On the zero-free region for the chromatic polynomial of claw-free graphs with and without induced square and induced diamond
Given a claw-free graph $G=(V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$, we define the parameter $κ\in [0,1]$ as $κ={\max_{v\in V}|I_v|\over \lfloorΔ^2/4\rfloor}$ where $I_v$ is the set of all independent pairs in the neighborhood of $v$. We refer to $κ$ as the pair independence ratio of $G$. We prove that for any claw-free graph $G$ with pair independence ratio at most $κ$ the zeros of its chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ lie inside the disk $D=\{q\in \mathbb{C}:~|q|< C_κ^0Δ\}$, where $C_κ^0$ is an increasing function of $κ\in [0,1]$. If $G$ is also square-free and diamond free, the function $C_κ^0$ can be replaced by a sharper function $C_κ^1$. These bounds constitute an improvement upon results recently given by Bencs and Regts in ''Improved bounds on the zeros of the chromatic polynomial of graphs and claw-free graphs''.

On the independent set polynomial of graphs and claw-free graphs
We present two new contributions to the study of the independence polynomial $Z_G(z)$ of a finite simple graph $G = (V,E)$. First, we provide an improved lower bound for the zero-free region of $Z_G(z)$ for the important class of claw-free graphs. Our bound exceeds the classical Shearer radius and it is derived through a refined application of the Fernández-Procacci criterion using properties of the local neighborhood structure in claw-free graphs. Second, we establish a novel combinatorial expression for $Z_G(z)$, inspired by the connection with the abstract polymer gas models in statistical mechanics, which offers a new structural interpretation of the polynomial and may be of independent interest. These results strengthen the connection between statistical physics, combinatorics, and graph theory, and suggest new approaches for analytic exploration.
On the zero-free region for the chromatic polynomial of graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ and girth $g$
The purpose of the present paper is to provide, for all pairs of integers $(Δ,g)$ with $\D\ge 3$ and $g\ge 3$, a positive number $C(Δ, g)$ such that chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ of a graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ and finite girth $g$ is free of zero if $|q|\ge C(Δ, g)$. Our bounds enlarge the zero-free region in the complex plane of $P_G(q)$ in comparison to previous bounds. In particular, for small values of $\D$ our estimates yield a sensible improvement on the bounds recently obtained by Jenssen, Patel and Regts in \cite{JPR}, while they coincide with those of \cite{JPR} when $Δ\to \infty$.
A remark on the Whitney Broken Circuit Theorem
In the present note we show, via the connection between chromatic polynomial and Potts model, that the Whitney Broken circuit theorem is in fact a special case of a more general identity relating the chromatic polynomial of a graph G=(V,E) to sums over forests of G associated to some partition scheme in G.
Absolute convergence of the free energy of the BEG model in the disordered region for all temperatures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the d-dimensional Blume-Emery-Griffiths model in the disordered region of parameters and we show that its free energy can be explicitly written in term of a series which is absolutely convergent at any temperature in an unbounded portion of this region. As a byproduct we also obtain an upper bound for the number of d-dimensional fixed polycubes of size n.
Moser-Tardos resampling algorithm, entropy compression method and the subset gas
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a connection between the entropy compression method and the Moser-Tardos algorithmic version of the Lovász local lemma through the cluster expansion of the subset gas. We also show that the Moser-Tardos resampling algorithm and the entropy compression bactracking algorithm produce identical bounds.
A new bound on the acyclic edge chromatic index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we obtain a new bound for the acyclic edge chromatic number $a'(G)$ of a graph $G$ with maximum degree $D$ proving that $a'(G)\leq 3.569(D-1)$. To get this result we revisit and slightly modify the method described in [Giotis, Kirousis, Psaromiligkos and Thilikos, Theoretical Computer Science, 66: 40-50, 2017].

Perfect and separating Hash families: new bounds via the algorithmic cluster expansion local lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present new lower bounds for the size of perfect and separating hash families ensuring their existence. Such new bounds are based on the algorithmic Cluster expansion improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma, which also implies that the Moser-Tardos algorithm finds such hash families in polynomial time.

A local lemma via entropy compression
In the framework of the probabilistic method in combinatorics, we revisit the entropy compression method clarifying the setting in which it can be applied and providing a theorem yielding a general constructive criterion. We finally elucidate, through topical examples, the effectiveness of the entropy-compression criterion in comparison with the Lovasz Local Lemma criterion and, in particular, with the improved criterion based on cluster expansion.
A-priori Upper Bounds for the Set Covering Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a new bound obtained with the probabilistic method for the solution of the Set Covering problem with unit costs. The bound is valid for problems of fixed dimension, thus extending previous similar asymptotic results, and it depends only on the number of rows of the coefficient matrix and the row densities. We also consider the particular case of matrices that are \textit{almost} block decomposable, and show how the bound may improve according to the particular decomposition adopted. Such final result may provide interesting indications for comparing different matrix decomposition strategies.
Properly coloured copies and rainbow copies of large graphs with small maximum degree
Let G be a graph on n vertices with maximum degree D. We use the Lovász local lemma to show the following two results about colourings c of the edges of the complete graph K_n. If for each vertex v of K_n the colouring c assigns each colour to at most (n-2)/22.4D^2 edges emanating from v, then there is a copy of G in K_n which is properly edge-coloured by c. This improves on a result of Alon, Jiang, Miller, and Pritikin [Random Struct. Algorithms 23(4), 409-433, 2003]. On the other hand, if c assigns each colour to at most n/51D^2 edges of K_n, then there is a copy of G in K_n such that each edge of G receives a different colour from c. This proves a conjecture of Frieze and Krivelevich [Electron. J. Comb. 15(1), R59, 2008]. Our proofs rely on a framework developed by Lu and Székely [Electron. J. Comb. 14(1), R63, 2007] for applying the local lemma to random injections. In order to improve the constants in our results we use a version of the local lemma due to Bissacot, Fernández, Procacci, and Scoppola [preprint, arXiv:0910.1824].

Improved bounds on coloring of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 3$, we prove that the acyclic edge chromatic number $a'(G)$ of $G$ is such that $a'(G)\le\lceil 9.62 (Δ-1)\rceil$. Moreover we prove that: $a'(G)\le \lceil 6.42(Δ-1)\rceil$ if $G$ has girth $g\ge 5\,$; $a'(G)\le \lceil5.77 (Δ-1)\rc$ if $G$ has girth $g\ge 7$; $a'(G)\le \lc4.52(\D-1)\rc$ if $g\ge 53$; $a'(G)\le \D+2\,$ if $g\ge \lceil25.84\D\log\D(1+ 4.1/\log\D)\rceil$. We further prove that the acyclic (vertex) chromatic number $a(G)$ of $G$ is such that $a(G)\le \lc 6.59 Δ^{4/3}+3.3\D\rc$. We also prove that the star-chromatic number $χ_s(G)$ of $G$ is such that $χ_s(G)\le \lc4.34Δ^{3/2}+ 1.5\D\rc$. We finally prove that the $\b$-frugal chromatic number $χ^\b(G)$ of $G$ is such that $χ^\b(G)\le \lc\max\{k_1(\b)\D,\; k_2(\b){\D^{1+1/\b}/ (\b!)^{1/\b}}\}\rc$, where $k_1(\b)$ and $k_2(\b)$ are decreasing functions of $\b$ such that $k_1(\b)\in[4, 6]$ and $k_2(\b)\in[2,5]$. To obtain these results we use an improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma due to Bissacot, Fernández, Procacci and Scoppola \cite{BFPS}.
An Improvement of the Lovász Local Lemma via Cluster Expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
An old result by Shearer relates the Lovász Local Lemma with the independent set polynomial on graphs, and consequently, as observed by Scott and Sokal, with the partition function of the hard core lattice gas on graphs. We use this connection and a recent result on the analyticity of the logarithm of the partition function of the abstract polymer gas to get an improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma. As applications we obtain tighter bounds on conditions for the existence of latin transversal matrices and the satisfiability of k-SAT forms.

Complex zero-free regions at large |q| for multivariate Tutte polynomials (alias Potts-model partition functions) with general complex edge weights
Published in J. Combin. Theory B 103, 21-45 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We find zero-free regions in the complex plane at large |q| for the multivariate Tutte polynomial (also known in statistical mechanics as the Potts-model partition function) Z_G(q,w) of a graph G with general complex edge weights w = {w_e}. This generalizes a result of Sokal (cond-mat/9904146) that applies only within the complex antiferromagnetic regime |1+w_e| \le 1. Our proof uses the polymer-gas representation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial together with the Penrose identity.

Abstract polymer models with general pair interactions
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics 129, n.1 171-188 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
A convergence criterion of cluster expansion is presented in the case of an abstract polymer system with general pair interactions (i.e. not necessarily hard core or repulsive). As a concrete example, the low temperature disordered phase of the BEG model with infinite range interactions, decaying polynomially as $1/r^{d+λ}$ with $λ>0$, is studied.

Regions without complex zeros for chromatic polynomials on graphs with bounded degree
We prove that the chromatic polynomial $P_\mathbb{G}(q)$ of a finite graph $\mathbb{G}$ of maximal degree $\D$ is free of zeros for $\card q\ge C^*(\D)$ with $$ C^*(\D) = \min_{0<x<2^{1\over \D}-1} {(1+x)^{\D-1}\over x [2-(1+x)^\D]} $$ This improves results by Sokal (2001) and Borgs (2005). Furthermore, we present a strengthening of this condition for graphs with no triangle-free vertices.
