor vertices are selected independently and with probability proportional to degree. Between the two, the vertex with smaller degree is chosen, and a new edge is created. We determine with high probability the largest degree of this graph up to some additive error term.
An edge variant of the Erdős-Pósa property
Published • View Publication • BIB
For every $r\in \mathbb{N}$, we denote by $θ_{r}$ the multigraph with two vertices and $r$ parallel edges. Given a graph $G$, we say that a subgraph $H$ of $G$ is a model of $θ_{r}$ in $G$ if $H$ contains $θ_{r}$ as a contraction. We prove that the following edge variant of the Erd{\H o}s-P{ó}sa property holds for every $r\geq 2$: if $G$ is a graph and $k$ is a positive integer, then either $G$ contains a packing of $k$ mutually edge-disjoint models of $θ_{r}$, or it contains a set $S$ of $f_r(k)$ edges such that $G\setminus S$ has no $θ_{r}$-model, for both $f_r(k) = O(k^2r^3 \mathrm{polylog}~kr)$ and $f_r(k) = O(k^4r^2 \mathrm{polylog}~kr).$

Planar graph is on fire
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, 593(2015), 160-164 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be any connected graph on $n$ vertices, $n \ge 2.$ Let $k$ be any positive integer. Suppose that a fire breaks out on some vertex of $G.$ Then in each turn $k$ firefighters can protect vertices of $G$ --- each can protect one vertex not yet on fire; Next a fire spreads to all unprotected neighbours. The \emph{$k$-surviving} rate of G, denoted by $ρ_k(G),$ is the expected fraction of vertices that can be saved from the fire by $k$ firefighters, provided that the starting vertex is chosen uniformly at random. In this paper, it is shown that for any planar graph $G$ we have $ρ_3(G) \ge \frac{2}{21}.$ Moreover, 3 firefighters are needed for the first step only; after that it is enough to have 2 firefighters per each round. This result significantly improves known solutions to a problem of Cai and Wang (there was no positive bound known for surviving rate of general planar graph with only 3 firefighters). The proof is done using the separator theorem for planar graphs.

A Quantitative Steinitz Theorem for Plane Triangulations
We give a new proof of Steinitz's classical theorem in the case of plane triangulations, which allows us to obtain a new general bound on the grid size of the simplicial polytope realizing a given triangulation, subexponential in a number of special cases. Formally, we prove that every plane triangulation $G$ with $n$ vertices can be embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in such a way that it is the vertical projection of a convex polyhedral surface. We show that the vertices of this surface may be placed in a $4n^3 \times 8n^5 \times ζ(n)$ integer grid, where $ζ(n) \leq (500 n^8)^{τ(G)}$ and $τ(G)$ denotes the shedding diameter of $G$, a quantity defined in the paper.

Graphs with no 7-wheel subdivision
Published • View Publication • BIB
The subgraph homeomorphism problem, SHP($H$), has been shown to be polynomial-time solvable for any fixed pattern graph $H$, but practical algorithms have been developed only for a few specific pattern graphs. Among these are the wheels with four, five, and six spokes. This paper examines the subgraph homeomorphism problem where the pattern graph is a wheel with seven spokes, and gives a result that describes graphs with no $W_{7}$-subdivision, showing how they can be built up, using certain operations, from smaller `pieces' that meet certain conditions. We also discuss algorithmic aspects of the problem.

Search strategies for developing characterizations of graphs without small wheel subdivisions
Practical algorithms for solving the Subgraph Homeomorphism Problem are known for only a few small pattern graphs: among these are the wheel graphs with four, five, six, and seven spokes. The length and difficulty of the proofs leading to these algorithms increase greatly as the size of the pattern graph increases. Proving a result for the wheel with six spokes requires extensive case analysis on many small graphs, and even more such analysis is needed for the wheel with seven spokes. This paper describes algorithms and programs used to automate the generation and testing of the graphs that arise as cases in these proofs. The main algorithm given may be useful in a more general context, for developing other characterizations of SHP-related properties.
