A subtle new invariant for framed knots and links
We produce a facial state sum on plane diagrams of a knot or a link which admits an invariant specialization under Polyak's recent set of generating of 4 Reidemeister moves. Thus an isotopy invariant of framed links is obtained. Each state is a complete coloring of the faces of the diagram into white and black faces so that no two black faces share an edge. Each state induces a monomial in a ring of 16 variables. The sum of the states, properly specialized defines the new invariant. In despite of its simplicity it complements Jones invariant in distinguishing mirror pairs of links. In particular it proves that $9_{42}$ is distinct from its mirror image. For this pair of knots both the Jones Polynomial and Kauffman 2-variable polynomial fail.

A subset $A$ of a Banach space is called Banach-Saks when every sequence in $A$ has a Ces{à}ro convergent subsequence. Our interest here focusses on the following problem: is the convex hull of a Banach-Saks set again Banach-Saks? By means of a combinatorial argument, we show that in general the answer is negative. However, sufficient conditions are given in order to obtain a positive result.

This paper extends the scenario of the Four Color Theorem in the following way. Let H(d,k) be the set of all k-uniform hypergraphs that can be (linearly) embedded into R^d. We investigate lower and upper bounds on the maximum (weak and strong) chromatic number of hypergraphs in H(d,k). For example, we can prove that for d>2 there are hypergraphs in H(2d-3,d) on n vertices whose weak chromatic number is Omega(log n/log log n), whereas the weak chromatic number for n-vertex hypergraphs in H(d,d) is bounded by O(n^((d-2)/(d-1))) for d>2.

We use the concept of intrinsic metrics to give a new definition for an isoperimetric constant of a graph. We use this novel isoperimetric constant to prove a Cheeger-type estimate for the bottom of the spectrum which is nontrivial even if the vertex degrees are unbounded.

Sparseness of 4-cycle systems

An avoidance problem of configurations in 4-cycle systems is investigated by generalizing the notion of sparseness, which is originally from Erdős' r-sparse conjecture on Steiner triple systems. A 4-cycle system of order v, 4CS(v), is said to be r-sparse if for every integer j satisfying 1 < j < r+1 it contains no configurations consisting of j 4-cycles whose union contains precisely j+3 vertices. If an r-sparse 4CS(v) is also free from copies of a configuration on two 4-cycles sharing a diagonal, called the double-diamond, we say it is strictly r-sparse. In this paper, we show that for every admissible order v there exists a strictly 4-sparse 4CS(v). We also prove that for any positive integer r > 1 and sufficiently large integer v there exists a constant number c such that there exists a strictly r-sparse 4-cycle packing of order v with cv^2 4-cycles.

Let $D$ be a strong digraph on $n\geq 4$ vertices. In [3, Discrete Applied Math., 95 (1999) 77-87)], J. Bang-Jensen, Y. Guo and A. Yeo proved the following theorem: if (*) $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2n-1$ and $min \{d^+(x)+ d^-(y),d^-(x)+ d^+(y)\}\geq n-1$ for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$ with a common in-neighbour or a common out-neighbour, then $D$ is hamiltonian. In this note we show that: if $D$ is not directed cycle and satisfies the condition (*), then $D$ contains a cycle of length $n-1$ or $n-2$.

Let $G$ be a bridgeless cubic graph. Consider a list of $k$ 1-factors of $G$. Let $E_i$ be the set of edges contained in precisely $i$ members of the $k$ 1-factors. Let $μ_k(G)$ be the smallest $|E_0|$ over all lists of $k$ 1-factors of $G$.
Any list of three 1-factors induces a core of a cubic graph. We use results on the structure of cores to prove sufficient conditions for Berge-covers and for the existence of three 1-factors with empty intersection. Furthermore, if $μ_3(G) \not = 0$, then $2 μ_3(G)$ is an upper bound for the girth of $G$. We also prove some new upper bounds for the length of shortest cycle covers of bridgeless cubic graphs.
Cubic graphs with $μ_4(G) = 0$ have a 4-cycle cover of length $\frac{4}{3} |E(G)|$ and a 5-cycle double cover. These graphs also satisfy two conjectures of Zhang. We also give a negative answer to a problem of Zhang.

We study the structure of unit weighing matrices of order n and weights 2, 3 and 4. We show that the number of inequivalent unit weighing matrices UW(n,4) depends on the number of decompositions of n into sums of non-negative multiples of some specific positive integers. We also show two interesting sporadic cases in order to show the complexities involved for weights larger than 4.

Snake graphs appear naturally in the theory of cluster algebras. For cluster algebras from surfaces, each cluster variable is given by a formula which is parametrized by the perfect matchings of a snake graph. In this paper, we identify each cluster variable with its snake graph, and interpret relations among the cluster variables in terms of these graphs. In particular, we give a new proof of skein relations of two cluster variables.
Counting inequivalent monotone Boolean functions

Monotone Boolean functions (MBFs) are Boolean functions $f: {0,1}^n \rightarrow {0,1}$ satisfying the monotonicity condition $x \leq y \Rightarrow f(x) \leq f(y)$ for any $x,y \in {0,1}^n$. The number of MBFs in n variables is known as the $n$th Dedekind number. It is a longstanding computational challenge to determine these numbers exactly - these values are only known for $n$ at most 8. Two monotone Boolean functions are inequivalent if one can be obtained from the other by renaming the variables. The number of inequivalent MBFs in $n$ variables was known only for up to $n = 6$. In this paper we propose a strategy to count inequivalent MBF's by breaking the calculation into parts based on the profiles of these functions. As a result we are able to compute the number of inequivalent MBFs in 7 variables. The number obtained is 490013148.

A signed graph is a pair $(G,Σ)$, where $G=(V,E)$ is a graph (in which parallel edges are permitted, but loops are not) with $V=\{1,...,n\}$ and $Σ\subseteq E$. The edges in $Σ$ are called odd and the other edges even. By $S(G,Σ)$ we denote the set of all symmetric $n\times n$ matrices $A=[a_{i,j}]$ with $a_{i,j}<0$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by only even edges, $a_{i,j}>0$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by only odd edges, $a_{i,j}\in \mathbb{R}$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by both even and odd edges, $a_{i,j}=0$ if $i\not=j$ and $i$ and $j$ are non-adjacent, and $a_{i,i} \in \mathbb{R}$ for all vertices $i$. The parameter $ν(G,Σ)$ of a signed graph $(G,Σ)$ is the largest nullity of any positive semidefinite matrix $A\in S(G,Σ)$ that has the Strong Arnold Property. By $K_3^=$ we denote the signed graph obtained from $(K_3,\emptyset)$ by adding to each even edge an odd edge in parallel. In this paper, we prove that a signed graph $(G,Σ)$ has $ν(G,Σ)\leq 2$ if and only if $(G,Σ)$ has no minor isomorphic to $(K_4,E(K_4))$ or $K_3^=$.
On the sum of the Voronoi polytope of a lattice with a zonotope
A parallelotope $P$ is a polytope that admits a facet-to-facet tiling of space by translation copies of $P$ along a lattice. The Voronoi cell $P_V(L)$ of a lattice $L$ is an example of a parallelotope. A parallelotope can be uniquely decomposed as the Minkowski sum of a zone closed parallelotope $P$ and a zonotope $Z(U)$, where $U$ is the set of vectors used to generate the zonotope. In this paper we consider the related question: When is the Minkowski sum of a general parallelotope and a zonotope $P+Z(U)$ a parallelotope? We give two necessary conditions and show that the vectors $U$ have to be free. Given a set $U$ of free vectors, we give several methods for checking if $P + Z(U)$ is a parallelotope. Using this we classify such zonotopes for some highly symmetric lattices.
In the case of the root lattice $\mathsf{E}_6$, it is possible to give a more geometric description of the admissible sets of vectors $U$. We found that the set of admissible vectors, called free vectors, is described by the well-known configuration of $27$ lines in a cubic. Based on a detailed study of the geometry of $P_V(\mathsf{e}_6)$, we give a simple characterization of the configurations of vectors $U$ such that $P_V(\mathsf{E}_6) + Z(U)$ is a parallelotope. The enumeration yields $10$ maximal families of vectors, which are presented by their description as regular matroids.

In this paper, we introduce a method of constructing Universal Cycles on sets by taking "sums" and "products" of smaller cycles. We demonstrate this new approach by proving that if there exist Universal Cycles on the 4-subsets of [18] and the 4-subsets of [26], then for any integer n which is greater than or equal 18 and equivalent to 2 mod 8, there exists a Universal Cycle on the 4-subsets of [n].

We consider sparse random intersection graphs with the property that the clustering coefficient does not vanish as the number of nodes tends to infinity. We find explicit asymptotic expressions for the correlation coefficient of degrees of adjacent nodes (called the assortativity coefficient), the expected number of common neighbours of adjacent nodes, and the expected degree of a neighbour of a node of a given degree k. These expressions are written in terms of the asymptotic degree distribution and, alternatively, in terms of the parameters defining the underlying random graph model.

We study the problem of constructing mutually unbiased bases in dimension six. This approach is based on an efficient numerical method designed to find solutions to the quantum state reconstruction problem in finite dimensions. Our technique suggests the existence of previously unknown symmetries in Karlsson's non-affine family $K_6^{(2)}$ which we confirm analytically. Also, we obtain strong evidence that no more than three mutually unbiased bases can be constructed from pairs which contain members of some non-affine families of complex Hadamard matrices.

We establish the result of the title.
In combinatorial terms this has the implication that for sufficiently small eps > 0, for all n, any marking of an eps fraction of the vertices of the n-dimensional hypercube necessarily leaves a vertex x such that marked vertices are a minority of every sphere centered at x.

Recently, asymptotic values of 2-color Ramsey numbers for loose cycles and also loose paths were determined. Here we determine the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose paths when one of the paths is significantly larger than the other: for every $n\geq \Big\lfloor\frac{5m}{4}\Big\rfloor$, we show that $$R(\mathcal{P}^3_n,\mathcal{P}^3_m)=2n+\Big\lfloor\frac{m+1}{2}\Big\rfloor.$$
On the positive definiteness and eigenvalues of meet and join matrices

In this paper we study the positive definiteness of meet and join matrices using a novel approach. When the set $S_n$ is meet closed, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. From this condition we obtain some sufficient conditions for positive definiteness as corollaries. We also use graph theory and show that by making some graph theoretic assumptions on the set $S_n$ we are able to reduce the assumptions on the function $f$ while still preserving the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. Dual theorems of these results for join matrices are also presented. As examples we consider the so-called power GCD and power LCM matrices as well as MIN and MAX matrices. Finally we give bounds for the eigenvalues of meet and join matrices in cases when the function $f$ possesses certain monotonic behaviour.
