We revive an old lateral-thinking puzzle by Michael Rabin, involving poisons with strange properties. We show that the puzzle admits several unintended solutions that are just as interesting as the intended solution. Analyzing these alternative solutions using game theory yields surprisingly subtle results and several unanswered questions.
A combinatorial interpretation of Mahonian numbers of type B
In this paper, we first introduce the number of signed permutations with exactly $k$ inversions, which is denoted by $i_B(n,k)$ and called \textit{Mahonian numbers of type $B$}. Then we provide a recurrence relation for the Mahonian numbers $i_B(n,k)$. In addition, we give an explicit recursive description for the summation of inversions of all permutations in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$, denoted by $\mathcal{B}_n$. Furthermore, we enumerate the total number of inversions in permutations in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ concretely with the help of an inversion statistic and a backward permutation concepts on $B_n$.

We show that for all $A, B \subseteq \{0,1,2\}^{d}$ we have $$ |A+B|\geq (|A||B|)^{\log(5)/(2\log(3))}. $$ We also show that for all finite $A,B \subset \mathbb{Z}^{d}$, and any $V \subseteq\{0,1\}^{d}$ the inequality $$ |A+B+V|\geq |A|^{1/p}|B|^{1/q}|V|^{\log_{2}(p^{1/p}q^{1/q})} $$ holds for all $p \in (1, \infty)$, where $q=\frac{p}{p-1}$ is the conjugate exponent of $p$. All the estimates are dimension free with the best possible exponents. We discuss applications to various related problems.
The interplay between additive and symmetric large sets and their combinatorial applications
The study of symmetric structures is a new trend in Ramsey theory. Recently in [7], Di Nasso initiated a systematic study of symmetrization of classical Ramsey theoretical results, and proved a symmetric version of several Ramsey theoretic results. In this paper Di Nasso asked if his method could be adapted to find new non-linear Diophantine equations that are partition regular [7,Final remarks (4)]. By analyzing additive, multiplicative, and symmetric large sets, we construct new partition regular equations that give a first affirmative answer to this question. A special case of our result shows that if $P$ is a polynomial with no constant term then the equation $x+P(y-x)=z+w+zw$, where $y\neq x$ is partition regular. Also we prove several new monochromatic patterns involving additive, multiplicative, and symmetric structures. Throughout our work, we use tools from the Algebra of the Stone-Čech Compactifications of discrete semigroups.

To study the fixed parameter undecidability of tiling problem for a set of Wang tiles, Jeandel and Rolin show that the tiling problem for a set of 44 Wang bars is undecidable. In this paper, we improve their result by proving that whether a set of 29 Wang bars can tile the plane is undecidable. As a consequence, the tiling problem for a set of Wang tiles with color deficiency of 25 is also undecidable.
From quasi-symmetric to Schur expansions with applications to symmetric chain decompositions and plethysm

It is an important problem in algebraic combinatorics to deduce the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function whose expansion in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric function is known. For example, formulas are known for the fundamental expansion of a Macdonald symmetric function and for the plethysm of two Schur functions, while the Schur expansions of these expressions are still elusive. Egge, Loehr and Warrington provided a method to obtain the Schur expansion from the fundamental expansion by replacing each quasisymmetric function by a Schur function (not necessarily indexed by a partition) and using straightening rules to obtain the Schur expansion. Here we provide a new method that only involves the coefficients of the quasisymmetric functions indexed by partitions and the quasi-Kostka matrix. As an application, we identify the lexicographically largest term in the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. We provide the Schur expansion of $s_w[s_h](x,y)$ for $w=2,3,4$ using novel symmetric chain decompositions of Young's lattice for partitions in a $w\times h$ box. For $w=4$, this is first known combinatorial expression for the coefficient of $s_λ$ in $s_{w}[s_{h}]$ for two-row partitions $λ$, and for $w=3$ the combinatorial expression is new.

Biases in integer partitions have been studied recently. For three disjoint subsets $R,S,I$ of positive integers, let $p_{RSI}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with parts from $R\cup S\cup I$ and $p_{R>S,I}(n)$ be the number of such partitions with more parts from $R$ than that from $S$. In this paper, in the case that $R,S,I$ are finite we obtain a concrete formula of the asymptotic ratio of $p_{R>S,I}(n)$ to $p_{RSI}(n)$. We also propose a conjecture in the case that $R,S$ are certain infinite arithmetic progressions.

A bipartite graph $G=(V,E)$ with $V=V_1\cup V_2$ is biregular if all the vertices of each stable set, $V_1$ and $V_2$, have the same degree, $r$ and $s$, respectively. This paper studies difference sets derived from both Abelian and non-Abelian groups. From them, we propose some constructions of bipartite biregular graphs with diameter $d=3$ and asymptotically optimal order for given degrees $r$ and $s$. Moreover, we find some biMoore graphs, that is, bipartite biregular graphs that attain the Moore bound.

The class of $k$-nearly finitary matroids for some natural number $k$ is a subclass of the class of nearly finitary matroids. A natural question is whether this inclusion is proper. We answer this question affirmatively by constructing a nearly finitary matroid that is not $k$-nearly finitary for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$.
Projective Geometries and Simple Pointed Matroids as $\mathbb{F}_1$-modules
We describe a fully faithful embedding of projective geometries, given in terms of closure operators, into $\mathbb{F}_1$-modules, in the sense of Connes and Consani. This factors through a faithful functor out of simple pointed matroids. This follows from our construction of a fully faithful embedding of weakly unital, commutative hypermagmas into $\fun$-modules. This embedding is of independent interest as it generalizes the classical Eilenberg-MacLane embedding for commutative monoids and recovers Segal's nerve construction for commutative partial monoids. For this reason, we spend some time elaborating its structure.
The Low-Degree Hardness of Finding Large Independent Sets in Sparse Random Hypergraphs

We study the algorithmic task of finding large independent sets in Erdos-Renyi $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices having average degree $d$. Krivelevich and Sudakov showed that the maximum independent set has density $\left(\frac{r\log d}{(r-1)d}\right)^{1/(r-1)}$. We show that the class of low-degree polynomial algorithms can find independent sets of density $\left(\frac{\log d}{(r-1)d}\right)^{1/(r-1)}$ but no larger. This extends and generalizes earlier results of Gamarnik and Sudan, Rahman and Virag, and Wein on graphs, and answers a question of Bal and Bennett. We conjecture that this statistical-computational gap holds for this problem.
Additionally, we explore the universality of this gap by examining $r$-partite hypergraphs. A hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ is $r$-partite if there is a partition $V=V_1\cup\cdots\cup V_r$ such that each edge contains exactly one vertex from each set $V_i$. We consider the problem of finding large balanced independent sets (independent sets containing the same number of vertices in each partition) in random $r$-partite hypergraphs with $n$ vertices in each partition and average degree $d$. We prove that the maximum balanced independent set has density $\left(\frac{r\log d}{(r-1)d}\right)^{1/(r-1)}$ asymptotically. Furthermore, we prove an analogous low-degree computational threshold of $\left(\frac{\log d}{(r-1)d}\right)^{1/(r-1)}$. Our results recover and generalize recent work of Perkins and the second author on bipartite graphs.
While the graph case has been extensively studied, this work is the first to consider statistical-computational gaps of optimization problems on random hypergraphs. Our results suggest that these gaps persist for larger uniformities as well as across many models. A somewhat surprising aspect of the gap for balanced independent sets is that the algorithm achieving the lower bound is a simple degree-1 polynomial.
Remarks on the conjectures of Capparelli, Meurman, Primc and Primc
In a sequence of two papers, S. Capparelli, A. Meurman, A. Primc, M. Primc (CMPP) and then M. Primc put forth three remarkable sets of conjectures, stating that the generating functions of coloured integer partition in which the parts satisfy restrictions on the multiplicities admit simple infinite product forms. While CMPP related one set of conjectures to the principally specialised characters of standard modules for the affine Lie algebra $\mathrm{C}_n^{(1)}$, finding a Lie-algebraic interpretation for the remaining two sets remained an open problem. In this paper, we use the work of Griffin, Ono and the fourth author on Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras to solve this problem, relating the remaining two sets of conjectures to non-standard specialisations of standard modules for $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ and $\mathrm{D}_{n+1}^{(2)}$. We also use their work to formulate conjectures for the bivariate generating function of one-parameter families of CMPP partitions in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We make a detailed study of several further aspects of CMPP partitions, obtaining (i) functional equations for bivariate generating functions which generalise the well-known Rogers-Selberg equations, (ii) a partial level-rank duality in the $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ case, and (iii) (conjectural) identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type for $\mathrm{D}_3^{(2)}$.

Let $H$ be a normal subgroup of a group $G$. The normal subgroup based power graph $Γ_H(G)$ of $G$ is the simple undirected graph with vertex set $V(Γ_H(G))= (G\setminus H)\cup \{e\}$ and two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if either $aH = b^m H$ or $bH=a^nH$ for some $m,n \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper, we continue the study of normal subgroup based power graph and characterize all the pairs $(G,H)$, where $H$ is a non-trivial normal subgroup of $G$, such that the genus of $Γ_H(G)$ is at most $2$. Moreover, we determine all the subgroups $H$ and the quotient groups $\frac{G}{H}$ such that the cross-cap of $Γ_H(G)$ is at most three.
Generalised Checkerboard Lattices
A series of integral lattices parametrised by integers $k,m,n$ are introduced and investigated, where $n$ is the rank of the lattice, including the root lattices described in a uniform way and unimodular lattices such as the Niemeier lattices of type $A_{24}$ and $D_{24}$. The lattices are characterised by means of a sublattice isomorphic to the root lattice of type $A_{n-1}$. A sufficient condition for existence of an orthogonal $k$-frame of such a lattice is given in terms of symmetric $2$-designs.
Macdonald characters from a new formula for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a new operator $Γ$ on symmetric functions, which enables us to obtain a creation formula for Macdonald polynomials. This formula provides a connection between the theory of Macdonald operators initiated by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler, and shifted Macdonald polynomials introduced by Knop, Lassalle, Okounkov and Sahi.
We use this formula to introduce a two-parameter generalization of Jack characters, which we call Macdonald characters. Finally, we provide a change of variables in order to formulate several positivity conjectures related to these generalized characters. Our conjectures extend some important open problems on Jack polynomials, including some famous conjectures of Goulden and Jackson.
$A_α$-energy of graphs formed by some unary operations
Let $G $ be a graph on $p$ vertices with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and degree matrix $D(G)$. For each $α\in [0, 1]$, the $A_α$-matrix is defined as $A_α(G) = αD(G) + (1 - α)A(G)$. In this paper, we compute the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial, $A_α$-spectra and $A_α$-energy of some non-regular graphs obtained from unary operations on graphs like middle graph, central graph, m-splitting, and closed splitting graph. Also, we determine the $A_α$-energy of regular graphs like m-shadow, closed shadow, extended bipartite double graph, iterated line graph and m-duplicate graph. Furthermore, we identified some graphs that are $A_α$-equieneregetic and $A_α$-borderenergetic.
On combinatorial structure and algebraic characterizations of distance-regular digraphs
Let $Γ=Γ(A)$ denote a simple strongly connected digraph with vertex set $X$, diameter $D$, and let $\{A_0,A:=A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_D\}$ denote the set of distance-$i$ matrices of $Γ$. Let $\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D$ denote a partition of $X\times X$, where $R_i=\{(x,y)\in X\times X\mid (A_i)_{xy}=1\}$ $(0\le i\le D)$. The digraph $Γ$ is distance-regular if and only if $(X,\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D)$ is a commutative association scheme. In this paper, we describe the combinatorial structure of $Γ$ in the sense of equitable partition, and from it we derive several new algebraic characterizations of such a graph, including the spectral excess theorem for distance-regular digraph. Along the way, we also rediscover all well-known algebraic characterizations of such graphs.

We establish a link between open positroid varieties in the Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ and certain moduli spaces of complexes of vector bundles over Kodaira cycle $C^n$, using the shifted Poisson structure on the latter moduli spaces and relating them to a certain twist of the standard Poisson structure on $G(k,n)$. %by a bivector field on its maximal torus. This link allows us to solve a classification problem for extensions of vector bundles over $C^n$. Based on this solution we further classify the symplectic leaves of all positroid varieties in $G(k,n)$ with respect to the twisted standard Poisson structure. Moreover, we get an explicit description of the moduli stack of symplectic leaves of $G(k,n)$ with the twisted standard Poisson structure as an open substack of the stack of vector bundles on $C^n$.
Matchings in the hypercube with specified edges
Given a matching $M$ in the hypercube $Q^n$, the \emph{profile} of $M$ is the vector $\boldsymbol{x}=(x_1,\ldots, x_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$ such that $M$ contains $x_i$ edges whose endpoints differ in the $i$th coordinate. If $M$ is a perfect matching, then it is clear that $||\boldsymbol{x}||_1 = 2^{n-1}$ and it is easy to show that each $x_i$ must be even. Verifying a special case of a conjecture of Balister, Győri, and Schelp, we show that these conditions are also sufficient.
