On externally supported independence number of graphs
We introduce the \emph{externally supported independence number} $α_{\rm es}(G)$ of a graph $G$ as the maximum cardinality of an independent set $B$ with an additional condition, that vertices from $N(B)$ are dominated by vertices in $V(G)-N[B]$. This parameter yields an improved upper bound on the isolation number $ι(G)$. We show that computing $α_{\rm es}(G)$ is NP-hard, while for trees we present a linear-time algorithm. We also establish several sharp bounds on $α_{\rm es}(G)$ for general graphs, with additional refined results for trees. In several cases, we completely describe the extreme graph classes attaining these bounds.
On $k$-limited domination in graphs
In this work, we introduce and study the notion of $k$-limited domination in graphs, motivated by applications where dominating vertices have bounded capacity and cannot be overloaded by too many external neighbors. Formally, given an integer $k \le Δ(G)$, a set of vertices $D \subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-limited dominating set if it is a dominating set and, in addition, each vertex of $D$ has at most $k$ neighbors outside $D$. The minimum cardinality of such a set is the $k$-limited domination number, denoted by $γ_k^{\mathrm{L}}(G)$. Since $Δ(G)$-limited domination coincides with the classical domination, we restrict our attention to the nontrivial range $1 \le k < Δ(G)$, where the degree limitation becomes meaningful and leads to new combinatorial phenomena. In this paper, we initiate the study of this concept by deriving sharp general bounds for $γ_k^{\mathrm{L}}(G)(G)$ and identifying conditions under which these bounds can be further improved. We establish a connection between $k$-limited domination and $(1,t)$-domination. In particular, for $d$-regular graphs we prove that $γ_k^{\mathrm{L}}(G)(G)=γ_{1,d-k}(G)$. In the special case $k=1$, we show that $1$-limited domination is tightly linked to graph packings, yielding the bound $γ^{\mathrm L}_1(G) \le n - ρ(G)$ and its characterization. The study reveals several natural open questions and indicates that limited domination provides a rich ground for further research.

On $k$-limited domination: complexity and Cartesian products
A dominating set is called $k$-limited if every vertex in the set has at most $k$ neighbors outside it. The minimum cardinality of a $k$-limited dominating set is the $k$-limited domination number, denoted by $γ_k^{\mathrm{L}}(G)$. We prove that, for every fixed integer $k\ge 2$, deciding whether a graph admits a $k$-limited dominating set of size at most $\ell$ is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete. In addition, a systematic study of $k$-limited domination in Cartesian products is initiated. In particular, we establish general lower and upper bounds for $γ_k^{\mathrm{L}}(G\square H)$, show that both are sharp, and derive exact values for several natural families of graph products. Among others, we obtain exact results for rook graphs, Cartesian products of $k$-coronas, certain grid graphs, and several cases involving prisms and hypercubes.
Isolation number: Cartesian and lexicographic products and generalized Sierpiński graphs
The isolation number $ι(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set $A\subset V(G)$ such that the subgraph induced by the vertices that are not in the union of the closed neighborhoods of vertices in $A$ has no edges. The invariant, known also under the name vertex-edge domination number of $G$, has attracted a lot of interest in recent years. In this paper, we study the behavior of the isolation number under several graph operations, namely the Cartesian and the lexicographic product and the fractalization leading to generalized Sierpiński graphs. We prove several upper and lower bounds on the isolation number of the Cartesian product of two graphs. We prove a lower bound for the isolation number of the prism $G\,\Box\, K_2$ over an arbitrary graph $G$, which in the case of bipartite graphs leads to the equality $ι(G\,\Box\, K_2)=γ(G)$, where $γ(G)$ is the domination number of $G$. In particular, $ι(Q_{n+1})=γ(Q_n)$ holds for all positive integers $n$, where $Q_n$ is the $n$-dimensional hypercube. For the lexicographic product $G\circ H$ we prove that its isolation number, under certain mild restrictions, equals the total domination number of the first factor $G$. We also prove sharp lower and upper bounds on the isolation numbers of the generalized Sierpiński graphs $S_G^t$, where $G$ is an arbitrary base graph. These bounds in the case of classical Sierpiński graphs, namely $S_{K_n}^t$, coincide and lead to the exact values $ι(S_{K_n}^t)=(n-1)\cdot n^{t-2}$ for all dimensions $t\ge 2$.
Selected topics on Wiener index
The Wiener index is defined as the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in a graph. It is one of the most recognized and well-researched topological indices, which is on the other hand still a very active area of research. This work presents a natural continuation of the paper Mathematical aspects of Wiener index (Ars Math. Contemp., 2016) in which several interesting open questions on the topic were outlined. Here we collect answers gathered so far, give further insights on the topic of extremal values of Wiener index in different settings, and present further intriguing problems and conjectures.
Domination versus independent domination in regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is in $S$ or is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. If, in addition, $S$ is an independent set, then $S$ is an independent dominating set. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in $G$, while the independent domination number $i(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of an independent dominating set in $G$. We prove that for all integers $k \geq 3$ it holds that if $G$ is a connected $k$-regular graph, then $\frac{i(G)}{γ(G)} \leq \frac{k}{2}$, with equality if and only if $G = K_{k,k}$. The result was previously known only for $k\leq 6$. This affirmatively answers a recent question of Babikir and Henning.
Bounding the k-rainbow total domination number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently the notion of $k$-rainbow total domination was introduced for a graph $G$, motivated by a desire to reduce the problem of computing the total domination number of the generalized prism $G \Box K_k$ to an integer labeling problem on $G$. In this paper we further demonstrate usefulness of the labeling approach, presenting bounds on the rainbow total domination number in terms of the total domination number, the rainbow domination number and the rainbow total domination number, as well as the usual domination number, where the latter presents a generalization of a result by Goddard and Henning (2018). We establish Vizing-like results for rainbow domination and rainbow total domination. By stating a Vizing-like conjecture for rainbow total domination we present a different viewpoint on Vizing's original conjecture in the case of bipartite graphs.
On $k$-rainbow independent domination in graphs
In this paper, we define a new domination invariant on a graph $G$, which coincides with the ordinary independent domination number of the generalized prism $G \Box K_k$, called the $k$-rainbow independent domination number and denoted by $γ_{{\rm ri}k}(G)$. Some bounds and exact values concerning this domination concept are determined. As a main result, we prove a Nordhaus-Gaddum-type theorem on the sum for $2$-rainbow independent domination number, and show if G is a graph of order $n \geq 3$, then $5\leq γ_{{\rm ri}2}(G)+γ_{{\rm ri}2}(\overline{G})\leq n+3$, with both bounds being sharp.
On the minimum value of sum-Balaban index
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider extremal values of sum-Balaban index among graphs on $n$ vertices. We determine that the upper bound for the minimum value of the sum-Balaban index is at most $4.47934$ when $n$ goes to infinity. For small values of $n$ we determine the extremal graphs and we observe that they are similar to dumbbell graphs, in most cases having one extra edge added to the corresponding extreme for the usual Balaban index. We show that in the class of balanced dumbbell graphs, those with clique sizes $\sqrt[4]{\sqrt 2\log\big(1+\sqrt 2\big)}\sqrt n+o(\sqrt n)$ have asymptotically the smallest value of sum-Balaban index. We pose several conjectures and problems regarding this topic.

The Wiener index (i.e., the total distance or the transmission number), defined as the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in a graph, is one of the most popular molecular descriptors. In this article we summarize some results, conjectures and problems on this molecular descriptor, with emphasis on works we were involved in.
Partitioning the vertex set of $G$ to make $G\,\Box\, H$ an efficient open domination graph
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 3, Graph Theory (June 2, 2016) dmtcs:1277 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is an efficient open domination graph if there exists a subset of vertices whose open neighborhoods partition its vertex set. We characterize those graphs $G$ for which the Cartesian product $G \Box H$ is an efficient open domination graph when $H$ is a complete graph of order at least 3 or a complete bipartite graph. The characterization is based on the existence of a certain type of weak partition of $V(G)$. For the class of trees when $H$ is complete of order at least 3, the characterization is constructive. In addition, a special type of efficient open domination graph is characterized among Cartesian products $G \Box H$ when $H$ is a 5-cycle or a 4-cycle.
Distance magic labeling and two products of graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2015), Volume 31, Issue 5, 1125-1136 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$. A distance magic labeling of $G$ is a bijection $\ell \colon V\rightarrow {1,...,n}$ for which there exists a positive integer $k$ such that $\sum_{x\in N(v)}\ell (x)=k$ for all $v\in V $, where $N(v)$ is the neighborhood of $v$. We introduce a natural subclass of distance magic graphs. For this class we show that it is closed for the direct product with regular graphs and closed as a second factor for lexicographic product with regular graphs. In addition, we characterize distance magic graphs among direct product of two cycles.
Rainbow domination in the lexicographic product of graphs
Let k be a positive integer and let f be a map from V(G) to the set of all subsets of {1,2,3,...,k}. The function f is called a k-rainbow dominating function of G provided that whenever u is a vertex of G such that f(u) is the empty set, then for each integer r in {1,2,3,...,k} there is a neighbor x of u such that f(x) contains r. The k-rainbow domination number of G is the minimum sum (over all the vertices of G) of the cardinalities of the subsets assigned by a k-rainbow dominating function of G. The k-rainbow domination number of G is the ordinary domination number of the Cartesian product of G and a complete graph of order k. We focus on the 2-rainbow domination number of the lexicographic product of graphs and prove sharp lower and upper bounds for this number. In fact, we prove the exact value of the 2-rainbow domination number of the lexicographic product of G with H in terms of domination invariants of G, except for the case when H has 2-rainbow domination number 3 and there is a minimum 2-rainbow dominating function of H such that some vertex in H is assigned the label {1,2}.
