The Distinguishing Index of Mycielskian Graphs
The distinguishing index gives a measure of symmetry in a graph. Given a graph $G$ with no $K_2$ component, a distinguishing edge coloring is a coloring of the edges of $G$ such that no non-trivial automorphism preserves the edge coloring. The distinguishing index, denoted $\operatorname{Dist^{\prime}}(G)$, is the smallest number of colors needed for a distinguishing edge coloring. The Mycielskian of a graph $G$, denoted $μ(G)$, is an extension of $G$ introduced by Mycielski in 1955. In 2020, Alikhani and Soltani conjectured a relationship between $operatorname{Dist^{\prime}}(G)$ and $operatorname{Dist^{\prime}}(μ(G))$. We prove that for all graphs $G$ with at least 3 vertices, no connected $K_2$ component, and at most one isolated vertex, $\operatorname{Dist^{\prime}}(μ(G)) \le \operatorname{Dist^{\prime}}(G)$, exceeding their conjecture. We also prove analogous results about generalized Mycielskian graphs. Together with the work in 2022 of Boutin, Cockburn, Keough, Loeb, Perry, and Rombach this completes the conjecture of Alikhani and Soltani.
A Linear Lower Bound for the Square Energy of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ with eigenvalues $λ_1 \geq \cdots \geqλ_n$. Let \[s^+(G)=\sum_{λ_i>0} λ_i^2, \qquad s^-(G)=\sum_{λ_i<0} λ_i^2.\] The smaller value, $s(G)=\min\{s^+(G), s^-(G)\}$ is called the \emph{square energy} of $G$. In 2016, Elphick, Farber, Goldberg and Wocjan conjectured that for every connected graph $G$ of order $n$, $s(G)\geq n-1.$ No linear bound for $s(G)$ in terms of $n$ is known. Let $H_1, \ldots, H_k$ be disjoint vertex-induced subgraphs of $G$. In this note, we prove that \[s^+(G)\geq\sum_{i=1}^{k} s^+(H_i) \quad \text{ and } \quad s^-(G)\geq\sum_{i=1}^{k} s^-(H_i),\] which implies that $s(G)\geq \frac{3n}{4}$ for every connected graph $G$ of order $n\ge 4$.
A bounded diameter strengthening of Kőnig's Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
K\H onig's theorem says that the vertex cover number of every bipartite graph is at most its matching number (in fact they are equal since, trivially, the matching number is at most the vertex cover number). An equivalent formulation of K\H onig's theorem is that in every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic components needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$. We prove the following strengthening of K\H onig's theorem: In every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic subgraphs of bounded diameter needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$.

On Chip-Firing on Undirected Binary Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chip-firing is a combinatorial game played on an undirected graph in which we place chips on vertices. We study chip-firing on an infinite binary tree in which we add a self-loop to the root to ensure each vertex has degree 3. A vertex can fire if the number of chips placed on it is at least its degree. In our case, a vertex can fire if it has at least 3 chips, and it fires by dispersing $1$ chip to each neighbor. Motivated by a 2023 paper by Musiker and Nguyen on this setting of chip-firing, we give an upper bound for the number of stable configurations when we place $2^\ell - 1$ labeled chips at the root. When starting with $N$ chips at the root where $N$ is a positive integer, we determine the number of times each vertex fires when $N$ is not necessarily of the form $2^\ell - 1$. We also calculate the total number of fires in this case.
The ring of stable characters over $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$
For a fixed prime power $q$, let $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$ denote the family of groups $\text{GL}_N(q)$ for $N \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra of "stable" class functions of $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$, and show it admits four different linear bases, each arising naturally in different settings. One such basis is that of stable irreducible characters, namely, the class functions spanned by the characters corresponding to finitely generated simple $\mathrm{VI}$-modules in the sense of [arXiv:1408.3694,arXiv:1602.00654]. A second one comes from characters of parabolic representations. The final two, one originally defined in [arXiv:1803.04155] and the other in [arXiv:2110.11099], are more combinatorial in nature. As corollaries, we clarify many properties of these four bases and prove a conjecture from [arXiv:2106.11587].

A new class of magic positive Ehrhart polynomials of reflexive polytopes
The magic positivity of Ehrhart polynomials is a useful tool for proving the real-rootedness of the $h^\ast$-polynomials. In this paper, we provide a new class of reflexive polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomials are magic positive. First, we prove that the Ehrhart polynomials of Stasheff polytopes are magic positive. Second, we provide a partial proof of the magic positivity of the Ehrhart polynomials of the dual polytopes of the symmetric edge polytopes of cycles.
The 2-domination number of cylindrical graphs
Published in Comp. Appl. Math. 41, 424 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
A vertex subset S of a graph G is said to 2-dominate the graph if each vertex not in S has at least two neighbors in it. As usual, the associated parameter is the minimum cardinal of a 2-dominating set, which is called the 2-domination number of the graph G. We present both lower and upper bounds of the 2-domination number of cylinders, which are the Cartesian products of a path and a cycle. These bounds allow us to compute the exact value of the 2-domination number of cylinders where the path is arbitrary, and the order of the cycle is n $\equiv$ 0(mod 3) and as large as desired. In the case of the lower bound, we adapt the technique of the wasted domination to this parameter and we use the so-called tropical matrix product to obtain the desired bound. Moreover, we provide a regular patterned construction of a minimum 2-dominating set in the cylinders having the mentioned cycle order.

On generic 3-rigidity of graphs
We give a necessary condition of generic 3 -rigidity of graphs relying on partitioning the edges into 3 subsets; such that each subset-pair gives a generically 2-rigid graph, either by themselves or after an appropriate edge-deletion. Notably, as pointed out by Dewar and Gallet, the condition is still not sufficient.

Flag complex face structures and decompositions
One of the most common and effective methods of obtaining structural information on simplicial complexes is to use tools from algebraic geometry/commutative algebra (often motivated by properties of toric varieties). However, there is no general algebro-geometric description of components of the gamma vector holding for arbitary flag simplicial spheres. This invariant occurs in many different contexts including permutation statistics, signatures of toric varieties, and Euler characteristics of nonpositively curved piecewise Euclidean manifolds. Combinatorial methods resulting from an explicit inverted Chebyshev expansion give rise to new positivity properties and cell complex structures that are of interest in their own right. Note that the focus is on the $f$-vector rather than the $h$-vector in ``algebraic'' settings. For flag simplicial spheres $Δ$, the fact that $h(Δ) = f(Γ)$ and compatibility between Chebyshev expansions and a modification of the $f$-polynomial by work of Hetyei are the key inputs. In the main formula implying new positivity results, local structures of $CAT(0)$ complexes and cubical analogues of barycentric subdivisions give deeper connections with cubical complex structures complementing earlier work related to the top gamma vector component. Afterwards, we return to the motivating example of barycentric subdivisions and consider how $f$-vectors of Cohen--Macaulay and vertex decomposable flag complexes in geometric settings decompose and interact with geometric transformations. This includes subdivisions of simplicial complexes and recursive properties they share with vertex decomposable flag complexes.

A variant of the Erdős-Gyárfás problem for $K_8$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Alon initiated the study of graph codes and their linear variants in analogy to the study of error correcting codes in theoretical computer science. Alon related the maximum density of a linear graph code which avoids images of a small graph $H$ to the following variant of the Erdős-Gyárfás problem on edge-colourings of $K_n$. A copy of $H$ in an edge-colouring of $K_n$ is even-chromatic if each colour occupies an even number of edges in the copy. We seek an edge-colouring of $K_n$ using $n^{o(1)}$ colours such that there are no even-chromatic copies of $H$. Such an edge-colouring is conjectured to exist for all cliques $K_t$ with an even number of edges. To date, edge-colourings satisfying this property have been constructed for $K_4$ and $K_5$. We construct an edge-colouring using $n^{o(1)}$ colours which avoids even-chromatic copies of $K_8$. This was the smallest open case of the above conjecture, as $K_6, K_7$ each has an odd number of edges. We also study a stronger condition on edge-colourings, where for each copy of $H$, there is a colour occupying exactly one edge in the copy. We conjecture that an edge-colouring using $n^{o(1)}$ colours and satisfying this stronger requirement exists for all cliques $K_t$ regardless of the parity of the number of its edges. We construct edge-colourings satisfying this stronger property for $K_4$ and $K_5$. These constructions also improve upon the number of colours needed for the original problem of avoiding even-chromatic copies of $K_4$ and $K_5$.

Expander estimates for cubes
If $\mathscr A$ is a set of natural numbers of exponential density $δ$, then the exponential density of all numbers of the form $x^3+a$ with $x\in\mathbb N$ and $a\in\mathscr A$ is at least $\min(1, \frac 13+\frac 56 δ)$. This is a considerable improvement on the previous best lower bounds for this problem, obtained by Davenport more than 80 years ago. The result is the best possible for $δ\ge \frac 45$.
Concentration of information on discrete groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Asymptotic Equipartition Property and its recently discovered role in the cutoff phenomenon, we initiate the systematic study of varentropy on discrete groups. Our main result is an approximate tensorization inequality which asserts that the varentropy of any conjugacy-invariant random walk is, up to a universal multiplicative constant, at most that of the free Abelian random walk with the same jump rates. In particular, it is always bounded by the number d of generators, uniformly in time and in the size of the group. This universal estimate is sharp and can be seen as a discrete analogue of a celebrated result of Bobkov and Madiman concerning random d-dimensional vectors with a log-concave density (AOP 2011). A key ingredient in our proof is the fact that conjugacy-invariant random walks have non-negative Bakry-Émery curvature, a result which seems new and of independent interest.

Symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper develops elementary linear algebra methods to compute the determinants of the tensor symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms over fields of good characteristic. Explicit results are given for the partitions $(n)$, $(1^n)$, $(2,1^{n-2})$ and $(3,1^{n-3})$ as well as for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. For orthogonal groups these symmetrizations are not irreducible and we continue to find the determinants of their irreducible constituents, the refined symmetrizations, over fields of characteristic 0.

Enumerating all geodesics
By "geodesic" we mean any sequence of vertices $(v_1,v_2,...,v_k)$ of a graph $G$ that constitute a shortest path from $v_1$ to $v_k$. We propose a novel, natural algorithm to enumerate all geodesics of $G$, and pit it (using Mathematica) against the standard procedure for the task. The distance matrix $D(G)$ plays a crucial role in this. In fact, part of our article is devoted to survey its many uses in related tasks.

Combinatorial interpretation of the Schlesinger-Zudilin stuffle product
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive an explicit formula for the quasi--shuffle product satisfied by Schlesinger--Zudilin Multiple~$q$-Zeta Values, expressed in terms of partition data. To achieve this, we interpret Schlesinger--Zudilin Multiple~$q$-Zeta Values as generating series of distinguished marked partitions, which are partitions whose Young diagrams have certain rows and columns marked. Together with the description of duality using marked partitions in~\cite{Br2}, and Bachmanns conjecture~(\cite{BaTalk}) that all linear relations among Multiple~$q$-Zeta Values are implied by duality and the stuffle product, this paper completes the description of the conjectural structure of Multiple~$q$-Zeta Values using marked partitions.

A Cubical Perspective on Complements of Union-Closed Families of Sets
Complements of union-closed families of sets, over a finite ground set, are known as simply rooted families of sets. Cubical sets are widely studied topological objects having applications in computational homology. In this paper, we look at simply rooted families of sets from the perspective of cubical sets. That is, for every family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of a finite set, we construct a natural cubical set $X(\mathcal F)$ (corresponding to it). We show that for every simply rooted family $\mathcal F$, containing the empty set, the cubical set $X(\mathcal F)$ is always acyclic (that is, it has trivial reduced cubical homology). As a consequence of this, using the Euler-Poincarè formula, we obtain a formula satisfied by all simply rooted families of sets which contain the empty set. We also provide an elementary proof of this formula.

Empty red-red-blue triangles
Let $P$ be a $2n$-point set in the plane that is in general position. We prove that every red-blue bipartition of $P$ into $R$ and $B$ with $|R| = |B| = n$ generates $Ω(n^{3/2})$ red-red-blue empty triangles.

Pentagon Minimization without Computation
Erdős and Guy initiated a line of research studying $μ_k(n)$, the minimum number of convex $k$-gons one can obtain by placing $n$ points in the plane without any three of them being collinear. Asymptotically, the limits $c_k := \lim_{n\to \infty} μ_k(n)/\binom{n}{k}$ exist for all $k$, and are strictly positive due to the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. This article focuses on the case $k=5$, where $c_5$ was known to be between $0.0608516$ and $0.0625$ (Goaoc et al., 2018; Subercaseaux et al., 2023). The lower bound was obtained through the Flag Algebra method of Razborov using semi-definite programming. In this article we prove a more modest lower bound of $\frac{5\sqrt{5}-11}{4} \approx 0.04508$ without any computation; we exploit``planar-point equations'' that count, in different ways, the number of convex pentagons (or other geometric objects) in a point placement. To derive our lower bound we combine such equations by viewing them from a statistical perspective, which we believe can be fruitful for other related problems.

Sums of dilates over groups of prime order
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $p$ prime, $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ and $λ\in \mathbb{Z}$, the sum of dilates $A + λ\cdot A$ is defined by \[A + λ\cdot A = \{a + λa' : a, a' \in A\}.\] The basic problem on such sums of dilates asks for the minimum size of $|A + λ\cdot A|$ for given $λ$, $A$ of given density $α$, and $p$ tending to infinity. We investigate this problem for $α$ fixed and $λ$ tending to infinity, proving near-optimal bounds in this case.
