Correlation of paths between distinct vertices in a randomly oriented graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that in a random tournament the events $\{s\rightarrow a\}$ and $\{t\rightarrow b\}$ are positively correlated, for distinct vertices $a,s,b,t \in K_n.$ It is also proven that the correlation between the events $\{s\rightarrow a\}$ and $\{t\rightarrow b\}$ in the random graphs $G(n,p)$ and $G(n,m)$ with random orientation is positive for every fixed $p>0$ and sufficiently large $n$ (with $m=\left\lfloor p \binom{n}{2}\right\rfloor$). We conjecture it to be positive for all $p$ and all $n$. An exact recursion for $¶(\{s\rightarrow a\} \cap \{t\rightarrow b\})$ in $\gnp$ is given.
Structure and enumeration of (3+1)-free posets
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 18 (2014) 645-674 • View Publication • BIB
A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets play a central role in the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Lewis and Zhang have enumerated (3+1)-free posets in the graded case by decomposing them into bipartite graphs, but until now the general enumeration problem has remained open. We give a finer decomposition into bipartite graphs which applies to all (3+1)-free posets and obtain generating functions which count (3+1)-free posets with labelled or unlabelled vertices. Using this decomposition, we obtain a decomposition of the automorphism group and asymptotics for the number of (3+1)-free posets.
A characterization of triangulations of closed surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove that a finite triangulation of a connected closed surface is completely determined by its intersection matrix. The \emph{intersection matrix} of a finite triangulation, $K$, is defined as $M_{K}=(dim(s_{i}\cap s_{j}))_{0\leq i,0\leq j}^{n-1}$, where $K_{2}=\{s_{0}, \ldots s_{n-1}\}$ is a labelling of the triangles of $K$.

Projective Equivalences of k-neighbourly Polytopes
We prove the following theorem, which is related to McMullen's problem on projective transformations of polytopes; let $2\leq k\leq \lfloor{\frac{d}{2}}\rfloor$ and $ν{(d, k)}$ be the largest number such that any set of $ν{(d,k)}$ points lying in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be mapped by a permissible projective transformation onto the vertices of a k-neighborly polytope, then $d + \left\lceil{\frac{d}{k}}\right\rceil +1 \leq ν{(d, k)} < 2d-k +1$.

Feedback arc set problem and NP-hardness of minimum recurrent configuration problem of Chip-firing game on directed graphs
Published in Ann. Comb. 19 (2015), no. 2, 373-396 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present further studies of recurrent configurations of Chip-firing games on Eulerian directed graphs (simple digraphs), a class on the way from undirected graphs to general directed graphs. A computational problem that arises naturally from this model is to find the minimum number of chips of a recurrent configuration, which we call the minimum recurrent configuration (MINREC) problem. We point out a close relationship between MINREC and the minimum feedback arc set (MINFAS) problem on Eulerian directed graphs, and prove that both problems are NP-hard.

On irreducible maps and slices
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 23 (2014) 914-972 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of enumerating d-irreducible maps, i.e. planar maps whose all cycles have length at least d, and such that any cycle of length d is the boundary of a face of degree d. We develop two approaches in parallel: the natural approach via substitution where these maps are obtained from general maps by a replacement of all d-cycles by elementary faces, and a bijective approach via slice decomposition which consists in cutting the maps along shortest paths. Both lead to explicit expressions for the generating functions of d-irreducible maps with controlled face degrees, summarized in some elegant "pointing formula". We provide an equivalent description of d-irreducible slices in terms of so-called d-oriented trees. We finally show that irreducible maps give rise to a hierarchy of discrete integrable equations which include equations encountered previously in the context of naturally embedded trees.
Permutation decoding of Z2Z4-linear codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
An alternative permutation decoding method is described which can be used for any binary systematic encoding scheme, regardless whether the code is linear or not. Thus, the method can be applied to some important codes such as Z2Z4-linear codes, which are binary and, in general, nonlinear codes in the usual sense. For this, it is proved that these codes allow a systematic encoding scheme. As a particular example, this permutation decoding method is applied to some Hadamard Z2Z4-linear codes.

Algebraic and Affine Pattern Avoidance
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B69c (2013), 40 pp • Search Publication
We investigate various connections between the 0-Hecke monoid, Catalan monoid, and pattern avoidance in permutations, providing new tools for approaching pattern avoidance in an algebraic framework. In particular, we characterize containment of a class of `long' patterns as equivalent to the existence of a corresponding factorization. We then generalize some of our constructions to the affine setting.

Factorization of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of factoring permutations as a product of special types of transpositions, namely, those transpositions involving two positions with bounded distances. In particular, we investigate the minimum number, $δ$, such that every permutation can be factored into no more than $δ$ special transpositions. This study is related to sorting algorithms, Cayley graphs, and genomics.

A note on the Weiss conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite group acting vertex-transitively on a graph. We show that bounding the order of a vertex stabilizer is equivalent to bounding the second singular value of a particular bipartite graph. This yields an alternative formulation of the Weiss Conjecture.
The Dyck pattern poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic behavior of the sequence counting Dyck paths avoiding a generic pattern and we pose a series of open problems regarding the structure of the Dyck pattern poset.

We prove that the number of integers in the interval [0,x] that are non-trivial Ramsey numbers r(k,n) (3 <= k <= n) has order of magnitude (x ln x)**(1/2).

How to find G-admissible abelian coverings of a graph?
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications 438 (2013), no.8, 3303-3320 • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite connected simple graph $Γ$, and a subgroup $G$ of its automorphism group, a general method for finding all finite abelian regular coverings of $Γ$ that admit a lift of each element of $G$ is developed. As an application, all connected arc-transitive abelian regular coverings of the Petersen graph are classified up to isomorphism.

Asymptotic properties of some minor-closed classes of graphs
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 23 (5) pp. 749-795 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
Let A be a minor-closed class of labelled graphs, and let G_n be a random graph sampled uniformly from the set of n-vertex graphs of A. When n is large, what is the probability that G_n is connected? How many components does it have? How large is its biggest component? Thanks to the work of McDiarmid and his collaborators, these questions are now solved when all excluded minors are 2-connected. Using exact enumeration, we study a collection of classes A excluding non-2-connected minors, and show that their asymptotic behaviour may be rather different from the 2-connected case. This behaviour largely depends on the nature of dominant singularity of the generating function C(z) that counts connected graphs of A. We classify our examples accordingly, thus taking a first step towards a classification of minor-closed classes of graphs. Furthermore, we investigate a parameter that has not received any attention in this context yet: the size of the root component. It follows non-gaussian limit laws (beta and gamma), and clearly deserves a systematic investigation.

Intervals and factors in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study those generic intervals in the Bruhat order of the symmetric group that are isomorphic to the principal order ideal of a permutation w, and consider when the minimum and maximum elements of those intervals are related by a certain property of their reduced words. We show that the property does not hold when w is a decomposable permutation, and that the property always holds when w is the longest permutation.

Arboricity and spanning-tree packing in random graphs with an application to load balancing
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the arboricity A and the maximum number T of edge-disjoint spanning trees of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p). For all p(n) in [0,1], we show that, with high probability, T is precisely the minimum between delta and floor(m/(n-1)), where delta is the smallest degree of the graph and m denotes the number of edges. Moreover, we explicitly determine a sharp threshold value for p such that: above this threshold, T equals floor(m/(n-1)) and A equals ceiling(m/(n-1)); and below this threshold, T equals delta, and we give a two-value concentration result for the arboricity A in that range. Finally, we include a stronger version of these results in the context of the random graph process where the edges are sequentially added one by one. A direct application of our result gives a sharp threshold for the maximum load being at most k in the two-choice load balancing problem, where k goes to infinity.

A Gaussian distribution for refined DT invariants and 3D partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the refined Donaldson-Thomas invariants of C3, suitably normalized, have a Gaussian distribution as limit law. Combinatorially these numbers are given by weighted counts of 3D partitions. Our technique is to use the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to analyze the bivariate asymptotics of a q-deformation of MacMahon's function. The proof is based on that of E.M. Wright who explored the single variable case.
Finite Decomposition Semigroups
In this paper, we explain the importance of finite decomposition semigroups and present two theorems related to their structure.
Universal Cycles of Complementary Classes
Universal Cycles, or U-cycles, as originally defined by de Bruijn, are an efficient method to exhibit a large class of combinatorial objects in a compressed fashion, and with no repeats. de Bruijn's theorem states that U-cycles for $n$ letter words on a $k$ letter alphabet exist for all $k$ and $n$. Much has already been proved about Universal Cycles for a variety of other objects. This work is intended to augment the current research in the area by exhibiting U-cycles for {\it complementary classes}. Results will be presented that exhibit the existence of U-cycles for class-alternating words such as alternating vowel-consonant (VCVC) words; words with at least one repeated letter (non-injective functions); words with at least one letter of the alphabet missing (functions that are not onto); words that represent illegal tournament rankings; and words that do not constitute "strong" legal computer passwords. As with previous papers pertaining to U-cycles, connectedness proves to be a nontrivial step.
