Caterpillars with $n$ vertices are reconstructible from subgraphs with at most $n/2+1$ vertices
The $\textit{$m$-deck}$ of an $n$-vertex graph is the multiset of unlabeled induced subgraphs with $m$ vertices. Caterpillars are trees in which all nonleaf vertices lie on a single path. We prove for $n\ge48$ that any $n$-vertex caterpillar is reconstructible (up to isomorphism) from its $m$-deck when $m>n/2$. The result is sharp, since for $n\ge6$ there are two $n$-vertex caterpillars having the same $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$-deck. Our result proves the special case for caterpillars of a 1990 conjecture by Nýdl about trees.
Partition of Sparse Multigraphs into a Forest and a Forest with Restrictions
The following measure of sparsity of multigraphs refining the maximum average degree: For $a>0$ and an arbitrary real $b$, a multigraph $H$ is \emph{$(a,b)$-sparse} if it is loopless and for every $A\subseteq V(H)$ with $|A|\geq 2$, the induced subgraph $H[A]$ has at most $a|A|+b$ edges. Forests are exactly $(1,-1)$-sparse multigraphs. It is known that the vertex set of any $(2,-1)$-sparse multigraph can be partitioned into two parts each of which induces a forest.
For a given parameter $D$ we study for which pairs $(a,b)$ every $(a,b)$-sparse multigraph $G$ admits a vertex partition $(V_1, V_2)$ of $V(G)$ such that $G[V_1]$ and $G[V_2]$ are forests, and in addition either (i) $Δ(G[V_1])\leq D$ or (ii) every component of $G[V_1]$ has at most $D$ edges. We find exact bounds on $a$ and $b$ for both types of problems (i) and (ii). We also consider problems of type (i) in the class of simple graphs and find exact bounds for all $D\geq 2$.
Acyclic graphs with at least $2\ell+1$ vertices are $\ell$-recognizable
The $(n-\ell)$-deck of an $n$-vertex graph is the multiset of subgraphs obtained from it by deleting $\ell$ vertices. A family of $n$-vertex graphs is $\ell$-recognizable if every graph having the same $(n-\ell)$-deck as a graph in the family is also in the family. We prove that the family of $n$-vertex graphs with no cycles is $\ell$-recognizable when $n\ge2\ell+1$ (except for $(n,\ell)=(5,2)$). As a consequence, the family of $n$-vertex trees is $\ell$-recognizable when $n\ge2\ell+1$ and $\ell\ne2$. It is known that this fails when $n=2\ell$.
Trees with at least $6\ell+11$ vertices are $\ell$-reconstructible
The $(n-\ell)$-deck of an $n$-vertex graph is the multiset of (unlabeled) subgraphs obtained from it by deleting $\ell$ vertices. An $n$-vertex graph is $\ell$-reconstructible if it is determined by its $(n-\ell)$-deck, meaning that no other graph has the same deck. We prove that every tree with at least $6\ell+11$ vertices is $\ell$-reconstructible.

We study the minimum number of maximum matchings in a bipartite multigraph G with parts $X$ and $Y$ under various conditions, refining the well-known lower bound due to M. Hall. When $|X|=n$, every vertex in $X$ has degree at least $k$, and every vertex in $X$ has at least $r$ distinct neighbors, the minimum is $r!(k-r+1)$ when $n\ge r$ and is $[r+n(k-r)]\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(r-i)$ when $n<r$. When every vertex has at least two neighbors and $|Y|-|X|=t\ge 0$, the minimum is $[(n-1)t+2+b](t+1)$, where $b=|E(G)|-2(n+t)$. We also determine the minimum number of maximum matchings in several other situations. We provide a variety of sharpness constructions.

Let $\{(A_i,B_i)\}_{i=1}^m$ be a set pair system. Füredi, Gyárfás and Király called it {\em $1$-cross intersecting} if $|A_i\cap B_j|$ is $1$ when $i\neq j$ and $0$ if $i=j$. They studied such systems and their generalizations, and in particular considered $m(a,b,1)$ -- the maximum size of a $1$-cross intersecting set pair system in which $|A_i|\leq a$ and $|B_i|\leq b$ for all $i$. Füredi, Gyárfás and Király proved that $m(n,n,1)\geq 5^{(n-1)/2}$ and asked whether there are upper bounds on $m(n,n,1)$ significantly better than the classical bound ${2n\choose n}$ of Bollob\' as for cross intersecting set pair systems.
Answering one of their questions, Holzman recently proved that if $a,b\geq 2$, then $m(a,b,1)\leq \frac{29}{30}\binom{a+b}{a}$. He also conjectured that the factor $\frac{29}{30}$ in his bound can be replaced by $\frac{5}{6}$. The goal of this paper is to prove this bound.

$K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs with small spectral radius
For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $H$ as a subgraph but for any $e \in E(\overline{G})$, $G+e$ contains $H$. In this note, we prove a sharp lower bound for the number of paths and walks on length $2$ in $n$-vertex $K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs. We then use this bound to give a lower bound on the spectral radii of such graphs which is asymptotically tight for each fixed $r$ and $n\to\infty$.

The Reconstruction Conjecture of Ulam asserts that, for $n\geq 3$, every $n$-vertex graph is determined by the multiset of its induced subgraphs with $n-1$ vertices. The conjecture is known to hold for various special classes of graphs but remains wide open. We survey results on the more general conjecture by Kelly from 1957 that for every positive integer $\ell$ there exists $M_\ell$ (with $M_1=3$) such that when $n\geq M_\ell$ every $n$-vertex graph is determined by the multiset of its induced subgraphs with $n-\ell$ vertices.

Generalized DP-Colorings of Graphs

By a graph we mean a finite undirected graph having multiple edges but no loops. Given a graph property $\mathcal{P}$, a $\mathcal{P}$-coloring of a graph $G$ with color set $C$ is a mapping $\f:V(G)\to C$ such that for each color $c\in C$ the subgraph of $G$ induced by the color class $\varphi^{-1}(c)$ belongs to $\mathcal{P}$. The $\mathcal{P}$-chromatic number $χ(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$ is the least number $k$ for which $G$ admits an $\mathcal{P}$-coloring with a set of $k$-colors. This coloring concept dates back to the late 1960s and is commonly known as generalized coloring. In the 1980s the $\mathcal{P}$-choice number $χ_\ell(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$ was introduced and investigated by several authors. In 2018 Ďvorák and Postle introduced the DP-chromatic number as a natural extension of the choice number. They also remarked that this concept applies to any graph property. This motivated us to investigate the $\mathcal{P}$-DP-chromatic number $χ_{\rm DP}(G:\mathcal{P})$ of $G$. We have $χ(G:\mathcal{P})\leq χ_\ell(G:\mathcal{P})\leq χ_{\rm DP}(G:\mathcal{P})$. In this paper we show that various fundamental coloring results, in particular, the theorems of Brooks, of Gallai, and of Erdős, Rubin and Taylor, have counterparts for the $\mathcal{P}$-DP-chromatic number. Furthermore, we provide a generalization of a result from 2000 about partition of graphs into a fixed number of induced subgraphs with bounded variable degeneracy due to Borodin, Kostochka, and Toft.
Degree lists and connectedness are $3$-reconstructible for graphs with at least seven vertices
The $k$-deck of a graph is the multiset of its subgraphs induced by $k$ vertices. A graph or graph property is $l$-reconstructible if it is determined by the deck of subgraphs obtained by deleting $l$ vertices. We show that the degree list of an $n$-vertex graph is $3$-reconstructible when $n\ge7$, and the threshold on $n$ is sharp. Using this result, we show that when $n\ge7$ the $(n-3)$-deck also determines whether an $n$-vertex graph is connected; this is also sharp. These results extend the results of Chernyak and Manvel, respectively, that the degree list and connectedness are $2$-reconstructible when $n\ge6$, which are also sharp.
A sharp Dirac-Erdős type bound for large graphs

Let $k \geq 3$ be an integer, $h_{k}(G)$ be the number of vertices of degree at least $2k$ in a graph $G$, and $\ell_{k}(G)$ be the number of vertices of degree at most $2k-2$ in $G$. Dirac and Erdős proved in 1963 that if $h_{k}(G) - \ell_{k}(G) \geq k^{2} + 2k - 4$, then $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles. For each $k\geq 2$, they also showed an infinite sequence of graphs $G_k(n)$ with $h_{k}(G_k(n)) - \ell_{k}(G_k(n)) = 2k-1$ such that $G_k(n)$ does not have $k$ disjoint cycles. Recently, the authors proved that, for $k \geq 2$, a bound of $3k$ is sufficient to guarantee the existence of $k$ disjoint cycles and presented for every $k$ a graph $G_0(k)$ with $h_{k}(G_0(k)) - \ell_{k}(G_0(k))=3k-1$ and no $k$ disjoint cycles. The goal of this paper is to refine and sharpen this result: We show that the Dirac-Erdős construction is optimal in the sense that for every $k \geq 2$, there are only finitely many graphs $G$ with $h_{k}(G) - \ell_{k}(G) \geq 2k$ but no $k$ disjoint cycles. In particular, every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \geq 19k$ and $h_{k}(G) - \ell_{k}(G) \geq 2k$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles.

A {\em strong $k$-edge-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a mapping from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ such that every two adjacent edges or two edges adjacent to the same edge receive distinct colors. The {\em strong chromatic index} $χ_s'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a strong $k$-edge-coloring. We give bounds on $χ_s'(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ of a graph $G$. when $G$ is sparse, namely, when $G$ is $2$-degenerate or when the maximum average degree ${\rm Mad}(G)$ is small. We prove that the strong chromatic index of each $2$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $5Δ(G) +1$. Furthermore, we show that for a graph $G$, if ${\rm Mad}(G)< 8/3$ and $Δ(G)\geq 9$, then $χ_s'(G)\leq 3Δ(G) -3$ (the bound $3Δ(G) -3$ is sharp) and if ${\rm Mad}(G)<3$ and $Δ(G)\geq 7$, then $χ_s'(G)\leq 3Δ(G)$ (the restriction ${\rm Mad}(G)<3$ is sharp).

Let $k \ge 3$ be an integer, $H_{k}(G)$ be the set of vertices of degree at least $2k$ in a graph $G$, and $L_{k}(G)$ be the set of vertices of degree at most $2k-2$ in $G$. In 1963, Dirac and Erdős proved that $G$ contains $k$ (vertex-)disjoint cycles whenever $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge k^{2} + 2k - 4$. The main result of this paper is that for $k \ge 2$, every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \ge 3k$ containing at most $t$ disjoint triangles and with $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge 2k + t$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles. This yields that if $k \ge 2$ and $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge 3k$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles. This generalizes the Corrádi-Hajnal Theorem, which states that every graph $G$ with $H_{k}(G) = V(G)$ and $|H_{k}(G)| \ge 3k$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles.

By the Grunbaum-Aksenov Theorem (extending Grotzsch's Theorem) every planar graph with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. However, there are infinitely many planar 4-critical graphs with exactly four triangles. We describe all such graphs. This answers a question of Erdos from 1990.

A recent lower bound on the number of edges in a k-critical n-vertex graph by Kostochka and Yancey yields a half-page proof of the celebrated Grötzsch Theorem that every planar triangle-free graph is 3-colorable. In this paper we use the same bound to give short proofs of other known theorems on 3-coloring of planar graphs, among whose is the Grünbaum-Aksenov Theorem that every planar with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. We also prove the new result that every graph obtained from a triangle-free planar graph by adding a vertex of degree at most four is 3-colorable.

We say that a graph G has a perfect H-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of H which cover all the vertices in G. We consider various problems concerning perfect H-packings: Given positive integers n, r, D, we characterise the edge density threshold that ensures a perfect K_r-packing in any graph G on n vertices and with minimum degree at least D. We also give two conjectures concerning degree sequence conditions which force a graph to contain a perfect H-packing. Other related embedding problems are also considered. Indeed, we give a structural result concerning K_r-free graphs that satisfy a certain degree sequence condition.
